  • Land Rover Discovery 1 vs Hummer H1 4x4 challenge.
    The Land Rover Discovery 1 goes up against the mighty Hummer H1 at the rocky Nepean trail at Emu Plains. This was also the first off road run for the newly acquired Hummer.
    It's a rare opportunity to have the iconic Hummer H1 tackle Australian terrain. Be sure to subscribe for more videos featuring the Hummer H1 off road rock crawling in Australia.
    The Land Rover Discovery 1 v8 is twin Arb air locked on 35 inch tyres while the Hummer H1 is on 37 inch tyres with Torque Biasing Differentials front and rear made by Torsen (Tor/Sen, Tordue Sensing Diffs).
    Enjoy and as always feel free to comment, share and subscribe.

    That hummer needn't have suffered so much. Learning how to drive a thorsen/limited slip diff offroad makes it actually far more rewarding, easier, and faster than a locking differential.

    1:20 brilliant demonstration of how to overcome the shortcomings of a Torsen LSD (when one side gets zero traction) - use the brake to give it some resistance to get that torque multiplied to the other side.

      Does the left foot braking and throttle makes all the difference with the torsen diff hummer? Was there a time the humvee felt lacking without a proper locker? Or still a very capable truck? How's it crawling or still need lots of braking?

    • @gc8032
      @gc8032 7 років тому

      Jacqueline Cheong hi by brakeing it places the most torque into the wheels with best footing. This is exactly what is surpose to be applied when you have any wheel slippage. The advantage of doing this manually is once you develop a feel for this it becomes a natural part of your driving. And actually will provide ypu with much better footimg and stability whilst you climb any obstical in the way. I hope this is the answer you were looking for.

      Fumingzeus the hummer H1 is a civilian version of the HUMVEE and was never used by the military

    • @bkeene12
      @bkeene12 6 років тому +1

      No, the H1 was built on the exact same assembly line as the HUMVEE. When it comes time to install the interior, it was pushed to the right of the line, installed and pushed back on to the line to finish up, then it is pushed over to a paint area while the rest of the vehicles go elsewhere. There is no other difference between the two vehicles. I know this because I went to Indiana where the H1 is built to pick mine up.

    • @koitorob
      @koitorob 5 років тому

      Yes, and as such it should have an advantage over the LR as it was built to be driven off road as rarely are wars fought along tarmac roads...

    • @michaelfletcher1224
      @michaelfletcher1224 4 роки тому

      Koito rob it does have an advantage over a stock disco. That disco is very modified. The stock Hummer could do all the carrying 2000 lbs of payload.

    • @bkeene12
      @bkeene12 6 років тому

      Quiet honestly, I'm not so sure he understands how to use it just yet. He might be new to driving that particular vehicle. He makes a lot of semi-rookie mistakes. There is a big learning curve with using the H1 off road- but in the end, the throttle and military grade hardware allows you to make mistakes and keep moving forward.

    Cool disco! Not exactly stock right? The Hummer appears to be stock. Not really apples to apples. A stock Disco wouldn’t be able to keep up with the Hummer. Lift the Hummer a couple of inches and add bigger tires and the disco wouldn’t keep up again. Plus the Hummer can do that and carry a metric ton of payload. Anyway, it’s still a cool Disco.

    • @DRTMaverick
      @DRTMaverick 7 років тому

      Well hummers have more clearance but less wheel travel. Plus they weigh a ton more. Honestly they aren't the most capable off-road vehicle but rather they are designed to carry personnel through wartorn streets where you'll have rubble and other things that might impede your ability to leave.
      Stick them on a slope and even with their diffs locked the 10,000lb+ weight of these things will clearly show how disadvantageous they are to offroading rigs.
      Even my 2nd gen Xterra has more wheel travel. Maybe less clearance because I don't have portals, but still I cycle 8" of wheel travel. The Hummer wasn't built with wheel travel in mind- it was built with keeping the drivetrain tucked up and away in mind, so at the sacrifice of wheel travel, they used portal axles, with the tradeoff of more ground clearance and the ability to skidplate the bottom w/ no drivetrain exposed. Great for military applications, not great for off-roading.
      These things cycle like 4" of wheel travel. It's pathetic.

    • @F6garage
      @F6garage 7 років тому

      I completely agree the hummer is mostly made for carrying people but the disco is more capable in certain circumstances. I do honestly think that the humer is mostly suited to battle field carrying military personnel rather than a steep rocky hill where it is very out of place

    • @DRTMaverick
      @DRTMaverick 7 років тому +1

      Exactly- it wasn't engineered to be a rock crawling rig, at least not as much as the disco was.

    • @F6garage
      @F6garage 7 років тому

      Honestly the disco was originally meant to be a luxury cross utility. But they were easily customisable and easy to fix so that made them very good for lots of different jobs or just to have fun
