  • "In Search of the Earth-Mother of Anatolia"
    A documentary which looks at the root of the Earth Mother goddess common to European pagan religions; call her Cybele, Rhea, Ceres, or whatever - she comes from Anatolia and spread out in various forms from the Neolithic to the Iron Age. One late form was Artemis of Ephesus, an Anatolian version of a Greek goddess who was then sent back to Europe in her new form. This film focuses mainly on the Lycians, who were an early Indo-European people in Anatolia who seem to have preserved more of the pre-Indo-European Anatolian religion and culture than most.

      I wish Europeans were still connected to their roots and ancestral beliefs and traditions. Each decade we move farther away from our European identities and go down the wrong road which is sad. I see why so many of our people suffer from depression, opioid epidemic, suicide rates etc. We are disconnected from who we are and our roots. Mammals aren't supposed to disconnect from their identities like that.
      Cheers

    22:24 Cybele as variation of the Earth-Mother fertility goddess of pre-Indo-European neolithic farmers, makes me think of Freyja and the Vanir in Norse traditions. That Cybele drives a chariot pulled by two lions is of course also strikingly similar to the chariot of Freyja (who is also is considered a fertility goddess) pulled by two cats.
    Some interpretations of the war between the Æsir and the Vanir (as described by e.g. Snorri Sturluson in Ynglinga saga) have compared it to the clash between the pre-Indo-European farmer culture (i.e. perhaps the Vanir) with an invading Indo-European culture (i.e. the Æsir). Personally I think there are some truth to that since the archaeological material (and modern genetic studies) clearly shows a clear shift (in burial customs, type of material objects, genetic composition, et cetera) during the later Neolithic era (~3000-1800 BCE) in Scandinavia with the introduction of the so called Battle Axe culture.
    Considering the similarities between Cybele and Freyja I understood that e.g. Britt-Marie Näsström criticises this connection (in her book "Freyja - The Great goddess of the North", 1995), which she sees as just based upon the two similarities of fertility goddesses and chariots pulled by felines. I have however not read her studies on the subject, so I can't really say so much more about this. I think however that it could be an interesting topic to dwell a bit deeper into.

    • @Survivethejive
      @Survivethejive  4 роки тому +15

      Yeah another problem is that Jord is the earth mother, and Frigg has more of the roles of the standard fertility goddess whereas Freya is more like a goddess of promiscuous and taboo sex rather than motherhood and she is also connected to war and the valkyries

    • @alaruno8325
      @alaruno8325 4 роки тому +13

      @@Survivethejive Yes, it's complicated. But I don't think we can exclude the possibility that there might be some traces here in the background. Traditions aren't static and with the introduction of the probably more dominant Indo-European customs, the older ways might have played a secondary role and thus been more prone to changes as times went by. The "original" form might thus have been distorted. This is however just some hypothesis of mine that pops up in my head as I am writing this.

    • @maple6573
      @maple6573 2 роки тому +3

      @@Survivethejive I thought Freyja's taboo sexuality was more a result of Christians slandering the deity who they were least able to assimilate into their religious paradigm.
      After all, most "earth mother" goddesses are said to have married their son or brother. It's a pretty obvious solution for the whole "how to populate the world" issue. But the story about her screwing a bunch of dwarves in exchange for jewelry sounds like straight-up "slay the 'dragon' Tiamat"-style propaganda.

    • @Survivethejive
      @Survivethejive  2 роки тому +3

      @@maple6573 Well even if that were true it wouldn't explain similar goddesses attested in pagan times. There is usually a goddess of Motherhood and another of youthful sexuality and it is clear Freyja is the latter although she is also a dark goddess associated with war and battle like Athene

    A very interesting synchronicity just occurred. I woke up and this video was the first video I viewed in the morning as I made coffee. As the introduction of the tombs proceeded I had a league flash that I had dreamed about something very much like them. But then of course I thought I was just confabulateing. So I continued watching. A few minutes later the memory of the Dream came flooding back. I won't go into everything that came back to me from the dream. But this detail is worth mentioning. I had the task of delivering the bones of a high-status individual to a place. This place was not high up it was far down a slope near the bottom. This place was chosen because it was where animals of some kind went to die. Rather like the stories of elephant graveyards. I'm not sure but I think the person was being sent there because of some transgression.

    When he talked about Bellerophon's deal with Poseidon and how he flooded great swathes of Lycia, I thought he was gonna make a connection to the Sea Raiders of the Bronze Age, as he mentioned that there were a anecdotal connection between them and the ancient Lycians. I thought he was gonna theorize that, because all their fields were now flooded, the Lycians turned to a life of sea raiding to survive.
