How fast do you want to go, how much do you want to spend? For those saying they can get something like this at a $500 or so price point, I'm calling BS. Go on line and you can see that a good set of hardened dies alone go for a grand or so. Add in the rest of the materials, labor, packaging, etc., and this is actually a pretty good price point for what you are getting. A lot depends on what you are going to use it for. If it is only a one shot deal on one car, maybe it is a bit much to spend. If you plan on doing a lot of this type of work, it's not. And frankly, when you figure that to do a good Street Rod (Not Rat Rod) you are going to spend roughly what it costs for a new car, adding two grand into the budget so you have a quality tool to work with isn't that much. You can always sell it when you are done.

To save on shipping you might want to sell a diy kit. All the small parts just minus the tube. So you can just get your tubes bent up at a local place and weld it all together

Yes great idea! I'm in France and I wants one but shipping will be prohibitive so a build kit with the dies and such would make sense for overseas. What kind of steel does the tubing need to be? Chrome molly or does regular softer steel work?
I like to just buy the hardware kit as far as the the dollies Dolly's and all the other accessories it's related to it Maybe do these upper dollies have the 401 Shank
Love this. Just started doing hammer and dolly to my 51 ford. Using your videos and the book "The Key to Metal Bumping" gave me the confidence and knowledge to do it myself. Was blown away how the metal just started falling back into shape. I need some other metal working tools till I need a planishing hammer but still love supporting you in any way I can.

That hammer is awesome man, wish I had that when I was doing more auto body work. I hope all works out, it seems like you worked really hard to get this project to where you we're comfortable with selling it. @@MakeItKustom excellent tool.. but.. can I offer two redesigns.. the arms would be much stiffer for their weight.. or much lighter for their strength/stiffness AND be easier to fabricate with box section tube.. as well, box section would give a better proflie to grip.. 2: it would be a level more convenient to manover AND lighter again.. by connecting the air line via the arm tube.. socket the hammer head airline to the tube at the head & the compressor airline to the arm at the hinge pin.. would help the weight balance much more.. cheers from NZ.. love your work.. love your philosophy of making the tools work for you.. my strategy too 👌

You might want to consider a quick release at the hinge that will allow it to open wide to get in or out and then lock to use the adjustment screw to dial it in.
I was a bodyman in the 60's and 70's, portable planishing hammers were common, but they disappeared, nice to see craftsmanship is coming back. Great Tool, it's very hard to hammer and dolly a hood like yours, but a portable planishing hammer makes quick work of smoothing out the wavyness. Great Video THANKS
You’re very welcome man! Those hammers almost never come up for sale from back in the day but there are some excellent copies of the Chicago and Milwaukee hammers Used back then. Because of the scarcity I created my own thank you so much for your input!
Might I suggest you make a quick release wall and stand mount. Maybe even one that swings to and from the wall that can be locked in so it won't move when in use or stored. Just a thought.
Awesome ingenuity man! Love the adjuster, maybe add a very simple quick release to open those jaws up a foot or 2 to quickly pull out out of the piece your working on. I dunno, it's just the first thing I thought of when you stopped and opened it back up. Nice work! Good luck to you!
Looks great. You can also use hex stock material for the adjustment handle to save the knurl operation in the lathe. Hex gives the hand a grr ear grip for something that size.
I've been subscribed and watching your channel since you started the channel. You're such a talented engineer and designer I know you're going to sell a million of these.
What a great tool, excellent job and good luck with distribution. Perhaps a quick release pin might make a less time consuming option for the adjuster, at least for entry and exit of panel/part. Kinda like a clevis pin secured with hairpin.
I just wanted to let you know I'm really enjoying your channel. I have only just started doing metal work and body work as I do a restoration of a 1956 f100 that I had shipped from Saskatchewan to Ontario.
Consider a shallow lower hoop. I suggest sleeved hoops that can lengthen and shorten by the insertion of a bolt-in sleeve. Your customers might do that anyway. Or, perhaps telescoping hoops that can expand from 24" hoops to 36". That feature would make your product more versatile and a more attractive investment.

Hello! I just saw the video and this looks like a great tool! I hope it sells well. May I make a couple of suggestions to consider(unless you have already considered them and rejected 🙂)? Since it looks like the air hose is in the way, would it be possible to use the upper pipe as a part of air supply: use a short piece of hose to connect the air head to the upper pipe and then to have the air input next to the hinge. Secondly, it looks like it would be nice to have a handle, like on an angle grinder, on the upper pipe with a quick release. This would allow a better control when working. Otherwise, I love your channel! Good luck!
Yea you can use hot air guns or induction. And really focus the heat. And then if you wanted use a tank if co2 to force the shrink. I just am never building a hotrod again.

Hi Carl, have you ever filled a stationary hammer with sand for dampening purposes? I’m assuming your hammer is solid enough that vibration is not a problem, and the extra weight would not be good for portability. This is the first hammer I’ve seen that is dual purpose, meaning mounted or hand held, the cheaper Princess Auto ones are too awkward to handle, and need to be sand filled or they shake apart. Great product, are you still teaching classes? Love your content!!
Thanks so much man! There’s definitely deflection in these tubes but because of the lower air pressure when using one of these hammers it doesn’t seem to affect it. Feeling the tubes in a stationary hammer is definitely a great idea but maybe not a portable one for the weight as well

Karl, My oldest son owns an online store that sells “Jerky”. I brought up sales from here to Australia. He brought up something I had not thought of, but if you had 20+ customers who wanted to order, if they where willing for slight delay, but he said “Bulk Sales Distribution” orders could cut the shipping cost by 1/2 to 2/3rds. What this means is basically bundling product into one large box design to fit the seaTainers to join other cargo and products inside a large container headed for that country. So, delivery of your products, bundled into one shipping box, inside of the freight container with other people/companies goods just hitching a ride by size & weight along with whatever products from companies X, Y and Z all bound for the same country. Generally, he said depending on each product inside the box, you might have to pay a fee for a port bundler to open you container box of goods, then place each one of them in the hands of the postal/delivery system used in that county. The sell “Kangaroo Smoke Jerky” and make large orders to be shipped to the USA. He never see’s the product as a port bundled handles opening his container, giving the prelabled boxes to the postal service and shipped to customers and local warehouses here in the States. I hope this makes sense as it would reduce shipping cost to our buddies “Down Under” so they could “Planish” their hearts all over Australia. Unless you Develop a contract with another company or distributor warehouse connection for this service. He said there many choices to reduce cost. It is like Alaska. 98% of everything comes in one boats or air. Air being the most as weight is the issue. Something they are use to. Just thinking out loud! ASE Master Tech since 1978/Retired.
I'm assuming the kit includes one lower jaw; can we choose the lower jaw for our initial purchase. I definitely need the lower profile lower initially.
It should be a convertible, where you can remove two equal sections of threaded(?) pipe (top and bottom) to make it a 12 or 18 inch, or add two equal sections of threaded(?) pipes to make it a 32, or 36... You show a 24 inch version at 3:41, imagine if we could add two straight 6 inch (top and bottom) pieces of pipe to make it a 30 inch, or add two 12 inch pieces of pipe to make it a 36... I even think (at 3:41) that you should incorporate that piece of pipe hanging from the wall in the background 2nd down on the left, aaaaand 3rd down on the right to get into those hard to reach areas, while add stability and versatility...
Yes all the ones on the back wall are going to be able to pin on so that you have different lower jaws in the future. My problem with threading added pieces is the vibration and how the thread score become loose and damaged. I appreciate all your feedback and suggestions thank you so much Joe

Find "0" Rings to fit groves in the adjuster, it will feel better and add soft gripping.
Yeah definitely the O-rings would be nice but I think we are going to go with the knurled adjuster

Great design very versatile will be a great seller.
Same tool with electric heat elements for shrinking. Would also be a good idea. Even induction would be a great idea. Cause as you know steel shrinks.

Hi Carl, have you ever filled a stationary hammer with sand for dampening purposes? I’m assuming your hammer is solid enough that vibration is not a problem, and the extra weight would not be good for portability.
This is the first hammer I’ve seen that is dual purpose, meaning mounted or hand held, the cheaper Princess Auto ones are too awkward to handle, and need to be sand filled or they shake apart. Great product, are you still teaching classes?

Thanks so much man! There’s definitely deflection in these tubes but because of the lower air pressure when using one of these hammers it doesn’t seem to affect it. Feeling the tubes in a stationary hammer is definitely a great idea but maybe not a portable one for the weight as well

Karl, My oldest son owns an online store that sells “Jerky”. I brought up sales from here to Australia. He brought up something I had not thought of, but if you had 20+ customers who wanted to order, if they where willing for slight delay, but he said “Bulk Sales Distribution” orders could cut the shipping cost by 1/2 to 2/3rds. What this means is basically bundling product into one large box design to fit the seaTainers to join other cargo and products inside a large container headed for that country. So, delivery of your products, bundled into one shipping box, inside of the freight container with other people/companies goods just hitching a ride by size & weight along with whatever products from companies X, Y and Z all bound for the same country. Generally, he said depending on each product inside the box, you might have to pay a fee for a port bundler to open you container box of goods, then place each one of them in the hands of the postal/delivery system used in that county. The sell “Kangaroo Smoke Jerky” and make large orders to be shipped to the USA. He never see’s the product as a port bundled handles opening his container, giving the prelabled boxes to the postal service and shipped to customers and local warehouses here in the States. I hope this makes sense as it would reduce shipping cost to our buddies “Down Under” so they could “Planish” their hearts all over Australia. Unless you Develop a contract with another company or distributor warehouse connection for this service. He said there many choices to reduce cost.
It is like Alaska. 98% of everything comes in one boats or air. Air being the most as weight is the issue. Something they are use to. Just thinking out loud!

I'm assuming the kit includes one lower jaw; can we choose the lower jaw for our initial purchase. I definitely need the lower profile lower initially.
A rear quarter planishing hammer would have to have a shallow frame to hold the anvil. Have you made provisions for that?

Yes I thought about a quick clamping handle as well that’s a great idea For the most part I haven’t needed it

It should be a convertible, where you can remove two equal sections of threaded(?) pipe (top and bottom) to make it a 12 or 18 inch, or add two equal sections of threaded(?) pipes to make it a 32, or 36...
You show a 24 inch version at 3:41, imagine if we could add two straight 6 inch (top and bottom) pieces of pipe to make it a 30 inch, or add two 12 inch pieces of pipe to make it a 36...
I even think (at 3:41) that you should incorporate that piece of pipe hanging from the wall in the background 2nd down on the left, aaaaand 3rd down on the right to get into those hard to reach areas, while add stability and versatility...
Yes all the ones on the back wall are going to be able to pin on so that you have different lower jaws in the future. My problem with threading added pieces is the vibration and how the thread score become loose and damaged. I appreciate all your feedback and suggestions thank you so much Joe

1-3/8” .120” wall DOM tubing. The 36” is approx 18lbs
