"Why do they learn it so late" is what I ask for half the skills in this game. The levelling process would be so smooth if they let you learn the quality of life stuff earlier. FF14 actively makes you do old content so they really can't build a job only around max level.

Shield Bash was useful in ARR extremes like Leviathan Extreme, where you could stunlock certain adds that you had to kill before they casted something nasty. Shield Bash is special as while it an GCD attack, you dont have to wait 25 seconds like with OGCD Low Blow, and can just spam it on mobs until they become stun immune due to diminishing returns. Its kinda useless nowadays, but for for dungeon content and older content it has its uses.
Ikr it not useless I use it a lot in dungeon mobs if I don't have a whm as a healer but if u have a whm as a healer then yes it is useless cuz the whm will stun the enemies better, but if u have the other healers u can stun the enemies instead

To clarify, the healing that procs Divine Veil is from any skill that's listed as a "spell" that does healing. This is why scholar's fairy heals, Embrace and Seraphic Veil are both Spells. Other Spells include Holy Spirit and Holy Circle after they get their heal, and the healing done by a Sage's attack spells when they have Kardia on you.
I am glad you go over the moveset, but I would like your take on how to play the job, going over tactics and how and when you think you should use abilities. I know you go over them a little as you talk about each ability, but an after section on rotation and playstyle would be helpful.
I was just running around doing 1-2-3 and some AoE and defensives with active Iron Will. This video was super effective. I hurt myself in my confusion!
Despite starting as a paladin and only paladin clear to 90 i also forgot about shield bash. Even though i share the frustration of its existence. Paladin has so many situational skills to use and some of them are dramatically stronger to the point of feeling like the pendulum of balance swung hard the other way once they get there. Before those upgrade points though they are are lot easier to forget. Spells are nice: No requiescat? don't bother then. Most use i got out of intervention was cleaning up after someone gets caught out and is way lower then they should be and the odd off tank scenario where a tank gets a helping hand during a tank buster(intervention has basically no cooldown compared to a normal mitigation skill) Lotta use out of clemency saving people and taking a load off but my main group doesn't like me using it EVER(even when i literally save their life with it :) ). Passage is really cool and really situational but theirs plenty of places to use it during most encounters. Weirdest thing has got to be high level paladin action when your a healer and you find the paladins health barely moving during fights between their mitigation and the healing they get from just doing normal attack things. I won't say they don't need heals but if everyone else dies a Paladin can often still be fighting if mechanics permit for almost a minute or more after the healers drop.
Shield bash still has its uses even on trash pulls that does aoe or tethered itself to squishy allies. What you want is really the interruption rather stun effect. You also have your low blow and other abilities too which I encourage people to use as well other than just your class abilities. No abilities are useless in the game, it's just situational that's all
Hey! Shield bash is basically another 10 seconds of damage mitigation as good as hallowed ground when you have 2 or less mobs. Stun one and shield bash the other and save your off global cooldowns for the next wall to wall.
5:51 I think it's still useful. When you enter a group of garbage monsters in some dungeons, you can interrupt multiple enemies from casting spells faster than other tanks.
# make shield bash great eventually For real though, it’s only real use is in PoD or HoH. You can use it to be extra safe but it’s not necessary. PLD Main since ARR. I feel that lack of gap closer any time i do old content. Low Level PLD is so dull i almost don't want to run certain roulettes with it.
I have some questions. I play with controller as paladin, but skills such as intervention I think would be rather hard to pull off with controller since targeting and changing targets with controller seems quite complicated. Any advice? (Other than "play with M&KB)
Oof. I know the pain. i end up plugging in a keyboard and use F1-F4 for quick party targeting. if you found any tricks to make it work easier on controller let me know
I love using Shield Bash when the boss is at like 0.5-1%. Is it particular useful skill in later content? No. But is it funny to imagine my Paladin WoL jumping up and smashing the shield into the the boss' face as a finishing move? Yes. Yes, it is.
If you're like me and have put off doing it forever its tank gear from Eureka (post stormblood content) stormblood has a lot of similar raid (8man) gear also like the omicron/omega raid gear. Theres also a lot if unique pvp gear also that's worth looking at for a fellow glam enthusiast
Something else with Shield Bash to make it even more useless. Low Blow is a Role Action available to all tanks that's not affected by global cooldown (OGCD), but stuns just as effectively. The only downside is you have to wait 25s to use Low Blow again whereas Shield Bash is on the GCD. But yeah, I've used Shield Bash maybe twice in my entire career and both times were in Sastasha on the first boss to stun it out of the AoE paralyze move it does.
I think maybe the reason Paladins dont get a gap closer for so long is because they can cast at range?? I don't know, GNBs get Lightning Shot and Rough Divide, so that doesn't really hold water anymore...
@@MegastarXIV No that's definitely not it, because every tank has a ranged attack from really early on. Tomahawk for Warrior, Shield Lob for PLD, Unmend for DRK, and Lightning Shot for GNB. There's some debate on Hallowed Ground being "the best" invuln in the game. All of the invulns effectively do the same thing: keep you from dying, aka being able to ignore mechanics (generally targeted abilities and shared tankbusters). Generally there's not a big reason to need full immunity, so going down to just 1 and no lower is perfectly fine, as any good healer will tell you that as long as it's not 0, you're fine. This makes GNB and WAR tied, as GNB makes you invulnerable to damage but makes you go to 1 hp, while WAR just prevents you from going lower than 1, or at least they would be if WAR's didn't have the shortest cooldown making it usable multiple times in almost every boss fight. DRK's is the worst in most situations since it forces your healers to waste resources and time to get you back up to full so you don't die, though WHM can ignore this entirely with Benediction. So with all that in mind, PLD's does effectively the same thing: keeps you from dying, but has an ungodly long cooldown, meaning it's generally not going to be used more than once in a fight. This means it effectively ignores less mechanics during a fight than every other tank. So while most people just see "Full invuln, only downside is long cooldown", most *raiders* see "effectively does the same thing as the others, but can only be used once", making it either 3rd place or even last place for some.
Real confused why paladin, a class typically known for being holy, doesn't have a revive, but scholar does. Have yet to figure that one out. Uh, hallowed is definitely the second worst invuln in the game, the order going Holmgang, Superbolide, Hallowed, Living Dead imo, the cooldown is sooo long on hallowed making it no where near as good as holmgang with a super short cd
It could even be argued that Living Dead is better if you have a WHM since there's not really that many times you should need to use Benediction other than during Living Dead and it effectively lets them stay invulnerable for almost the full duration without worry.
Youre absolutely trash at paladin if you think shield bash is useless. when pulling large rooms you pick the most annoying mob that has a ranged AoE attack and you can literally stun lock them. that way the party spends more time focusing on DPS and Healing rather then running to evade an AoE attack.
