My favorite of the Smith & Wesson wheel guns Are as follows. Model model 66 357 Magnum. Smith & Wesson model 29 44. Smith & Wesson 41 magnum. And Smith & Wesson model 36 38 Special.
Very cool! My first revolver was a S&W 19-4, 6inch bought in 1982. Still have it along with its box too. Out of all my S&W revolvers it’s still my favorite.
I have a Gen 1 bought from my LEO parent while working the front desk. person came in with it to have it destroyed. Bought it from him for $25 in 1974.
Question: You said you checked the serial number, and you believe it was made in 1974. Then you said they began in 1970, and for only the first year and a half, they used the "all stainless sights." So in theory shouldn't your gun date no later than 1972? (If they started in 70 and only made the all stainless for 1 1/2 years then 74 would be 3.5 to 4 years later. I only ask bc im about to pick one up, stainless sights, and am curios as to the year.) Beautiful firearm you have none the less
Beautiful ! That’s what what went through law enforcement training with 66-2 and I still have it ! BTW this was in 1992. Need to get mine back out and put a few down range ! Tip: Always try to use 158 grain in the 357 magnum but mainly shoot 38 Special according to manufacturer specifications as to no crack the forcing cone ! Have a Blessed Day
You had to go with very high pressure hand loads to bust that forcing cone. The 66 will take standard pressure high quality 357 loads all day with no problems. I have shot some hot Corbon loads through mine and they are a bit too much for everyday shooting.I had second thoughts about high pressure loads in the k frame after that.
I wish I had a room just for firearms maintenance. I have get all the stuff out and put it back up

Back when S&W made real revolvers! Beatiful
That's a great looking wheel-gun. So much nicer looking than the plethora of black plastic guns for sale these days.
Thank you

Where did you get this treasure? Beautiful piece of craftsmanship!
I've got one of those it was my dad's duty weapon for the longest time I can remember and I'm 51 years old.

That is awesome! What a save
Watch the forcing cone on that beauty. Have seen a wood barrel full of those K Frames after steady use of Magnum rounds.
Which loads were being used?
4" Barrel?
👍👌🐇

Beautiful 66! I have two, both dash ones. A 6" and 2 1/2" snubby. Thanks for sharing this one.
Nice firearm! I own the 16-3 I believe. Made in 1964 which is 20 years older than me. Handed from my dad.
Had one just like it, even had the original reciept. Forced to sell it to make the bills. Have really missed it since.

Nice
That's a nice gun I just picked up a model 10 nickel plated
