  • A playthrough of Taxan's 1991 license-based run-and-gun shooter for the NES, G. I. Joe: A Real American Hero.
This video shows the entire first loop of the game. The ending changes slightly when you beat it a second and third time, so I included those endings directly after the first.
Since it's the fourth of July today, I figured a game to suit the holiday would be appropriate, and what could be more appropriate than a game bearing the subtitle, "A Real American Hero"? If you're old enough to remember it, just try to read that title without instantly flashing back to the cartoon's theme song.
G.I. Joe was released by Taxan, who was always a bit of an underdog despite the amazing quality of their NES games - well, at least those released after 1989 - Taxan's earlier titles aren't really worth talking about. But once they start publishing games developed by KID, like 8 Eyes, Burai Fighter, Low G. Man, Kick Master, and Magician - they had a line of superstars on hand! How many of you guys remember that message from Ken Lobb buried in those games' endings, goading you to play it again to prove you're a master?
G.I. Joe is (surprise!) a run-and-gun shooter that gives you control of Duke, Snake Eyes, Blizzard, Cpt. Grid-Iron, Rock 'n Roll, and Hawk through six different areas in their fight against the Cobra commander. The game play will instantly be familiar to fans of Low G. Man and Kick Master: the controls, jumping physics, and graphics/music style are all quite similar between the games. That is to say, just about everything about this game rocks.
You level up each character over the course of the game to give him health and weapon improvements, and the choices you make provide a neat way to change the game up between each playthrough. The game has a good amount of variety to it. In addition to the differences between characters, you get ride around all sorts of fun vehicles that can blow stuff up, and the levels switch up the formula fairly often: the first area of a stage is always a "left-to-run while holding the B button" type of affair, while the second area will be an open area that you have to search for the spots to place the explosives. After successfully completing both of those areas, you get to face off against one of the bosses before moving on to the next place to repeat the cycle.
I really loved G.I. Joe as a kid, and the game always felt me feel like I was playing out the action from the cartoon. It's still amazing now.
If you're searching for an NES-style way to celebrate the birth of the world's most powerful nation, you could do a whole lot worse than G.I. Joe!

I had this as a kid as I was a G.I. Joe fanatic. I like how each Joe had a specialty- Duke's weapon had the widest spread, Blizzard could fire through walls (came in handy in later levels), Snake Eyes had his sword and his weapon didn't consume ammo, Captain Gird-Iron could take the most damage, Rock N Roll's weapon was the most powerful and General Hawk had his rocket pack. Plus fans of the toys, cartoon and comic could easily identify the enemies such as Alley Vipers, Rock Vipers, Night Creepers and even Cobra-La Royal Guardsmen. You can tell the bosses off the bat. They did a hell of a job being faithful to the source material and this game is an overlooked gem.

Wouldn't that be Werewolf: The Last Warrior instead? :D This made me remember the truly amazing ending that game had; another great candidate would be Bad Dudes, of course. What screams "American" more than eating a burger with the prez himself? ;)

This game is absolutely brutal near the end. Having to plant 8 bombs while those insufferable missle launching wire soldiers constantly blast you is the worse. That topped with the horrible hit detection during the cobra fight makes it that much worse.

"Yo, Joe!" is a familiar yell to those that observe Saturday morning television with any regularity or have younger siblings that run about screaming toy weapons. Taxan's G.I. Joe cart is based on upon the cartoon series that has been running for some time now.

This was definitely cool to see. I actually have the old issue of Nintendo Power that covers this game, but it was never one I had a chance to pick up. It looked like a lot of fun, and I love the music when you pick up a vehicle. That said though, I felt bad for poor Blizzard. The guy never got a chance to show what he could do.

Both are great but I honestly like this one better over Atlantis factor. Each character has unique rifles, have more life, characters can SHOOT UP, and they have visible stats.
The unique abilities for each character and multiple weapons in Atlantis factor somehow feels like it is not enough to improve the gameplay over this one.

This game was made in 1990 and the characters in it were based on action figures that were released in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Duke is wearing his Tiger Force uniform from 1988. Snake Eyes and Rock & Roll look like their 1989 redesigns. Blizzard was released in 1988. Capt. Grid-Iron was released in 1990. Hawk's outfit resembles the one worn by his 1991 figure. Hasbro probably wanted the game to promote newer toys instead of featuring older characters whose figures were no longer available in stores.
