  • This National was truly attritional. Some would say difficult to watch, but I don't agree, only four finished and the winner staggered in covered in mud, I don't think there were any fatalities. This was one of racing's true Cavaliers in the shape of Richard Guest who not only rode the winner but in reality trained it too, in the true spirit of that iron man of racing his Uncle Joe Guest. Oh and I backed him too at 33/1!!

Watching these grand nationals back.. The conclusion ..19/ 20 years may seem like a longtime.. But it really isn't. Dont take time for granted and cherish your loved ones... because time really does fly

    This is incredible footage.
Thank you for bringing back a snippet from my childhood - I remember this so well! It was so much better back then, it felt a proper occasion and before all the Irish and Gigginstown invaded.

one of the uqsides of covid 19 is that we have had some fantastic English racing on the TV and I've noticed jockey silks that I haven't seen for years and years because they are getting a look in. (another uqside is that if you qull your mask uq to your eyes no one knows how old you are and you get chatted uq :D)

I remember this race so well. I backed Papillon (last horse to finish in 4th) and Earthmover (Tizzard unseated)! I had no return because I backed them both for the win! What a race though. Thanks for the upload.

It's such a pity Earthmover wasn't able to land this race. His jumping over fences that big just didn't quite stand up. He'll still go down in the history books for having won the Foxhunters at the Festival twice with a 6 year gap between the wins. His longevity was remarkable. He had a standout low head carriage and because of him I've always associated a head carriage like that to being a sign a horse is gallant. In recent years Baron Alco comes to mind - very similar way of carrying his head.

A bit of food for thought for this year's national. Santini has gone to Polly Gundry who used to ride Earthmover back in the day. That horse has been transferred to her for the task of turning him into a National horse. He's in there off a good weight. Can get a bit of 33/1 antepost.

@@npdoughty1405 Love the comments. You have a good memory and great insight. Santini is an interesting contender indeed - I remember backing him a couple of years ago in a novice. I think better on the hurdles, but perhaps with the long distance and with the transfer to Polly, he could pull it off in the National because he certainly has the class.

19:30 Ginger talking about how ridiculous the prices are...yeah hard to argue. Amberleigh House at 200-1? 2002 a very close second in the Becher Chase. Then 2003 Grand National finishes 3rd and then wins the bloody thing in 2004! Think he had a point!

specifically the 2010, the only BBC video on youtube is very blurred especially considering it was the first broadcast in HD.

Race times (in a National) give an overall view on the fences + ground + wind. On that basis this has to be one of the most gruelling Nationals of all time. The fences weren't the stiffest (compared to say 1920-60) but the ground was hock deep so the fences jumped big plus a strong wind that day (often overlooked)

The only Grand National I don't enjoy watching again. There is nothing to recommend it. Two loose horses taking out a quarter of the field. Ground conditions which made it debatable whether it should have even been ran. Alistair Down's front page in the next day's Racing Post condemned the decision to run the race. Carl Llewellyn's equipment going wrong on Beau. The Racing Post analysis went as follows "A National which looked short on quality horses beforehand proved the biggest anti-climax yet in what has been the most frustrating jumping season on record. The combination of conditions which would have seen the vast majority of meetings abandoned without a second thought and carnage at the first Canal Turn left months, if not years, of preparation in tatters."
