Its giving "access is causing things to lose value" almost how yt people thought of certain groups being allowed in suburbs and in ivy league colleges. There is an exclusivity certain creators want to have to make what they put their identities in seem superior. These 1st world problems are a trip .

I have never heard of her until now but I will say this as a blanket statement - I find it interesting how soo many (mainly white) who initially have access to these different platforms get so upset when the platforms become more inclusive. The expectation changes due to the creativity of soo many black people that can share and then all of sudden they believe the currency has “watered down” simply because everyone can do it. Historically they have done this with many institutes ( as you mentioned from education to real estate) which ultimately results in people not fairly being represented or valued ( if at all). Always changing the benchmark when it’s not exclusively for you 🙄 it just amazes me that they can continue to legitimately pull that move at convenience

Yall say "1st world problem" as a diss or read, but in doing so, yall be talking as if there isn't a shit ton of poor ass Black people living in the United States of America who have tons of problems. The issues of less wealthy Nations have like lack of infrastructure doesn't lessen the blow of 1st world poverty hitting my Black American ass in the face. An immigrant could call my whining about making $17 an hour a "first world problem" in a patronizing, condescending way... yet in America, if you make $17 an hour.....you're poor. Immigrants who come over to America quickly realize after living here for a while that $17 an hour isn't shit (I'm thinking about the experience I had when I worked with a 20 something year old Jamaican guy who told me that when he lived in Jamaica he didn't know running hot water was a thing until he was 14 years old and saw it at a resort and how as a child in Jamaica he literally thought all American people were rich and that there was no poverty in america....but he quickly came to see the truth when he moved here. This same man said that at the time of us working together, his Jamaican family thought he was doing incredibly well financially all because he was making $19 an hour and he always struggled to explain to them that $19 American dollars has more value in Jamaica than it does on U.S. soil and that he was still indeed poor, bringing home less than $30,000 in a calendar year).
If y'all want to check White people on their white nonsense, please use more specific language, or else you reveal your lack of sympathy for the poor Black American who've been living in this developed Nation with its wealth and infrastructure having been built on the backs of their ancestors for centuries and them reaping virtually no real benefits from it.

This reminds me of the story about the TikTok influencers who held meet and greets and had little to no attendance. Which, when I think about it, makes sense. TikTok’s algorithm and short video format are excellent for building an audience but makes it harder to foster parasocial relationships (which i argue is necessary to be able to influence any action outside of the app). Going to the opposite end of the spectrum, you have Twitch where it’s harder to discover new content creators so harder to build an audience, but that also means because it’s harder to find new content they like, viewers are more likely to will keep returning to the creators they know they like. Plus very long format, makes parasocial dynamics much more prevalent. And a lot of these streamers make a killing on ad rev.

I think it’s interesting she thinks the “mystique” of celebrities is disappearing or their range is being replaced by influencer culture. A famous musician makes music, a famous model their walks and photos, an actor has the movies and episodes they’re in. “Influencer” in the form Emma is part of provides their identity, “lifestyle”, and the parasocial relationship. Celebrity is not dying, because many celebrities provide other forms of art (besides maybe nepo socialites who are more akin to influencers w more mystique). As you said, content creation is not dead. You make these insightful video essays, run a book club. I follow lots of content creators who make makeup tutorials, styling tips and try-on hauls, history and grwms, travel guides, comedy skits, sometimes full-blown tv shows, music streams, etc. A lot of that type of content does not require a creator to divulge all of their private life even when it is in the vein of “lifestyle” content because it’s a bit more about the talent or knowledge of the creator just like most celebrity.
I think there is a difference for things like “the clean girl” trend of skinny, conventionally pretty white women posting photos of the same beige luxury apartments and green smoothies and claw clips. Then yeah, it makes sense that type of content has its creators feeling very unstable, because there will always be the next white girl du jour. Especially when the audience is only interested in who is the next pretty young white girl with the same copy paste social media presence, the parasocial relationship has less to do with the influencer and more to do with the typecast and peoples desire to be the typecast. “Wouldn’t it be nice to be a rich white person with no responsibilities except shopping and self-care?” And when these particular markets were unsaturated, there was no competition for numbers and it was really easy (and honestly still is for these type of people) to get popular really fast. This may be where Emma gets the idea that being an influencer is dead bc she feels like she HAS to be constantly giving all of her private thoughts and experiences to the public to differentiate herself from the next iteration by at least trying to give a unique personality and pov people can’t replicate to keep her audience. But I think even lifestyle influencers deserve to have their privacy. It would be hard for white influencers to understand that having the same “influence” as every other
white influencer in their group based on audiences being attracted to whiteness, perceived wealth, and vibes is what makes their world feel like could easily crumble.

Emma is starting to realize that she's not immune to getting old. She's not the youngest "young hot huwight girl" in the room anymore and I imagine she's becoming acutely aware that her $ is tied directly to her youthful appeal. What tickles me tho is her insinuation that if she's not personally able to milk the platform for its full value anymore, then it simply "must just be dead" lol. Chalk that up to the arrogance of perceived superiority, albeit presented through a sort of humble-brag format.
It is very much "a thing™️" tho. Her "talent" so to speak was/is to embody the ideal of the huwight woman-child. The qualifications are simple but iron-clad: be "barely legal" according to the creator's local age of consent laws, be the westernized eurocentric standard of "approachably beautiful" (pretty but not TOO pretty), huwight upper-middle class (or above) background and/or upbringing & all it's accoutrements, and a dash of social awkwardness & quirk so that she reads as "down to earth". But all of those factors MUST be there and when they aren't, the façade of celebrity usually crumbles away. Youth is the sand in the fame hourglass. "I don't 'do' anything but I'm really into clothes, video games and iced coffee" vibes are cute if you're a half-attractive 16 y.o. but if that's all you got at 25 y.o. or so then yeah people start to lose interest.
She'll be fine, she'll likely attach herself to some makeup or lifestyle brand that'll keep the rent paid past the viability of her video content. But the points she inadvertently makes are an interesting testament to the systems that granted her that fame to begin with.🍿

I think that this was a great video, and I appreciate your perspective. I do think that when Emma talks about influencer culture dying; I think she is talking about WHITE influencer culture. Those are the people she hangs out with; and white people are mostly her fanbase. I think you can have an influencer who attracts people of all different races; but even I as a Black woman can admit that I pay way more attention to Black influencers than White influencers. I think when Emma is talking about this; she is talking about people of her own race. To be honest, I do think being an untalented influencer is dying out; and a lot of White people who are influencers have no talent; and she knows that. A lot of them have also gotten popular from stealing from Black creators; and Charlie D’Amelio is a prime example of that. Black people who are influencers/creators always bring our gifts and talents to the table; so there will always be room for us. We are the people who make Tik Tok what it is; and that’s just real. I think people are tired of the lack of talent when it comes to influencer culture, or even in the music industry. This is why we see even in the music industry; people who don’t have talent are quickly fading away; because people are tired of the gimmicks.

My perspective as a white woman is that it’s very frustrating and unfair that every time the black community gets a piece of bread or opportunity to participate in things suddenly it’s dead and it’s not any fun anymore. Like what?? Black women literally just started getting more widespread recognition as creators and suddenly the party‘s over? I don’t think influencer culture is dead I think rather than influencing people to buy Louis Vuitton bags and drink cold brew we are now influencing people to question societal constructs and think outside of capitalist motivations. Not that black creators shouldn’t drink their cold brew and buy the Louis Vuitton bags lol, they’re just giving content that I genuinely think is outside of Emma chamberlains capability. And you are CORRECT that the content with which you engage and encourage is the content you will see. After about a year of tailoring my FYPs I would say at least 60% of the content i consume is from black creators from shower routines to commentary (oof some of my fave content rn is shower routines by black women, y’all really know how to smell good ‼️) and it’s been really invaluable. Anyways long story short I agree if Emma looked outside her whiteness the future would be a lot more exiting and less pessimistic.

As a new creator, it's so disheartening to be on social media. The eyes feels so restricting. Because it's so hard to be yourself. To sell your personality on social media, because the algorithm will force you to be in a certain niche. If you're not there fast enough, the doors for more opportunities will get smaller.
In the fall, the whimsigoth aesthetic is going to skyrock. The algorithm is already favoring skinny white girls, so those who are in marginalized bodies in this aesthetic will get less eyes. I'm so exhausted. I'm just starting. I literally just started taking content creation seriously last month.
As fall coming, I'm looking for more people of color in certain niches. I want to see more Black girls & other marginalized groups of people to be in whimsigoth aesthetic. To be in the 70s aesthetic. I want to see more people of color in the maximalist aesthetic. I want more.

No but I totally get you though. It is so sick and tired of seeing them oversaturated, overexposed, and overblown that it’s high time that our people be seeing being our best selves, in the limelight, and more importantly being recognized for it.
I was just telling a friend last week that whenever we do something in our spaces it only stays in our spaces but whenever they move or something happens with them it affects everybody else. Whenever you putting in the search engine you have to make sure you put a black identifier next to it. So if you want to look up weight loss routines all the white girls will show up so you had to put in black weight loss routines and that’s not the Black people show up.
It’s times like those where you wish that the algorithm actually did work in your favor by acknowledging that you’re a black female and would probably want to see black female trainers

With all love and respect, this sounds like a them problem and not a me/us problem, especially as I've never heard of any of the "influencers" you referenced in this video. I can only assume their target demographics are relatively young and/or affluent. I think marginalised creators/artists should leverage platforms like patron for sustainable income, especially as ad revenues tend to restrict the types of art an artist can produce. This inadvertently incentives microwave/pro-status quo art/content - which in my opinion, are relatively immaterial. What happened to the days of mastery, anyways, where art was collected, preserved and cherished?

Good video. I like your content & there are some great points here, although I think you & Emma were discussing different topics. You're speaking about the breadth of new creators, which is of course positive, whereas she was primarily talking about the overexposure of ALL creators. Both points can be true simultaneously.
Imagine if we had IG during the time of creators we now consider classics- Mozart, Da Vinci, etc. They might've never achieved their greatness. They might've become overexposed, instantly copied, & so forth. They mightve listened to criticism & changed notes rather than following their original visions. The good part of social media is that it allows instant fame for nearly anyone, but that's a double-edged sword. Creators don't necessarily have time to marinate in their own work, develop a unique style, & mature in their respective arts.

As the early 2010s came so did UA-cam(become more global), Twitter and Facebook, so when Justin Bieber came on the scene which was 2009, not only becoming a global superstar over night off of UA-cam but he was also one of the first celebrities to engage his audience on social media which celebrities at the time didn’t do at time. It completely changed the entertainment as we all know today.
