      It was a work of the Holy Spirit that drew me to the great revival of the 70s.. I will NEVER forget a cloud of love/peace that almost knocked me to the ground first time I felt it. I hated my sin and loved right living instantly and I had lived quite the delinquent life up until that day.. Of course it was Jesus, He departed from earth years ago and The Father sent 'the comforter' in His Place until his return to receive us to Himself.

    When Lonnie Frisbee lived in Santa Cruz he worked for a while across the street from me. He went to the same Jesus Church (Mission Street Fellowship) I did and visited a Surfer's bible study at our house once or twice. That was a miraculous experience.
    He painted a 3'x6' painting for me, a copy of an Alphonse Mucha art Nouveau portrait. I still have it.
    He was trying recover from his divorce and rejection. He came back to Santa Cruz just before he died to make amends and not leave everyone guessing. He definitely was one of a kind.

    All of the glory goes to Jesus! Only Jesus! The Holy Spirit always brings glory to the Father. Lonnie was his vessel, and it is heartbreaking he walked away. I know what he believes in and he doesn't agree with what Lonnie did in his ministry. Greg does not believe in the power of the Holy Spirit. So no. He was not honored. 5 years ago my 17 year old grandson was saved after listening on the internet to one of Lonnie's sermons! I lived during the Jesus Revolution and wasn't saved until '86, but knew about the Movement. What a surprise and blessing when grandson came in one night and told me. I knew of Chuck and Greg but had never heard of Lonnie, and that night he showed me the video. I was immediately interested in him and after that I learned more about him. @@ItsAlohaMonday this is not about Lonnie, Chuck, Greg or 10k+ other people. This is what God did and using people empowered with the Holy Spirit. God seemed to remove the anointing of Lonnie with continual sin. It was not The Lonnie Frisbee story.

      @ebnphlo Рік тому +3

      I agree about the healing part in the movie. When Lonnie prayed for the woman with deafness in one ear, she shows no emotion except a slight smile & they move on. I noticed that it seems that the film later focused on Lonnie’s major sin being pride & perhaps they were insinuating that it wasn’t really the Holy Spirit anointing to heal but rather Lonnie capitalizing on the sensational to keep the audience focused on him. I’m not saying that is the truth; it’s just one way to look at it (why they didn’t focus more on the manifestation of the Holy Spirit like people getting “slain in the Spirit” or getting “baptized in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues”.
      I believe all that was occurring powerfully under Lonnie’s ministry from the research I’ve done so far. Pastor Chuck Smith was not so groovy with all that “sensationalism.” It’s still the same today where the Spirit is quenched but God is mercifully & graciously moving once again on our behalf. We need both the solid teaching of the whole Word of God AND the power of the Holy Spirit so we can supernaturally do what the Word says; to do as Jesus did on this planet when he walked this earth. One without the other is either dangerous or ineffective.
      Maybe the producers of The Jesus Revolution were seeking to avoid the controversy that often still separates denominations today and keep the film focused on salvations & discipleship.

    • @Burbankelly
      @Burbankelly Рік тому +9

      @@ebnphlo spiritual gifts and being “slain in the spirit” never convey well on film. It’s impossible to capture the Holy Spirit working inside someone or in a room on film so it just comes off very poorly. I think they were wise to focus on the fact that so many were being drawn and lives saved and changed with touches of the Holy Spirit aspect so that very important piece is not left out entirely. That’s just my observations.

    • @ItsAlohaMonday
      @ItsAlohaMonday Рік тому +1

      @@joinjen3854 the movie was pretty biased in favor towards Chuck Smith...and if you even watched the movie, the movie was ALL ABOUT GREG AND CHUCH - that's all I'm trying to say. Movie makers have a bias and they have the power to divert and highlight certain things that they want to convey a message, that's what film making does. I'm just saying that's what happened in this film. And just because you give honor to whom honor is due doesn't mean that you're declaring that it was all about them. You can HONOR the prophets of God and still know that God did it. According to Lonnie's brother, so much could have happened in this movie that expressed truth. As someone who works in media, there are adjustments that could've been made and they didn't have to add an hour more to the film or break the bank. I'm just pointing out the bias, I"m not knocking the filmmakers for shoving their perspective in the film narrative, I'm just saying they "could have" honored Lonnie more but they didn't.

It was the most awesome church service I ever went to in my life and it hit me like a ton of bricks. I was high with the Holy Ghost for 3 days afterwards!! I LOVED IT! Some of the people would not accept it and they all left bummed out. Kinda like how I felt after watching the "Jesus Revolution" movie last night. I have not been to a movie theater in 2 years. Only 5 other people were in the theatre. For 30 years I had questions. I read all of Roger Sachs books, highly recommend them. I attended a Los Osos Vineyard at this time and after this meeting the church split up and I quit going. The Jesus Revolution movie was great at first. I liked it highly, but kinda bummed me out at the end. I was like "So, where is this revival? Are we to get another one?" I did not leave theatre all fired up on Jesus, rather walked out all quiet and bummed out. I give the producer a "C" on his movie. From the UK I have only recently heard of Lonnie since hearing about the movie. Stan said that Lonnie had a childlike nature. I get that feeling from listening to some of Lonnie's sermons which I found recently on youtube, he sounds so genuine, simplistic, loving in his preaching. “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.' Mathew 18.3 God used Lonnie in a wonderful way to bring others to Jesus. Lonnie seems to have done what God required and although he stumbled later in life he loved God. It is good to hear from his brother Stan who sounds so gentle, calm and loving remembering his brother Lonnie. I agree that Lonnie was all natural, I'm glad he never went to seminary too and retained his simplicity for his love of Jesus which attracted others to him because they could understand the message without all the big words. Yes, Lonnie probably did need some balance in his life between his ministry and personal life, and things may have been different for Lonnie if he'd had that balance, but God knows how our lives will play out from the start, middle and end. Agree with Stan we need word and spirit. As Robby says something is stirring and thank God for that. We are all broken, hurting and wounded people and Jesus is our Saviour, thank God he can use broken vessels. Amen.

    This is an interesting conversation. I was personally present to hear Lonnie preach at the Riverside Episcopal church down the street from the Riverside Auditorium. I totally agree that the balance of scripture and the Holy Spirit are both important. At the time, I was a 4th generation Seventh-Day Adventist and I have to say, the SCRIPTURE verse by verse teaching side of the Jesus movement was vital in my breaking free from Adventism. Describing emphasis on scripture as “dry works” is to diminish how I connected and am anchored in scripture. It’s where I get to know God Himself in the words He has preserved over the ages to reveal who He is! The Holy Spirit is part of my encounter with scripture. It is against this that I test everything experiential and doctrinal. My cultural upbringing does influence how expressively I may respond to the Holy Spirit. But I have decades of experience knowing He lives in me and guides my life! The Jesus Revolution Movie did leave out many things but the role of verse-by-verse teaching allowing scripture to interpret vs humans was key. Not only did it play a central role in the Jesus Revival of the 70’s, the high regard for scripture also lead several Seventh-Day Adventist preachers to get fired and eventually start growing Calvary Chapel churches by they way of teaching (referring specifically to Mark Martin in Phoenix). BALANCE… is the key. The Bereans tested everything against scripture.

There is no coincidence of the timing of the two. When I walked away from the movie which was so beautiful I knew there was so much more to the man Lonnie Frisbee . Even tho the movie may not have had all the details needed I did just as you said … tell me more about the anointing and the life of Lonnie. From what I have found his life was a powerful and beautiful story of an afflicted but yet anointed man that changed the world for Jesus. My husband and I went to see it Saturday and definitely enjoyed it. I wasn't sure why Chuck Smith expressed that Lonnie's prophetic gift was theatrical. It seemed that Chuch Smith didn't understand the gift of healing. It truly showed what churches are like in today's world, only much larger.

      I dont think it was the fact that Lonnie was healing. I think it started as Jesus power and then lonnie almost became obsessed that it became his own ambition rather than the work of the spirit. Thats what I took away from it-- lonnie and Chuck reconciled at the end.
      The film left out what else was going on in lonnies life around the time. He was going threw a divorce and then fell away. I think the film depicted his down fall, lonnie did fall but on his death bed he came back to Christ Greg said he had a prodigal son story.

      Having been born again during that time, I think I can give some helpful insight. It requires understanding something about Katherine Kuhlman and her method of ministry. The movie shows the Lonnie and Katherine together in one scene, purposefully to suggest that Lonnie was wanting to emulate her style of "anointing." A little research will reveal to you that she was quite controversial in her day, even among long time Pentecostals who considered her methods flamboyant and theatrical. Many questioned the authenticity of her "healings" as suspect. Joni Earekson Tada, a well known Christian paraplegic has a video on UA-cam sharing her experience at one of KK crusades where all the profoundly crippled people in wheelchairs who arrived early, desperate for a touch from God, were whisked away to a separate room to listen rather than taken to the front before the crowds arrived, as they supposed would be the case, arriving early. After the service they were all ushered out a back door to catch their rides. I imagine Chuck was trying to stick with the plain teaching of the Word instead of being an experimental "Holy Spirit extravaganza." Chuck came from a background of the Foursquare Churches, one of the more conservative Pentecostal churches, started by Aimee Semple McPherson, who also ended her preaching career in scandal and controversy.
      I also have a personal experience with John Wimber. When the Vineyard churches were still new, he was invited to the AG church I attended in Houston in the early 80's, where he taught a seminar on learning how to operate in the gifts of the Spirit, primarily, gifts of healing, discernment of spirits and deliverance. I have a theological problem with the concept of teaching how to walk in the gifts, as the Bible teaches they are gifts distributed by the Spirit, not taught by men. Even today, there is a great divide in the American church between those who think we should be emphasizing the teaching of the Scriptures, which is what Chuck Smith followed, and those who emphasize the power of the Spirit with signs & wonders, which is why Lonnie ended up with Wimber and the Vineyard. Lonnie may very well have been the spark that got the Jesus Revolution started on the West coast, but it was not the wind of the Spirit blowing through "miracle workers" that grew it into a blazing fire. It was the faithful exposition of God's Word, which is Spirit breathed, and taught by Chuck Smith, who became a father of the faith to those God sent his way. He laid a foundation in their lives that emphasized the reliability of the Word of God as the key to transformation and growing in maturity in Christ. In my opinion, after 50 years of following Christ with a solid grounding in Scripture,such as Chuck Smith taught, Jesus said that an evil generation seeks after signs. I think that is true of this generation as well.

    A lot of people are missing a big point of the film, that is, Chuck Smith very much continued in the word and the work up until his death, teaching the word and giving people understanding of the word. The movie is not about Lonnie, it is a movie about God using broken people to bring the Word to those who knew there was a void and would fill it with anything. There is a far bigger picture here that goes beyond what the film covers and beyond the general 2 years as told by the information cards at the end of the film. Lonnie was a piece of what happened, but Chuck and Laurie continued in the Word, teaching the word. It seems it can't be said for Lonnie, who had some setbacks and difficulties. The film covers the riff for a purpose, that healing itself (whether theatrical or not) is not the Gospel (it is only a part, and not necessary), but the Word must be given priority, because the word is necessary.

      @@bobchevallier8456 The Word & Holy Spirit. The gifts of the Spirit are not 'equal' with the Holy Spirit nor the Word. Gifts are products, though not a necessity, of the Word & Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit Himself, is the gift. So if our takeaway from this movie is "gifts," such as when referring to Lonnie, we're missing the entire point of this film. The point of being drawn to Lonnie in this regard is exactly why Lonnie was dismissed by Chuck, who carried on in the Word as he should. I do not dismiss God's work through Lonnie, but signs and healings are not enough, regardless if they are packaged as gifts, and that is the why Lonnie was dismissed. Chuck continued in the Word and through his continuing in the Word, God gave life to millions.

      You're forgetting that Holy Spirit is a person---you cannot separate Him from the Word, Jesus Christ. They are ONE. When Holy Spirit is moving in the room through his gifts--which are the manifestation of His presence, you've got to remember that the Word and the Spirit are ONE. If we shut the gifts (which is the presence of the spirit) for the word which directs us to welcome him and obey then we are missing whole point.

    • @RealAlphaDrum
      @RealAlphaDrum Рік тому +10

      @@danapet1 @danapet1 Im not forgetting the Holy Spirit is a person, as I've referred to Him as such. You're going straight to talking points instead of seeing what I've stated. I do not refute gifts are of The Spirit. Such gifts, as emphasized by general pentecostal movements, emphasize gifts as a mark salvation, therein lies the problem. My bigger point, as stated previously, is humanity being drawn to this as evidence by the nature of this exchange. Lonnie seem to do incredible things. But he had fallen away. Chuck and company, continued to walk in the Word, with the Spirit and greater things came of it than marks of gifts. The greatest gift of the Spirit, is the Spirit Himself, not the supernatural encounters, because even those who witness a flash, will still deny it. Those who let the Word indwell, and take root, are building a house with a firm foundation. Not one that can be washed away at the first sign of the wind.

I did however, walk away wanting to more of Lonnie so I’m glad there are books out there that let us in on that but I was not bothered that they chose to let Lonnie fade out of the story with such grace.

    I think it was a combination of Kay and Chuck Smith and Lonnie. Flawed people open to God's will for their lives. I accepted Jesus at one of Lonnie's alter calls at the original Chapel. Chuck was a man of the Word and Lonnie was very sensitive to the Spirit. A powerful combination.

      Yes and I believe they experience a sense of a marriage of the word and the Spirit. Sadly chuck got a little affected by what ppl were perceiving and broke up with Lonnie. God hooked him up with John Wimber and the Vineyard church movement which I was privileged to experience when my full Gospel Church shut down the move of Holy Spirit. Every movement seems to persecute the previous one. We must pray for this marriage to be restored. Father help us for Jesus sake amen

    Thanks for this conversation Robby. I have been a vineyard church parishioner for over 25 years now. I have been studying the life of Lonnie Frisbee and his connections to Calvary chapel and the vineyard. I think both Chuck Smith and John Wimber hurt him greatly, and handled their relationships with him very poorly. In my opinion, both of those movements should publicly acknowledge the impact Lonnie had for them to be where they are at today. I saw an interview with Greg Laurie about this movie. And it seemed like to me he was trying to keep himself at arm’s length with being associated with Lonnie frisbee as well.

    I am 68 born Jewish and Bar Mitzvah and became a born again Christian at 14 but in the east coast in Long Island . I had no idea what was going on in California or had ever heard of Lonnie until I saw a video about his passing on UA-cam and then in the movie.

    Greg Laurie does not say Lonnie left before the tent. He speaks of Lonnie in the tent and the movie also shows Lonnie in the tent. I love hearing more about Lonnie. The movie was not about Lonnie, or else they would have included more. He was definitely pivotal in the Jesus Movement and many, many Christian leaders today. God moved mightily through Lonnie. Greg L also explains some differences in the movie vs reality. He did explain that he got started in the home groups and Chuck Smith bought a church and Greg made payments on it. He just had to simplify the movie and cut a lot out due to timing.

I watched the movie and yes it was Gregs Testimony so Chuck, Greg and Lonnie were tools in the Lords hands for each situation. I was saved in 1973 at age 26, I was not a hippie but knew what life was like at the time living in Canada and the Lord touched my life when I was not seeking Him at all but I am grateful for His gift of salvation and have never turned back and i’m in my 50th year as a Believer and my life has had several valleys at this time my youngest son of 46 is going through cancer treatments so if you want to pray add him and his brother to your prayer list for spiritual salvation and healing of cancer. However, it’s safer for some folk’s temperament or traditions to avoid “wildfire” because it’s out of their league of understanding & they can’t deal with it. Then there’s others who doubt God is in a meeting place unless signs and wonders are happening at every moment. Let God be God & let us learn to be content in Him whether He chooses to sit in our little box for a moment or he doesn’t. Usually God simply ignores our boxes for Him. But we can shut off His flow with our own wall of unbelief or pride that he didn’t do it our way.

      @@deborahszafraniec4829 That sounds like a very familiar chess game, just like the one in my head. Very familiar! Daily, I fight the voice that says “you’re no good to the world and the world is no good to you,“ “you’re useless, have lost your salt, have no fruit, and God has given up on you.“ The devil backs us into a corner like a pawn, isolated and alone, a leper. Then he torments us by letting us think we have so disappointed God that even God is beyond helping us. What a lie! And the devil confirms his lie with people who don’t understand, who leave us, or judge and avoid us. And every time they do we back further into the corner, our cave, where we isolate and suffer. It is incredibly painful. I am going to begin praying for your son this morning. Can I give you my email?

    • @meleshenko3767
      @meleshenko3767 Рік тому +2

      First of all I would say to him, “don’t confuse fruit with good works.” If you think you’re not producing fruit because you’re not handing out tracts, not sharing your faith with neighbors, and etc. you are so mistaken. These are works. One prayer can move mountains. Think of Anna, who was an old woman without family, probably felt invisible, and useless. But every day she went to the temple. When I am doing badly my daily struggle is simply to show up at “the temple.“ To approach God in prayer, and worship, And praise. This is what Anna did. She did it for decades. You know, God did not need people to pray that Jesus would come. God‘s plan to send him had stood from the beginning of time. However, like all things, he partners with us and appoints some of us who live in anonymity to pray for his will to be done. Like Anna, whose service was without fanfare. She served the Lord directly and he regarded her as a great woman of faith. This was her service, but not her fruit. Fruit is the character of God that “Rubs up off on us” from our hanging out with God. It’s the sweet aroma of love, patience, peace, etc. that comes from spending time with him. Fruit is not works. Our works don’t save us.

I thought I had to go to Bible College to serve Him correctly. One of the worst decisions of my life. They taught by the letter of the law and not by the Spirit. After being on cloud nine with Jesus .. so so happy and excited about my faith. ... after a year and a half at the college I had a mental and emotional breakdown... found out later it happened to several people there. To get accreditation they had piled on too many requirements and Christ was not at the center... I did not feel His presence but by faith I know He had not left me... it took a while but I recovered because my roots had gone down deep. The Unfailing love of the Lord and His Faithfulness.
