A few people mentioned the distance planner tool is only available to premium (paid) users of the Windy app. My bad, I didn't notice that. I do pay for a premium subscription to Windy mainly because it's an awesome product and I want to support the developers. But you can absolutely get loads of useful and accurate weather information from just the free version. But my apologies if that is confusing from the video. Thanks everyone who mentioned that 🙏 stef
Live ATC + Flight Radar - best entertainment while waiting for a flight, especially when conditions are bad and there's for example heavy snow at the airport :)
Good video. It's hard to get good recommendations that don't cost 500 bucks a year, offer more than minimal utility, and aren't designed for millionaires. Thanks for these!

Be very careful with an iPad on the flight deck. (Or any loose objects). A Chinook went down not so long back, when the pilot monitoring dropped an iPad down on to the anti-torque pedals. When pilot flying applied pedal input , the pedals jammed. The PM could not reach down to retrieve the iPad due their harness. It was all over in a few seconds. Fly safe - learn from the mistake of others; and not your own. Take care. Great channel Stefan.
Had to watch this with my notepad. Everything was valuable and reading from the comments as well. Thank you Stef for such amazing content. Much love from Nairobi, Kenya.
Great software tips. Request: I’d love you to do three separate UA-cam videos. Preflight, In-flight, and Post-flight. Each video from start to finish of that particular leg, what you do during that stage, including the tools you use and why. I think that would be helpful for me. As I’ve spoken with other pilots, we have different ways of approaching each mission stage. I found your process to be very organized, and I think we would find that very helpful
Hi Stefan, nice overview! For weather, I find Aeroweather very helpfull to get (and decode) METARs and TAF's for airports in my vicinity. When I go old-school with map, compass and stopwatch (my ipad failed on me a couple of times due to overheating so I like to be prepared), I like E6B Pathfinder to help with calculation of wind correction for headings and groundspeed. for my navplan.
Awesome tip on that Windy feature! Also a big fan of GRAMET. I've found it to be extremely accurate. I wish there was a way to pay for it or something to bypass the Captcha system. Thanks!
Live ATC is great for learning aviation jargon in another language. I'm currently doing my PPL in France and in French. I'm pretty good at French but Live ATC helping lots with all the aviation jargon :)
I have OpenADSB showing aircraft in the area, xWind which calculates cross wind component, and Aviator Weather, which translates METAR, TAF and NOTAMs for any airport that reports them.
This was another great video that you made for the benefit of your viewers. Thanks for telling and showing how you use it. It's a nice personal touch that you are trying to help me (and others) and I feel more and more connected with your channel (and you). It's great to get to know you better and helps convince me to head to Australia one day. I had the best vacation of my life in the south island of New Zealand a few years ago and I thought I'd go back, but maybe it should be your world. Thanks for caring to help your fans and internet friends. Greetings from the USA.
Hope you have a great flight to Wycheproof - I grew up there. Make sure you climb the world's smallest mountain, Mt Wycheproof and the only town in Victoria where the railway runs down the middle of the highway (Broadway) - the bakery is highly recommended for lunch!
Request for Stef: May you do some Flight Sim Videos? I remember those MSFS and XP11 videos, Those were very fun! Now we have XP12 and then MSFS 2024 is coming out in a few months!
Is it ture, if a solar flare hits power grids on earth, all planes fall out the sky? Its an absolute genuine question. How creative can you get explaining this concept to a unaware person like myself. But i assume many more people would want to know that conceptual thought.
Hey stef I saw you the other day outside when VH-🌎MS was getting fixed and Wanted to ask if you will be flying to Avalon next year but missed you I’m a student at MFS thanks and love your work
Yeah I use Flight ATC just to see what’s going on. It’s a good tool to see how busy the controllers are on a given day. How quick are they able to get back to aircraft with information and so on. By the way greetings from West Texas, U.S.A.
Thanks for the video , amazing once again. QUESTION!!: Do u have internet and or mobile signal on board during flight ? Obv apps with live data feeds need internet to function so how does that work ? If anybody else has the answer please share !
Great info mate, wasn't aware of the windy features. I was disappointed that I had a pop-up ad for a scam featuring an AI generated popular newsreader spruiking a program developed by Gina Rhineheart for Aussies to make thousands of dollars per day. I guess you don't get any say on what ads we see though. Keep up the great GA content 👍🛩️
Thanks for the video. I hadn't noticed the "Route Planning" button in Windy before (which is skipped over in the video -- that's what brings up the VFR/IFR/etc menu). However, the really useful "weather during the flight" stuff is blurred out... you have to pay for "Premium" Windy to get it. Likewise 10-day forecasts. :(

This is great. Slightly different question: is there any free you can use to track your own flight while flying commercial? Google and Apple Maps can’t seem to want to lock in the gps enough while in flight mode

Hi Stefan, I think the version of Windy you are using is "Premium" right with a paid subscription? I don't have options for VFR etc and adding waypoints.
Windy is great! I know some Important People who use it, unofficially, to supplement official weather data. I've flown with a Bad Elf GPS for years and its app draws pretty maps. Much better GPS data than the iPad's internal GPS. Best of all, it amuses me. 🙂
I personally prefer the size of the iPad Mini, but I do know pilots who fly with a full sized iPad. Depends on the aircraft you're flying and your personal preferences, but for me the iPad Mini 6 is what I use.
