Measuring piston ring end gaps

  • Measuring the ring gaps on my M659 engine. Mainly to check if the gap is outside the wear limit, meaning the rings need to be replaced. Also to check they're not too tight, which they shouldn't be as it's all be together before. But after the piston to bore clearance measurements I've realised that one of these pistons is not from this engine and is a B piston going into an A bore, which means the ring gaps will possibly be a little tighter than they were ex factory.
For these 88mm bore Monster 659/696/796 models the ring end gap specs are Top & middle: 0.20 - 0.40, wear limit 0.80 mm, Oil: 0.30 - 0.60, wear limit 1.00 mm. Meaning new rings should be between 0.20 and 0.40 or 0.30 - 0.60, with no gap less than the minimum. And rings should be replaced if the gap is over the wear limit. As it turns out, I'll take a little off the oil rings on one cylinder to get them to the minimum spec.
Also amazes me that I managed to crap on for over 16 minutes here. My apologies, I can't imagine it's a scintillating way to spend the time.

9:15 aah! Paranoia - to be found in every Ducati owner's toolkit (usually next to the spare cambelts).

@@bradthebikeboy why not just use a piston to centre the rings in the bore??

@@munter10 because you want the rings square in the bore. pushing with a piston doesn't give you that certainty.

30,000kms and you’ve got the motor apart… so glad I don’t own a Ducati, my old 99 Hayabusa has 152,000kms on it and has never had the head off.
