I was 10 years old in 1977. I was suffering a miserable childhood. Red Rum was my hero & saviour. I'm now 56, and I still have to watch this race every year, on Grand National day. From the moment Peter O'Sullevan's voice breaks when Churchtown Boy stumbles at the 2nd last fence, the tears start flowing...I will watch the race later today, but it will never be the same. Thank you, Rummy, for all the memories, they will live with me forever xxx
I am in no way a horse racing fan, but my god, for a brief period in my life, Red Rum made me one, because of his extraordinary and legendary achievements which will never be beaten. What I think is most astonishing of all about that horse was that he just made it look so easy, for what is by far, the toughest horse race in the world, and at a time when the fences were at their highest and toughest. His finish to win his third Grand National always has and always will stay with me, because it really was a miracle. What an astonishing horse, who is much missed. I remember shedding a tear when I heard of his passing, but boy he deserves his well earned rest. RIP Red Rum and thank you.
It's amazing that over 40 years on and we're still talking about the greatest horse that ever graced the Grand National. Still get goose bumps every time I watch this...
I can remember watching this as a Kid. (It was quite the tradition in our House& ironic because my 'Ol Man' was a obsessed ' Mick' from Ireland ☘️ for 'Flat Racing' so he never really liked this Race) And it was the only 'Race' we liked. But yrs later watching one of 'Pegasus' Sons the Legendary 'Red Rum' giving his usual 'Master Class' (1973,Win,1974,Win,1975,Second,1976,Second)at Aintree still sends Shivers down my spine& I have to admit brings a tear to my eye ( Our House of 8 kids& Warring Parents, wasn't exactly Filled with harmony, but watching this Equine LEGEND certainly helped) And u can never run out of Superlatives to describe this Champion Wonder Horse ☘️👍
5 Grand Nationals and only 2 horses ever finished ahead of him. One was L’escargot who had also just won the Cheltenham Gold cup, so a top top horse and the other was Rag Trade who Red Rum was narrowly beaten by. Other than them, he beat every other horse in 5 races. Astounding achievement. There will never be one like it again in the Grand National
And Red Rum was bred to win a flat race (and dead heated with his former stable companion in a flat race at Livepool). But he won the world's longest jumps race.

Absolutely agreed, even if a flustered and confused Peter did manage to omit that Boom Docker, 30 odd lengths ahead refused to jump. Though i think he got a bit muddled up on his pass over commentary to John Hamner.

Great memories watching this Andy Pandy , Brown Admiral, Churchtown Boy , The Philgarlck and of course Red Rum what an amazing horse . Great to hear the old commentators too very emotional to watch. Great days .
Remember this National very well as I had wad of cash on Red Rum to win which was a £1,it was a lot for a 14 yr old back in 77.Memories of by gone age.
For me, the best weight carrying performance of a horse ever, including arkle, rummy won this easy and was 12 at the time with 12st on his back. I remember this because I had all my pocket money on him and it paid for the whole family to see jaws at the odeon in Liverpool. Great memories.
@@Eleventhearlofmars Nice response mate. In terms of the Grand National I reckon Crisp giving 23 pounds to a younger red Rum and nearly beating him is the greatest weight carrying achievement. Crisp was such a superbly charismatic horse who jumped like a stag and had the class to win at Cheltenham.
i was a kid back then....i STILL ADORE this horse like LOTS of others. back then people would be huddled outside tv shops on a sat afternoon, the atmosphere was GREAT and UPBEAT. its a people,s race etc. every tom dick and harry loved it back then.
I don't care the era or opposition, it is what it was at the time, what a performance off top weight. They might be classier in the national today but none with a bigger heart than this horse. The 3 wins and 2 seconds will hardly be matched.
I was in my teens and saving up to do my nursing course. Had a bet, as my mate Di told me to. Kept the faith, with that lovely horse and cried, when he won, again. Over those five years, won £220. Thanks Red Rum :))
Watched this on the tv in 1977 at The London Hospital Whitechapel London when my brother was in with a badly broken leg. Rummey was always a favourite despite coming 2nd in the previous 2 races. He was the people’s horse !!
A quite remarkable horse: to jump 150 fences, run some 22 and half miles, never fall, rarely falter and carry heavy weights . I witnessed all this and am so glad I did. I truly believe we will never see his like again. Good horses will come and go, occasionally great horses will come and go but there will never ever be one of the calibre of Red Rum. His story is all the more poignant if you consider his quite dreadful history of inept trainers, bad jockeys and pedal bone ossification. Rummy - simply the best .
You said it. To have 3 wins and two seconds in a race where only about 1/3 of the horses finish is incredible. To have raced a hundred times and managed to stay on his feet in all of them is mind boggling. WHAT A HORSE! Feel bad for the horse that fell at fence 6 and looked like it had a spinal injury. They must have had to hustle to get him off the course before the second lap. Red Rum’s trainer disapproved of the changes they made since Tummy’s time to make the course safer . Decreasing the drop after the fence at Becher’s and making some fences smaller. The trainer predicted it would make riders more reckless and the statistics seem to support his position. Kind of like frangible pins in eventing. Designers make trappier combinations because they figure it’ll give way if someone misses (the one study done showed they frequently don’t) and riders think the same thing. Pesky unintended consequences.
I was 10 and had all my pocket money on him at 16/1 if memory serves lol, the winnings ( minus my pocket money stake back) were used to take the family to see jaws at the Liverpool odeon cinema😃
No other horse since Rummy has won the race twice, he will always be the greatest National horse ever. I had the honour of meeting him twice, he knew he was a star
Only time my Dad put a bet on was this race.......he won. Decided to quit while he was ahead!! He died 3 months later. Still brings a lump to the throat.
When asked the best day of their life , some say "The birth of my first child" , I'm afraid that doesn't come close , this is pure gold even 43 years later
In our house that day, I'd backed Red Rum. My older brother picked Churchtown Boy. My mum had Eyecatcher, and my dad done The Pilgarlic. Even my younger sister picked out Happy Ranger which finished 7th. My dad had put the bets on that morning and staked around £5 with mostly 50p each-way bets. As I had the winner, I pocketed over six quid and all the others got their each-way up. I remember the huge chippy tea we all had that night, covered by a bit of our winnings.
@@jonlahive330 Ha, yeah, imagine that. A £5 straight tri-cast. We could have bought a 4-bed detached house with the winnings. I remember some being built near us and were going for £4,950.
What Tiger Roll has achieved in winning two Grand Nationals is fantastic but what Red Rum did was unbelievable because it was a far more difficult Grand National back then
Aintree's modern-day course would be a walk in the park for yesterday's steeplechasing stars, the greatest, Red Rum, in particular! No horse will ever equal his magnificent record - forever the king of Aintree and true legend!
and andy pandy has gone round bechers, looks like some jockey at 1st bechers has a little cut, theres a huge tent there and andy pandy wins the national and rummys 2nd for the 3rd time,
Red rums achievements will never be equalled by any horse. The course was much more demanding back then they have made a lot of fences smaller with landing sides levelled off. Never the less all horses and jockeys who tackle the course I wish them well and hope they all come back safe win lose or draw👍
I was born a couple of months after this race, i recall the commentators voices as a kid, brought back some memories as my dad always had the racing on. What an incredible horse 🐎
I was 9 years old when watching this race,I had my 25pence pocket money on rummy,my dad took my bet cause he said rummy had no chance being top weight and 12 years old!!!.he even gave me 10-1,he was gutted to have give me 2-50..ha.ha.ha..RIP tummy and my dad!!!
I believe Boom Docker recovered form after being put on a Milk diet, no joke, I had backed him the previous year, Milk had done its trick on its warm up race but 4 miles was beyond it,. I 'made' my wife and kids back Red Rum in 1977.
I backed Red Rum I was 7. I think I had 10p each way on him. My Dad put the money on top of the telly. I think I got £1.07 back after tax. Fortunately it didn't turn me into a gambler. I spent the next 2 weeks re-enacting the race running round the garden. @@petergoddard262

great commentator indeed but how on Earth did REDRUM do what he did is beyond me, absolutely amazingly incredible, I think the only horse that comes close to REDRUM after all these many many years is Tiger Roll
@@alitob5911 - he wasn't perfect at the first fence on the second circuit (17th) Boom Rocker refused, and O'Sullivan had a "senior moment" verbally fumbling.
I worked with a man who was a big racing fan, he only used to really bet on flat races (He said that there were enough things to think about without fences if your money was on a horse.) But he went to Aintree every year. He told me two things about that race and Red Rum. He said that year was the only time he saw the track bookies take a real hammering. Everyone was betting heavy on what they fancied to win but also putting a side bet on Red Rum, so if they had £50 on Curchtown Boy they put £20 on Red rum if £500 on another horse £100 on Red Rum. He said that virtually no one there that day had no money on Red Rum to win, just because they wanted him to. The other thing that he said was. "If the National was run over 6 miles over those fences, that horse would have won all 5." Some horse. A British sporting hero.
Takes me back to being a kid watching the national with my racing mad dad, Rummy quite literally a National treasure. Back when the national was so dangerous and Beachers Brook a name that would strike fear into anyone that knew a thing about Aintree. The only other one that gets me like this is Aldaniti and what a film Champions was, accompanied by the greatest racing anthem ever. Great days and miss all the horses we have lost in NH over years. Go Aldaniti Go.
Brian fletcher always said his greatest achievement was winning the Scottish grand national and the English grand national in the same year when he still rode red rum .He then come in 3rd on eye catcher in the same race when Tommy won on red rum
The size of the fences then to the last few runnings. The difference is undeniable. This horse is a legend and regardless if any other horse wins the National 3 times, it will never equal Red Rums weight carrying and jumping ability.

Remember watching this as a child and my dad had let us bet 50p on Red rum, brought tears to my eyes watching it again. When you see now how high those fences were leaves you in awe at the heart of that horse.
kevin coleman great post.
Simply brilliant .
Beautiful, just beautiful
For me, the best weight carrying performance of a horse ever, including arkle, rummy won this easy and was 12 at the time with 12st on his back. I remember this because I had all my pocket money on him and it paid for the whole family to see jaws at the odeon in Liverpool. Great memories.
You know nothing it was a poor horse in a handicap way below arkle or any gold cup winner
I bow to your superior knowledge
@@Eleventhearlofmars Nice response mate. In terms of the Grand National I reckon Crisp giving 23 pounds to a younger red Rum and nearly beating him is the greatest weight carrying achievement. Crisp was such a superbly charismatic horse who jumped like a stag and had the class to win at Cheltenham.
You've never heard a roar like it. R.i.p rummy. History
Darrell Heath HISTORY WITH LOVING TEARS!!!!!!!
Darrell Heath god bless ya.have a charmed life!!!!!🐎
i was a kid back then....i STILL ADORE this horse like LOTS of others. back then people would be huddled outside tv shops on a sat afternoon, the atmosphere was GREAT and UPBEAT. its a people,s race etc. every tom dick and harry loved it back then.
Darrell Heath hair tands on end!!.
The only horse to be booked to open supermarkets. What a star!
One of the greatest sports moments of all time, a accompanied by one of the greatest commentaries of all time
I don't care the era or opposition, it is what it was at the time, what a performance off top weight. They might be classier in the national today but none with a bigger heart than this horse. The 3 wins and 2 seconds will hardly be matched.
Red Rum, you were beautiful.
You still are................................................................
Always and forever xx
This gave me goosebumps watching 44 years later
I was in my teens and saving up to do my nursing course. Had a bet, as my mate Di told me to. Kept the faith, with that lovely horse and cried, when he won, again. Over those five years, won £220. Thanks Red Rum :))
Red rum the housewives favourite.the bookies nightmare.i get very tearful after all these years.the national.with the magic horse red rum.god bless .
Watched this on the tv in 1977 at The London Hospital Whitechapel London when my brother was in with a badly broken leg. Rummey was always a favourite despite coming 2nd in the previous 2 races. He was the people’s horse !!
That gave me goose pimples watching that...the greatest horse ever!!!!!!!!!
Over the National course yes, no doubt about that.
Amazing looking back at these great times I was 6 years old in 73
It still sickens me to see such beautiful creatures fall and die where they lay. I don’t watch any jump racing any more, 50 years!!
1977 I was in trafalger sq bookies . Backed andy pandy but all you could here was Red rum Red rum. Happy days
Now he was a legend.
I can't add anything to that. You have said it all. :-)
Red Rum knew he was at Aintree, he loved the crowd and the atmosphere.
Bperenagadwsawtww
And the first race he ever won was a 5 furlong sprint as a 2 yo..
Thank you for uploading this - this was the day after I was born. One of my favourite finishing commentaries.
i was only 5month old x
Ah! Older than me :) x
I was 10 and had all my pocket money on him at 16/1 if memory serves lol, the winnings ( minus my pocket money stake back) were used to take the family to see jaws at the Liverpool odeon cinema😃
I was born April 77. Lol.
Greatest ever!
No other horse since Rummy has won the race twice, he will always be the greatest National horse ever. I had the honour of meeting him twice, he knew he was a star
OldiesAl actually he won it 3 times!!73, 74, , 77.
horse racing icon, quite simply the best of all time.rip big fella
Yes I know he did, this was his 3rd win, what I said was no other horse since him has won it twice.
@@OldiesAl people can't read but can act clever !
OldiesAl nice!! Yea he knew he was magical!! God i wish i had met red rum.a pat .gosh.
Only time my Dad put a bet on was this race.......he won. Decided to quit while he was ahead!! He died 3 months later. Still brings a lump to the throat.
3 months after the race ? sorry to hear about that mate
@@Mulberry2000 Thankyou.
Omg that's sad but maybe your dad knew he would win again magnificent memories sorry about your dad
Still the best piece of live sporting commentary in history.
Michael Muldowney agreed!!!.dream race this was!!!!!
Fairytale. That's what's makes racing great..that and Frankel and hurricane fly..superstars.
3 grand national wins & 2 runners up..phenomenal achievement by Red Rum
A true true champion and missed by all
@@leeandrews2473 Missed, but forever in our hearts and always an inspiration xx
Why do I still get goose pimples? I've known the result for 47 years!
Looking at the odds 9/1 20/1 18/1 ...you could have bought the chip shop if the money had gone on the family tricast!!
@@jonlahive330 Ha, yeah, imagine that. A £5 straight tri-cast. We could have bought a 4-bed detached house with the winnings. I remember some being built near us and were going for £4,950.
What Tiger Roll has achieved in winning two Grand Nationals is fantastic but what Red Rum did was unbelievable because it was a far more difficult Grand National back then
Very true.think rummy would skip over the fences of today
Better quality fields too when Rummy won, real high end chasers. it’s not comparable at all.
I never saw a better Steeplechaser in my 54 years than Rummy
Hes the greatest Rummy RIP
The roar of the crowd when he jumped the last!
There can never be another Red Rum because the course has so fundamentally changed from his day
1964karlos so true they have taken the challenge out of the course
......Good old Rummy...what a legend.....thanks for the upload....and great quality vid....
your welcome x
if they ran this race today you would have had sebastian and andy pandy fighting out the finish, boomdocker an exausted 3rd and rummy about 15th
...Sage Merlin might have been up there too...
Aintree's modern-day course would be a walk in the park for yesterday's steeplechasing stars, the greatest, Red Rum, in particular! No horse will ever equal his magnificent record - forever the king of Aintree and true legend!
and andy pandy has gone round bechers, looks like some jockey at 1st bechers has a little cut, theres a huge tent there and andy pandy wins the national and rummys 2nd for the 3rd time,
Unforgettable! RIP Rummy. ❤️
Was born in '07. I am 44 years late to this race but I got goosebumps.
What a gutsy horse!
I cry buckets every time I watch this what a horse and that race was hard in those days red rum an absolute legend a moment in sporting history
Rummy captured so many hearts 💓💓 ( he was still full of running at the finish )
Red rums achievements will never be equalled by any horse. The course was much more demanding back then they have made a lot of fences smaller with landing sides levelled off. Never the less all horses and jockeys who tackle the course I wish them well and hope they all come back safe win lose or draw👍
I was born a couple of months after this race, i recall the commentators voices as a kid, brought back some memories as my dad always had the racing on. What an incredible horse 🐎
Aintree legend Rummy,he had it all.RIP
I was 9 years old when watching this race,I had my 25pence pocket money on rummy,my dad took my bet cause he said rummy had no chance being top weight and 12 years old!!!.he even gave me 10-1,he was gutted to have give me 2-50..ha.ha.ha..RIP tummy and my dad!!!
Never even used the whip....legend of a horse xx
Shivers down my spine
Mine too - and tears!
1977 i was 12 yrs old and had a 50p each way bet on Red Rum ! i was straight down to the toy shop that afternoon!!
About £8 i think,not bad in the 70s
The names are so familiar......Boom Docker, Sage Merlin, Churchtown Boy. But from forty years on it's like watching a story from the age of myth.
I backed Churchtown Boy in this race.

Rich LN well written!!!
@@Gervase1970 beautiful memories
It’s 45 years ago but still makes the hairs on my neck stand up .
R.I.P. John Hanmer, vastly underrated commentator, never got flustered even when commentating on the greatest race of all every year.
The greatest horses of them all. And the commentary from sr Peter O Sullivan never to be repeated
Sir Peter O'Sullevan CBE .more than a commentator. It was like hearing poetry being read.
Totally agree. Always worth watching and listening for inspiration. Every word perfect. "...and he's coming up to the line to win it like a fresh horse in great style... it's hats off and a tremendous reception, you've never heard one like it at Liverpool... Red Rum wins the National..."
great commentator indeed but how on Earth did REDRUM do what he did is beyond me, absolutely amazingly incredible, I think the only horse that comes close to REDRUM after all these many many years is Tiger Roll
@@alitob5911 - he wasn't perfect at the first fence on the second circuit (17th) Boom Rocker refused, and O'Sullivan had a "senior moment" verbally fumbling.
@@David.L291 tiger roll won 2 overlong stayers races you cant compare him to red rum
@@David.L291 think red rum would probably skip over the jumps these days
Love the crowds reaction when rummy jumped the last fence, you can tell they all wanted him to win.
"If the National was run over 6 miles over those fences, that horse would have won all 5."
Some horse. A British sporting hero.
Rummy at his best, and total legend 😊
Love how he flicks his ears up on line
Sporting icon the great Rummy RIP
What a horse 🐴 red rum was three wins two runners up never happen again what a legend of a horse magnificent trainer as well 😊
