- A viewer asked if I could do a video on the software/plug ins that I use.
So, in this video I show my little recording/practice setup and show how it all works.
Thanks to "killroy123" for the question!
Nice mousepad dude
A booby mouse pad, HAHAHAHA 😂
Thank you Christopher.
yeeesss reminds me of Prison school lmao
Appreciate the video man. I'm not sure why people can't give a straightforward explanation but you did a superb job.
Fantastic tutorial! I've been scouring UA-cam and forums trying to get the simplest explanation of: How to play amp sims through the computer. You answered that extremely well. Thank you!
Thanks for the video. Didn't realize how easy it is to be recording in my guitar cave. The boobie mouse pad is a nice touch.
Honestly it made me go off track and went looking on Amazon😂
@@CosmicHarmony58 booby mouse pad is essential for amplification. Keep up the search king 😤
(For no particular reason, have u found it yet?)
thank you for sharing you no idea how many videos I went through trying to figure out why I had a clipping sound. thank you.
Thanks for this. I've been thinking of doing something similar. Audio interface into a gaming laptop which is the hub of my living room entertainment system. The main difference is instead of monitors it'll be going thru a vintage audio system with 5 channel stereo connected to my laptop. I don't record anything yet, I just wanted to try it as an experiment and alternative to my tube amp and pedals. Very helpful :)
You are the only person I can find who plays thorugh multimedia speakers....wish you could show how to hook it up.
appreciate this !! made it seem so simple especially since i’m using the same software :D what luck , thanks again!
Thanks Chris! Very helpful.
Thanks for asking for the rest of us :)
Right on man! Do you know if it’s possible to record into the computer or would that be something completely different
Totally!! With this type of setup, all that is left is a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) software of your choice. I use Reaper. Recording is so easy nowadays.
Good stuff.
I have that same MIDI controller
Thanks!
I love the mousepad lol
There are audio interfaces with an "amp out". Do you think I could use that to connect it to my amp, just to have fun using plugins, instead of buying studio monitors? I'm not interested in recording.
Maybe? I've no experience with doing it though...
Hi! If I plug headphones into the inerface, will I be able to hear my guitar with all effects and stuff while I play? Sorry for the silly question!
yes.
I'm not that into music industry but I like this video, nice explanation mate
Thank you for the content ♥️
Christopher, what's going on with that mouse pad...
Can I listen to songs from files and play with them and have the sound of my guitar coming through?
Thanks for the video.
Can I use any type of speaker or does it not need a special speaker?
nice mousepad i see you one of us too
You have the exact same monitor as I have!
Any reason I’m having a static sound? It’s even when nothing is plugged in and it’s set to the 3.5m jack.
Maybe an electrical field interference? Some light fixtures can interfere. Also try not to run any cables too near to electrical cables or outlets. Power in general, can be "dirty". Using a power conditioner can help too.
so, let's say you wanted to buy a single pair of monitors for both computer and playing "live" in your home office. Some basic tips/brands? Any advice/info would be much appreciated. thanks for the video!
I've asked some people in my area and i never seem to get a straight answer.. Can you just load up your archetype, amplitube, or whatever amp sim you have and start playing/practicing? Would you even need a DAW if you dont plan on doing any recording? Lastly, can you do all that, as stated before, put on your music streaming service and play along with songs all through your speakers or headphones? Thanks, very informative video!
Yes. Most modern plugins come with a stand-alone version that you can play through, without needing a DAW. You'll still need an "audio interface" to connect to your computer.
I use the standalone for practice all the time. I go on youtube and jam along with backing tracks. Good times!!
Potentially it is a silly question: while you are using Reaper with your favourite guitar plugins can you directily hear the resulting sound? Or do you need to record it first, because all you can hear while playing is the unprocessed input sound?
I can directly hear the resulting sound.
can i set it up for blueotooth a headphones?
cool mousepad yo
can you use regular speaker and just start playing/practicing your favorite guitar?, like you dont need to buy "real amplifier" right since youre using "digital amplifier"?. also by any means "regular speaker" i mean the speaker does not have to be an advanced speaker?
Basic "computer as a practice amp" setup is:
Computer, audio interface, amp software, headphones/speakers.
Any speakers that can be hooked up to the Audio interface will work. They don't have to be expensive Studio monitors.
@@ChrisTompkins-Music-And-Gear ah thank you! im getting a guitar tomorrow and this vids really helped me out and clears my confusion :) thanks alot
ok hold up, before i watch this beneficial youtube video,
please explain:
the mousepad.
Hey where is the small MIDI controller from?
It's an Alesis product. I got mine from Sweetwater.
I know this was 3 years ago, but can you answer the question, How to turn a mini pc into an effects pedal.
I really cannot answer that... Sorry. No clue.
Would you still need noise gates or anything like that to get a clean signal?
can I use a sound card instead of a user interface?
Yes. As long as it has the inputs and outputs that you need for instruments and speakers.
If I have my headphones plugged into the interface, do they still work as normal headphones? For listening to music for example
indeed.
okay but if the software is reacting to your guitar couldnt you just hookup your speakers to your pc then listen through the software itself
Hey brother nice video!
With this setup, could you make your electric guitar just like acoustic?
Possibly, with the right amp sim software.
How much better are the studio monitor for guitar than regular speaker
Most commercial grade speakers are using speakers that are "tuned" to specific EQ's. Studio monitors are typically neutral in their EQ which allows the listener to correctly set the signal going to the speakers properly. "Cleaner" audio.
Im sitting here all morning not getting my software to work. I just got my scarlett focusrite solo 3rd gen. On direct monitor I can hear my guitar just fine through my monitors. But my Amp sims just dont work, no matter what settings i choose. I made sure i have input and output on Asio scarlett. Im using the amped roots ampsim. No sound what so ever. Direct sound, clean and nice, but no sound from the sim to my headphones. Anyone got any suggestions?
Are you using the "stand alone" roots? Or are you running it on a track in a DAW?
In the settings of the roots, make sure "mute output audio" is not checked.
Secondly, toggle the "L/R" switch on the main window of the software.
That mouse pad 😭😭😭😭😭😭
Might be a dumb question but if I’ve connected studio monitors to an interface and connected that to a computer, do the separate PC speakers work at the same time as the monitors? For instance if I wanted to play music through the speakers but play along on guitar through studio monitors via the interface?
The audio interface acts as a sound card in your computer. So, if its plugged in you have to enable the interface as your pc's audio output. Therefore, if you computer speakers are plugged into the pc, they will no longer work. You'd have to hook the up to the interface. I don't know if you can separate the guitar to only one set of speakers though...
Instead of using speakers do u recommend sending that signal and use my amp as the speaker?
Is there any way of doing this without at audio interface?
Does it simulate pickups to or just the amp? You will hear a differens between 2 pickups?
Thank You!
Chris, Nice rig. I have a focusrite 212, a right /left speaker out in the back...how the heck did you get 4 speakers out + a sub? Did you splice the wires or...?
My JBL's come out of 1&2, The Klipsch speakers are a 2.1 computer speaker set. (left, right & Sub) So, they have a 1/8th inch jack, which I run into a stereo splitter.(1/8th" female to split 1/4"male) That gets plugged into output 3&4.
:)
Use a HEPA filter in that room. It’ll eat up that dust
Hey Chris, thanks for the video. Was there a specific reason for the separate speaker systems? If you mentioned it i totally missed it. :P
Originally, my Idea was to be able to have 2 different types of reference speakers, for mixing. But it turned out that I really love the sound of the 2 sets blended together. They get a much fuller range.
thx man
Bruhhhh the mouse pad hahahahaa
How much does a setup like that cost? How much are the interface and the plugins? Would you ever use this setup instead of buying an amp if you’re on a budget? Thank you for the video!
This setup is cheap in terms of decent quality digital setups, but it's by no means the best low budget option.
My interface is $299 and the "Plini" plugin (my favorite) is about $140. But, you could buy a Behringer "euphoria" single input interface, for less than $50 and there are some SICK plugins out there, for free or close to it. So, if you already have a working PC, you could realistically get a similar setup for under $75. (not including the PC or studio monitors)
BOOBIE MOUSEPAD
Hi
Hello!
You think with all your technical expertise that you would be able to make a video that is loud enough to be Audible
Your computer can not be an amp. Period. You will have to add an actual amplifier. The sound card in your computer can process the sound.your " interface " is the amp. Not the computer. You are call it all wrong. Reaper is a program, not an amplifier. Your computer sends the signal to your amplifier, the red box that your guitar is plugged into. Very big difference with what you are trying to show people. Your computer is not an amplifier. It will only output line level signal to the amplifier. You should re-learn the correct terminology.
can this be done without an audio interface but with a regular 6.35-3.5 adapter cuz my stuff is broken atm
