The Truth About Body Positivity

  • In this video I react to recent videos about me and share my personal experience within the body positive community. I talk about how I've often felt conflicted about the messaging different groups share under the banner of body positivity and how i've felt pressured since the beginning to change to fit it. Candidly, I have never felt truly accepted as part of the community, although I was often called a figure head of the movement by the media. I think its really about body acceptance vs body positivity.
These are the two creators who have gone out of their way to treat me and respect me as a human, show them some love:

"There seems to be a sexualization of the plus-size community, under the guise of 'body positivity.' That, once you accept yourself, you should feel comfortable being seen naked or near-naked."
Thank you for addressing this. I have noticed this as well, and it always bothered me. I don't dress modestly because I'm ashamed of my body; I dress modestly because I don't have any desire to walk around in stages of undress. If I did want to dress provocatively, I would. It's not every woman's desire to be seen naked by everyone, or to be sexualized.

Fit Fatty Exactly. I dress modestly because that’s what I prefer. Of course I will wear a normal swimsuit (tank suit or modest two-piece) when everyone else is wearing a swimsuit, but the very idea of wearing a thong bikini at the beach, or a very revealing dress out in public is far too embarrassing for me.

When I first started to lose weight (210 to 135), my doctor, who had never suggested weight loss and only told me how proud she was after I started, said “don’t tell other women you’re losing weight. They’ll get catty and try to derail you.” I thought, no, I having incredibly supportive people in my life, she (my dr) is talking crazy!
Turns out she wasn’t! This is exactly what she meant! The body positively community is extremely catty to anyone that is challenging themselves to be better, for them! What does what you’re doing here, for you, have to do with anything they are doing for them?!
How can anyone say, and genuinely believe, you are hurting other people by bettering yourself? It’s absolutely insane to me and even more insane that they have a huge community believing the exact same way!

I had a coworker who after sitting close to me in the office after a few weeks in the office casually mention she was a health trainer and almost shyly offer to train me. I normally hate any kind of approach and judgement because so many times it is because its to force ideals instead of opening up the conversation.
This was not the case. Fast forward to a twenty pound weight loss. She is one of my closest friends and never once talked down to me and if she didn't like what I was doing (on all topics) respected, heard, considered my feelings. That is friendship.
People need to realize the difference between judgement and discernment and cruelty and any form of objectification.

I think the fat people who don’t want other fat people to lose weight feel that way because ultimately they want to be treated the same as average or thin people in society. They don’t want to get overlooked for jobs, promotions, romantic interests, and in everyday practical ways like the design of airplane seats. I think they believe that if there are a higher percentage of fat people in our society, the chances of them getting discriminated against for their weight will be lower.

    • @phoebeblack3901
      @phoebeblack3901 4 роки тому +11

Exactly I know I may be crucified for saying this but it seems that a lot of women attracted to the fat acceptance movement are using the movement to mask their insecurities instead of dealing with them. Their fragility shows when they are threatened when someone in their community has chosen to lose weight. They instantly try to attack and shame them in an attempt to justify their own body. If they were truly secure in themselves they would support one another instead of tearing down women for making their own damn choices.

I was blasted last night and today by people in a “body positive group.” I responded to a post and I was called fat phobic because I go to the gym and am actively changing the way my body looks. Why can’t we celebrate others and lift each up? Why do some of these people think that losing weight means you aren’t “body positive” and that you hate all people who aren’t on your same journey. You can love yourself and still want to change things. I want to be a better me, and through weightlifting I have discovered things about myself I didn’t know. Some people cannot handle others taking control of their bodies and their health because they either can’t or won’t themselves. No one is fat phobic getting healthy and doing what they can to make sure they’re able to experience life with less pain and difficulty. When I got over 200lbs all my joints hurt. I live on the 3rd floor. Hauling groceries up made me feel like my lungs were on fire when I was done. Why would anyone want to physically hurt to be “body positive”? I don’t want to have that as my life for sure. You do what’s best for you and I think you’re awesome taking charge of your health and well-being!

That woman made that video because it makes HER feel excluded and alienated, it makes HER feel bad about herself because she isn't willing to face her own issues. She is projecting onto you because of how it makes her feel. You were never negative to the "fat" community or anyone. NO ONE should be made to feel bad about taking accountability for their own body and own health. She made that video hoping to get people on her side and when it backfired, she turned off the like/dislike numbers so you can't even see them anymore. And I don't doubt she's deleting comments defending you. Please do NOT let any of this dissuade you, you do not exist on the internet to purely serve others and anything you do for your own health should never be seen like you're turning on your followers or anything. I have internally felt the same way about “body positivity” for quite sometime, but felt like I needed to believe in SOMETHING in order to move towards loving myself again.. you’re right though- you can be body positive and not ascribe to one of those belief systems. To be honest, any one of those layers quickly becomes toxic to your mental health if you use it as the rule by which you navigate living in the body of a plus sized woman. The great thing is.. we are so much bigger than our bodies and WE DON’T HAVE TO FIT IN THEIR BOX! 🤗 Thank you for being unapologetically yourself and sharing it with us. Girl i have unfollowed these so called “body positive” youtubers who are criticizing you. They are not body positive. You made a decision to improve your quality of life, to avoid chronic pain and health issues and I applaud you for being strong enough to do that and be upfront about it. 👏👏👏 Girl you nailed body positivity on the head. I know so many “thin” people who have horrible self image. Who get criticized for being to thin. The fat community has taken over this movement and made it theirs and it’s for EVERYONE! Love yourself and do what’s best for you. Your followers are here to support you. F the haters! ❤️💕

GIRL I literally just came from an @ObeseToBeast video and got randomly recommended your channel !! A big 'Hi💖' from your new subscriber/ instagram follower here!! Absolutely obsessed with your fashion sense and strong sense of self!! I'm not too high on the weight spectrum but definitely am trying to become healthier and change my lifestyle because of medical conditions (pre-arthritic knee joints at age 22 because of genetics😔😔). Your page literally helped give me so much clarity and perspective in finding a good balance between body positivity and making sure to treat the machine (my body and limbs) properly enough that I can at least stand up and walk to the bathroom on my own when I'm 45+ years old. Being shamed/teased when I try to do stairmaster or daily morning walks is something that I've def fought through and have realized is so much more valuable for me than the people whose attitude was bringing me down. Anybody that actively makes me feel bad or tries to stop me from saving my own life probably never had my best interest in mind in the first place. ILYSM girl you're just the baddest b** in the game ❤️⚡⚡

I'm so sorry that you were hurt by a community that you also (to many people) were consider a "representative" of. Thank you for being so real, and brave a honest with all of us. ❤️

  • @lynnryan3727

I tried being part of the community towards the beginning of it. It seemed like a good place, you know? I was recovering from anorexia and SH and wanted to be around people and ideals that would push me further into recovery and give me a good community and maybe friends as well through it.
Instead i was told i wasn't "fat enough", that i was "hijacking" a movement not meant for me, and degraded- even when i opened up about my ed being the reason i wanted to join the community- and my anorexia was just thrown in my face in so many ways. If i wasn't as far into my recovery as I was, I would have relapsed from that. I was told everything from i was lucky to struggle with anorexia to i should've died from it or my self harm. It is SUCH a warped community and a lot of people have such a warped mindset. The only acceptable bodies worthy of praise are bodies of a certain fatness. I'd even noticed some disabled people get side eyed from the "advocates".
The body positivity movement is a joke. Its largely no better than the counterpart, with the diet pills and skeletal figures on magazines and fat shaming. It's no better. They do not care to be positive, they do not care about health- as you've experienced. They want fat women to suffer silently solely for the comfort of those who look up to them, and they don't want "thin" people in the community or celebrating themselves no matter the reason or things they've overcome simply to be healthy.

I just watched this video on ObesetoBeast channel. I had to come here and “like” this video and tell you that you hit the nail on the head with all of this! Good for you for just focusing on YOU and your journey! I started following you a few years ago for your fashion hauls and even when I thought I would never wear that, I enjoyed seeing you trying on the many different styles and being self confident in the body you have. That’s something that’s taken me a long time to do. Body positivity to me is accepting and loving my body as it is right now and as it is IF I choose to change it. I don’t think I want to belong to a “community” especially because of all the things you pointed out. Keep being true to you and let the haters find somewhere else to go!

I learned about the BP community through obese to beast and I didn’t know how toxic it was. Smh. I though it was about accepting who you are as person, learn about your behaviors and environment that got you to high risk point and then slowly(marathon style) lose the weight to get a healthier weight(not a fitness model image). I guess it make sense there’s a dark side. There will always be polarizing views in every area of life. Just how there are negligent trainers in CrossFit there is also competent ones. Everyone wants to “pick a side”..some high school stuff. But it also seems that those who attack those that are trying to better themselves through weight loss ,are too focus on gaining more viewership/monetization than adding value to their community.
When someone attacks another person for making positive changes for healthier stronger version of themselves is a huge RED flag. Period.

No matter what size we are, it’s important to discuss collectively the things to do to improve ourselves and well being. It shouldn’t be about someone being upset because they chose to diet, or what fit wear they wore or why they have decided to take action to be healthier...but to view it openly and to possibly get that same motivation to do the same. It doesn’t matter if you lost a lb or not. It’s not about that. I’ve truly learned so much from you Anna that I tell everyone! You’re the smartest I know and I just love listening to you. 1. I’m actually not surprised that people are criticizing you, because those people are miserable people that don’t want to take accountability for their lives. They hate that you are actually so positive and comfortable in your skin, and they aren’t or they wouldn’t be such haters.
    2. You have such a beautiful and positive attitude and I’m glad I found your channel!

To me, body positivity means loving yourself and accepting the way you are in the moment. I recently lost 75lbs and when I was heavier I needed to accept who/how I was. I couldn’t move on with whatever path I was heading down if I didn’t stop to accept that I was even on a hike. I loved myself 75lbs heavier and I love myself now. I’ll love myself if I gain back some weight and if I loose more. So in the end, body positivity is embracing who you are and how you look while working on yourself no matter what that is.

I used to watch your videos years ago when I was really struggling with my body image. For some time a lot of my interests on UA-cam changed, but since I still follow Obese to Beast on here I saw the vid he made on you and remembered how I loved your vids and your personality.
I've just subscribed and added you on Instagram. Trying to have body positive influences on my feed is always so hard, because I feel it's either very fit people who just don't look like me or plus size people who deny that weight is an important factor when it comes to health for many people.
I am 100% here for any person of any size to be accepted and loved the way they are. To be happy and live their live to the fullest - but I also love seeing when everyone tries to look after themselves as best as they can. Not for everyone that means weight loss as a priority, but there is absolutely nothing wrong if it is for you! Every body is and everyone's needs are different and I'm so happy you are doing what is best for you!

Lots of wisdom and maturity in this video! It is so hard, but so important, to focus on the self. When the world is shouting at us from various directions, demanding we change according to THEIR desires, it can be so hard to do what is best for ourselves apart from outside influences. When you connect something with your identity, and then couple that with a community, and then you need to leave that behind... how much harder that becomes when that community, that was once so supportive, no longer wants you. And then it turns from something that built you up to something that tears you down, and becomes toxic.
Here is body positivity to me: no one's physical form is perfect. Everyone has flaws and imperfections. Everyone has scars, cellulite, pimples, wrinkles, discolourations, moles. Everyone has health issues of some kind - or will eventually. Body positivity is accepting that. Accepting that scar as a part of you and what you went through. Accepting blemishes as normal. And taking care of yourself, of your body, so that despite any health issues you may have you can still live as full a life as possible. Body positivity is getting some exercise and a good night sleep and drinking water and taking your medication and knowing that, yeah, that isn't going to make your illness go away, but it gives your body the best chance to deal with it.

  • @HereticHousewife

Anna, I navigated the same waters years ago. I'm sorry you're having to deal with this kind of messy "fatty vs fatty" drama, but you're doing just fine, and know that this particular conflict has been going on for decades within the "movement", whatever they're choosing to call themselves at any given time.
I was very deeply involved in the late 80s - early 00s size acceptance movement, the precursor to the modern body positivity movement. Before the internet existed and then during it's earlier years.
At one point, I developed a chronic medical condition that required lifestyle changes to help manage it. I didn't want to live with the symptoms any longer. The inflammation, the pain, the mobility loss, the weakness, and the fatigue. My life was becoming more limited and I didn't want that. So I took my doctor's advice and started eating a less processed and more whole food based diet and started doing structured exercise sessions.
Not just "eating intuitively and engaging in joyful movement" but actively following a diet to reduce systemic inflammation and following a scheduled exercise program with strength, flexibility, stamina, and mobility improvement goals.
Well, that didn't go over well in the size acceptance community, especially among certain more outspoken people. Even though I censored myself and was careful not to talk openly about it at official size acceptance events "or shove it down their throats" as they liked to say, I did talk about it openly to my close friends and on my personal early internet spaces. Also, the changes were obvious. At group events I ate differently than I used to, and my body started to change. A bit in size and shape, but mostly in my mobility and energy level. I started doing more things my size acceptance community friends didn't do.
And that got me labeled a "traitor", and "not body positive", "self loathing", "falling for the fat hating medical agenda", "and "engaging in self harm behaviors".
Which made me really angry because it wasn't even about any of them, this was me, engaging in body autonomy (something they had preached loudly and often) and doing what felt right to me regarding my own body. To feel better and have a less painful, more productive, and more fulfilling life. This wasn't about vanity, it was about life quality.
How dare they try and bully me and gaslight me into believing that I was harming myself. How dare they try and pressure and mind-game me into not trusting my personal physicians' judgement. And how dare they call me out, harass me, and badmouth me for doing something to improve my life.
So I just let them talk their talk and let the ones who were hostile towards me vent their spleen. And kept publicly repeating that this isn't about any of them, their personal choices, nor about the movement, this is all about me and my exercising bodily autonomy and doing what I believed I needed to do in order to have a better life. I refused to allow them to control me or censor me, and to be honest, it put me off of the whole movement. The community started to feel toxic to me, and I distanced myself from it.
Because if we're going to preach bodily autonomy, we can't put restrictions on what types of bodily autonomy are "correct" because then we just become the flip side of the oppression coin.
By telling people that their version of body autonomy is incorrect, you are oppressing them. And that behavior needs to be checked. It robs the movement of credibility. It's hypocritical and outsiders recognize that.

This took a lot of bravery, sis. I'm a plus-sized girl and agree with your version of body positivity. I'm sorry that you're going through so much trouble for speaking your truth.

You are so incredibly well spoken, and the fact that you even dare to put your two cents on the matter online is such an inspiration in and of itself! I think you hit the nail on its head and I hope you aren't negatively impacted by the response this video will probably get. Please take care of your mental health

Fatgirlflow’s video was very bizarre and she clearly missed the entire point of what you’re video was about! Just keep doing you, boo boo! I’m a plus size girl and I did not feel at all like you were shaming anyone WHATSOEVER, you were literally just discussing some lifestyle changes you decided to make to feel better overall

I love your videos. I am so tired of people bashing others for their weight, size, food choices, health choices, etc. You've put yourself out there in so many ways....I bet half of them aren't brave enough to do the same.

You’re so spot on. I don’t feel like I can relate to any of the “body positive” community.
Honestly I’m just striving for body neutrality and consistent self love. I think I could love myself without loving my body.
My body is an instrument not an ornament.
Also, I don’t have to identify as my body. The way my body looks doesn’t affect literally anything else in my life. It doesn’t affect my intelligence, talents, or self worth.

Thank you so much for sharing and being courageous enough to talk about this situation - I think it's a really important conversation that needs to be had (without shaming).

Yes Girl!!! You said what so many of us are thinking and talking with our friends about, and what has really been needed to say. This is why you are one of my favorite long distance online "girlfriends," who I can listen to, hear and see actual positive things from. You slayed this video!!!

To me body positive just means loving yourself and being confident with who you are. It doesn't mean that you can't work on or change certain things. It just means you love yourself. I bleach my hair blond. I don't hate myself because I have darker hair. I just like my hair blond.

Yes, truth. But some folks have to add layers and layers of drama to it. But I'm so in agreement of your definition.

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Yes! I consider myself body positive (not in the community sense though), because I truly believe we all need see ourselves and choose good for our bodies out of love, not out of self-loathing. Change is a good thing. It’s a product of love and growth. But can also look different for different people with different stories.

I'm so proud of you! The community you created loves you and we stand behind you no matter what size you are. I'm glad you spoke about this, i've always had such a problem with the "body positive as long as you look like me" community. Get it girl! You keep doing what you're doing and keep shining your light to the world! Luv Ya Lady!

I think part of the problem is that some people confuse change/ improvement/growth with self hate/loathing. They seem to miss/ignore that you can like and love yourself and be happy with yourself and still want to change, grow or improve in some way. Somehow when someone deliberately changes/ improves something about their body, a group of people seems to think the person doesn't love them self, because they change. However, no one doubts my self love if I want to follow a new bachelor degree. Which is of course also a deliberate change, improvement and attempt at growth.
It's a double standard that comes from insecurity. Those people are projecting. If they were truly completely okay with them self, they wouldn't feel the need to feel so threatened by someone else doing things differently then they do.

YOU ARE SPEAKING THE TRUTH!! Body positivity to me means to love your body no matter what it looks like/ is capable of. Doesn’t mean you have to be toxicly positive at all times it just means to show yourself love. I have been trying to lose weight almost my whole life for my health and now for my fertility as I have struggled with PCOS. And I try to love my body through it all. It should never mean to police others and shame them for wanting or trying to change their body. Why is it ok for people to gain weight but not to lose weight now?? I will never understand that. Weight is NONE of anyone’s business
