- Bergen, Norway - After the crazy Trolltunga Hike, Steve and I packed up our Vrbo near Odda and continued our Norwegian road trip to Bergen.
Steve went off to find the best things to do in Bergen while I walked around the city in search of great Norwegian foods based on local recommendations.
From salmon sashimi at the fish market and reindeer sausage from a street stall, to the famous Norwegian brown cheese and traditional Norwegian dishes such as Lapskaus and meat balls.
It was a great day of eating in Bergen, Norway!

As a norwegian I'm happy to see others like Norway. The food is fantastic, but we eat it every day, so we don't think about it that way. But one thing I have to say - You can NOT buy brunost in done pieces(?) (My english writing skills is bad), you need to buy 500g and cut it yourself, and yes, with homemade strawberry-yam and butter is magic. Nice video bro

The sliced cheese is pretty much the same as the blocks, it's little more expensive and takes up more space but that's it. We usually buy it in blocks tho✌️

Kudos for making it to 3 Kroneren in Bergen. Best sausages in Norway! ...and you do not get more authentic than with "kjøttkaker" (meatballs) - all Norwegians have a grand-ma who who has perfected cooking meat balls.
I am one of those lucky guys who can eat that sort of food all day. I am a Norwegian off course! The courses you show in this video is what we call husmannskost ( ordinary household food / daily food), but also be aware that Norway has some of the best chefs in the world with many Michelin stars and are developing both new trends and using unusual raw material like seaweed from our great fjords. Also try smoked sheep heads!

I spent 7 years in Bergen - in my late teens/early twenties - after moving there from London. It's such a small city, that I recognise every street you filmed on 😅 Thanks for the nostalgia! :)
Never had Norwegian cuisine but the way you tell the story in this video makes me want one, good job as always. BTW, that scenery while your on the funicular ride is spectacular.

Yes, it is very expensive, but if you plan ahead you can do it on a budget. It is so beautiful!
Many of the larger cities have a card which will get you into most museums, places of interest and restaurants either free or discounted. Travel within a certain proximity is free too.

It is expensive because all those who work and provide services need to earn well to live with dignity. It's not that expensive for us Norwegians, because the salaries paid here are high as well👍

The brown cheese you had is the processed factory product. If you ever come back to Bergen (or Norway for that matter), I recommend you try the real thing which is called Ekte Geitost (genuine goat brown cheese), which is only made in mountain farms dotted around the country, but sold in well assorted grocery stores. Being in effect a caramelized sweetish chevre, it is definitely an esoteric cheese :) But put a couple of slices on a fresh, buttered Rosinbolle (raisin bun), you’ll have yourself a little slice of heaven!

Great video...thank you much....wife and I going to be there in a couple months from now. We will stop at the Pingeven for some meatballs and fish pie.
When you come to norway, take a note of where you arrive. If you are landing at Oslo Gardermoen airport, that place has rich history of it's own. I can mention 1 thing. There's a tiny tiny really old forrest. It's just a stones throw away from the airport. There's a downed WW2 aircraft down there.
The area arround Oslo airport has a story dating all the way back to the viking age. Google it, it might surprise you:)
Not do only the traditional things, like the fjords and the touristy stuff, do some research and find some unik places that might not get that much attention.
Look up the forrest arround Trandum. "Trandum skogen(Trandum forrest)". It has a pretty aweful story, but yet again a important little insight into norwegian and local areas WW2 history in it.
Just a suggestion, but it might make your stay here a little bit more interesting.
PS.
Maybe a visit to the closest city to the airport, JESSHEIM and visit Sundby tunet hotell and try out some local beer and foods.

We just got back from Bergen in May, there was a fish market by the harbour which the food were fantastic! You have a great Norway series!

Brunost is the best! It can be hard to find here in the U.S. but specialty cheese shops or counters in a nice grocery store will often carry it. So delicious. We’re traveling to Norway next Spring so loved seeing this video pop up this morning. Thank you!
It definitely grew on me throughout the trip, and now I want to buy some in the US as well!
If you guys want to try the beast version of Gudbrandsdalsost (Brunost), buy the cubes, not the pre-sliced packs.. the taste and concistency is very different! 😉 PS. Buy from the TINE brand, not Synnøve!!.. also BIG difference. Synnøve is not the actual cheese. They call it "Gudbrandsdals type". Its kind of like pepsi and coca cola 😂

Being from Bergen myself, I did not know about the restaurant or that hot dog stand, passed them so many times. But had no clue. The nice weather is extremely rare, that was very lucky.

Beautiful city, loved the fish markets at the harbor. I'd live in Norway in a heart beat if it wasn't so cold and expensive. Gareth next to me you are the most eating person in the world-love it.
I’m from Bergen, and the fish marked is just robbery.. if you want sushi go to Nama or some it ehh.. itch-b..hjejshas like that, the last one is more of a takeaway, but much more cheaper.. and a fun fact: the fish market buys brunost, kaviar, and even shrimp from Rema 1000 (the grocery above the street) when they are empty 🤷🏼♀️🙈

My roadtrip with my dad in Norway was magical ! My favorite thing to eat was the brown cheese, I had it on a kind of waffle and it was soooo good. I tried it in a restaurant in Bergen hehe. We went to Floyen and did a cruise in the fjords. I'd do anything to go back in Norway

It's even more beautiful to live there, and you never get tired of the view down (out) the fjord.
Many tourists (Norwegians too) come there to visit Trolltunga.
But there is a plethora of good hikes around for the experienced outdoor person (assuming you sleep outside).

I was in Bergen for a few weeks and I absolutely loved that reindeer sausage at trekroneren, had it about 5 times. You shoulda also tried Hval (whale) steak and Aquavit. My favorite thing about Norway was how cheap and good the salmon was, even the cheapest frozen salmon (first price brand) was waaayyy better than most the salmon i can get in Canada. Cheers

Gudbrandsdalsost, brown cheese from the valley of Gudbrandsdalen. I eat it nearly every morning on slices of bread with jam on top, and cold milk to it!; delicious 🤗
Wowww....beautiful picturesque place. The house you stayed in seems a bit small though. Specially when you went up the attic, thought Vikings were giants 😁 but it was really quirky style like that of of an old English cottage. Massive sausage looks appetising and seem you gobbled it up in no time 😁

You should have gone over to Voss when you were there and got the Smalahove (sheepshead) experience. Epic stuff.

Great content. I like that you researched and talked with the locals. I have only been to bergen 2 or 3 times so a lot of this was new to me. Greetings from Oslo/Ålesund. Btw I think you would have loved visiting Ålesund and the areas around. In winter you could rent a car and watch the most amazing sceenery and drive to an alpine activity park to ski/snowboard if you like that. If your not big on wintersport, I would rather come around spring/summer (may-august)

we went to the open wet market in Bergen and we bought the freshest of seafoods. Mussels, Walking crabs, shrimps and Lobsters and Salmon and cook them at the vacation house we've rented.

Odo (sp?) looks like a Christmas village. It's really beautiful.
I knew Bergen was the second city before you said it, because I've read the books of Jo Nesbo, a great Norwegian author of detective novels.
I'd hate to have to look at the top of your head after you've spent a day in your Bergen rooms...or on that house boat.

You should come to Sunndalsøra if you wanted to experience spring :D Here we have the first spring way before the rest of the country. Its also a wonderful nature shoot with one of northern Europe longest waterfall and highest mountains from sea level

It is always refreshing when a foreigner are able to describe what brown cheese actually is, so thanks for that. It is rich in the minerals that are not part of ordinary cheese for obvious reasons. For norwegians in general it is a flavour that taste like home. Try it sometime with hot chocolate or sweet tea (hot chocolate is recommended), and do not skimp on the butter.

I LOVE brunost! Especially with fruits(apples, oranges, kiwi etc., the more sour the better the taste)
