I just watched Todd Kolb video on how to hit a 7 iron and it was very informative. I have not played golf in more than 20+years and I just finished playing my 11 round of golf. And to my amazement I am playing golf just as good as I did more than 20+ years ago. I used to be a 5 handicap player and to my amazement I am now am a 5 handicap player again. I am now 72 years old and I am trying to play golf every day. My lovely wife Judy is behind me a 100%. She used to play golf with me and she is going to start playing golf again. She used to be a 10 handicap player and she likewise never took a lesson. I have never taken a lesson I am self taught. I plan on watching Todd's videos because they are very good. I hope to continue to play golf for at least the next 20+ years. I hope this will inspire some of your viewers. Thank you, Bruce McPhee
Bruce, you have put a big smile on our entire teams face. Thank you for the kind words and sharing your story! Seeing that you and your wife can both enjoy the game is fantastic. This is why golf is the greatest of all games. Thanks my friend 👍
21 year old baseball retiree due to shoulder surgeries turned avid golfer in last 3 months. Thanks for confirming my thesis. I had both the shallow and vertical swings down and couldn’t 100% decide which one to stock. Simple and repeatable. Great Video!
I'm not a senior golfer yet, but this vertical swing has helped me more than any other training or youtube video. You don't have to be a senior golfer to benefit from this. Thanks for sharing this info.
Thank you for the post and kind words. You are correct, the Vertical Line Swing is for all golfers. Have you read our book, The Bad Lie? You can find it on Amazon and it covers the system in detail.
Todd, I'm 67 and after numerous videos from you, I am playing the best golf of my life since you have focused on the "experienced" golf swing. I went to vertical line driver with hover and my playing partners are now 50 yards behind me. I just watched this vertical line for irons and can't wait to put it into play. I have also been focusing on slight forward weight at setup and it really helps to keep me centered at contact. Thanks so much. I watch everything you put on here and learn something useful every time. I was a 12 handicap forever and after your tips over the last 6 months I'm down to 5!!!
@@USGOLFTVshow Thanks, I need your kind of instruction for chipping. You are always concise and have a good drill at the end that always helps me get the feel involved.
Great video and instructions as always Todd Thanks to your videos I am hitting the ball solid and mostly straight 👍👍 Thanks Todd your videos and expertise are greatly appreciated
todd, i used to swing like that when i was younger and for some reason got away from it and started swinging more flat and struggled for years with that. well i'm 72 now and find the upright swing to be easier and more repeatable, thnx for the help.
Excellent and also add that by "flaring" your feet out that allows you more rotation back and through that will give you a "longer" swing and provide more speed and acceleration and the ball will go further!!
vertical line swing is Gold. Im hitting the ball better and more consistent. Im curious though on the downswing, one of your videos you said to swing for right field. I guess that was with the baseball drill, Im not sure if Im doing that properly but Im working on it. On a different note, I was watching one of your videos and you mentioned "tension" I have found myself making a couple perfect practice swings and then go to make the shot and tense up and swing for the fence. 9 times out of ten I screw it up. Im doing my best to not try to overswing and I am doing better but old habits are hard to break. 63 years old and trying to improve thanks for the great content
great todd..perfect tips..worked great on range..you have impact videos but could you have one that directly ties swinging vertically with compressing the golf ball properly? CHEERS
I have been a vertical swing player for years. How does your"vertical line swing" compare to PPGS or Trehan's vertical swing? Keep these videos coming!
Me too! So I'm wondering about this as well. I've been PPGS for years also (at least 10 years), and I love it. Trahan dives deep into the physics and physiology of the vertical swing. The PPGS makes great sense and it really works well for me -- I'm 74 years old. Trahan appears to have pretty much retired from UA-cam. I would also love to see more videos about the vertical line swing. I've also gotten a lot of help from your short game videos. Love this channel.
I been trying to figure out why I hit behind the ball. I can now see how shallow swinging influences the lead arm which influences where the bottom of swing arc occurs . I have tried everything like standing taller, playing ball back off inside of rt foot and more weight shift. I will give the vertical some consideration to try as I do turn with left arm across chest at top a lot . Hope it improves the dreaded Hitting the Big Ball First. Makes sense and Will let you know. Thanks for your expertise.
Hi Todd. I don't know if you'll see this message because your video is form March. But if you do, I have a problem applying this wonderful tip. The practice swing is exactly the way you demonstrate, but since this is. a longer swing, I don't have the continuity that I have with the short one and I lose control of the swing plane and/or the rhythm.
I love the more vertical swing. It's always had me playing my best golf - but I keep letting more traditional golf instruction suck me away from that. The other issue I run into is sometimes getting too steep on the downswing. With such a vertical swing, how do you make sure you're shallowing the club enough on the downswing? If I can solve that problem, I'll be on my way! (famous last words...lol...)
Good question. The key is not that the club is shallow, it is that it is shallowing. Make sense? You are spot on that tradition coaching has golfers believing they have to be super shallow coming into the ball. That works if you can rotate your body very aggressively, most average golfers simply can not do that. Great post. 👊
@@USGOLFTVshow Do you have a suggestion or drill that can help me to ensure my club is shallowing on the DS? or maybe you could do a video on this issue for us vertical swingers?
Hi Todd, Thoroughly enjoy your dynamic presentations and your energetic style. Your easy to understand are great. One question I have is what part of the golf ball should you focus on with various clubs, {driver, fairway woods/hybrids, and irons)?
Dennis, thanks for watching and the kind words. We like to focus on the back side of the ball or just the ball in general. Gear your attention more towards your body and the feeling of moving in space vs the ball and you will be more confident and successful in our experience. Hope that helps!
My apologies - and off-topic but the courtesy of your response would be appreciated! I do better if IDON'T GROUND THE CLUB TO INITIATE MY GOLF SWING. Obviously, Bryson and a few other golfers do it. I am inconsistent but when I connect I hit the ball quite a bit farther. Your thought!!s.???? Just hover the club off the ground for me!!
@@USGOLFTVshow all of it really...positioning the ball and how to address the ball with the club. I am just getting back into golf and a lot of the advice you are giving was not expressed by the coach...so it is a treat to learn from you...thank you
I guilty of swinging to inward as I use shoulders to take club back and hips to swing through... I believe I don't get height in top of backswing but yet I can still hit an 8 iron approx 150 yards with a slight draw... I'm intrigued to see if adding height will A. Sort club path out and B. Add distance.
Todd I am 79 and play once a week. I have been watching you on you tube. My irons suck. I am going to practice your vertical line swing. I have a brace on my left foot due to drop foot. I have to careful with my balance. What other tip can you give me to help with my irons
Victor, thanks for posting. A couple ideas, make sure you have a good wide stance for stability, flare your toes out which will allow the hips to turn easier. Those two ideas will help. 👊
As you say about the left shoulder. Take it round easy, as far as you can and try and point it at the ball. Then swing down. My only swing thought. Works every time.
If club goes straight back and up and doesn’t follow turn of hips and shoulders how does the club get inside the line enough to approach the ball from the inside
My swing has been short for a few years. I can make a free swing as you describe but as soon as I swing for real it goes straight back to the short swing. Been trying to lengthen my backswing for four years now with no success ☹️
Quick question love the content here. At the beginning you say you are a Stanford coach does that mean you are local to the SF bay area and if so do you give public lessons
I think many golfers swing this way because of their misconception of the “one-plane swing”. Also, they think if they make a shallow backswing they can get a shallow downswing and similarly since they take the clubhead to the inside in the backswing it will also come from the inside in the downswing.
You are speaking the truth here...some real wisdom....most golfers are better off getting the club vertical in the backswing so they can move to shallow in the downswing...
As soon as I go more vertical on the backswing, I tend to come over the top and hit a pull. Any suggestions on how to make the transition from higher hands at the top to getting them down for the inside out swing?
I have the same issue Carla. I been practicing in front of a long mirror at home to shallow my backswing up more along the line of my shoulders. I try and focus on swinging the club “around” my body, and not “above” my body. I’ll do 3 slow back swings, then one normal/fast speed to keep working that into muscle memory
When you reach the top of your vertical backswing, your swing thought on your downswing should be that you are skipping a rock across a pond or throwing a softball underhanded. This should avoid coming over the top. Credit to Don Trahan for these swing thoughts. They work for me, I hope they help you too.
Carla if you concentrate on rotation as you are going vertical you will be, at the top of your backswing, in position to approach the ball from an inside out track.
radio gaga, it only matter you know how far you hit something...if you take Tiger Wood's 7 iron you won't hit it as far as he does...if you are "short" go hit the gym...btw, it's all about putting anyways, this is radio gaga golf for "hits"...piker golf I call it
