I’ve recently just got back into Bodyboarding thanks to my oldest son. Back in my teen days there was no UA-cam and everything I’ve learned was from experience. Just would like to say Thank you Ian for making such great tutorials because this sport is not like riding a bicycle and I do need professional reminders just because I’m older and a injury takes a bit longer to recover from. You’re doing a awesome job, Mahalo
Thanks for sharing this kind of info, i was looking for this and it's valuable. It's been quite a number of years since i rode waves but i do remember i was able to hold my breath for a minimum of 2 minutes in rest. That would give me a minute during activity. This helped me a lot when i got washed. I tell people that the most important thing is to stay calm. I'm looking at picking up this hobby again when looking at holiday destinations. Thanks, Iain, this video is essential to improve in bodyboarding, helps to gain more confidence once you know how to avoid great impacts on big barrels and shallow reefs.
As a sponger mostly surfing shorebreak these days, I really appreciate your insight. I've noticed for many years that I'd been getting spit out the back pretty consistently when I bailed on what I saw as the "flat" inside the barrel, but it turns out I've been laying onto the trough you mention here. Now that I know this, it's going to make it a lot easier for me to consciously plan bailing when I'm getting nommed by a tube. Thanks a ton Iain, your explanations in general are super enlightening, very easy to understand and super educational even for an experienced surfer like me (20 years of charging this year!). Big respect from Brittany!
Thanks so much for the kind words and glad that I could help some of the legends of the boog like you. It’s all about sharing experiences! Thanks for joining along 🤙🏼🤙🏼
@@iaincampbell_ haha. I'm no legend. I suck. But I love bodyboarding. I guess that's the most important. Last question. Does this work on huge waves like a big day at pipeline or Teahupo'o?
Jack Bleezus I’m sure it would work at pipe but not so sure in Teahupo’o. It’s hard to say it will work all the time but it’s the best way of getting under bigger waves.
Thanks Iain for doing these instructional videos and expanding on what Mike Stewart was doing in Bodyboarding magazine. They're great for beginners, intermediate and advanced riders.

Awesome video! Seems like deciding when to bail is key, barrels get ugly real quick…could you elaborate on when you decide to bail out into the trough?
A few weeks ago I caught a 6-7 foot wave and when it closed out I got sucked up in and over the falls and had a pretty decent hold down. Thx for teaching more abt close outs 🤙
Hi Iain, I can´t actually understand the difference between the Trough and the place where the Lip is hitting the water. Thanks a lot for all you videos! cheers

Thanks so much for this tip. I've been bodysurfing at my local beach break the past few months getting some closeout 1-3ft barrels which has been tons of fun. I think I was kind of doing your method since the wipeouts weren't bad since the shockwave would kind of naturally pop me up and I'd land on my back near the trough. But now that I know to aim for the trough directly it should be even easier going forward. Super good high level tip, thanks a lot man. Love all your content
Where I live, there’s a handful of spots but it’s a geographic deadzone for swell. I’ve mastered the art of beach break booging, which is basically just charging it into 5 foot close out barrels, so thanks for the extra tips haha
Gracias, por poner la tradición al castellano, entiendo que te da más trabajo pero es genial. Para los que no entendemos muy bien el inglés. Muchas gracias.
Great explanation, Iain. The diagram is incredibly helpful. What I'd like to see next is any advice you have on what to do when you can't avoid the lip/getting slammed. Is there a body position or advice you have for those big impacts and/or getting held down by the wave?
I guess it would be the same as the barrel, try land on your back and not your head or feet first. Also the less tense your body is, the better. Just got to let the wave do what it wants to you.
Thanks so much Iain, i love your videos mate, especially the instructional ones - you keep bringing up things i forgot to even think about whilst boogn -Thanks again
Hi Iain, thanks for explaining. Newbie bodyboarders here - having fun learning with my son. We’ve spent the last three days practicing at Boomer Beach. Question about falling out. When your rolling out in the trough on to your back, do you then let go of the board? We found trying to hang onto it, caused us to be dragged with the power of the wave. We’re loving the trill of the water, but have so much to learn 😀 Thanks
Hi Justin. Yes, let go for sure. If you hang on sometimes the wave can land on top of you and the board and pin you to the bottom which isn’t a fun experience. Good luck on your boogie adventure 🤙🏼🤙🏼
In my area, I'm riding very tight closeout barrel. In this case, it's hard to go inside the barrel and it's instead easy to end up under the lip. I have many questions: 1. When you fall into the trough, can you accidentally slip and fall under the lip 2. Do you recommend covering your head if things go wrong 3. Should I find a bigger wave to practice this technique 4. If I go to Sandy Beach in Oahu, does this technique work
1. Most of the time, falling in the trough should push you straight under the wave and avoid the lip. 2. Yes, always cover your head. 3. Sure, if you can. 4. It should work but be careful as sometimes that wave goes dry inside the barrel. Dangerous place to surf so be safe out there.
hi iain really Nice video. what is better when you r falling in a reef wave, drop the bodyboard and get into the "through" area or hold the buggy very very tightly and also get into the "through" area? thank for this videos, they've helped me a lot surfing in Arica -Chile. some day I'd like to surf Flopos, but at the moment I'm surfing Rancio, trying to ride middle or a big one. cheers !
Holding onto the board in the barrel can be a tough ask. Sometimes you can do it but the bigger the wave the bigger the beating and sometimes if you end up on your back and get pushed underwater it could maybe get you between the board and reef/sand, making it very uncomfortable for you. I prefer to let go and go from there.
You can also just keep riding the wave till the very end when its lost most of it's energy. ANd not worry about jumping into it or going back first. This is a good video in my opinion if you have accidently let go of your board. Or have a habit of doing this.
It’s not an accident. It’s the wave and the shockwave in particular that bucks you off. Holding onto your board through that process can result in you lying on the bottom with the board between you and the surface getting pounded.
Is this true because I see videos of people riding heavy close outs but don’t understand how there not getting smashed at the end regardless very helpful video Iain 🫡
@@Viberight-f3i Holding unto the board serves two purposes getting a sick long ride and it provides buoyancy. But you also have to put forward pressure on the board and go down the line. Letting go of the board is fine too if that is what works. This probably works fine except for maybe on a heavy shorebound.
Loving these how to videos! 😍 Please keep them coming! Can you tell me what kind of training you do to supplement your bodyboarding? Do you swim laps and/or train at a gym?
When I was able to swim train, I did about 6-9km in the pool every week. But now it's just getting in the water as much as possible and functional gym training that I focus on. Check my other videos as I have posted some of my exercises and workout on there!
Thanks@@iaincampbell_. Is that because pools are still closed there? I have seen your home workout vids they look great 💪The waves are a bit hit & miss here in South Australia so I've been working on my swimming 🏊 I go twice a week but I'll need more practice to get up to 6-9km! 😅
Yeah the pools are closed still here. I don’t really enjoy swim training but it’s a quick 1 hour session every couple days can really help your fitness. Just do what you can in the pool. I grew up swimming 3 times a week from when I was young so it’s really easy for me to get my fitness up in the pool.
Another banger from the man 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾. Thank you Iain. Quick question (sorry if somebody already asked)... why land on your back instead of facing the bottom and do a regular dive?
I really can’t answer that correctly or have a good reason for it. I feel that landing on my back is just a momentum shift from the wave hitting my rail and sending me into a rolling sensation. Landing in that way just because that’s how the wave has thrown me.
Hi Iain! Did you ever do the duck out video? I always end up getting caught in the foam and washed back towards the beach. Makes for a tight paddle back out!!! 🥵
Hello Iain !! Thanks for the video , the thing that most pushes me back from improving in BB and scares me most from trying hitting the lips and trying manoeuvres is the fear of being trapped for a long time under the wave, please give more tips on how to scape from foam when you fail a manoeuvre or a wave hits you , greetings from spain 🙌😊
Sure, I can do that for sure. it's all about just relaxing your body and not struggling with trying to fight the ocean. Although she is so much fun there are times when she is going to hold you down for a bit long but getting the confidence to be calm underwater is key!
Hey Ian thanks for the vid, are you saying if you are catching a right hand wave, in the barrel, and it closes out, then you roll over to your left (towards the lip breaking) onto your back ?
Ok ok so say I catch a good wave right? And the other end closes out. And I have no choice but to stay in the barrel and let it close on me..do I hold my board for dear life? Or do I let go the board and hold my breathe till it's clear to come up? That's always something I wondered. The waves I go on aren't huge like the ones you go on but they aren't no small 2 footers either. Hope this was easy for you to understand. Thanks Ian.
Depends where you are surfing and how big it is. Sometimes it’s dangerous to hold onto your board as it could push you into the sand or reef and other times it’s a bit safer to do that. But letting go generally gets you up and out of there quicker.
Nice, Thanks. I would be interested in your technique on riding a high line for staying in tight almond-shapes barrels. Do you stall with leg to help wave pull you higher up the face. Or just turn your way up to a high line?
That’s quite technical but all comes down to legs and rail. Mid to high line surfing is really not my thing but when it needs to be done it’s all about controlling the rail and how the board sits in the water.
Hi Ian, Thanks a lot for the great information you supply us. You really help us a lot. This is pure passion. I have a question: I struggle a lot getting me on my board moving farward especially to the lineup with my fins no matter how strong and hard I paddle with my feet. If I wouldn't use my arms and shoulders to paddle and support my feet, I would barley get forward. It feels really bad then while seeing other bodyboarders speeding past me without even having to use the arms for support. I wonder if I have the wrong paddling technique or maybe wrong fins, I just don't get it. Maybe it's because I am 1,93 m tall.... I am confused because I am a quite good and fast swimmer. Sometimes I drop my board and swim instead to get quicker to the line up. Without my board I am way faster with fins and arms. I just don't get it. My duck diving technique is alright with board though. Have no problems with that. Best regards from the Netherlands (I surf in France in Portugal)
Hi there. So there are a number of things that could be wrong. Your technique when you paddle, your legs staying submerged and in the water or maybe it’s the size of your board. Because you’re so tall you need either a board that is bigger to give you more buoyancy or you may just need to increase the amount of foam. Without seeing any pictures or video there is nothing else I can suggest to you. Remember to stay centred on your board so you can be in the best position when you’re out in the water. I hope this helps and give you some sort of insight.
You spoke if I understood of the trough as being a safe falling place. Isn't this the impact zone?! I'm a little confused about this. Please clarify. I'd love to be a master of safety above all other things. I'm in the waves it a LOT these days. Xo
Does a hawaiin pull out work on these big shorebreak and reefbreak waves. Or should i just stick to this. I have been riding for a year and I would say I have the technique down and I can even do tricks. I'm just to scared to go into a barrel and not break my neck. Any more advice?
Don’t know if it’s worth making a video because it’s simple, use spit. Spit on the lens and rub it with your tongue and then keep doing that throughout your surf. It’s what water photographers do and works wonders.
Thanks a lot for the informative video. These really help me a lot. Just one question, what kind of exercises would you suggest to someone that isn't always able to surf to often due to being away for school? School starting again for me and i'll be away from the ocean for sometime =(. Obviously experience is the best way to get better, but do you know exercises people should be doing when out of the water to perform better? Thanks again for the content
Hey Iain, love the channel! Can you tell me what kit and setup you’re using to record these clips? Looks like a great way to review your own performance 💪🏼 thanks man!
Hey bru. I have been using a GoPro and mouth mount for most of the water stuff and then a Sony A7iii for most of the land stuff. I have a list of all my gear in the description of the video if you want to check it out.
Yes,indeed. I take care and never try to catch something really crazy. I like shorebreaks cause you can catch many waves. During winter water is like 9-11°C here so you don t have to wait a lot for waves and you can catch many waves in short time
@@iaincampbell_ thanks yes, sometimes is pretty cold and you need a lot of motivation to go in. But with a 4/3, hood and gloves is ok. In northwest Spain there are a lot of waves :)
This might be a really stupid question but I am an overthinker so meh :D When do you decide to fall instead of trying to continue to ride it? In the 1st and 2nd clip I can see the whole wave is breaking at once basically, so there's no way to really finish the wave. But is it better to rather fall of early than to try and stay until it collapses? I will soon be having fun at dappat se gat with all this. I love a challenge! Hope you are having fun in Hawaii :D
Digging all these vids and info Iain! So rad to see quality content for boogers! For a weekend warrior like myself, do you rate there is a massive difference between a 42" (which I normally to ride) and a 41,5" (which I just got as there was no 42")? Thanks again! 🤙
Hi bru. I personally can feel a big difference as I am used to riding 42 and I order a 41.75 and could feel it immediately. For the average person, a .5 inch difference might feel a slight difference in buoyancy but no it’s not going to make a huge difference.
It's going to compromise your body position in bigger steeper waves where you really want to be leaning your left hip/side heavily on your inside rail.
When you "fall back" I am thinking that your saying throwing my head back into the wave and laying on my back? I was hurt during SO Cals cyclone bomb and I don't know how I could've avoided getting hurt trying to pull out before the wave closed. I was going left, the wave was big and I saw the sand coming so I wanted to duck out before it closed out. And, I went through but it sucked me over the falls and was lipped. Help with some advice?
I would suggest ditch your board when you’re in that position. It will help you get out of the wave and stop you from getting pulled over with the wave.
Love these videos! You're the only bodyboarder who's doing this sort of video at the moment. Keep up the good work
Thanks and will do.

Thanks man. Stoked you’ve been doing it already!
Very useful video Thx
Glad it was helpful!
Grate video for the Next tutoria can you teach US how to do an ARS por a air foward
I don’t have enough footage of either of those moves but once I do I will get those videos done.

Great tutorial, keep it up 👍
Thanks, will do!
Oh yess this is so good for me especially cos I’m going to my local wedgy shore break spot tomorrow so will defo try these tips then
Give it a go just don’t be surprised if you land on the sand in the shorebreak trying this.
Iain Campbell ye I mean at least it’s sand so much better place to try this out I guess. Cheers bru 🤙
Perfect place to try it out!
Iain Campbell cheers bru that technique is sick
Another banger from the man 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾. Thank you Iain. Quick question (sorry if somebody already asked)... why land on your back instead of facing the bottom and do a regular dive?
I really can’t answer that correctly or have a good reason for it. I feel that landing on my back is just a momentum shift from the wave hitting my rail and sending me into a rolling sensation. Landing in that way just because that’s how the wave has thrown me.
@@iaincampbell_ you "go with the flow" 😂😂😂 I get it. Thank you for always taking your time to answer our questions 🙏🏿
Hi Iain! Did you ever do the duck out video? I always end up getting caught in the foam and washed back towards the beach. Makes for a tight paddle back out!!! 🥵
I haven’t but I will try when I can. Hawaii I am focusing on this area but I am creating a list. Duck out and duck dive videos coming up…
@@iaincampbell_ thanks man and appreciate you engaging with the community! Have a good one man!!! 🤙🏼

No problem 👍
thanks so much for yur help bro !

Iain Campbell thank you so much for taking the time of answering personally, i will get more involve in your channel and ask you more stuff 😉
Epic bru !!
Hey Ian thanks for the vid, are you saying if you are catching a right hand wave, in the barrel, and it closes out, then you roll over to your left (towards the lip breaking) onto your back ?
Yes that’s exactly what I am saying. Into the trough.
Muchas gracias otra vez amigo!!
Gracias por ver.
@@iaincampbell_ thanks ☺️👍
Nice, Thanks. I would be interested in your technique on riding a high line for staying in tight almond-shapes barrels. Do you stall with leg to help wave pull you higher up the face. Or just turn your way up to a high line?
That’s quite technical but all comes down to legs and rail. Mid to high line surfing is really not my thing but when it needs to be done it’s all about controlling the rail and how the board sits in the water.
Hi Ian,
Thanks a lot for the great information you supply us.
Xo
No, the impact zone is where the lip hits the surface of the water. The trough is what happens thereafter.
Always called this " parting of the seas " used to ride with out leash used to hang on drop into the trough and spit out the back
That’s exactly what it is 🤣
Good Job!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Very useful Thks!
Glad it was helpful!
I know this is for body boarding, but any advice for surfing and avoiding your board swinging around and hitting you after the fall in the tube?
Unfortunately I’m not too sure. But I can’t see it being much different from this process. Maybe just stay down underwater a bit longer.
@@iaincampbell_ thank yoy
Super sick vid🤙🏼
Do you think this method will work bodysurfing at the wedge?
It might but I’m not too sure.
Does a hawaiin pull out work on these big shorebreak and reefbreak waves. Or should i just stick to this. I have been riding for a year and I would say I have the technique down and I can even do tricks. I'm just to scared to go into a barrel and not break my neck. Any more advice?
I have no idea what a Hawaiian pull out is… but this technique should work better.
AWESOME KEEP IT UP
Gracias ian sos mi ídolo . Haces altos videos saludos de argentina estaría bueno q venga a andar en body a la esco en necochea
Thank you and welcome to the channel 🤙🏼
Great video Iain. Would you be able to create a video on how you keep your go pro free from water droplets? That's been my demise recently!!
Don’t know if it’s worth making a video because it’s simple, use spit. Spit on the lens and rub it with your tongue and then keep doing that throughout your surf. It’s what water photographers do and works wonders.
@@iaincampbell_ haha, that's brilliant! I'll give that a whirl! All the best from New Zealand.
Nice to have you here on the channel. Welcome to the boogie community!
Swimming is the best exercise if you can get to a pool.
@@iaincampbell_ thanks man! Really appreciate the reply! 🤙🏼
Really interesting video.☺️ What about shorebreaks?sometimes is too dry to do that, any tip? I surf in sand beach breaks.
Shore breaks are another beast and should be respected as such. Unfortunately if it goes dry you really don’t have too many options.
Yes,indeed. I take care and never try to catch something really crazy. I like shorebreaks cause you can catch many waves. During winter water is like 9-11°C here so you don t have to wait a lot for waves and you can catch many waves in short time
Wow that’s cold man. Epic that there are waves there but not so epic that it’s freezing. Anyway enjoy it bru. Stay safe.
@@iaincampbell_ thanks
yes, sometimes is pretty cold and you need a lot of motivation to go in.
I’m never jumping off my board when I do that unless it’s a straight close out. I’m only falling when I get hit by the shockwave. Thanks man.
Hello from portugal ! is it bad that I use my right hand on the nose and my left hand in the side doing a left wave? Hope you understand my doubt
Nah bro cross grip like ledg Pat Caldwell
It's going to compromise your body position in bigger steeper waves where you really want to be leaning your left hip/side heavily on your inside rail.
It will be very tough when getting onto bigger waves but it’s however you want to ride, if it works for you.
@@iaincampbell_ thanks, here in my zone the maximum height is around 3 meters
When you "fall back" I am thinking that your saying throwing my head back into the wave and laying on my back? I was hurt during SO Cals cyclone bomb and I don't know how I could've avoided getting hurt trying to pull out before the wave closed. I was going left, the wave was big and I saw the sand coming so I wanted to duck out before it closed out. And, I went through but it sucked me over the falls and was lipped.
Help with some advice?
I would suggest ditch your board when you’re in that position. It will help you get out of the wave and stop you from getting pulled over with the wave.
do you wanna fall on ur back on a surfboard in the barrel or does it not matter too much
I’m not too sure about a surfboard. A bit different I think!
Siempre quería ver un video así de como caerse dentro del tubo muchas gracias
No worries bru!
Esperando la segunda parte con muchas ganas tus videos me an ayudado mucho gracias broo
Hey Alain, every time I get barrel I kinda end up doing a front flip. doubt know why? wrong positionon the wave?
Possibly or the wave just throwing you around a bit. There are a lot of variables to how the wave throws you.
