The MUNCHIES Guide to Norway (Part 1)

- The journey starts in Oslo where we meet our host Halaigh Whelan-McManus at Maaemo, the three-star Michelin restaurant where he works as a souschef. After talking to his boss about the wonders of Norway’s nature and culinary potential - and having a chat with locals about what Norwegians really like to eat (yes, you guessed it, frozen pizzas), Halaigh heads to the west coast to go diving for some of the world’s most sought-after scallops. After eating raw, live scallop on the boat, the fishermen invite Halaigh back for a home-cooked feast with scallop gratin , bacon-wrapped scallops and plenty of cold beer. Further down the south-coast, in Stavanger, we get a sample of what happens when these scallops get into the hands of a sushi master. At sushi restaurant Sabi Omakase, head chef Roger Asakil gives Halaigh a lesson in how to cut fish, before treating him to sushi made with a local twist, including smoked reindeer heart.

It's so wonderful being welcomed by strangers, especially into their home with food and hospitality. People are inherently good.

Can´t wait for this guy to try the king crabs in the north region, more specifically outside Kirkenes in Finnmark. Brings me back to my enlisted days in the army when the tide was low; so we could pick up the crabs by hand and boiled the legs on a fire by the beach. Good times.

This was phenomenal, and the host is just really likeable dude. I can't wait to go to Norway this February, as it will be my first time! Everyone seems so friendly and welcoming, I'm going to be enjoying loads of seafood and beer.
You could tell the sushi chef died a little inside when he dropped his creation.

Love the host. Perfect balance between light-hearted and good content. All of his episodes thus far have been fantastic.
The conservation of scallops explained at 5:15 is amazing. To see fishermen doing their part to prevent overfishing is great to see.

Great host! Refreshing to see a younger chef that’s not a hipster who’s too full of themselves on Munchies. I’ve never thought about it much but Norway has great conditions for developing a strong sushi scene in its restaurant industry.
