Quick Tip: The Awesome “Windy” for Aviation Weather

- You might ask “Why is Windy so popular?”, or maybe “What the heck is Windy?”. After using Windy for the past several years and over a thousand flight hours as my primary tool for mid- and short-range weather planning, I thought I’d document in both paper and video form how to get a jump start into using Windy. With how fast this software has evolved as both a website and app, I believe you’ll be hard pressed to match the breadth of the weather datasets, the choice of worldwide data sources (European, NOAA, Meteoblue), cutting edge graphics, and a compact user interface… oh, and it’s FREE. Have you tried Windy? Lately? What do you like best about the product, and what new aviation magic would you like to see from Windy.
Thanks for your insight and enjoy the flight!

Like these quick tips you're doing. Yes, windy is a fabulous resource. I learned a few "quick tips" here. Thx
Thanks, Bryan. Take care. Wayne
This is what I have found to be the most useful tool for weather, although other information such as the skew-T is valuable.
Couldn't agree more! Thanks for watching. Wayne (DA40 KSBA)
This might be one of the most informative aviation channels on UA-cam !
Paul, wow, I'm humbled. Thanks for watching and for the very kind words! Wayne (DA40 KSBA)
amazing content keep up the great content
I'm not a pilot, but found Windy and am hoping to use it to plan photography outings. This helped a lot in figuring out how to use the app. Thanks!
Galen, glad the video was useful. Enjoy Windy! Thanks for watching. Wayne
Love WINDY, it was my Go-To for winds in the Bahamas, as you know that don’t have METAR’s there!
Ron, as an incentive for your next trip... Puerto Rico broadcasts ADS-B weather and traffic and has coverage maybe 100 miles off their shores.

Not ready to go that far......YET!
nice video bro
Thanks
I downloaded the 7 day trail on my iPad ~ but can’t seem to find ( turn on ) those slider bars.
They were a great feature.
Hi... the Altitude slider on the iOS versions of Windy is under the main menu icon. The photos in the attached link will show you where. Thanks for watching. Wayne. photos.app.goo.gl/19DsqLRYZEg8z5ci9
Is the Windy meteogram different from the TAFs because it uses a different model?
Possibly, as Windy has the option to show any of 6 different models. I have it defaulting to the European model (ECMWF)
Where do you get the download of tips? This was great for aviators. Thank you!
Jennifer, glad you enjoyed the Windy video... it is an awesome tool for aviators. Thanks for watching! Wayne...

I don’t understand the difference between the waves, swell 1, swell 2 option, because they all show very different readings often. Can someone explain what the difference is?
Danny, sorry I can't help, as I'm just a fixed wing pilot. Hopefully some surfers will chime in. Or maybe go to the Windy.com site and pose the question... the founder of Windy is a kite-surfer.
Does windy show mountain waves?
Not to my knowledge.
All I want is the altitude slider, you use it straight up, it is there!!! I installed no slider. I searched Altitude, height, wind altitude, height slider, Altitude slider, swapped slider to bar, selector ETC. Uninstalled... but you have it how? I selected "Air" for activitie, If your flying isn't it obvious you want wind at altitude???
Display Wind… then to the lower right is an altitude slider. photos.app.goo.gl/35tti2zxF824wJE3A
