I was there ! my pub won a carlsberg competition to send a bus full of staff and customers to the National , all expenses paid , didnt see a single race and ended up sleeping in a school , what a nightmare !
Security stopped me and my mate from leaving with our pints. They said we can't take glasses out onto the course. So we put our glasses down and grabbed a bottle of untouched champagne each off the nearest table and the security said fine, you can take those. We guzzled that champagne like lottery winners as we left the course and headed into town.
You always have to wonder would Smiths Band and Straight talk have suffered fatal falls that day. Must have been heart wrenching for connections of both horses
Thanks for the uploads, takes you back when you watch it all from start to finish. Here comes the inevitable request. Do you have any of the recent Tophams or Foxhunters?
She had a lot more to be sad about come Monday when she lost her lovely free jumping horse Smiths Band at the 22nd.How ironic that his lovely head was all over the Sunday papers taken when she went to see the horses in the stables. He took a ghastly fall and we all knew he was dead when he hit the ground. Quite horrible and something none of us wants to see at Aintree.
Pitman is so matter of fact when we see the stands are being evacuated, as if someone else on the channel has already mentioned something! He barely even mentions it at first. 'Suny Bay won't know what's going on around the racecourse', eh? What are you driving at Richard?
An observation: the connections with jump racing are so knowledgeable.about horses generally , they are not all multi milllionares and they seem to really love the horses and what they do. Charlie Brookes' 'methods are excellent, Suny Bay looks so bonny for being at grass during the day. The flat cousins are totally different; they see horses as a business and mostly only race for breeding.Coolmore, Godolphin and of course Juddmont to name the big three. Billionaires all, surrounded by minders and some, not all, unpleasant and full of themselves.. Well done the BBC for this excellent presentation.Great days of racing. Desmond Lynman so missed.!! The Grand National should never have been lost to them. Ginger mentioned Lord Gylene - knew it! How lovely to see A very young Joe Tizzard, tragic he lost his sister in 2020.
Really?!!! and just suppose the coded warnings weren't adhered to and the bomb scare had become reality, the death count may have been horrific!!! Public (and in this case, animal) safety comes first when you're dealing with terrorism or even the threat of it my uneducated friend.
'What sort of a day am I having here?' asks Des at 1:39:25 ... It's about to get a lot worse, mate.

I was there did we receive the generous hospitality of the scousers no we didn’t it’s a myth you had to be wearing silks

Coming from Singapore to watch the race, then told to leave the course. How gutting!

No, sorry
Your heart broke for Jenny Pitman that day.

And john white.
Why John White? That was 1993
....mixed emotion seeing this again....but good work again....thanks...
Great upload as usual. fascinating to see this unfold in full and unedited (more or less unedited ;) )
More to come!

2:17:48 When Angus stumbled on his words not once, but twice, this must've been the moment the director told him and Des that the alarm went off.
That's Peter Scudamore, alongside Richard Pitman next to the parade ring. To be fair, he was well known for his often tongue-tied delivery
Does anyone know the name of the piece of music at 2:09hrs? They used it every year for a while. I love it ... so bad it’s good
Is it champions by Carl Davis?
Josef Strauss - jockey fast polka

How’d the commentators know that it was a bomb warning.
Totally unnecessary They should’ve gone ahead upsetting everyone like that that was there for a lovely day out was not right
Completely overreaction
