This digital path can be a little overwhelming for beginners or even an old school metalhead like myself. You break things down step by step so there's no guess work. You're absolutely the best at teaching and sharing your knowledge with others. So inspiring. Thanks Rob for being a working man's go to for tips on how to improve our playing and our overall love of heavy guitars!! Always excited when I get notified that you've released a new video. Once again Professor Arnold... Heavy Metal Over Everything!!!
Dude I just came back to guitar after a 15 year "hiatus". Crazy where things have gotten. Fallen back in love and playing guitar again thanks to these sims
This is exactly the video I needed 6 months ago. I spent days researching and learning about interfaces and how it all worked before I pulled the trigger! This is the perfect guide, top shelf as always.
The nice thing about Rob is he has that steady and downto earth tempo and mellow about things. Most guys just be loud and obnoxious in tutorials, Rob's a gem🤘
Mate this literally couldn't have come at a better time. I'm about to move house and was seriously considering changing to an all computer setup (to save space) and leaving my amps at my friends place (where we jam) so having a guide like this is incredibly useful, thank you!
I run the Apollo Twin X Interface. Honestly the hardest thing was finding a motherboard that supported Thunder Bolt 3, otherwise everything was straight forward. It’s been a life saver since I live with 3 other roommates and can’t blast my guitar like I would at home. Pop in some headphones, get Apple Music running and boom, I can play with the songs and it sounds great. Total advocate for getting your guitar into a computer.
Thank you Rob! I'm computer illiterate and been overwhelmed with this stuff but been wanting to get a set up like this for awhile after seeing soooo many plug in reviews but been scared to ask about this step lol
i really enjoyed the first 9 minutes. Then, you quickly connect to your monitors, implying is it not possible to play through computer speakers...this makes it appear I need to trash my Creative computer speakers and purchase some "monitors." You have no idea how thrilled I am :)
Thank you Rob for these tutorials! When I was a teenager, you became a source of inspiration for the guitar in general and metal riffing! I am so glad that you are so active on UA-cam! It's like if a dream came true! Stay metal! \m/ 🙂
Clear and descriptive video, liked and subbed. Also, you’ve just got a chill vibe helps with delivering all the info and keeping the listener interested.
I've been doing this for many years but I always still watch videos to see different possible ways of doing things. I've been stuck in alot of bored ruts over time, with repeating my own processes.
I use a focusrite and guitar rig 6. I live in an apartment. An upstairs apartment at that. I’m overly concerned about annoying my neighbors so I play a LOT on my computer now. Took me a ton of time and research to figure it out but now I almost prefer to play on the computer with my headphones vs my amp. One note I’d say is make sure you know your speaker or headphone specs. If you’re playing with your audio at low quality frequencies it’s going to sound bad. If you have studio quality headphones/monitors aim for 48,000
Really awesome, I might have to check out the Bogren stuff, that Trivium bundle is mighty tempting as they're one of my fav bands. You know what I would like to see (if possible)? Is it possible to perform live with these? Like, a small solo act or guy in a local band who doesn't have a better option for their tones, how would one go about setting up for a live show?
For sure! You could just run a line out from your computer or your interface! Instead of outputting to speakers like you'd do at home, you'd output to the venue's PA system.
Thank you so much for making this video Rob. Been wanting to get into amp plugins. And you took away all my concerns and intimidation. Can't wait to get started🙂
Thanks for the video. Complete newb to this stuff......what would most people do to connect their speakers? It looks like you plugged something through your sound board?
Gotta love how easily accessible home studios are now. The tech just gets cooler by the month. I remember when i first bought Pro Tools a long while back. Was such a cool and frustrating experience, but if ya focus and have the passion. You can figure anything out! Nother shredder of a vid brother Rob. God bless homie. 😉
I have basically given up guitar because I have severe hearing damage. My ears ring constantly but they ring at in intensity that I can tolerate. If I play electric guitar through an amp it makes the ringing worse even if it's very low level, like 70dB. I've wondered if my ears would tolerate playing through the computer. Might be worth a try. Thanks for the informative video!
Hey Rob, I play bass and I want to start playing through my computer and also play along with some music from my favorite bands thru Spotify. I'm going to buy some studio monitors and a interface. I guess it's the same process you just showed?
im a new sub because ur the 1st one from my long quest to learn this stuff you my guy explain step by step very understandable i dont have to guess what u did there. so informative like and subs thank u Rob!
@@RobArnoldWorld yes, do u have a part 2 for this? like adding the plug ins or drums. its kinda complicated for me im sure alot also would love to watch that in the future. but this video is already helped me understand cheers tnx

@@RobArnoldWorld Ok I now got myself a audio interface and downloaded the Bogen amps but I don't get the click track when I record. How do I enable that?
@@crimsonfiredotnet Oh, I misunderstood your question then. I was going to share another bogren video I have demonstrating how to use the click track, which you can certainly then record. But I didn't realize you meant "can the bogren recorder itself", record the click track. And I guess now you've found the answer. But I thought you were asking if the click track could be recorded, assuming you meant within your DAW or something, which is why I replied, absolutely.
I used to have a irig2 for connecting mac and guitar but that was very hard to use, you have to do literally every settings in garageband or amplitube. This Volt 2 is looking very straighforward and easy to use, it is good you can adjust on a reallife interface
If you're on a budget you can just grab the 30 dollar beringer simple input output, and get a 1/4 inch to rca adapter or two. And get a cheap thrift store guitar amp or whatever else your favorite speaker or amp setup is, and if you find some free software for effects you can get it done for like 40 bucks or less. But these look like quality options here, just I'm going budget so I'm searching for some freeware or cheapware. Also IR files are amazing. You can make your guitar sound just like your favorite guitarists, with very little setup.
Man what a great video , I play at home have a basic set up , but you still helped me so much with a very simple educational video and easy to follow. Great video 👍👍🤙🤙
This is such a helpful video I’m brand new switching over to digital playing I’m just curious will any set of studio monitors work? I’m curious on what kind of monitors you’re running because the sound was very nice coming out of them again thank you again for this awesome video helped so much! 🤘🏼
Hey happy to hear that man!🤘 Yes, any studio monitors will work, but here's what I use... I'm not sure what your budget is, but these are the monitors I've use and have loved for over a decade! imp.i114863.net/DynaudioBM5mkIII But if that's more than you're looking to spend, here's a setup I used all throughout covid when I was forced to shut down my main studio: amzn.to/3weITn5 Only a little over a hundred bucks for the whole setup, and it rocks!
@@RobArnoldWorld you’re so awesome man thank you for the quick reply! If I can get a good little studio setup going without breaking the bank too much I’ll be happy so I will take your words and advice on these thank you very much 🤘🏼
I have just got into the this , after a lot of years because im rubbish with pcs n laptops and it scared me lol so I got the positive grid riff and I love it but will move on to the most advanced stuff when I get more more into it lol
Bro thanks so much for posting this! Really helpful. Question: can you plug studio monitors directly into your PC? Or do you need a special interface for those too? Also, if you're ever so inclined, could you post a step-by-step vid tutorial on how to post a guitar rock/metal cover song to youtube maybe even with drum track too? I've always wondered how people post metal/rock/classic rock cover songs on YT and it sounds so high quality with excellent guitar tones, etc. I realize this potentially would be a long video, so no worries if you don't feel like doing that LOL I totally get it. But thank you for posting this vid again. This is a great starting place for me!
Right on man! Pretty much every interface has outputs that allow you to connect studio monitors. But if you want to connect them directly to your PC (or Mac), you'd simply use the computer headphones output, and you'd need some sort of adaptor or cable, that splits the 1/8" output on your computer, to two 1/4" outputs for your monitors. But there are even easier solutions... For years, before I moved my whole studio operation to my home, I simply used this basic computer monitor setup I got from Costco, and it was great! It sounds fantastic, and served me well for years! Here it is on Amazon... check it out! amzn.to/3Qj29Y8 (no adapters or anything needed. It all plugs into your computers headphones output)
@@RobArnoldWorld Currently i have these speakers connected to my PC's headphones output... but i'm not getting any sound when i'm plugged into the Volt?
I'm guessing you somehow need to tell your computer to output sound coming from the Volt. Without messing around with your system myself, I unfortunately can't advise you on how to proceed with that. @@nc1969
@@RobArnoldWorld i really appreciate it Rob.. thx again for reaching out... i did get that set to work coming from the headphones out... but i just picked up a set of JBL Professional 305P MkII Next-Generation 5-Inch 2-Way Powered Studio Monitors ... i just wanted a more robust setup... i'll keep you posted.
Rob, gotta get a video of you checking out Archetype Gojira plug in by Neural DSP! I’d think you’d love it because the 3rd amp is based on a EVH 5150. Brutal tones!
As a matter of fact I've been working with the Neural Gojira lately on another project over at Spider Studio here in Cleveland, and yes, it IS killer! I've gotta get it!
Hey Rob, really appreciate you putting this info together. would consider doing a part 2 addressing output options? speakers, monitors, etc.? You getting a great tone in video, but how exactly are exactly are you achieving this? How much of this is contingent on $$$ speakers and mixing equipment? Also, what DAW are you using/recommend? I have Reaper. Thanks Rob!!
I'll consider a part two! I use a UA Apollo Quad with protools, and yes I have nice studio monitors and all that, but you can still achieve great tones just with an interface and headphones. Or even computer monitors. I used this exact setup amzn.to/3VIP2T1 during covid while I was relocating my studio, and I got by just fine. In fact, I'd 100% recommend you go ahead and start with the Klipsch package I linked you to. Can't go wrong for that price, and everything you pump through it will sound great. Or maybe you even already have a similar setup. Point being, great guitar tone comes first from the playing, then the amp. So you saw the amp I was using in this vid, the Bogren Ampknob stuff, and I recommend giving it a try! Free 14 day trials, so there's nothing to lose! I hope I answered your question. But if not, feel free to continue the conversation!🎸
@@RobArnoldWorld thx Rob, i appreciate the reply. Currently I have a L6 CATALYST 200. This amp can also be used as an interface, which i have yet to do. Just prior i had the Helix LT with a L6 Powercab plus, and i was so dissapointed in the the sound of that cabinet. I thought about getting a good set of studio monitors, but just decided to go with the CATALYST for a more "ease of use" solution.
Unfortunately I'm unfamiliar with the line 6 stuff, so I can't really offer any suggestions on where to go with your setup from here. Plus without hearing it for myself, I really don't know what we're dealing with. Sorry bro!@@nc1969
@@RobArnoldWorld hey rob im strongly considering getting the interface you mentioned, along with the speaker set linked above... what are some next tier speaker set you would recommend for better sound quality than the Klipsch linked above? best. Nick
Hmm, well I guess it depends on what your budget is like. Here's the set I've used and loved for the past 13 years! imp.i114863.net/DynaudioBM5mkIII And I just looked, and it appears they have some demo models available for only $350 each! @@nc1969
I was hesitant at first to go down this path. It makes it so much easier to lay down ideas. It's the Archetype Gojira suite that had me go down that path. Now I use neural Amp modeller, which is free and the community made captures are fantastic. I just need an ir for my real speakers which are a very niche set-up.😂 Dude, the grown hair again is looking sick!. How long has it been, Impossibility Of Reason?
Haha yeah man! I last cut it off in 2004 I think it was, and had been rocking the short hair look until about 2.5 years ago when I decided to grow it out again. I think I've still got another 2 full years before it's where I want it to be. The older I get, the slower it grows!
@RobArnoldWorld duuude, that's ages!. What you influenced you to grow it back?. It's looking awesome too!. You probably already know, but a trime every quarter really does help with the growth. My hairs half way down my back and the only way I'm cutting is if it recedes or a skullet forms (Devin Townsend earned that crown) I wouldn't be able to rock that like he did. Haha.
Haha I unfortunately do have quite a skullet! It sucks! But I figure, fuck it. I'm going through with it anyway! I will take your advice, and have LaMarca trim a bit off the next time I see him! And the reason I've decided to grow it back out, is that I've been wanting to look the part a little more again. Simple as that!🤘@@felinekaiju4517
Great vid rob, Amazing how quick someone can get up and running these days! P.s I hear Kirk Hammett has a Rob Arnold poster up in his bedroom 😅 Some tasty licks!
Thanks dude! Having a mixer just gives me more routing and connection options, but it's not totally necessary. But yes, I just plugged my Volt into an open channel on my mixer. If I didn't have the mixer, I'd simply plug my monitors straight into the Volt. But let's say I wanted to watch a UA-cam video... the sound from that video would no longer come out of my monitors. It would just come out of my computer. So having the mixer, allows me to plug in a variety of things simultaneously, with individual level controls for each.👌 Hope that helps!
@@RobArnoldWorld Thank you, that makes sense…a mixer would definitely come in handy!I am tackling the amp sim thing today..this answered alot of my questions..I have been playing since the 80’s,but the computer thing is totally new to me..

Sounds awesome. I purchased an m1 MacBook Pro last year but I’ve been experiencing popping and cracking issues whilst using the neural plugins. It’s frustrating as I didn’t have these issues on my old intel iMac. I am using an old focusrite scarlet audio interface though. Not sure if that could be the problem?
In my opinion, the main cause for popping and crackling is signal overload, somewhere along your gain staging path. Whether it's on the input side, or an insert clipping, or your master bus, try not to allow ANYTHING to clip (overload), and I bet that will fix your problem. Another cause for issues you're experiencing might be if you were using a trial version of a plugin, that has now expired. I remember back in the day, all the IK Multimedia guitar stuff acted that way after the trial period was up. You could still use the plugin, but it would randomly pop and crackle, forcing you to purchase out of frustration!
@@RobArnoldWorld thanks so much for replying. I’ll have to have another proper look again. Out of interest have you tried many of the neural plugins? If so how do you find they compare to what you are using? The plugin you used in this vid sounded awesome!
I personally don't have much experience with the Neural stuff, but from the few times I've heard their stuff in mixes, it's always been incredible! The Dark Glass one for bass comes to mind!@@outatime862
Killer video Rob. What I'd like to see is how you ACTUALLY DO these videos. How the camera, audio AND what you are recording is done. How the video recording works while hearing what you are playing ect. I don't think the camera mic is recording the guitar. Do you record the video and audio from the camera in one program and then record the guitar in another program and then add it in, in editing things like that. Thanks if you consider this. 🤘
Hey thanks bro! So for this particular video I've got: -an overhead camera filming what I'm doing on my desk. -another camera filming me, which is the one I look at when I'm talking. -a microphone attached to my shirt, that's recording my voice, and all audio in the room. This is captured via Pro Tools on my iMac. -a screen recording on my MacBook, that captures everything I'm doing on it, plus the audio that it hears coming from the Volt/amp sim. Then I bring all of those assets into Final Cut Pro, and I create a multi cam edit, and I mix and design everything together in a way I'd like for it to be presented. There's a lot of audio automation involved, because when I'm playing guitar for instance, and I want you guys to hear the amp sim, then I need to duck (or lower) the volume of my speaking mic. Otherwise, you'd be hearing both signals. And sometimes you will hear both signals, depending on the scenario. But the main thing is to capture all of those sources, both audio and video, and then learn how to combine them in post. Hope that helps! It took me a long time to wrap my head around creating and presenting content like this, and I'm still learning every day!
@@RobArnoldWorld Bro thank you for this. I'm thinking about doing a channel this winter when I'm home from work for 3 months. I just bought a Sony ZV-E1, couple of lens. My rig though is windows. I built a ridiculously powerful "gaming" computer, with thunderbolt connectivity, specifically for my studio. Right now I'm running an Antelope Audio Zen Go as my interface, Sonar for my DAW, and have been using the OTTO AUDIO 11 11 11 11 and the Neural DSP Gojira plug ins pretty much exclusively on my next album. The OTTO is BADASS. I have a pretty geared up studio for being a novice/not full time producer/engineer so I feel I have the core of what I need. This extra bit if info really helped. So next on my list, wireless lavalier mic, pro lighting, good video editing software and learning how to edit it all together. I don't want to do a channel that is cell phone garbage. I want to bring a level of professionalism right out of the gate and improve from there. You, Glenn and Ola have been hugely influential on getting me back into playing and recording. I went on a long hiatus, with all of my amps and guitars packed away for a decade. My band has been around since 95...then in 09 life happened and I had to concentrate on work. (Getting old sucks) but now I'm back in the ring with a fire and passion that I haven't had in many moons. So thank you. BTW...this isn't brown nosing, sucking up or anything like that but I gotta tell ya. Impossibility of Reason is in my top 10 favorite albums of all time. Not even joking. That's one of the shows I want to do when I get this up and running. Go through, review and get out to people my favorite albums of all time and highlight my favorite riffs of all time, Cleansation and Power Trip have some of my favorite riffs of all time and Down Again really got me through some rough times. Thanks again and hope to shoot the shit with you more. Horns Up 🤘
That's killer man! I'm honored, and will look forward to TIOR content when it drops!🤘 I'm also honored to be mentioned alongside Glen and Ola, when it comes to the UA-cam game. 👊 I think you have the right mindset, and from the sound of it, you'll be producing great content right off the bat. Quick tip:With the lavalier mic, I started out with that route, and tried 2-3 different ones, and I didn't like the results. (probably because I was buying inexpensive ones). So right before I was going to go all out on a nice $200-300 lab mic, I discovered the Rode-Go mics. That's the thing I had attached to my shirt, and I'm sure you seen lots of other people using them too. They're extremely versatile and sound great, and I totally recommend going this route! Check em' out if you're interested! imp.i114863.net/RodeGo @descent1331
@@RobArnoldWorldawesome bro I will check them out. I'm a gear whore so you are speaking my language. I don't usually buy cheap gear but every once in a while I'm surprised at what a inexpensive piece of gear does. Thanks again for all the info and help. 🤘
Hmm... I'm not sure that's what you'd want to do, but rather, the opposite! You can certainly try whatever you like, but for me, I'd want to run my live amp into an interface so that I could record it. Or put a mic in front of my amp, and run the mic into the interface. Apologies though if I've misunderstood your question.
Hi all, Need some help guys to diagnose this excessive random noise coming out from my Yamaha hs8 speaker ( so loud) that I'm scared to use this setup again- I'm using Guitar- to Hotone ampero stage 2 - going out to HS8 speakers using XLR cable. @RobArnoldWorld- I you see this im haoping you can answer a question in the video you plugged a guitar cable from the volt to over but the screen or something im wondering what you did. Also, are a really good set of monitor speakers. Do the monitors sound good for thise heavy riffs. And loud enough i want to be able to play loud and get a beefy room sound, but also play low volumes. Can you connect it to a real cab with a power supply or just use an frfr. Sorry asking alot any one that has input please reach out. I really want to learn.
Hey dude- I plugged that cable from the Volt into my mixing board, which feeds my monitors. The same thing could have been achieved by plugging the monitors directly into the Volt (bypassing a mixer).

But now that I understand how straight forward it is to get there and have a decent bedroom sound/recording if I want. I thought you needed irs and all this other jazz but I guess a little further down the rabbit hole
I recommend trying out a MacBook, which comes with the free DAW, GarageBand. It has everything you need to create anything you can conjure up! @@InfamouslyCantankerous
Hey Rob, quick question... so i have the volt connected to the PC... my Speaker system is plugged into the PC 3.5 connection... but i'm not getting any sound from the Volt through speakers? How did you use your Volt with the Klipsh speakers you recommended?
I only know the Mac platform well, but I'd say your issue most likely has something to do with your system sound settings. On Mac, I need to go to system preferences, then sound, then I need to tell my Mac to output sound through whatever input I have my speakers connected to. You could also connect your speakers directly to the Volt, and that may help too. Unfortunately there are SO many different scenarios, with everyone having a unique setup and components, so I can't say what exactly will solve your problem. Good luck though, and let me know what happens!
Would I be able to use the bogen digital knobs across different devices? It would be nice to use on my mac, as well as my PC at other times as I move around. Like is the installation connected to the account or..?
I would say definitely man! I think once you're provided with a download link, you're given the option to download the program for mac or PC. Just download both!
Thanks man- I just used an AI image creator... I think it was Canva... and I started typing in prompts like, "Make me a dreamy looking image with a guy playing guitar in front of a computer." It would generate a few of them, and I would keep hitting regenerate until I found one I really liked. From there I further manipulated it and added text and all that using GIMP.
i feel like my computer speakers would be a little too weak for amplifying my guitar through a digital amp. can I plug the interface output signal on my guitar amp?
Thanks man! No I decided to stop taking on any outside production work once I went full time with UA-cam. Not enough time in the day to even work on my own stuff!
Damn dude. This is something that I've struggled with 4-6 years ago and it was just so hard to figure out I gave up. Show me how to play along my favorite tool song. I bought an Interface and the one I bought was just way too hard to figure out. I don't have a computer anymore and when I did and I tried I wasn't even sure if the thing I had was even good or strong enough to do the job. I see you were using a MAC. How much is a used one on ebay? Man, I need to stay in contact with you in order to help me digitally record myself when I'm playing my favorite covers. Please help me.
Bro you don’t need to turn the gain knob, when you play or record guitar. The gain knob always must be set on zero position for the cleanest signal possible. Also you need set the buffer much lover (64 or 32 samples) for minimal latency. Cheers!
Personally I've found that keeping my buffer at 512 provides the best results. No noticeable latency, and optimum computer performance. It's a balancing act as your system expands, and you begin using more processor intensive software.
I'm sure it would work out just fine. But as a Mac user, I can't say with 100% certainty. But they're all geared to be used on the system of your choice. I've never used the Focusrite stuff, but I hear of guys using it all the time, and liking it. My recommendation is to just dive in and get started, and figure it out as you go!
I'm not really interested in recording, I just want to practice without disturbing everybody in the house. I want to be able to listen to songs on my computer while playing along with them on my guitar and hear both the song and the guitar through my headphones. Would an audio Interface be good for that? If so, would using peddles or a peddle board work well or would that cause problems?
I hear ya! You may just want to try something like an iRig. sweetwater.sjv.io/iRigHD2 After just researching this briefly, I realize that something like the iRig is actually a much easier way to get your guitar into your computer, than the method I demonstrated in this video! And you'd be able to do exactly what it is you're looking to do. So thanks for the additional shortcut!
This is how i thought it was supposed to go but unfortunately i'm about ten hours into this bullshit with a presonus audiobox itwo and all i have is 2 disabled inputs. outputs fine. no clue how it went so wrong. seems so str8 forward.
Aye.. unfortunately I don't have any experience with the presonus stuff, so I can't offer an easy solution. All I can say is that 99.9% of the time, the problem is just something stupid you may be overlooking. And eventually, you'll have an "ah ha!" moment, and things will begin to work as expected.
Well I'm not sure what your budget is, but these are the monitors I've use and have loved for over a decade! imp.i114863.net/DynaudioBM5mkIII Looks like they have a couple demo models on sale for $425 each right now! But if that's more than you're looking to spend, here's a setup I used all throughout covid when I was forced to shut down my main studio: amzn.to/3weITn5 Only a little over a hundred bucks for the whole setup, and it rocks!
I can't say for sure without seeing your setup and routing for myself, but if it's not a routing issue that could potentially be causing some sort of feedback loop or something, the fix may be as simple as raising the noise gate, which you can do by clicking the little gear icon in the bottom right hand corner of the plugin. Good luck!
@@RobArnoldWorld hey thanks for responding. Still haven't figured out using VST's in a saw but after messing around it was because I needed to use Scarlett ASIO as the input and then it let me have insanely low latency. Thanks to your video I've finally been able to jam with some distortion in the condo, so thank you! Possibly can you show us how to use a VST in a DAW? especially a free one like Reaper?
The audio interface is your new soundcard. The internal soundcards in the PC are mostly not suitable for guitar recording because they have too much latency.
Getting back into guitars after 20 years, and kinda sad the hoops you have to jump through now. Back then Line 6 had a $40 all in one box and software kit that was literally plug n play.
a computer is not a amp, its a DAC, all you need is a audio output and a signal processing program like a equalizer that comes with windows with more functions to change the sound, I can make it sound like a tunnel or underwater why not distortion and other guitar effects, then you need a usb potentiometer pedal switchbox configured with the program
Definitely! For instance, I'll use my wah pedal for solos and stuff, or my digitech whammy pedal for harmony type stuff. Guitar -->pedal --> interface.
You know what's funny? Earlier I was like "I really need to get into plugins and stuff....idk how to do that..." and then I log in... and here we are lol.
@@RobArnoldWorld yeah feedback protection on = input muted to avoid feedback, this will only play the clean tone. But if I turn if off to hear the distortion, my ears got attackedwith noise.

As always Rick, I appreciate you tuning in and interacting bro! And I'm so glad you've been enjoying the stuff! 👊 Heavy Metal Over Everything indeed!
Dude I just came back to guitar after a 15 year "hiatus". Crazy where things have gotten. Fallen back in love and playing guitar again thanks to these sims
The guitar will always welcome you back with open arms!🎸
Saaaaame !
I am also coming back ,getting ready to purchase an interface.
This is exactly the video I needed 6 months ago. I spent days researching and learning about interfaces and how it all worked before I pulled the trigger! This is the perfect guide, top shelf as always.
Aye... I missed the boat!
The nice thing about Rob is he has that steady and downto earth tempo and mellow about things. Most guys just be loud and obnoxious in tutorials, Rob's a gem🤘
👊
Mate this literally couldn't have come at a better time. I'm about to move house and was seriously considering changing to an all computer setup (to save space) and leaving my amps at my friends place (where we jam) so having a guide like this is incredibly useful, thank you!
Right on! 🎸
I hoped to have helped!
i really enjoyed the first 9 minutes.
Stay metal! \m/ 🙂
Aye! I appreciate you tuning in man! 👊🎸
This awesome- this is great for demoing tracks/songs or even making instrumental songs/album
Indeed!
Great job explaining the whole process
Clear and descriptive video, liked and subbed.
Also, you’ve just got a chill vibe helps with delivering all the info and keeping the listener interested.
I really appreciate that man, and welcome aboard! 🎸
I think im steering in this direction before i start buying pedals. This video i find is great to help the decision and dream along. Thanks Rob.
I've been doing this for many years but I always still watch videos to see different possible ways of doing things.
I've been stuck in alot of bored ruts over time, with repeating my own processes.
I hope to offer some inspiration then bro! 🤘

If you have studio quality headphones/monitors aim for 48,000
If you don’t mind me asking what headphones and computer do you have and use ?
Awesome! Happy to help, and best of luck on your journey! 🎸
Excellent tutorial, very informative 😊
🙏
Thanks for the video. Complete newb to this stuff......what would most people do to connect their speakers? It looks like you plugged something through your sound board?
Gotta love how easily accessible home studios are now.
The tech just gets cooler by the month.
I remember when i first bought Pro Tools a long while back.
Was such a cool and frustrating experience, but if ya focus and have the passion.
You can figure anything out!
Nother shredder of a vid brother Rob.
God bless homie. 😉
Hell yeah! I started back in 2006ish with protools and an Mbox! Cheers Holmes!🤘
You don't need a interface btw if your pc has a line in port you just need a 3.5mm adapter and software a mic slot works too but has some noise
Appreciate every single step. A lot of people skip through important parts..
Hey happy to hear that, and I appreciate you tuning in!
Thank u for this video I really appreciate this i’m still a beginner to this kind of thing, so this really help me. Thank you brother Rock on man!!
Happy to help man!🎸
I have basically given up guitar because I have severe hearing damage. My ears ring constantly but they ring at in intensity that I can tolerate. If I play electric guitar through an amp it makes the ringing worse even if it's very low level, like 70dB. I've wondered if my ears would tolerate playing through the computer. Might be worth a try. Thanks for the informative video!
Aye that sucks man... First I'd try seeing a doctor and asking for help. Then, I'd try the methods described in this video! Best of luck! 🤘
Just ordered myself a volt2 thanks for the video.......very informative for a tech dummy like me
Hey happy to hear it, and I think you're going to love the Volt!
Awesome thank you for showing us that are new to using computer as an amp!!!!!
This video brings me so much Joy. You’re a good dude man. 🤘🏽
👊
Hey Rob, I play bass and I want to start playing through my computer and also play along with some music from my favorite bands thru Spotify. I'm going to buy some studio monitors and a interface. I guess it's the same process you just showed?
Yep! You can do all of the above with this setup or one like it!
im a new sub because ur the 1st one from my long quest to learn this stuff you my guy explain step by step very understandable i dont have to guess what u did there. so informative like and subs thank u Rob!

Can you record the click along with the track as well? Would be extremely nice when making guide tracks for studio sessions.
Absolutely!
@@RobArnoldWorld Ok I now got myself a audio interface and downloaded the Bogen amps but I don't get the click track when I record. How do I enable that?
@@RobArnoldWorld I reached out to Bogren Amps and it turns out you can NOT record the click along with the track. Only the riff. So yeah now you know
@@crimsonfiredotnet Oh, I misunderstood your question then.

Awesome!
Lol. Love the Office Space reference 😂😂. Also thank you for the great information.
Here it is on Amazon... check it out! amzn.to/3Qj29Y8
(no adapters or anything needed.
@@nc1969

Here's the set I've used and loved for the past 13 years! imp.i114863.net/DynaudioBM5mkIII
And I just looked, and it appears they have some demo models available for only $350 each! @@nc1969
Have you tried using the fender TMP as an audio interface?
Briefly!
Nice video. I've always wondered how to do this.
I was hesitant at first to go down this path. It makes it so much easier to lay down ideas. It's the Archetype Gojira suite that had me go down that path. Now I use neural Amp modeller, which is free and the community made captures are fantastic. I just need an ir for my real speakers which are a very niche set-up.😂
Dude, the grown hair again is looking sick!.

Great video!…Thank you…Are you connecting your interface to a channel
On the mixer??….I have an interface and monitors, would you recommend a mixer?
Thanks dude! Having a mixer just gives me more routing and connection options, but it's not totally necessary. But yes, I just plugged my Volt into an open channel on my mixer. If I didn't have the mixer, I'd simply plug my monitors straight into the Volt. But let's say I wanted to watch a UA-cam video... the sound from that video would no longer come out of my monitors. It would just come out of my computer. So having the mixer, allows me to plug in a variety of things simultaneously, with individual level controls for each.👌 Hope that helps!

Great thank you 🙏 I never had to play on computer before, let do this 😊
Good luck!🎸
Killer video Rob. What I'd like to see is how you ACTUALLY DO these videos. How the camera, audio AND what you are recording is done. How the video recording works while hearing what you are playing ect. I don't think the camera mic is recording the guitar. Do you record the video and audio from the camera in one program and then record the guitar in another program and then add it in, in editing things like that. Thanks if you consider this. 🤘
Hey thanks bro! So for this particular video I've got:
-an overhead camera filming what I'm doing on my desk.
I think you have the right mindset, and from the sound of it, you'll be producing great content right off the bat.
Check em' out if you're interested! imp.i114863.net/RodeGo
@descent1331
@@RobArnoldWorldawesome bro I will check them out. I'm a gear whore so you are speaking my language. I don't usually buy cheap gear but every once in a while I'm surprised at what a inexpensive piece of gear does. Thanks again for all the info and help.
🤘
How did you get the processed sounds to a live amp? out the laptop to the amp?
The output from H0tone is set to instrument level.. any advice will be great guys and thanks in advance..
I'm not sure what your budget is, but these are the monitors I've use and have loved for over a decade! imp.i114863.net/DynaudioBM5mkIII
But if that's more than you're looking to spend, here's a setup I used all throughout covid when I was forced to shut down my main studio: amzn.to/3weITn5
Only a little over a hundred bucks for the whole setup, and it rocks!
Awesome man thank you very much for letting me know so quickly I'm thinking about the adam ax8 monitors and haven't settled on a daw yet. Basically need a laptop or computer first then the rest.
I don’t have any speaker monitors, is there an alternate way to get the sound? Perhaps through your computer to a Bluetooth speaker?
Definitely! Or you can simply just use headphones! I used headphones for my first 5 years or so!
Hey Rob, quick question...
so i have the volt connected to the PC...
my Speaker system is plugged into the PC
3.5 connection... but i'm not getting any sound from the Volt through speakers?
Just download both!
is there any noticeable input delay when playing ? Like a noticeable space from when you strike the string and then bear it through the speakers ?
Nope! The amount of latency one might hear is dictated more by your DAW, as opposed to the interface itself.
How's the latency. Is it big enough to be noticed?
With the Bogren stuff or the Volt? With the appropriate buffer size setting, there's no noticeable latency.
Awesome thumnail how did you create it
Thanks man- I just used an AI image creator... I think it was Canva... and I started typing in prompts like, "Make me a dreamy looking image with a guy playing guitar in front of a computer."
It would generate a few of them, and I would keep hitting regenerate until I found one I really liked.
From there I further manipulated it and added text and all that using GIMP.
i feel like my computer speakers would be a little too weak for amplifying my guitar through a digital amp. can I plug the interface output signal on my guitar amp?
I suppose you could! (on the clean channel of course!)
@@RobArnoldWorld thanks brother!
Awesome video!! You still doing mixing or producing for bands?
Thanks man! No I decided to stop taking on any outside production work once I went full time with UA-cam. Not enough time in the day to even work on my own stuff!
i have a 2.1 speaker system. the speakers go in to the sub woofer and the woofer into the PC with the classic green earphone jack. is this a problem?
Not at all! It'll work just fine!👌
I'd say you could find a great MacBook air for around $500 on eBay! Walmart.com and BestBuy.com also have very inexpensive refurbished ones!
Loving the dream pop thumbnail. I mean your a handsome chap n all rob but that’s a very pretty picture 😂
Hahaha thanks man!
Would a bass work with a universal audio interface dumb question I know
Definitely! It can record any source! Instruments, microphones, keys, etc.
im using a Esi U22xt bt its not reading the amp for some reason
Rob Arnold the IT-Specialist :) :) :)
If I have a speaker cabinet, where does that plug into?
This video is about using amplifier simulations (amp sims) on/in your computer. It wouldn't integrate with real amp and cabinet situations.
Is ua volt 1 a good option for working on windows or is it better to take focusrite solo 4 gen?
I'm sure it would work out just fine. But as a Mac user, I can't say with 100% certainty. But they're all geared to be used on the system of your choice.
I've never used the Focusrite stuff, but I hear of guys using it all the time, and liking it.
My recommendation is to just dive in and get started, and figure it out as you go!
would this be better than the boss katana mk2 50's tone studio
I'm personally unfamiliar with the boss katana mk2 50's tone studio.
Thank you
I'm not really interested in recording, I just want to practice without disturbing everybody in the house. I want to be able to listen to songs on my computer while playing along with them on my guitar and hear both the song and the guitar through my headphones. Would an audio Interface be good for that? If so, would using peddles or a peddle board work well or would that cause problems?
I hear ya! You may just want to try something like an iRig. sweetwater.sjv.io/iRigHD2
After just researching this briefly, I realize that something like the iRig is actually a much easier way to get your guitar into your computer, than the method I demonstrated in this video! And you'd be able to do exactly what it is you're looking to do. So thanks for the additional shortcut!
@@RobArnoldWorld Thanks, I'll check it out.
Good video
Please suggest a budget Studio Monitor for Metal
Well I'm not sure what your budget is, but these are the monitors I've use and have loved for over a decade! imp.i114863.net/DynaudioBM5mkIII
Looks like they have a couple demo models on sale for $425 each right now! But if that's more than you're looking to spend, here's a setup I used all throughout covid when I was forced to shut down my main studio: amzn.to/3weITn5
Only a little over a hundred bucks for the whole setup, and it rocks!
Any amp sims for bass
Yessir! ua-cam.com/video/lRJAcjlIOm8/v-deo.html
im getting a lot of feedback and a lot of screeching when i use this amp sim im very new too all this can i have some help?
I can't say for sure without seeing your setup and routing for myself, but if it's not a routing issue that could potentially be causing some sort of feedback loop or something, the fix may be as simple as raising the noise gate, which you can do by clicking the little gear icon in the bottom right hand corner of the plugin. Good luck!
im playing through a scarlett solo, but the latency is craaazy. even the lowest setting still feels like a half sec off, can anyone help?
Are you perhaps using any processor intensive plugins within your DAW? Often times, those are the biggest latency culprits!
@@ethanmiles20 Which/what type of VST?
TY man!!
What sound card is preferred on the pc?
Unfortunately as a Mac user, I'm not sure.
What about peddles? Would I be able to send my guitar though my peddles and then send it to the software amp?
Thanks in advance for the reply!
Definitely! For instance, I'll use my wah pedal for solos and stuff, or my digitech whammy pedal for harmony type stuff. Guitar -->pedal --> interface.
Forgot to tell us about the speakers you use?
You know what's funny? Earlier I was like "I really need to get into plugins and stuff....idk how to do that..." and then I log in... and here we are lol.
Haha mission accomplished! 🤘
Tin foil hat moment, they are listening!
WOW!
turn off feedback and the loop screech kills my ears. turn it on and only clean sound is playing. what did I do wrong?
Turn off feedback? I'm not sure what you mean unfortunately.
@@RobArnoldWorld yeah feedback protection on = input muted to avoid feedback, this will only play the clean tone. But if I turn if off to hear the distortion, my ears got attackedwith noise.
Sounds like you might be creating a feedback loop? I'd need to know more about your setup before I can advise!@@jackbaker995
@@RobArnoldWorld i fix it, i forgot to turn off the direct sound from the amp itself. Also I use Reaper which simplifies the technical parts a lot.
