A marvelous presentation of Riesling. You're the best. No bs. I showed a Nahe Qualitatswein to a client. He fired up some boar burgers then bought a case. Perfect pairing.
Great informative tasting. I haven't had a Riesling in a long time but it is nice to be given this tour through such high quality ones in the event that I ever have the opportunity to try one.
This got my attention! Years ago, I was "adopted" by an informal tasting group and they started me out on M-S-R Riesling; I was instantly hooked. I graduated to other varietals and regions, but I keep coming back to German Rieslings from any region. Thanks for posting this! 😄
I drank the Robert Weil Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Trocken GG 2017 last year and that was an absolute revelation. Looking forward to trying these new ones you mentioned in the future. Cheers!
@@siegbert_schnoesel Everything from Schloss Johannisberg is relatively pricey! I just bought two bottles of the Gelblack, and the current price here in the UK is £25 GBP per bottle. That's for a simple non-praedicat wine. Johannisberg is a top estate in a top location (and worth the money), but it's expensive. For example, I can get Schloss Vollrads' Kabinett for quite a bit less.
Thanks for putting a spotlight on German wines Konstantin! In my market there aren't many great German wines I can try (although it's improving) and now I just want to travel to Germany and go on a wine adventure 😅
Hey Kyle if you come to Germany I can take you on a grape escape to many ( except maybe one of them as the people aren’t as friendly 😉) of the wineries Baum tasted in this video … check out Weinkoepfe grape escapes 🍾
Yes! Great video for sure! Maybe German spätburgunders next? Burgundy is out of reach and I would really like to start my Pinot Noir adventure somewhere.
Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 2001, from the cellar, about a year ago. A wonderful wine; my experience with Riesling is largely limited to the less expensive bottlings because there can be a significant markup in the USA. Thanks! I will definitely look for your picks.
Thanks for this tasting Konstantin. It added some clarity to the often confusing number of German producers. I searched these wines and it's so unfortunate that many of them are not available in Canada. I've just gotten into German Riesling recently, so I haven't had my white unicorn yet, but I've recently put a 16' Clemens Busch away that I am looking forward to trying. I added Bürklin-Wolf to my list as they are also organic/biodynamic.
Check out if you can some bottles of one the two Haag brothers. Each one has his own winery. They are both from the middle Mosel and own top lays. Even their simplest wines are worth to buy and offer great tastings.
Just buy Rieslings from Alsace, there is no point making those german wine videos Konstantin when you keep all your best stuff for yourselves and only export entry level wines
I had a 1976 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Trockenbeerenauslese at the winery With Katerina Prüm a few years ago. That was pretty legend. I love Charta too.
I've tasted a lot of Riesling during the pandemic and I very much liked the vines from Kühling-Gillot and Peter Jakob Kühn; although none the vines were GG, mostly Ortswein and Erste Lage.
My favorite riesling is JJ prüm Graacher Himmelrech Kabinett. I have only ever had it young, had a bottle of 2017 in 2018. But I have 12 bottles of 2018 in my cellar now which I am not really sure about when to start opening.
Very interesting. I know now what to taste next time in Germany. I have tried a lot of cheap wines ~ 5€ during my bicycle trips along the rivers in Germany. I don’t really have favorite but I think for now I like the Mosel Riesling most.
Having in mind your good rating I am really happy that I did a subscription on the "Blaufüßer Lay". Also did one on "Pettenthal" but in that case it was not Kühling-Gillot but the Gunderloch vinery. Cannot really answer your question because their is no grape variety I had more often than Riesling and there were just to many great ones but anyway I am still looking forward on tasting the next great example of this variety.
Hi Konstantin, discovered your channel not too long ago and catching up on a lot of nice stuff here. Keep it up, it’s much appreciated! Currently in WSET3, I am expanding my Riesling experience. Best so far: Dr Loosen Riesling Eiswein 2016. If it has to be trocken, I liked Fritz Haag Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr GG 2018, very crisp despite the hot vintage. Cheers!
Tricky question. I’ll limit myself to dry Riesling so as not to go off-topic - although I’ve had much fewer great dry ones. I would say the Bürklin-Wolf Ungeheuer 2018, and the von Winning Pechstein 2016. I did enjoy the 2015 Kupfergrube by Gut Hermannsberg although not in the same league.
Konstantin, how about doing the same for some of the best Pinot Noir ‘s from Germany? We rarely have them in the USA, but I love to visit the vineyards in Germany who are producing really good to great ones. Thanks!
@@KonstantinBaumMasterofWine Unfortunately no, I am not kidding. I'm in Sicily, and most of the stores stock Sicilian wines exclusively. Hard to find anything outside of Sicilian. I did try a Polish Riesling on a trip to Krakow, but Poland is hardly known for their wines.
With so many choices of local wines to drink and taste in Germany over the many years of living there, I have no clear favorite. I like the Hessen Apfel Wein for lunch of Knackwurst and Schwartzbrot and a mixed salad. On another occasion I like the Franconian Wines of northern Bavaria with Schnitzel, Compote and Red Cabbage. Take me to Freiburg im Breisgau and I am happy with the local Red Wine and Maultaschen with a side of warm potato salad and then on another occasion, start me out with smoked whole grain rye bread, Aufschnittplatte and a Riesling. The wine is just part of the dining experience of a meal.
Best Riesling I ever had... It's either a Reichsrat von Buhl Pfalz Pechstein Forst GG, don't know the vintage anymore, or the Querbach 1992 Auslese. Both had them at different Michelin starred restaurants just a couple of years ago. But the Auslese had developed some funky medicinal notes that reminded me of sherry and it was amazing with the dish, nearly had me in tears to be honest, so let's go for that one. Btw I bought a couple of bottles from the Kühling-Gillot Pettenthal Riesling after watching this video. Vielen Dank!
Congratulations for your excellent taste. The Pechstein Spätlese trocken von Reichsrat von Buhl i was trinking som years ago was the best Riesling i ever tasted. And i sure tasted a lot incl. the expensive GG`s from Buerklin und Wolf. Have i nice day, from Sweden!
Hi Konstantin, thank you for the video’s i’ve found you today and am a beginner in this great ocean of wine. I found that the video’s on certain grapes or regions helped me the most! I’m looking forward to more video’s! By the way, video idea for wines out of eastern Europe like Moldovan wines?
Thanks for the video! Do you think you would be able to do a similar video for Riesling from the Finger lakes region which is know for very good Riesling?
Dry mineral heavy Riesling is by far my favourite wine especially from Germany. Is there any meal more delicious and invigorating than with fresh oysters and some baked fish? I’m from Nova Scotia… we are still catching up in the world of wine but the future looks bright. I would kill to be able to taste these wines all at once!
Could you do a video on wine from Croatia? I was pleasantly surprised during my vacation in Croatia by their great wines which are not well known outside the country. Best regards.
2006 Schloss Reinhartshausen Erbacher Marcobrunn Edition Marianne Erstes Gewächs Riesling! That was the wine that made me fall in love with wine in general, and made me become a sommelier.
Great reviews Konstantin! its not german, but Hirtzberger rieslings are my all time favorite. For sure I am picking up some of that Pechstein Dr. Wolf grape juice 😀
Great review. I would be very interested if you would consider doing a video on Canadian white wines. Canadian wine I would expect is similar in style to German wines due to the similar climate conditions, especially wine from the Niagara regions.
I hope i will be able to purchase one of Rieslings you had in this lineup and end up listing it as the best one I had... ;) I don't remember the name... I do remember taste and vintage though.. I had 1978 Riesling from mosel... Very rich! Also had these petrol notes one does not forget.
Awesome knowledge and content. Love rieslings. I would like to see you doing a version of this with less expensive reislings. What are some of your favorites in the $20 - $50 USD range?
This was AMAZING and so helpful to hear your take on rieslings. I personally love Mosel rieslings. Like you said such a pure expression of the grape and beautiful minerality.
LOVE a good Riesling! great insight, as usual. (PS - you reminded me of the Swedish cook from the Muppet Show when you through the corks backwards :) )
To me a 99 points rating always feels a bit like it should have been a 100 but one didn't wanted to set this benchmark. What are your thoughts on this? Let the baby breath awhile and taste for 3 days. And keep the finger on this button 1!1!11
I guess there is also a bit of a bump between a 99 point wine and a 100 point wine. Scores don't seem to be fully linear and giving 100 points is a strong statement, it seems to me that the difference between 99 and 100 points is a bit bigger than between 85 and 86 points for example.
Could you please do a quick video on the tasting you described? Do you have to pay to attend, or do the wineries pay to be there? Is it by invitation only? When you review a wine there do you have a blank piece of paper, or are you filling out a form? If it's a form what does it look like? I am trying different review books and find some I like better than others, so I'm curious to know what you use. After the review do the wineries use your ratings to market their wines?
Greatest Riesling I ever tried? Dönnhoff Hermannshöhle... At a business diner, and I could do wine selection. Just when the somm gave it to me to try, I smelled it, tasted it and had a large smile stapled into my face. Since then I try to get two bottles of it every year, but it's pretty hard to get.
You should try some south Croatian wines, like GRK for example. A white wine from Lumbarda at the island of Korčula. There are small amounts of it, and it just won a platinum award at the Decanter in London. Not just one producer got the award but two. One for Grk wine and one for Pošip white wine. Those are the sorts from Korčula island.
When i spent 1 year in hanover i discovered dornfelder wich i loved. Such cepage does not exist in france. This wine pairs wonderfully with fresh summer salads. And doesn't need archiving.
Hey mate great tatsing. Love your work. And that was a nice nose dive to some of the big hitters of German GG Riesling. Personally I would add … if we are talking price quality and VDP … St.Antony for Pettental then for Mosel Nik Weiss and Schlossgut Diel Nahe… but without eagle and May be a nice next video - Riesling revolution- new up coming winemakers of Germany - Weingut Meierer in Mosel and Nico Espenchied in Rheinhessen for some cracking Riesling, Weingut Heiligenblut Rheinhessen … and of the topic of a Riesling but all things Burgunder Simone Adams Ingelheim 🍷👍
Thanks Konstantin for telling me more about German wine. I have a question for you. I would like to know more about german food pairings with wines. What are your recommendations?
Really interesting to see this. Great video. Would love to try more German wines, and riesling in particular. In the past I've always steered away from German wines, as they (at least the ones I could afford) tended to be a bit too sweet for my taste, and I can see, that only the Robert Weil Gräfenberg actually labels itself as trocken. How do these wines in general compare or where do they lie in terms of sweetness?
trocken is used a bit more "loosely" if you will, as it can contain up to 9 g/l (variable depending on the acid content of the wine) however bear in mind that an absolute bone-dry german riesling from a top site would have a razor-sharp streak of acidity, would probably feel hollow and definitely hurt! Sugar is there to give balance, depth and weight... to me it's an essential feature.
@@SoulB86 I'm aware of the sugar content, and I think the next category is feinherb/halbtrocken that can contain up to 18 l/g. The keyword is always balance. For me it so easily becomes something too sweet and heavy, where I'd want to serve it colder to mitigate this, but end up losing out on some of the wonderful aromas. My personal taste just leans more towards the dry end in general, so feinherb is venturing into the danger zone a lot of the times. Perhaps it's different with wines from top sites/producers.
Thanks for an interesting review and I love your enthusiasm! It would be great to highlight keywords as you mention them by putting them on the screen as trocken this, trocken that, herbst (?) etc is hard to capture. Thanks!
I really love this episode. What can be better to see a German master of wine try and review German wine? You know what? You really should do with deutschen Spätburgunder review!!!
Super tasting, love it. My personal best until now was Schloss Lieser Niederberg-Helden GG 2019. i like the 2019 more than 2020, the acidity is jucier , Which do you like more 2018, 2019 or 2020?
Hard to say... the 19s were pretty great when I first tasted them but I am not so sure anymore after the last time I tasted them. The 20s are very together and precise
Ich glaube, daß den besten Riesling das ich in meinem ganzen Leben probiert habe wurde den Winninger Uhlen Rothlay 2007, ohne Wettbewerb. LG aus Québec Stadt, Canada.
Nice tasting. I love dry Riesling too. I didn’t catch the region of The last wine. Also should I guess these wines are about 40/50 US dollars? Thanks again for your knowledge!
My palate is not nearly as refined as yours, so I'm wondering why wines from Saxony never make it in your lists. I guess the quality overall is just not as great? Regarding your question, I gotta go local: Drei Herren Riesling Spontan 2020. (my best most recent Riesling, not sure if ever)
Does anyone know a good website where I can order some of those wines in the UK? Most sites seem to focus on entry level wines and their selection of higher level wines is very small.
Great video, Riesling is my favourite wine. Very lucky that the rest of the world hasn’t quite realised how good it is so we can enjoy these wines for a fair price! Is there any wine tasting events for non-professionals in the uk that you recommend? Ones that you pay to attend and try 50 wines etc
Almost every serious wine shop have their periodic tasting events. I would start from those, ask the shop owner if there are any interesting wine tastings in the area.
Konstantin, this a hell of a tasting, this year I had less German rieslings than last year, and I have a fond memory of VV Goldert, but I envy this tasting as it seems to be some of the nicest line up possible... Very well described, mainly the Rheinessen style, could not do better... well a MW with local understanding that makes a lot of sense after all :)... I tend to feel the GG are big when young and sometimes lacks the zing the Erste Lage will give when young... in a more approachable way maybe ... and makes the GG somewhat "overpriced" ... If I may say so. What would you reckon ?
Those names... I mean, Loriot was joking about them decades ago. And they even got worse. 😋 The wines, though, are not near as expenssive as I thought. Will try one for sure.
Hey Konstantin ich dank dir für deine mega hilfreichen und interessanten videos. Könntest du vielleicht auch ein video zu meinem heimatland österreich machen?
Love love Riesling. I'm in the minority but for me, all of the examples from Nahe speak to me. Especially if you know the village and vineyards, the smaller producers deliver wines of equal quality to the big names.
Thanks a lot for this tasting. Broadened my horizon since there were some wines included I never really considered before... but will consider from now on. Actually looking forward to it. Only one - very slight - problem I have: convince my wife. 😀😀😀
Great selection! In my opinion only Georg Breuer Schlossberg is missing. Although they are not in the VDP the farther of the current head Theresa Breuer built the way to the current system of Große Gewächse etc. and the Breuer Schlossberg is still one of the most searched after Rieslings globally.
Mmmm.. I'm going to buy some rieslings today. Any suggestions for a crisp, dry Riesling that tends towards grass/pear/honeydew melon flavours and has a hard minerality?
I'm very interested in the Burklin-Wolf Pechstein Riesling but failed to locate it in the USA. Any idea where I can order it? I am also looking for the FX Pichler Unendlich 2019.. It would be amazing to see a comparison between German and Austrian Rieslings!
Can you make a video explaining the main differences between Germany's wine regions + most famous vineyards?
I have half a case of the 2019 Dönhoff Riesling GG. Can’t wait to taste them in a few years! Great video!

In the past I've always steered away from German wines, as they (at least the ones I could afford) tended to be a bit too sweet for my taste, and I can see, that only the Robert Weil Gräfenberg actually labels itself as trocken. How do these wines in general compare or where do they lie in terms of sweetness?
If a wine is labeled as "VDP GG", you can take that to mean trocken.
trocken is used a bit more "loosely" if you will, as it can contain up to 9 g/l (variable depending on the acid content of the wine) however bear in mind that an absolute bone-dry german riesling from a top site would have a razor-sharp streak of acidity, would probably feel hollow and definitely hurt! Sugar is there to give balance, depth and weight... to me it's an essential feature.
@@mondarinvino107 Thank you.
Thanks!
Scharzhofberger Trockenbeerenauslese 1966. Still remember it after all these years.
I really love this episode. What can be better to see a German master of wine try and review German wine? You know what? You really should do with deutschen Spätburgunder review!!!
Coming up!
Hallo Konstantin,
wie kommt man denn an solch herausragende Flaschen?
How to geht such bottles?
wow! 95 to 99 points for 20€ wines? I'm in! Thank you for sharing
Thank you konstantin😊 🇬🇧
Does anyone know a good website where I can order some of those wines in the UK? Most sites seem to focus on entry level wines and their selection of higher level wines is very small.
My best riesling was so far Riesling Grand Cru Kaefferkopf from Étienne Simonis. But i am very curious to try your German picks. Be thrusty!
I really like the Kanzemer GG from Bischöfliche Weingüter Trier and the Saarburger Rausch Auslese from Forstmeister Geltz Zilliken
There are a lot of tastings put together by wine merchants in London. You should check them out.
Would love to hear Constantins comments on this
Those names... I mean, Loriot was joking about them decades ago. And they even got worse. 😋
The wines, though, are not near as expenssive as I thought. Will try one for sure.
the best riesling i have ever tried is Peter Lauer Fass 18. It would be interesting to see a video of the Saar Valley
HAHA I cracked up when you mentioned that tasting was horrible for your teeth (I have a hard time remembering to swish my mouth with water)
Hey Konstantin ich dank dir für deine mega hilfreichen und interessanten videos. Könntest du vielleicht auch ein video zu meinem heimatland österreich machen?
Bestimmt!
riesling is so beautiful, my favourite was the maximin grünhaus 2015 abtsberg GG
Had the 18 recently, and yes great wine
Love love Riesling. I'm in the minority but for me, all of the examples from Nahe speak to me. Especially if you know the village and vineyards, the smaller producers deliver wines of equal quality to the big names.
I cannot name a wine, but my favourite Riesling winery is Künstler in Hochheim. 😋
Thanks a lot for this tasting. Broadened my horizon since there were some wines included I never really considered before... but will consider from now on. Actually looking forward to it. Only one - very slight - problem I have: convince my wife. 😀😀😀
🤣
How do these compare with the Grossest Riesling’s? And do they age well?
Great selection! In my opinion only Georg Breuer Schlossberg is missing. Although they are not in the VDP the farther of the current head Theresa Breuer built the way to the current system of Große Gewächse etc. and the Breuer Schlossberg is still one of the most searched after Rieslings globally.
Educational and engaging. Next up ... Wines of Austria!
Yes, indeed!
Mmmm.. I'm going to buy some rieslings today.
Any suggestions for a crisp, dry Riesling that tends towards grass/pear/honeydew melon flavours and has a hard minerality?
What are your thoughts on the vintage 2020 after the monster that was 2019?
Linear, precise and fresh
How do you manage to taste 150 wines on a single day? Practise a lot?
Danke, Konstantin, interessant wie immer, aber teilweise viel zu schnell !!!
What are you doing with the 6 bottles of GG after the tasting?
I don't think he tastes them at the same day.. or would he?
I'm very interested in the Burklin-Wolf Pechstein Riesling but failed to locate it in the USA. Any idea where I can order it? I am also looking for the FX Pichler Unendlich 2019..
It would be amazing to see a comparison between German and Austrian Rieslings!
No. The winery should know!
The high end Rieslings von Buerklin can be difficult to get even for Germans
Welcher Wein würde am besten zum Raclette-Käse passen :D ?! Danke!
