Joseph also asked for the wives of some of his most faithful followers including members of the Q12. By cherry picking a narriative here it seems like you are trying to confirm your own biases rather than tell an accurate historical narriative. By their fruits ye shall know them.

Well the emotional context was simply that JS didn’t want anything to do with polygamy. His tactics in fulfilling the commandments reflect his. If he wanted to just marry a whole bunch of women for sex, there were more effective methods he could’ve used.

Not making any moral judgements but it seems interesting to me that celebrities of our modern time get a pass on polygamy although we don't call it polygamy... An anti Mormon PhD historian did honest research on polygamy, his name is Dr. Don Bradley. Don only sought full and true context for actual church history. Removing all the spin by anti Mormons like above. Point by point he proves that Joseph Smith never stole other men's wives, ever. No husbands complain about Smith marrying their wife. Ever! No children now in the hundreds ever said Joseph Stole their mother from their dad. Truth always comes out from the kids! No 14 year old wife exists. Her father only sealed the girl to Joseph and was only effective after her death, why? She married another man almost living next door. No children exist except by 1st side Emma! Proven recently after expensive DNA test results. The women Joseph did marry were pregnant and at that time having sex was thought to be dangerous. The children born were sealed to Joseph but we're not his seed. I will show you from Bible prophecy that a true modern prophet had no choice but to restore biblical Israel by restoring polygamy. Watch this.

Great question. All of the men knew about it, surprisingly. JS was sealed to a couple of females who were already married, but he didn’t consummate those as they were only sealings and not marriages. There are 10,000+ points of documented accounts of JSs life that if I had the time to read it all I’d do it. It’s fascinating the record keeping that the LDS kept, even if it seemingly paints us in a vague light sometimes. There was nothing sexual in nature about the sealings or the marriages. Our doctrine points to many reasons why we get married and sealed, one of those is that we’re bringing spirit children to mortality to gain a body and to be tested prior to eternal life. It all actually makes a ton of sense. Not everyone on earth worships at the feet of sexual conquests and perversion like the worldly doctrine of the devil worshippers do…

Latter-day Saints consider eternal marriage to be an ordinance necessary for exaltation, assuming the parties involved stay true to the covenants they make, and that these sealings will link us to each other. Back then, there were marriages performed that took place for this life only or in the next life only. According to the historical record and the women, The sealings to women who already had husbands were for eternity-only and these women continued to live with their husbands like normal. Now, let us look at “did Joseph Smith send men on missions to marry their wives”
The evidence suggests that 14 out of Joseph’s 35 wives had legal husbands while also being sealed to Joseph.
The husbands of Mary Elizabeth Rollins, Ruth Vose, and Sarah Kingsley were not members of the Church and thus were not serving missions when these women were sealed to Joseph. Presendia Huntington was sealed to Joseph on December 11th, 1841. Her husband was inactive at the time and thus was not on a mission. Sarah Ann Whitney was not married to anyone else at the time she was sealed to Joseph. Thus, no husband on a mission. Sylvia Sessions was married to Windsor Lyon. She was most likely sealed to Joseph sometime after Windsor had been excommunicated on November 19th, 1842. Thus, not on a mission. Some believe the sealing happened in February 1842. In any case, a variety of documents place him in Nauvoo in 1842. We know next to nothing about Joseph’s sealings to Elizabeth Davis. However, there is no record that Elizabeth’s husband (Jabez Durfee) ever served a mission.
So that's 7/14 that automatically weren’t on missions.
Patty Bartlett was sealed to Joseph on March 9, 1842. Various records place her husband, David Sessions, in Nauvoo at this time. He actually served as a juror the day after the sealing. Thus, he was not on a mission (8/14). Zina Huntington was sealed to Joseph on October 27, 1841. Her husband, Henry Jacobs, was not a missionary at this time because his mission didn’t start until January of the next year (9/14). Elvira Cowles was sealed to Joseph on June 1, 1843. Her husband, Jonathan Holmes, was a shoemaker in Nauvoo and according to accounting records of his store he was not on a mission at this time. (10/14)
We know next to nothing about Joseph’s sealings to Esther Dutcher and Mary Heron. Their husbands, Albert Smith and John Snider, did serve missions but since we don’t know when (or even if) Esther and Mary were sealed to Joseph we don’t know if there was any overlap.
Scholars don’t believe Lucinda Pendleton was sealed to Joseph Smith. Even if she was sealed to Joseph, we don’t have a sealing date. Some have suggested 1838. Brian Hales’ safe estimate was that it probably wouldn’t have occurred after July 1841. Her husband, George Harris, did serve a mission between July 1840 and September 1841. If she was sealed to Joseph, it could have been while her husband was away, but we just don’t know, so this one is inconclusive as well.
That leaves us with one more case to consider, Joseph’s sealing to Marinda Johnson. There are two possible dates for the sealing: Either April of 1842 or May of 1843, or she could have been sealed to Joseph on both dates. If she was sealed to Joseph in April 1842, then her husband, Orson Hyde, would have been away as a missionary but by April 1842, he would have been gone for almost two years. (11/14)
So 11/14 husbands definitely weren’t sent on missions so Joseph Smith could marry their wives and 3/14 have little records for the marriages even happening. I think it is safe to say that “Joseph Smith sent men on missions to marry their wives” is a false statement.

Helen Mar Kimball, the 14 year old who Joseph Smith was sealed to, wrote more about polygamy and her life than everyone else. I am going to let her do a lot of the talking but it should be noted that not once did Helen talk about any time being alone with Joseph Smith. Before I let Helen speak you need to understand our beliefs about marriage or sealings. Latter-day Saints consider eternal marriage to be an ordinance necessary for exaltation, assuming the parties involved stay true to the covenants they make, and that these sealings will link us to each other. Back then, there were marriages performed that took place for this life only or in the next life only.
According to Helen, the marriage was not Joseph’s idea. It was her father’s idea, Heber C. Kimball. “He taught me the principle of Celestial marriage and having a great desire to be connected with the Prophet, Joseph, he offered me to him … my father introduced to me this principle and asked me if I would be sealed to Joseph, who came next morning & with my parents I heard him teach & explain the principle of Celestial marriage. …” She then later says they are sealed for Eternity Only and that’s it. She never once talks about a time they are alone together or anything like that.
Helen also defended Joseph, saying, “If Joseph had had any impure desires he could have gratified them in the style of the world with less danger of his life or his character, than to do as he did.”
