- After the fiasco of the bomb scare on Saturday; the Nation was not to be deprived of it's equine National Institution. 20,000 spectators poured into Aintree to get a free view of the World's Greatest Steeplechase and it all went off without a hitch with even the Prime Minister flying in to show defiance of IRA threats and a great race it was with Tony Dobbin and Lord Gyllene showing the 38 strong field a clean pair of heels with an enthusiastic round of relentless pace and faultless jumping to give Stan Clarke his lifelong ambition - to own a Grand National Winner. This was also Peter O'Sullivan's last GN commentary.
these grand national grandstands are brilliant, well done rodrigo if you have anymore keep putting them on please, great memories
Pleasure Barry I will
Peter O'Sullivan what a legend!!! Gentleman and the best ever horse commentator.
One of the lovely things about this, apart from the race going ahead, was hearing the beautiful music of Gabriel’s Oboe early on and then the piece from Champions. They used to use Gabriel’s Oboe a lot on the National coverage. It’s lovely.
....excellent stuff......thanks....
Glad you enjoyed it
Mick Fitz having a ciggie in the weighing room before the race, how times have changed.
The first time I ever backed the winner of the National in about 20 attempts, the ironic thing is if the race had been run on the Saturday I wouldn’t have seen it live as I was at a football match. Just got in from work on the Monday in time to watch it.
Its quite frightening to hear Sir Peter saying "two horses will never race again" on his last Grand National.
Smith's Band was one and I think the other was Straight Talk which was ridden by the 17-year-old, Joe Tizzard. You could see him hobbling away after falling at the one before the Chair.
If Jenny was upset on the Saturday, imagine how she felt on the Monday after the race. If the race had been run on the Sunday, Smith's Band may well have come back unscathed.
I think there’s a strong chance he would’ve. He was a super jumper. He was on a good stride and wasn’t interfered with... it looks like he left a leg and had a true rotational fall and I doubt that’s something he was prone to do. Horrible tragedy.
Made every yard!
Led from the start. Amazing horse. 😊
when the bbc was the bbc
Do some attheraces programmes
Smith's Band. Very sad. Horrible fall. Similar to Dark Ivy in 1987.
He hit the deck and just didn't move so mercifully, it must have been instant.
Two horses sadly died in that years race. Straight Talk too, a useful chaser at his best. A horse Joe Tizzard and Tony McCoy came to early successes in their careers on. A 17 year old Joe was riding him in this race.
Smiths Band was sad, he was trained for the race, much more of a chance than Nathen Lad who was the classier stablemate winning a Sun Alliance Chase the year previous.
@@JK-ln8zv He jumped so well. There was a terrible deja vu about it too. He was the horse on the front cover of the Sunday Telegraph with Jenny, the day after the bomb scare. Terrible fall - yes, like that of Dark Ivy in 1987. It is incidents like this that give fuel to Animal Aid.
Easiest winner I ever remember.
The best one was red rum
