- Jeff Georgantes is demonstrating the Foredom H.15 Hammer Handpiece which has hammering rather than rotary action for use at low speed (0-5,000 rpm) by jewelers for stone setting and decorative work. He also is using AK101 6-piece Anvil Point Kit to show stone setting and texturing. He polishes with the H.20 Handpiece. Jeff Georgantes is a talented artist, jeweler, educator and head of the Jewelry/Metals program at Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH. His work can be seen in Alan Revere's book, The Art of Jewelry. He has a MFA in Jewelry/Metals from CSU, Fullerton, a BA in Art and MA in Sculpture. He taught at College of the Redwoods, Eureka, CA, for fifteen years and has taught numerous visiting artist workshops across the US. He helped develop and coordinate the Jewelry/Metals program at the Mendocino Art Center..

Hello there! Maybe you can help answer a question I’m stumped on please. Your hand piece makes easy work of that silver but mine can’t even set a cabochon in a 22 gauge sterling bezel and I have no idea why, it’s really frustrating! Wondering if it’s because it’s not fine silver? Maybe too work hardened? Just too thick of silver for the hand piece? Thank you 🙏🏼

Just got a Chinese copy seems to work ok. Next I have to get a few of those additional anvils, which I can get individually from cooksongold. I just started carving seats for my stones. I have high hopes for this handpiece. What is that clamp you are using in the ball vice? Is it needed as opposed to using the ball vice on its own?

Yes. You'll have to sculpt the graver yourself though from one of the available tips.
The screw thread is a little less than M3 (3mm) which is hard for me to get my hands on, cheap.
The Foredom thread is 4-48UNF-2A. Probably USA standard.

The #15 Handpiece is the part he is holding in his hand. It goes up and down, not round and round. That is how it is designed to work. You use a long rod to unscrew the collet area, and insert whatever tip you want into the collet (nozzle that holds the tip). The tips come in a variety of shapes - flat wedge, convex smooth, pointy tip, etc. The Foredom system is made up of a motor (SR, LX, TX, PowerGraver) + a Flex Shaft cable + Handpiece + Tip. Each has various models to choose from depending on your project and material.
What's the difference between the hammer handpiece and the chisel handpiece?
The H.15 Hammer handpiece is for engraving metal and stone setting and generally finer more detailed work. It holds threaded anvil points. You can adjust the impact. The H.50 Chisel handpiece holds chisels and is generally used on wood or other softer more porous materials. It is not adjustable except by applying the speed at a slower amount. Both are reciprocating rather than rotary and are powered by a flexible shaft running at a slow speed. 1. NEVER EVER use 'Dear' when addressing an American, it is highly offensive. You use it in India in a different sense as a respectful form of address, I know, but it does not translate the same way.
2. Visit the Foredom site, look for the catalog hidden at the bottom of the page.
3. In the catalog pdf online document, look for the bits they make. It is a whole system you can buy piece by piece or as a kit. Look for pricing at the Foredom site or online. Be aware that most Dremel bits will fit the Foredom but when you buy cheap bits from Amazon, some are great but others are low quality. Amazon does have lots of bits usually 1/8" shank (stem of bit piece) so make sure your Foredom collet (ring at top of handpiece) size matches this shank size.

Have you ever broken a tip in your hand piece? Is there a way to remove the threaded bit from inside the hand piece?
There are only two quick fixes you can try before you need to replace the plunger assembly. First when the anvil head breaks off the threaded shaft becomes loosened. If you run it for little bit it may come unscrewed. The second fix is more tricky. You can get a very pointy thin tooth pick and dab on a very small amount of super glue to epoxy on to the threaded shaft then carefully unscrew it. You must be very careful not to glue the whole thing together in the handpiece. Good luck.

Look at Foredom site in their catalog at the bottom. They have chisel bits. You don't want a hammer. The hammer works on metal. Wood needs to be gouged out not hammered so use wood carving bits made for wood.

I think that is a GRS vise. We do not sell those.

It sounds like the RPM is still set too high...

Here is my reasoning:
You consistantly start the hammering, but you have to throttle back just as soon as you start.
I had to do the very same thing when I tried using a 16,000 RPM angle grinder to shape some stones.
I would would not buy this tool based on your demonstration, and my experience with a too fast grinder for what I was attempting.
Iv'e been using one of these for a couple of years on an SR motor. It works best at around 2-4 beats per second which is difficult with the SR motor. Also, you really need to "feel" whats happening. I find it works best when it's set to hard impact and the head dances a little. It can be a very hand piece of kit for particular jobs.
I would not buy this tool either from this demo. It's absolutely brutal. You need to get the hammer running at a consistent low speed and move carefully and steadily. This guy is hacking into the piece and also risking hitting the stone. That revving method is horrific. Guaranteed, the hammer will run off.
The only downside I found with the H.15 handpiece (outside of the cost) is the heads have a peculiar thread size. Don't try an M 3 thread on it. The basic 2.5 mm heads cost me €20 each roughly + P&P. I then alter them individually for my needs.
That €20 is nearly 10% of the price that i paid for my SR motor + shaft + H 30 handpiece + a rotating stand with a selection of mini mops etc.
Overall I find the Foredom motor etc. a very wise investment and have full confidence in it.
I just can't understand how Foredom seem to have put their stamp of approval on this video.

@@wonbadood8243 - I use the SR motor and it's just fine for me :) The secret is moving your foot to the shallow end of the pedal to get a slower speed with the same pressure you use on the whole pedal for higher speeds.
