From one ole' geezer to the next..I truly appreciate your insight on this video. It's especially comforting learning from an ole' geezer who flew when we just used pencils and E6-B. You understand both, and I feel confident in your experience and wisdom. The kids learning to fly these days are good kids, don't get me wrong, but we ole' geezers still remember how it was to fly when we had to calculate & fly all of this with pencil, paper, and E6-B. KSEZ is a breath taking destination. I'm glad you had the opportunity to fly and rest there along your journey. I've been to KSEZ multiple times and have enjoyed the magical experience of landing on that plateau. Great people and great times. You must have the Performance Plus version of ForeFlight. I am going to upgrade after viewing the many xtra features available. I especially like the 3D feature and expanded performance features. Thank you!
Only complaint is that I'm new to fore flight...I would have liked to see what buttons got you the different info. Edit...then I found the accompanying docs. All good now👍
I may have missed some, but in the video the red rectangles represent screen "taps" in ForeFlight. Let me know if you have questions. Thanks for watching! Wayne (DA40 KSBA)
I've been flying with Garmin Pilot (because I wanted the watch and you need the app for the watch to function) but at this point I'm over the issues, complexity, and lack of good video's explaining how to use it. This video ALONE has already taught me 70-80% of what I would want to know making the change, and MORE than I know after using Garmin Pilot for around a full year. My subscription expires next month, and I will be making the change this month to make sure I'm well off with the switch. Thank you very much!
Thank you for posting and greetings from EHBK! Great to see how to adapted ForeFlight... I am currently using SkyDemon but I may want to try ForeFlight too when I plan to go flying in the US. Many happy landings!
Outstanding video. Thanks for encapsulating the basics of EFB flight planning. There are a TON of bells and whistles in ForeFlight, and new pilots like myself often wonder which parts are "critical" and which are "nice to have". In the end, the tools are just that: "tools". They are not processes or checklists, and we need to use them to our advantage to do our 91.103 work ("...become familiar with all available information concerning that flight.") Looking forward to watching more videos from you. Thanks for your effort.
Thank you for doing this video. To other viewers: please note that you need the premium subscription to have some of the features shown in this video. I figured that out the hard way.
Thanks for watching. The companion document does note with an asterisk which features require more than the Basic subscription: bit.ly/wam-foreflight-vfr-xc
Wayne, I've had Foreflight for about 3 years and while it has been very useful, I can't say that I've mastered it. I just upgraded to the "Performance Plus' version and this video was helpful in learning some of the new (to me) capabilities. Thanks for all of your professional level entertainment videos.
David, super happy that you've found the video(s) useful! Many thanks for checking in. Wayne (DA40 KSBA)... if you haven't already, this doc provides the specific ForeFlight commands that follow the video (incl the Perf version stuff): bit.ly/wam-foreflight-vfr-xc
Excellent video! Informative and well made. This was the information I was looking for as I’m just starting to use foreflight. Where do you get your compass course in this plan? I didn’t see you discuss that.
Very pleased that you enjoyed the video. In ForeFlight the NavLog can be obtained and printed in two spots: (1) the Maps tab, FPL drawer, NavLog tab... and for an even more complete NavLog, (2) the Flights tab, select a Flight, NavLog at the top. All the best! Wayne (DA40 KSBA)
Amazing video. Looking at garmin vs foreflight as what to use as a student pilot. The way you clearly explain the features make the process so much easier cheers.
This was another great video - just the right amount of detail and length. And the accompanying documentation. I watch a lot of aviation channels - for entertainment and education - but this is one of the few I’ve subscribed too.
Great video! How did you get ForeFlight to give you the error, “Max useable fuel exceed by…”? I’m guess it’s because you bought their top tiered package, consider all the cool 3D stuff you have access to. I only have their middle package.
Nick, I'm not sure which subscription level provides that "max fuel exceeded" message... but I do indeed have the Performance Plus (the upper of 3 tiers) subscription. The fuel, weight, takeoff/landing calcs that are found under the Flights tab come with that subscription, along with the 3D stuff you noted (also PDC - Pre-Departure Clearance). I doubt that the 3D by itself justifies the $100 upgrade, but together with the other items I just listed, maybe yes. Thanks for watching! Wayne (DA40 KSBA)
Jeff, yes, I put each departure/destination pair into a separate Flight. For planning a total trip, I then use a spreadsheet to roll things up. Here's my spreadsheet for a 3-leg day... docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1MP_eF7EirTWK1JTu_vXT9SuowEnfX6o3vcIhRl4YfDM/edit?usp=sharing
Robert, yes, the Performance Plus subscription level provides "3D View" including pre-flying a planned route and post-flying a captured tracklog. Glad you enjoyed the video, and thanks for watching! Wayne (DA40 KSBA)
Well certainly one can fly an IFR-intended route under Visual Flight Rules (i.e. with proper cloud clearances and at hemispheric altitudes). On the other end of the spectrum, navigating with reference only to visible ground features (i.e. pilotage) also makes a fine outing. Wayne (DA40 KSBA)

I mean, kids nowadays still need to learn to use pencil, paper and and E6-B! No school is leaving those out just quite yet.

Love “Route Advisory” in ForeFlight and Windy!!!!
Ron, we're in full agreement! Thanks for watching. Wayne
Very nice video, I just wish you showed which buttons you were selecting to get to these sections.
Ralph, I believe the companion document does list some of the "button selections"... bit.ly/wam-foreflight-vfr-xc

Very cool. Enjoyed learning at a high level the flight-planning process.
Dean, glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching. Wayne (DA40 KSBA)
Thanks so much for the video! Working on my xc as well and this was very helpful. Cheers and safe flying!
Chris, very glad you enjoyed the video. Enjoy all your future cross-country adventures! Wayne (DA40 KSBA)
ForeFlight looks very intimidating but after watching this video it’s not so confusing ! I enjoyed the breakdown ! Thank you dearly !

Thanks!
Glad it was helpful! Wayne (DA40 KSBA)
Great video!
Okay I loved this, I’m about to do my first solo x country tomorrow so my nerves are up but this was so calming!
So glad you enjoyed the video, and even found it calming! 🙂Bes wishes on your XC. Wayne (DA40 KSBA)
I love your manner! Makes me want to go to Santa Fe

Good job on the video. I do for flight training and this is a very good example of how you would plan this trip. Thank you.
Dennis, glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks and happy 2023! Wayne (DA40 KSBA)
Another home run! Terrific overview of the features. Guess I need to upgrade my FF subscription.
Thanks for watching... glad you find the info useful. All the best! Wayne (DA40 KSBA)

Paul, appreciate the kind words and so glad you enjoy the content. Thanks! Wayne (DA40 KSBA)
Helpful overview to this recently rusty, analog-era pilot, thanks! And was that Chimayo in the final destination images?
Glad you found the video useful. Was Chimayo, but not my photo. Fly often and safely. Wayne (DA40 KSBA)
This video makes me want to upgrade to performance plus
Great video!

Since we have ForeFlight now, isn’t it ridiculous to still learn an E6-B in PPL Training? Thoughts?
Must say I agree with you. 🙂 Wayne (DA40 KSBA)
Each leg is a separate flight plan? How do you manage the total trip then with fuel burn and times?
Jeff, yes, I put each departure/destination pair into a separate Flight. For planning a total trip, I then use a spreadsheet to roll things up. Here's my spreadsheet for a 3-leg day... docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1MP_eF7EirTWK1JTu_vXT9SuowEnfX6o3vcIhRl4YfDM/edit?usp=sharing
... I merely take the ETE and Plan Fuel for each leg and enter that into the spreadsheet. Good question.
Thanks for checking in. Wayne (DA40 KSBA)
What software did you use for the chair flying portion of your video? Does Foreflight offer that service? Thank you for your video!
Robert, yes, the Performance Plus subscription level provides "3D View" including pre-flying a planned route and post-flying a captured tracklog. Glad you enjoyed the video, and thanks for watching! Wayne (DA40 KSBA)
Great video! What’s your subscription?
Thanks for watching. Subscription is free. Wayne (DA40 KSBA)
I don't get a red exclamation point telling me I need a fuel stop on a long trip
How is this VFR when you're using IFR waypoints and GPS? Is there an app out there where you can plan a flight using pilotage?
Well certainly one can fly an IFR-intended route under Visual Flight Rules (i.e. with proper cloud clearances and at hemispheric altitudes). On the other end of the spectrum, navigating with reference only to visible ground features (i.e. pilotage) also makes a fine outing. Wayne (DA40 KSBA)
