I am genuinely confused as to why ANY Black influencers would Still in 2023…. want to work with a brand that has 35 shades of porcelain foundation and 5 brown shades (that all pass the historical brown paper bag test btw)..CONTINUOUSLY year after year. Like idk what’s NOT clicking for these people. They don’t care about black women. They aren’t faking it , they’re consistently harmful. At some point reality should kick in.

The room designations are obviously partially dependent upon the value of the creator to the specific company.
There’s no evidence this is dependent upon race.
Are you really suggesting that the company said: “let’s make sure to give the black girls worse accommodations”

Nigerian Americans are often conditioned to aspire to the role of *the* sole Black person who has “made it” in white spaces, which is something for us to consciously challenge and contend with. Unfortunately, Specs has not only made it her brand, but has sabotaged the growth of the Black people around her. I’m so embarrassed.

Nigerians aren't a monolith so I wouldn't necessarily say that her particular pathology is related to being Nigerian or specifically Yoruba. Within Nigeria, cultural expectations when it comes to family and respect are wildly different based on what ethnic group you're from (I'm Igbo and my Yoruba friends think Igbos are more disrespectful because we don't have the same rules around family and hierarchy). But even with that, I'd still say that toxic families are toxic regardless of where they're from. Her narcissism seems to be learned based on what you described here about her relationship with her family. Yes, there are some families that will disown their children because of a nontraditional career, but I think that's true of families from a variety of cultures (and probably has more to do with elitism and aspiring to Western ideals of "success" ). In my experience it's rare and I've never actually seen it outside of media. But again I think it speaks more to toxic family dynamics than anything cultural. And I say this coming from a fairly "elitist" family and having a nontraditional career. Tl;dr being an asshole is universal. And it's beyond annoying that people like her (among many others) give the rest of us a bad reputation. The majority of Nigerians aren't like Specs but the few like her definitely feel the need to make sure everyone knows who they are.

I am a Nigerian woman in my 30s. and Specs or whatever her name is is crazy, attention seeking and has a lot of unresolved trauma in her life. looks a lot like self hate to me.
I will say that I my parents approval is very important to me. and that is mainly because they have made so much sacrifices so that I can live a better life that I just want them to be happy when then think of me. In Nigerian culture there is a lot of pressure to be successful, educated, and not disgrace your family in any way. So I would not be surprised if some of that has influenced Specs. However, her outlandish behavior would embarrass any Nigerian parent.the typical Nigerian parent would be like please shut your mouth and go read a book I beg

I wish we would serious boycott and tarte products, especially since they’re repeat offenders of racist drama. Tarte is very insidious with this particular mess because they let Bria/Fannita take all the hits and they went pretty much unphased and they’ll do it again and again because most people don’t look at the bigger picture; black outrage is good for any multimillion dollar company’s brand. Tarte knew EXACTLY what they’re doing by asking Fannita to come at the last minute. Tarte preyed on her naïveté. Tarte got the “perfect” black person to do all their bidding while excepting the scraps (specs and blazers). Specs will always come in and make the whites look good while simultaneously spewing antiblack rhetoric. This whole situation is a messss and tarte pretty much got away with it

I don’t even know what’s going on here but I went to college in 2010 and fell head 1st into the beauty community. It shaped me so much working as a manager at Ulta or Sephora was a dream job for me and all I wanted was to be able to afford Anastasia or Mac on my broke ass college budget 😂
I bought Juvia’s Place when it was just and indie brand and still remember the 1st collab w/ black creator Missy Lynn.
My 1st big pallet purchase was actually the Tarte Amazonian Clay pallet and I remember the manager at Sephora being so nice to me 😅 they were out of stock but he made sure I was shipped one.
I used that thing down to the pan and even to contour bc back then there wasn’t contour shades readily avail for dark skinned women.
Shortly after than time the buzz hit when FENTY foundation came out and they broke the internet w/ their inclusivity.
Tarte still Didn’t get the memo and continued to make tone deaf exclusionary makeup. After graduating I actually did become a prestige sales manager at Ulta and I actively would skip them when selling … which wasn’t hard bc most of my customers were black anyway so they didn’t have anything to really offer & haven’t bought for yrs.
They obviously don’t care for anything past white skin tones and I clocked it as a kid(aka my early 20s now in my 30s)
So I’m not surprised they are in more exclusionary/racist drama.
As they say “ *a snake only sheds it’s skin to become a bigger snake* “.

  • @EloiseInParis

Tarte is a racist mess, a lot of TikTokers and younger girls didn't know.
No one was mad that Fannita got invited last minute or went. All she had to do was get on the plane and enjoy her trip. It was that her first post leaving for the trip was an obvious dig at Bria, which was bad enough considering it was a fellow black woman she never met or had beef with, but her Pyrex issues made it worse. She was just justifiably complaining about the mistreatment of black creators, and then the first check she was offered after that she decided to sh*t on another black woman. Then she got to Miami meets Nike, and doubles down on hating a complete stranger for a brand. Finally she goes home and backs down on the "I know the truth" rhetoric, but triples down on her disdain for Bria. Someone she still has never had any contact with. She got caught up in part because of her age, but 24 is more than old enough to have some empathy and to keep the name of someone you never met and has done nothing to anyone you actually know out your mouth. Fannita laid low for a while which was smart, and if she goes back to her old content she'll be just fine. But I think the idea of Bria talking to her is ridiculous. You don't have to have enemies, but you don't need to try and make nice with everyone either.
Nike is a scammer. Her need for attention caused her to snitch on herself, and then be exposed again by her former "students". Her "influencer" days or over. Now I'm just waiting for her to pop up as a conservative, and make money off of racists in need of a token.
Tarte's days are numbered. Makeup sales are down overall. Their products are fine, but they don't have any truly popular staples, and their new releases are just ok. The Dubai trip was a joke because they flew out all these influencers who did "get ready with me's" using other brands and at times raving about them. After the jokes were posted, they quickly had the girls post videos using all Tarte products but it was too late. Now this Miami trip reminded everyone how they are not inclusive with products and racist. It won't be long before there is plenty of Tarte at your local Marshall's and TJ Maxx, and the brand fades away.

What brand would invite an influencer out to a trip and not require them to post a sponsored post? What would be the point of inviting her. Fannita posted as did Chelsea Olivia. As far as I'm concerned, many Nigerian parents intentionally raised sociopaths. I have many stories. Because I'm neurological different and came from a less privileged background, I've experienced a lot of control, manipulation, ableism, poverty shaming, religious abuse- they always hide behind religion and even college. degrees to shame others. Many Nigerians only "like" you when they think you belong to the upper class of society. They learned these bad behaviors from their parents, schools, church- it's very much cultural as you stated. But please, there are others of us that are not sociopaths and are genuinely compassionate, we also often fall victim to their toxic schemes.

African/Black parents before the millennial generation barely regard self-reflection (let alone therapy) as a habitual practice. There’s a lot of unlearning that needs to happen and hopefully it won’t have to be triggered by psychologically harmful behavior like the kind Nike is demonstrating.

I'm not here for neither Specs nor Fannita, TBH. One of the very first times I saw Fannita, she was talking down to a BW who simply wrote her a benevolent comment. Her excuse is always, "I have a personality." Such a weak, pathetic excuse for poor behavior.
It's sick that these women would conspire against Bria despite the backlash and attacks she's been receiving since Magdalena or w/e Tarte lady's name is shed her fake white tears in the "apology" video. The fact that Specs is trying to be a scamming lil martyr for white supremacy is absolutely bizarre. She is also extremely unprofessional.
Another thing is that a lot of influencer are going to continue to stand behind Tarte because they're paid to do so. When Tarte made that video claiming to be hurt I saw very popular UA-camr and TikTok personality, Meredith Duxbury or w/e her last name is in the comments acting as if the Tarte owner was being lied on and attacked. This isn't surprising...
It's gross that there was no solidarity between these black women. They're all dark black women but then the two decided to try and use the fact that they're dark against Bria who is also dark esp. after Specs claimed Bria pulled her "black card." I'm so sick of this foolishness.

I am and will not be claiming the actions and values of Nike as mine even though she is Nigerian. I think the desperation that we see in Nike to present herself as exceptional and “different” is something that is common among a lot of immigrants and children of immigrants especially when the culture is conservative and traditional leaning and they are born from a country that is literally falling and failing. you have nothing else to aspire to but whiteness because you begin to associate it as a safe haven and road to success.
I don’t really want to necessarily make assumptions about why Nike’s relationship with her parents is the way it is but I think my explanation regarding the conditions of Nigerian immigrants associating whiteness and capitalist ideals as an equation to success might be the reason.
