Did the GPS mod with a cut down index card. Had my first flight today without camera and am quite impressed. Hovers and holds position well with 9-12 satellites IN 12-15MPH WINDS!! after a short flight in turtle mode I turned up rates for higher performance. Flying 3-5 feet off ground at high speed making banked turns and holding altitude without difficulty. Auto take-offs and landings are dialed in nicely BY 3dr, however, I am sure you can change some of the parameters to your liking in Mission Planner. Also tried to connect Tower App using UDP, and it connected without a hitch. I have the gimbal, but, my Xiaomi Yi is too big for the bracket, and the HDMI port is on the back instead of the left side of the camera. However, with a $4.00 bracket, I can mount the Xiaomi Yi to the underside of the Solo without the Gimbal and still use the HDMI connection for live video feed. I am looking into finding another Gopro clone which has the right dimensions for fitting the gimbal, however, I may just end up getting a used Gopro 3+ Black ($150-$200 avg)
newest 3dr mod for me. antenna mod. first time I took my brand new solo out I got about a thousand feet range and that was all couple of trips were about 800 a couple of trips were about 1200 feet. so I looked at my home router and it had some 5dbi longer antennas and I now have them on my controller. I've done three trips over 3000 feet and one trip that was 4950 feet. can't wait for the new 7dbi antennas that I have ordered
Was going to get an Eachine pioneer S350 because it was cheap and open source for waypoints etc , but you have persuaded me to get one of these recon Solo's instead , same sort of money for a superior quad , I'm a cheapskate so not buying a gopro 4 , I will bodge it for my S7 .with an extended micro hdmi cable. Nice one !
It boggles the mind that 3dr could allow a product to be shipped which has GPS issues related to electrical interference. It's not like this same problem has not been an issue with all the previous APMS and pixhawks. I feel really bad for the folks who shelled out $1000+ when these first came out. I'm happy I just paid less than $300 for mine
Ross Bassette I agree I kind of feel like the GPS module installation was really half-assed. I can't believe they would allow these to leave from the factory knowing that it has these issues and the fact that I bought a refurb and it was not fixed after the fact really boggles me
Oh yea should've clarified, I meant with a static mount! Actually found a vid on using the gimbal with NON GoPro cams! Really easy mod! Might look into that down the line. Not really a photo guy just hobbyists! Looking forward to your future reviews of this bird!
Dan, With my Solo, same batch as yours, I get 11-12 after 2 mins. However, I'm still doing mod to prevent a potential vibration induced failure between copper shield and GPS board
The Rc Hunter well the q500 does not really require modifications cuz it's already a good bird but I would like to see more range out of it so we will have to install the antenna kit but the solo is a fun bird to modify and play with because it's open source of course meaning lots of untapped features to play with
excellent mod...but instead of cardboard, I think I would have used the good old Faithful, tried and tested, insulating tape... cardboard tends to act like a sponge and sucks up moisture from the air...

+Antwon Taylor it actually really depends my friend on how much you keep it moving when you stop and hover it eliminates the battery fast but if you stay on the move you can easily get 18 minutes at one set speed. IFly mine at around 22 miles per hour and I've been able to cover almost a 4 Mile round trip in 18 minutes.
I tried every variation of tricks and pointers trust me !! It's plenty of disappointed 3dr Solo buyers out there hate the battery 15mins tops . Maybe battery defects who knows .. But it is a issue and a year later you shut down business .. Well I guess you got the good batch BATTERY who k.les once again .. Now discontinue Hummmmm!!!!!!......
I wonder if they updated the gps mount... I received my solo last week and it took maybe 2 minutes to get 8/9 satellites (and that's in a valley with trees all around). I still ordered the mRo gps... for me it's a mandatory upgrade.
I went to do this mod and found I had rev B :). was getting 7 to 9 SATs , did the mod anyway and now getting 10 to 12 SATs... only tested in one area so hoping to see more at different locations.
fishtremble2002 don't wait too long it's still $1,000 drone and easily worth it. few simple problems to fix out of the box if necessary and then nothing holding you back. it's an open-source unit so people have been able to create tons of firmware and applications to use with it it's pretty ridiculous the amount of features that has now thanks to awesome Developers
if you haven't bought the mro GPS for solo yet do it I'm sure you have seen other videos 21 sats on the ground in town for me. must do for confidence in GPS lock and hold. you seem down to earth not a yuppie dick head w dad's money hope to see more of you Chun
Hay I'm trying to get rid of this annoying beeping noise when I turn it on it looks for solo too pair but goes in too this frantic beeping noise any ideals on how too get rid of
Probably came with the REV B board. I hope your ready for the Solo because its Now a DIY platform. No more support or parts and all battries are from 2015 they are now failing and almost all gone. We have started making DIY battery builds now to run the solo on new battery packs.
Thanks. It is just a really cool drone and the price was right. I have always wanted one but thought they were a little pricey. On the look out for some addition batteries so will keep you in mind.
I just got my 3dr solo and when i try to connect it to app it says authentication problem so i can't connect ive tried typing sololink which is what it said to do in setting. Then i tried the password they had me create incase thats what it was, nothing. I have new rev b and can get 9 sats in 2 min. In house and 1 minute to get 13 to 14 outside. Also i can't get quad to fly faster then jyu hornet s when jyu is set in 1st gps position. In other words at a crawl. What I'm doing wrong? Sincerely William Horsley
+William Horsley if you're using the original solo app you won't be able to authenticate your account because the solo team is not around anymore. You can still use the app you just can't register. You need to turn on Advanced features if you're going to fly fast then you can adjust your speed settings. Top speed in GPS mode is 55 miles per hour top speed in sport mode is 75 miles per hour but you will need to activate Advanced features
+William Horsley you really need to purchase solex from the Android market because it is ten times more advanced for the solo and way better functionality then the clunky standard solo app
I did the same mod, but my GPS board had 2 chips on it. Any idea what the second chip is? Also now I get satellite lock in 45 to 60 seconds after the mod.
as my hubsan flew away I'm doin abit of research as I want a more of a professional camera drone but I'm not sure what one to get. any ideas? keep the videos flowing!!
how can satalites communicate with millions of devices phones gps car systems and drones?this confuses me:( but the drone is beatiful and I love the videos very descriptive
Hi Drone Worship. DJ Soul Force said to ask you. I was landing my 3DR Solo on auto and when it touched down without thinking i splayed sticks to kill motors. Opps.just got done flying hubsan 501s anyway i got a brief control stick error and it flipped no damage that i could tell. Relaunched and had good sat 11 as i was doing flight check hit rth and it came back perfectly except light pattern was off color not red. I did factory reset on both 3dr and controller. They won't bind or even find each other. Did 30 sec pressing of reset on quad and til it said reseting controller. I'm at a loss as to what to do . Thank you for your advice. William Horsley
I guess i got lucky, i have a rev A and a solo with Rev B both always gets 11 to 14 sats in less than 2min. Thats low compared to the Typhoons and the P3.
You get less satellites on the Solo because it's GPS is older and only operates on either USA GPS or Russian GLONASS, whereas the Typhoon and P3 have a newer GPS which does both GPS and GLONASS at the same time. This gives more satellites to lock onto. I think that some of the upgraded GPS modules you can buy 3rd party for the Solo are the newer GPS units that do both GPS and GLONASS, so they should work a lot better! BTW- the actual GPS antenna is on the top-facing side of the GPS module, but the copper pad being too close or touching the shield on the GPS chip (the metal box on the board) acts as a ground plane and shifts the resonant frequency of the GPS antenna and affecting reception of GPS signals. I would suspect (but haven't tested) that adding a thin foam sheet (but thicker than the cardboard) between the GPS board and the copper shielding would work better at separating the copper and not be prone to retaining moisture. Or you could use an EMF shielding paint on the foam sheet you use (or just use a plastic sheet) and eliminate the copper altogether, it should have less of a ground plane effect on the GPS module by doing it that way, allowing for even better reception. That's pretty much what the newer Solo GPS Shield V2 from 3DR does, though it uses a better material than just carbon paint.
First off Wouldnt a camera tripod help makes doing these things easier, secondly cardboard retains moisture not good for sensitive electronics, use plastic instead, the whole problem with the gps unit is the antenna feed is grounding out from the copper foil 3dr pilots has a whole write up on this and they do insist you do not use cardboard..
+xevets awesome good information and yes I have a tripod however when I'm doing mods like this I like to get up close and personal I hate videos with tripods where you can't see what the hell is going on. Getting the camera up nice and close makes for an easy breakdown for anyone with questions. I'm not quite sure where moisture would come from but hey a whole community of people can't be wrong good looking out
just going from a warm home to say your car sitting overnight would induce moisture into the cardboard think about that for a moment, also what community is doing the cardboard mod using cardboard?
xevets relax my friend I meant the community of people you were talking about saying that cardboard picks up moisture. seems like you're getting a little confrontational for no reason lol create not hate my friend relax.
Then it causes the copper to ground out on the top of the GPS making it very difficult to get satellites you can choose to use cardboard or cover the top of the GPS with electrical tape the choice is yours either way this mod definitely helps acquire satellites faster and keep connected to them better
Drone Worship I actually meant to say without any cardboard or copper. I was able to acquire six satellites in less than 1 min with no copper and cardboard!
Jaffrey H the problem is the electronic interference from the rest of the Drone that is why the copper is in there to keep the interference away from the GPS. So basically you'll be flying around and all of a sudden get some interference from the electronics inside and your solo will go absolutely Bonkers and Swan Dive or fly away 😉 the choice is yours many have tried it pretty much everyone I can think of has failed
Cem Aydin I have not flown it since I performed the mod it's too dark out. honestly even with seven satellites it did not have drift at all it seems to be very stable with its lock even in windy conditions
Rob Masters I would say that is completely up to you and what your needs are and how big your wallet is I know that my refurb came with a 6 month warranty.
Hey buddy, Happy New Years 2019. Hey boss I’m having problems with my Compass Calibration. I’ve tried all on Opened Field, and still it doesn’t works and the bird don’t fly. Nevertheless when I do a Compass Calibration would I also need to do the Level Calibration as well . Do you think that I’m going to need a Compass MOD & which One would it be ?

I haven't flown my solo yet. But if I'm having trouble getting satellites, I will be trying this out.
My Solo is coming today already was advised to do mod straight out of the box. Glad yours worked too.

I still like my M robotic GPS board. It costs 49 dollars more then the cardboard. Lol.

They just send out the time , the receiver does all the triangulation etc

I have noticed that when i go to a new local the A takes a bit longer to get all the Sats.

Hum, I installed the Rev B board tonight and could only get 9 sats! UAV said Sats Locked 10.9 not good to fly so this may be my issue ?
Went ahead and ordered an M8N U-blox though....want glosnass and such

What if one doesnt put a cardboard piece and just put the copper
Then it causes the copper to ground out on the top of the GPS making it very difficult to get satellites you can choose to use cardboard or cover the top of the GPS with electrical tape the choice is yours either way this mod definitely helps acquire satellites faster and keep connected to them better
Drone Worship I actually meant to say without any cardboard or copper. I was able to acquire six satellites in less than 1 min with no copper and cardboard!
Jaffrey H the problem is the electronic interference from the rest of the Drone that is why the copper is in there to keep the interference away from the GPS. So basically you'll be flying around and all of a sudden get some interference from the electronics inside and your solo will go absolutely Bonkers and Swan Dive or fly away 😉 the choice is yours many have tried it pretty much everyone I can think of has failed

I get 11 out of the box but it drifts a bit.
going from 6 to 14 did you see improvement in drift
Cem Aydin I have not flown it since I performed the mod it's too dark out. honestly even with seven satellites it did not have drift at all it seems to be very stable with its lock even in windy conditions

Rob Masters I would say that is completely up to you and what your needs are and how big your wallet is I know that my refurb came with a 6 month warranty.

Nevertheless when I do a Compass Calibration would I also need to do the Level Calibration as well . Do you think that I’m going to need a Compass MOD & which One would it be ?
