    CORRECTION: After talking with a friend confirming this. Fox did not just take the film away from Cameron and butcher it. Cameron agreed to cut down the film to 2hrs & 20mins for a stronger box office run. And the plan was to release the Director's Cut later.

      he did a recent interview where he discussed that they screened both versions and they both tested poorly, so he got cold feet and said let's just go with the shorter version then. they saved a little time and money not finishing the wave sequence. But yes it was his decision to cut the scenes.

      The biggest change in the 4k is the introduction of the aqua colour. Whilst it brings out more colour and contrast, you lose the feeling of depth that the deep blue brings. The aqua color makes it look like the whole movie is 10 metres under water !

    The Abyss has been one of my 10 favorite films ever since I saw it on HBO as a kid, so I have a soft spot for the theatrical cut but I absolutely think the director's cut is the definitive version.
    I saved up my allowance and bought the directors cut Laserdisc in 1993 even though I didn't have a player (I rented one and dubbed it to VHS so I could watch it over and over again.)
    It's absolutely the better version and the reason why my biggest complaint of this release is that it defaults to the theatrical cut, which should be an extra on a seperate disc.

      It has the worst example of current day 4k "Remasters" (more like Disaster), with too much film grain reduced, too much noise reduction in general, oversaturation of colors, colors being changed, stupid filters applied. Hi, thanks for your review.
    Can I ask you a few simple questions:
    I was always told that if you could see bars to the side and the bottom of the image then it WAS originally an Anamorphic print and any such DVD would have "enhanced for widescreen TVs" marked on the packaging like the THX special edition DVD of the Abyss has?
    Were the images you displayed HDR 10 or Dolby Vision?
    - I don't remember seeing the film at the cinema with such muted colours.
    Considering your comparing a 525 resolution to 2160p it doesn't reveal that much more information (or sharper) It does rather beg the question: what print did they master from?
    I look forward to your comments 👍🙂

    • @TwinFlicks
      @TwinFlicks  4 місяці тому +1

      from what Ive been told and reported on they restored it from the original camera negative. Just because you don't remember it being dull, doesn't mean that's not how it looks on DVD and at the time we had nothing else to compare it to. As for anamorphic, unless it says on the DVD packaging 16:9 anamorphic. Then it's not anamorphic. Anamorphic didn't really happen until 2005/2006 circa when 16:9 HD/4K Tv's become available. Before then there was no need to have an anamorphic image because all we had was 4x3 CRT TV's. True Lies & The Abyss DVD's are well known to not have anamorphic widecreen.

    • @IncognitoChild
      @IncognitoChild 4 місяці тому +1

      @@TwinFlicks funny thing is I would say that there is a colour vibrancy to the DVD that is more consistent with what I saw at the cinema.
      You mention The 4K Blu-ray had more of aqua hue to it?
      which is why I was also interested to know which tone maping you were using HDR10 or Dolby Vision.
      I'd like to think that if the film camera negative was used then there would be no need to use such aggressive AI when correcting (restoring) the print for transfer 🤣.
      I'm trying to remember what format was the last official release for the UK: vhs, laserdisc or dvd.
      I have the US special edition DVD because it was the only way to get the theatrical release and the special edition versions.
      If I want the 4K release I'm also going to have to buy it from the US because there is no UK release for this film due to the censorship disagreement. 😭
      I can't recall seeing any discs that said anamorphic since it was a process for projection lenses and not a tv picture process. a progressive scan picture from a component input back in the day is going to look very different to a DVD being played through a HDMI today.

    While I'm not a fan of AI restoring and any "recreation". I definitely trust James Cameron on giving deeply accurate colors on how underwater should look in The Abyss. It's obvious that old DVD definitely lost lot of hidden colors, especially on small items. He went lot of underwater exploring and gained accurate experiences over decades, especially went to titanic underwater in real life many times. I rather go with new 4k recreation for bolder richer colors, instead of the old lesser dvd copy.
    The abyss seem to be his best recreation out of three. Only True Lies is badly affected, while Aliens survived decently on 4k somehow. Aliens is mostly blu-ray upscale unfortunately, but I do keep both old blu-ray and 4k. Especially James Cameron's 4k recreations is better choice for modern viewers who are not into old films much.

    Had to import this one as it's been blocked in the UK by the BBFC (because of the rat scene in its uncut form). Can't wait to get my hands on it! I've been making do with the SE DVD for the last decade or however long it's been. It's the one film where I have had to knock my projector/TV out of 16:9 mode and use one of the zoom modes to fill the screen properly. Given the run time of the movie, it's one on those films that I wish had spanned two DVD's back in the day; with all the animated menus on top the film was always very compressed to fit on a single DVD.

      Because 1. Its the Director's orgrinal color deisgn that fit the visual language and tone of the movie. That he approved and supervised to make sure its accurate 2. When comparing the 2 formats side by side the 4K color garding sometimes does look more appropriate or accurate for the scene/s

Did you inspect the audio system from 1989 too? You remember all of that? The reason we know that these 4K releases are color correct is because we know what certain objects look like in real life with real eye balls. So when you see a caucasian skin tone that looks like Caucasian skin, and not say, blue, then we know its correct.

    You said that Fox took the movie from him and cut 30 minutes out. That's not entirely accurate. Cameron did the cuts himself. Part of the reason why he did it was because they couldn't render the wave properly in CG at the time, and so they had to cut that sequence and the other sideplots that were connected to it. Everything else made it into the film. I agree with you that the special edition is the definitive edition, and the one that is worth watching, but you can still get all the core action scenes and an understanding of what the creatures do in the theatrical cut.

    To be clear, as a new envisioning of The Abyss the 4K disc is a stunner. Cameron obviously prefers a clean digital look with eye-popping colors and extremely sharp contrasts. And this is it without a doubt: the new version of his film, the way he wants is to be today. One thing it definitely isn’t: a technical restoration that brings the movie we know to the new home video format while keeping it true to the original. And that should be mentioned on the cover: “Cameron’s new visual interpretation of his old film.” And I would be OK with that, because it would be honest. The way they are marketing this product ain’t. And since there’s no other version to choose from it is, in all actuality, cinematic revisionism and the opposite of film preservation. But I’m not really surprised. Cameron has shown time and again that he has no real integrity towards his own oeuvre. BTW: I would rate this in two ways: As a new movie I would give it a 4/5 (or 4.5/5 if you will) picture-wise. As a 4K of an old movie I’d rate it a 2/5.

    Though this one is great, not all Director's Cuts are created equally.....And, aside from being non-anamorphic, I'm realizing the DVD really doesn't suck. The color timing is strictly a matter of preference.

      @@TwinFlicks Wrong according to whom? James Cameron? Directors and cinematographers change how they want their movies to look - all the time. John Carpenter is notorious for it. He and Dean Cundey have approved like four or five different versions of "Halloween," each with a different color timing. The Thing is another one where they have approved a couple and all of them look different. George Lucas is another one who changes stuff all the time... Pick the one you think looks the best and quit trying to tell everybody that x version is wrong. Even different filmprints can alter the way the colors come through.

      A color grade that isn't accurate to the original theatrical color grade is revisionism. Not restoration.
      And that's what is never clear to me in these videos. How do we know whether this current version is "more appropriate" or accurate? Was there a comparison between this and a 35mm print? Or are we just relying on what the studio, Cameron or any director says is their current preference?
      Fans have every right to be mad when a director decides to dramatically alter a movie's look, sound, etc. It's fine if they do that, label it as such and have it available as an option. But they need to be upfront about that and preferably offer the original version as an option.
