I wanted to stop in and say..THANK YOU! Crashed my drone many times like Im sure the rest of us have, but a major crash FUBARed my original gimbal. I could find forum after forum about how to use gimbals and Storm32 boards and such. But never a video. And here I am, watching yours, and you went over everything we needed. No crazy wiring, and you even included all the links to the needed parts. Truly a hero we all need but don't deserve.
Justin G brother this is only a step in the right direction. These take a lot of tuning to get them working correctly just because it looks smooth on my table does not mean you will get the same results in the air these take a lot of tuning you need to connect them to your computer and tune them properly with software to make them work 100% correctly. There's a reason these gimbals are only$40 and the solo gimbal is so much more expensive. Also be aware you do not have camera setting controls which means you will not be able to take pictures while you're in the air you can only manually start and stop a video before you take off and when you land by pushing the record button you will have fpv and you will have tilt controls during the flight and you will be able to run other cameras like GoPro Hero 5 and GoPro Hero 6 but you will be very limited to your abilities with this setup. This is just the first phases of what's to come for the solo as more people get frustrated by the lack of gimbals we will start seeing more involvement on other people's parts and hopefully we will pull together as a community and make a whole new plug-and-play gimbal for this unit but until then this is available to all good luck tuning you're going to need it
After reviewing your video .. I purchased the a "IFLYRC CNC 2 Axis Brushless Gimbal +Controller for GoPro 3 Kamera DJI-Black" on ebay for $36.69. It is a really nice gimbal setup and very pleased with it .. Getting ready to do the rest of the hook up this weekend ... The card looks like yours so I am pleased with the design of the product .. Will give you an update when I have it setup .. Again! Thanks for your video for my 3DR Solo.
There is an app that replace the tower app it's identical I don't see any differences I just can't remember what it's called he just need to look up 3dr solo on the Android market and Skip through the apps that are available for it

Gregory Hall it will definitely require hooking it to the software program for tuning the gimbal. After you're done installing and get everything working then you need to tune it with whatever the program the board runs on while hooked to your PC

I have all these components minus the ribbon cable laying around already, and another lightweight black gimbal on the way, had plans to install one of these cheap ebay gimbals on my solo as the genuine ones are ridiculously priced, good video very helpful on the process Dan 👍
When you spoke about adding weight for the camera on the black solo, you said adding pennies. What about using stick on wheel weights that are used for wheel balancing? They are small and rectangle shaped. And may look better. Just a thought. Thank you for your channel. If you have the latest version of open solo the parameter line has changed. You will be looking for "servo6_function" and changing that to rc_passthru.
Jow Worship, i removed the whole accessory bay module from the solo after wires come off both sides of the main circuit board. That cant be causing any problem right? Thnx bro!

Hey brother I am leagues beyond this video I only made this to show people that the solo is not a proprietary bird. I have five solo all of them are absolutely Decked Out some of them even have retractable legs. You will never get panning ability left or right because the solo does not have the option to do so only up or down however there is no need to pan left or right because all you have to do is yaw left or yaw right with the fuselage. It doesn't matter what gimbal you use as long as it has a PMW board. Preference I would choose Tarrot gimbal any day. If you choose one of these cheap gimbals then you would tune it with the B2C program

Ive had my solo for almost a year now. Love it. 2 of my friends also bought one after seeing mine. 😃 No problems for me got 5500 in city with jus a 9dbi 18 inch long and a alfa antenna.. pretty nice. Keep the videos and updates coming you really helping us out.

@@Yokozunastyle any third-party PMW driven gimbal should work whether it's 2 axi or 3 axi 👍 it has to be PMW driven if it's not it won't work with the solo that is the only stipulation

I did a similar mod, using the Iris + gimbal, which I have a couple of,,, but being that the solo range kinda sucks,, I just used a transmitter and a a receiver diversity screen and problem solved for range,,,good info though,, however I think thats a lot of work considering you can buy a quad copter like the Yuneec Q500 with an outstanding gimbal and camera for about 300 bucks wihich is about the price of the solo factory gimbal,,,,,lol but I suppose if you have a solo and like to tinker its a good idea, now will that work with autonomous flying when you program a way point etc to have the camera move to the object?
I'm not sure what limited range you're referring to I've had my solo out miles away you just have to properly understand patch antennas and Wi-Fi interference to understand how to gain the best range out of the solo
The q500 is not a good drone I have already had it it is bulky under-sized Motors and underpowered it can't handle anything over 7 mile per hour winds without having a very rough Landing trust me brother I've been doing this for quite some time I have dabbled with just about every drone on the market I have my favorites that 3dr solo is an incredible drone being that it's open source and it runs the most sophisticated software on the market to date which would be site scan you should probably look back into the 3dr solo a lot of stuff has changed and there are tons of new mods available for it thanks to a wonderful Facebook community of people like me and the open solo crew
You can do just about anything with 3dr solo targeting using solex app and on top of that did you know the top speed of the 3dr solo is 92 miles per hour in sport mode we drag race are solos they are absolute Insanity to watch them rip through the sky

The q500 is an extremely heavy drone and the aim for the market was real estate which is why I came with the Steadicam so people could walk through the houses it was not meant to go very far or have much range at all very simple video and photography do not get me wrong the cgo3 camera is pretty good and so is the gimbal however they attached it to a bird that was mediocre. For being a drone of its size and having such large props I will never understand why they gave it in 11.1 volt battery instead of a 14.8 volt battery. Compared to the 3dr solo it is a toy for basic users or beginner Pilots. As for your dislike I could really give a s*** less I don't care what anyone's personal opinion is I never have lol I'm still going to make my videos regardless obviously some of these companies see some potential in me or they wouldn't be sending me thousand-dollar products to play with for free... I am a compendium of knowledge and honestly the way you're talkin tells me that you're basically a noob that has had a few hobby grade drones that really does not do much background research to understand the functionality or specifications of these birds. When you start writing linux-based software and you can actually start producing your own open source coding come talk to me until then you're a noob with no credentials to offer.
Correct me if I'm wrong but that would work using mission planner to I think. The backend of all of these apps is based on the mission planner or mavlink communication protocol. My experience is more diy using the pixhawk but the solo has a pixhawk 2 afaik

I have just purchased a used Solo with a gopro hero 3+. Would a Nexus 7 2013 2nd gen work ok with the apps i will be using.? Funds are limited so have to try to make do with what I have. What tablet do you suggest? Thanks. Love the channel.
I don't use a tablet I use my phone I always buy phones with big screens but the tablet you have chosen should work well as long as it's a quad-core processor with at least 2 gigs of RAM
@@savedbygrace5943 you have purchased a drone that has become more of a DIY project now than anything unfortunately the batteries are not being produced anymore and the only batteries that are out for this drone currently are from 2015 and they are starting to fail we are working on the problem and we have come up with a few Solutions but you will have to purchase and build your own battery. The old batteries get very limited flight times and are very prone to failure at this point so be careful how hard you fly your solo

Yes 50 dollars is a cheap setup but it seems to be a step backwards. For 70 bucks shipped you can purchase a Storm32 based 3d gimbal with mavlink? That is the recommended setup directly from the mouths of the 3DR engineers. xevets I think you missed the point of this video all together like a bunch of other people they ideas to show people that there are gimbal options... We know that you can purchase all the other gimbals this is just a video showing how you can install and how different gimbals work. The idea was to show people they don't have to purchase an overpriced$290 $400 gimbal from somebody on eBay because there are options available
I have a question. The one that you show on the video have the rotor on the left side allowing the hdmi cable been conected on the right side. But, the one on the link have the rotor on the right side not allowing the hdmi been convected. Wich one I shoul buy ? Btw I have a gopro hero 3

My suggestion in 2018 is not to get the solo it has become a DIY platform only people who are willing to modify solder and Tinker should purchase the solo today

really it would be nice to mount a higher quality gimbal. plenty about by the likes of feiyu tech or tarrot. No point going cheap if it doesnt get high quality footage
Okay I think you're missing the point of this video. The first thing we're showing is that it is possible to install 3rd party because everyone's been losing their mind about not being able to get a plug-and-play system that's affordable anymore. Secondly with proper tuning even a $37 gimbal works just fine especially if using it with a camera that has decent stabilization features aka EIS. And yes the option to use Tarrot is available to all users but this was designed for the basic user who can't afford a $250 gimbal or does not have the skills or the means to install any kind of crazy setup. Aren't opinions great 😉

You need to make sure that the gimbal you choose is PMW operated and then make sure you have your Channel wire plugged into the correct pin on the gimbal
@@IFixShet Hi, i did all i can but the gimbal still not recognized by the transmitter, i think my gimbal pin connector (for the wire comes from pin 14) is in the opposite side of the one you show in this video.

tony perks they do not function like the Solo solo is a jack of all trades you call that work I call it awesome. It's 2015 in the solo is still adapting to all new technology out there I would say that being an open-source platform is what makes it the coolest thing on the planet it's a drone that you would never have to purchase another UAV because it could just adapt itself to all technology coming out. Learn the solo love the solo be one with the solo
tony perks heck I can even run thermal Flir 3 axis you camera for two hundred bucks on the solo. And I used a 2d gimbal because it was cheap and I wanted to show people it is possible to adapt third-party systems to the solo because it's open source. Come on brother if you don't own one of these things yet you have no idea what you're missing out on

rc man I don't really see this as a big job this is a fairly simple job honestly but it will allow you to run any HDMI camera on the solo

I don't use a tablet I use my phone I always buy phones with big screens but the tablet you have chosen should work well as long as it's a quad-core processor with at least 2 gigs of RAM

@@savedbygrace5943 you have purchased a drone that has become more of a DIY project now than anything unfortunately the batteries are not being produced anymore and the only batteries that are out for this drone currently are from 2015 and they are starting to fail we are working on the problem and we have come up with a few Solutions but you will have to purchase and build your own battery. The old batteries get very limited flight times and are very prone to failure at this point so be careful how hard you fly your solo
I plan on getting the Solex app as soon as I can so I just wanted to,make sure it would work with it. Thanks again.

Yes 50 dollars is a cheap setup but it seems to be a step backwards. For 70 bucks shipped you can purchase a Storm32 based 3d gimbal with mavlink? That is the recommended setup directly from the mouths of the 3DR engineers.

xevets I think you missed the point of this video all together like a bunch of other people they ideas to show people that there are gimbal options... We know that you can purchase all the other gimbals this is just a video showing how you can install and how different gimbals work. The idea was to show people they don't have to purchase an overpriced$290 $400 gimbal from somebody on eBay because there are options available

I have a question. The one that you show on the video have the rotor on the left side allowing the hdmi cable been conected on the right side. But, the one on the link have the rotor on the right side not allowing the hdmi been convected. Wich one I shoul buy ? Btw I have a gopro hero 3

really it would be nice to mount a higher quality gimbal. plenty about by the likes of feiyu tech or tarrot. No point going cheap if it doesnt get high quality footage
Okay I think you're missing the point of this video. The first thing we're showing is that it is possible to install 3rd party because everyone's been losing their mind about not being able to get a plug-and-play system that's affordable anymore. Secondly with proper tuning even a $37 gimbal works just fine especially if using it with a camera that has decent stabilization features aka EIS. And yes the option to use Tarrot is available to all users but this was designed for the basic user who can't afford a $250 gimbal or does not have the skills or the means to install any kind of crazy setup. Aren't opinions great 😉
PlaneCrazy one last thing this setup also allows you to run GoPro Hero 5 and GoPro Hero 6 with fpv 😉 not as bad as you were thinking anymore?

Hi i did the same thing get an issue, the transmitter/Drone didn't recognize the gimbal, how can i fix it? thx congrats for the nice video.
You need to make sure that the gimbal you choose is PMW operated and then make sure you have your Channel wire plugged into the correct pin on the gimbal

@@IFixShet Hi, i did all i can but the gimbal still not recognized by the transmitter, i think my gimbal pin connector (for the wire comes from pin 14) is in the opposite side of the one you show in this video.
@@housspin1 are you positive it's a PMW driven gimbal just because the link is still up does not mean they're selling the same gimbal when I originally posted it

tony perks they do not function like the Solo solo is a jack of all trades you call that work I call it awesome. It's 2015 in the solo is still adapting to all new technology out there I would say that being an open-source platform is what makes it the coolest thing on the planet it's a drone that you would never have to purchase another UAV because it could just adapt itself to all technology coming out. Learn the solo love the solo be one with the solo
tony perks heck I can even run thermal Flir 3 axis you camera for two hundred bucks on the solo. And I used a 2d gimbal because it was cheap and I wanted to show people it is possible to adapt third-party systems to the solo because it's open source. Come on brother if you don't own one of these things yet you have no idea what you're missing out on
