I remember settling in to watch the nearly 4-hour director’s cut of this film, and being totally immersed in it. No joke intended. Just don’t know a better word for how riveting it was.

@@hvitekristesdod Oh I'm just pointing out how amazing the competition was that year. Just look at the best actress nominees for example. Those are some of the best actresses of all time ALL NOMINATED IN THE SAME YEAR!!! 1989 was a tough year Jodie foster has multiple Oscar's. Meryl Streep too. Glenn close has like 9 nominations. It would be like being up against Deniro Pacino Daniel day Lewis all in the same year. Watch Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction (1987) to see another phenomenal performance. As a crazy ex gf
Remember the old Comcast with the blue icons? I remember seeing this extended version on that cable box awhile ago, and never saw it again. Same with the sentry guns in Aliens
Everything was on a longer time frame instead of the profit freight train we're on now that just wants to pump out products as fast as possible with little regard for quality.
Try to imagine just how hostile the environment is that Bud is falling down into, with nothing more than a fluid jacket, a reinforced diving suit, and his own guts. The pressure down there rapidly exceeds 1000 atmospheres - that's 15,000 pounds, *2 tons greater than the weight of a full grown bull orca,* pressing in on *every square inch* of his body. The temperature is 34 to 39 °F and the water, unlike air, will suck the heat immediately out of your body - water is much more efficient than air at transferring heat. He's disoriented in the dark, his nav guide has been crushed to a ball of junk, and the pressure just keeps climbing, to the point his nerve function starts to be impaired. You can see him start to convulse from his neurons getting crushed together, shorting them out... And then the miracle occurs. The Builders of Memory, the aliens, find him. They can directly push molecule-sized probes into his brain and body, to correct the effects of the pressure and stop the seizing. About 5:30, their treatment starts taking hold, and he can talk coherently again. They show him which wire to cut - the nuke was never *actually* a threat, they identified and analyzed it immediately, but they let Bud be their hands and arms. They very badly wanted to meet a human face to face. We the audience know where that light was coming from... ( The extra backstory is from the Orson Scott Card novelization, author of the Ender's Game series. He was quite good at writing truly alien aliens, and made the Builders of Memory their own characters ).

It is a crime that they didn’t include this scene.
