Cousin is a former Navy, he does the same thing. He said to do that before I go out if I can not have a waterbottle with me. I did it and holy sh # t. That was the first time I was able to watch my cartoons once home without running to the bathroom from outside all the way home. Dude... I am no longer scared of not having a bathroom to go to. I need to drink lots of water and this helps a lot. I just do not drink water sometimes (stress and just pressure) and my Cousin knew that and told me 😭 I cry for it helped me out. I'm less stressed now :D No worries I no longer experience what led me to not drink water. I have a bottle with me I drink from now at home.

Fun fact never approach a desert turtle because- since they drink so rarely- they store several months worth of water in them! So if a human frightens one by getting too close- you can cause the turtle to pee its whole water supply out in one go 😱🐢

And you're a good person for taking such care of your dog even when you were suffering. I can also attest that any beverage tastes amazing when you're hot, tired, and dehydrated, haha. The true answer is if you go hiking alone or with others be prepared for the worst case case scenario. Hiking and backcountry camping are and inherently a risky activities, and they get risker the more remote you go. However, there are things you can do to mitigate that risk. I'm don't hike in desert areas so I don't know additional advice for that situation but in general:
      1. I cannot stress this enough, tell someone where you are going, when you intend to be back, and who they should call if you haven't contacted them by a certain time (local Police, park service, or local search and rescue are typical options but it will vary by the area). If you're in a national/provincial/state park you can usually leave a trip plan with the place you got your park permit and for long trips they sometimes make you submit one. Even for shorter hikes at the very least text a friend the above info so someone knows if something went wrong.
      2. Follow your trip plan (the one you have sent to someone else). I get that it's boring but play it safe and stay with the plan you made so that if something goes wrong someone can find you. Some more experienced people will ignore this one, but they also probably have a Sat phone and 2000$ worth of gear just in case something goes wrong.
      3. Wear the right gear for the terrain (the number of people climbing mountains in flipflops kills me). If you don't know what the right gear is go to an outdoor store like REI (or your local business equivalent) and ask them what to get. The staff at those kind of stores tend to be gear heads and they will be able to tell you. There are also online resources with info for most terrains.
      4. Assume you will get stranded for 24h and bring the bare minimum to not die. A list of general bare minimum stuff: a rain cover if that's a risk, water (if there isn't a source 2-5L depending on the terrain, more is fine, less is not), enough food to have energy to move, warm layers for if it gets cold, shade for if it gets hot, a basic first aid kit. For areas with a source of fresh water some water purification tablets or a filter like a lifestraw will work and reduce the water you need to carry.
      5. If there is any question about you making it back by the time it is safe (be that dark or noonday sun) turn around. You can come back another time.
That's a good primer. There are of course other details specific to different terrains, or personal preferences, but this comment is long enough already.

You don't really know how deadly the heat can be until you find yourself in this type of situation. My husband and I were at Arches National Park in Utah in the summer. We were hiking to one of the more challenging hikes. I really wanted to go, but as we walked, I started feeling like I was baking from the inside out and I also noticed that I wasn't sweating anymore. We turned around and I am so glad we did. You were amazing to find a way to survive through sheer determination.

You were in the stages of hyperthermia hun. It’s terrifying. As someone who gets heatstroke very easily, make sure the night before a hike you chug about a gallon of water. Will you wake up to pee? Yes. But the consequences of not doing so are terrifying. I’m so so sorry you had to go through that. It’s horrific. I’ve passed out so many times and I even passed out and peed myself once. My internal temp was at 105 and I woke up in the ER in an ice bath. Please take care of yourself❤️

First, I'm so glad you're safe. Second, as a lifelong hiker I disagree with the people commenting that you should never hike alone. Sure, you can never entirely eliminate every single risk, but if you know the terrain (if not familiar with the area, research this beforehand), keep an eye on the weather report, have outdoor navigation skills and - especially in hot temperatures - carry more water than you think you'll need, it's usually perfectly fine to go hiking alone. The drive to the trail head is generally a lot more dangerous than the hike itself. Hope this experience has not put you off hiking. Happy trails!

My husband had Alzheimer's and he was going somewhere but he got confused and somehow got off the main road and ended up on an extremely seldom traveled gravel road. This road went through a mostly dry creek bed and when he tried to drive through the creek bed his car got stuck and he could not get out. He got out of the car to walk for help but he fell and could not get back up. He laid there half in the water and half out of the water for 48 hours. A family was vacationing and they were riding horses up the creek bed and they saw him and immediately called an ambulance for him and gave him a bottle of water. When you talked about how delicious the Mountain Dew was it reminded me of his story. He told me that bottle of water they gave him was the best tasting stuff he had ever tasted.
Thanks for sharing this incredible story with us. What a horrible end to your hike. I'm glad you managed to make it out despite all the wrong turns you took and the shortage of water you were experiencing. Be careful!

Especially when you are very overweight it's important not to put too much pressure on your body, you risk injuring yourself, i learnt that the hard as i did mostly running to lose weight and it did some damage to my joints. It's easy to get carried away when you start feeling better and getting generally healthier you can sometimes overdo it. For future reference the plain water also probably contributed to your heat exhaustion. Because contrary to popular belief salt is actually super vital especially in regards to hydration because it keeps the water inside you instead of out. Because you sweat sodium out and so if you don't take it in at the same or similar rate, the water will stop being absorbed into your body and cause problems that way. That's why when you're in hospital you get saline when getting hydration and not just steril water. That's why Gatorade and similar drinks work so well when exercising, they keep the balance of water and salt so your body doesn't malfunction. Now I'm not a hiker or anything, but I do have POTS and this is how I manage my symptoms so they're not as bad.

    • @happydayz7857

      What is POTS?

    • @crimsonrose4648
      @crimsonrose4648 4 роки тому +13

@@happydayz7857 it stands for postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome. Basically when you stand up normally your veins in your lower extremities tighten up and push the blood to your brain and increases your blood pressure so your heart only has to work slightly harder to pump your blood to your brain. But with POTS the veins are either not able to construct for whatever reason or your nervous system doesn't communicate efficiently which causes blood to go to your feet instead of your brain, forcing your heart to work much harder and decreasing blood pressure upon standing, causing you to faint/pass out. It's worse in the heat because of your body's natural method of cooling down is by dialating blood vessels.

Hate to tell you but high heat isn't in the morning in Utah (or Nevada where I used to live) but it's between 1-4 pm. If the temp is telling you that it's 107 in town, when you're on those rocks add another 10 degrees because of the color. If they'd been black, you'd have been in the hospital because the heat reflects back to you and it would have been so hot, you'd probably pass out. The sandstone you were in is only marginally better. Glad you made it out of there and remember to take twice the amount of water you think you'll need and extra sunscreen. Yeah, grew up in that area and can remember coming home one day from the pool as a 12 year old when I decided to cut through the desert. Almost passed out and learned a valuable lesson about the heat, water and what I was capable of. It's a hard lesson but well worth it and it guarantees that you won't do it again. One other thing, always let someone know when you hike in the desert especially when you're alone. You can call the locals ranger station or even a friend, who knows to check in with you in an hour or two. Just saying - that's one thing I had to learn when I got my geology degree and had to walk the desert - we weren't allowed to go anywhere if we didn't let someone else know our plans.

Wow! What a scary experience! I used to live in St. George and that heat is No Joke! Plus, this year all over Utah,(where I still live, in Salt Lake City) we have had higher temperatures than usual. I’m SO thankful you are alive to tell us this amazing story. I’m so sorry you went through that, but your message is one we all need to hear sometimes, that when it truly comes down to it, we do have to save ourselves, especially when applied to weight loss. Nobody can do it for us (dang it!) even if we have an amazing support system. I’m glad you got to come and enjoy our beautiful state and National parks, hopefully you can come back and have an even better experience in the future!💖💖💖

Wow girl, you should be proud of yourself. As soon as you got where you could get a signal you should have dialed 911. First responders are use to those calls and would rather come help you than to get a call you are unconscious or worse. Hot Mt. Dew...yuck...but I am glad you had it. Always over prepare with water and I am sure you know now you need a buddy with you on hikes of that nature.

@@cathyskywalker77 animals can't comprehend the things that we can. They are not smart and they lack insight into things. If a dog dies other dogs don't care that much. They also contribute little to society and if they do it's only because of humans. I can tell you most likely do not have children. Do you have any relationship with your parents? Would you save a cat or a dog over them? Are you vegan? If not then what's the difference between you eating a dog, a cat or a pig?

That deep sand.... you walked into a wash. It’s a dry creek bed. These flood during monsoon season. Water comes rushing down super fast out of nowhere. Never go into a “wash”. Very dangerous. Then there’s heat stroke. While beautiful, the desert 🌵 can be deadly. Happy you hiked Moab. I’m heading out there too. Zion, Arches, Bryce.
Crazy scary experience. There were no other hikers? You’re very lucky. Hiking in the desert alone is like swimming alone. Not to be done. Always have a partner. I assume you got lost, of trail? Wow! Glad you made it out.

I’m so happy you’re ok! Cannot imagine how scary this must have been. I’m glad you told this story. Hiking is one of these activities that really does require training and preparation. Especially when hiking in unfamiliar areas. This could happen to anyone, so no shame. Just a good reminder there are items that would make trips like this safer for people who are less familiar with the trails, but are still useful for trails that are familiar to the hiker and just in every day hiking life. Always, always, always have a map of the area you’re hiking and familiarize yourself with how to navigate using maps. This can save your life. If you don’t trust your ability to read a map (ME), purchasing a dedicated GPS device is a must. Even this type of device may have troubles in certain places which is why having a map is still important. Don’t eff with nature. If something doesn’t feel right, don’t just forge ahead. Better to turn around and go back than to dig yourself into an even deeper mess. Honestly, we’re all here to learn and enjoy the outdoors, that sometimes requires being wrong and making mistakes (that hopefully don’t turn out too badly). It’s so so important to know our boundaries and to get ok with admitting in the moment when there are things we physically cannot do. (Yet!) This is something I personally struggle with. Here’s to working on ourselves and getting stronger every day.
Im adding my two cents about the end of this video not to try and take away from your lesson, because I think what you’re saying at the end is important, but to help others who may take guidance from this discussion. Based on the info that was presented, anyone who gets into a situation like this should seek medical attention as quickly as is humanly possible. While I am very glad you’re ok and I think it is certainly inspirational and a huge call to believe in ourselves and our bodies and what we’re capable of if we really try, you are making a very serious health claim. Severe dehydration often requires more than just oral fluid resuscitation, some people will need IV fluids. Obviously I wasn’t there, maybe there were no medical facilities that you could reasonably get to, but in general this situation certainly seems to have warranted medical attention. My advice to anyone watching and reading the comments - If you’re getting into hiking, and this happens to you, get to the nearest medical professional.

they’re expensive but i highly highly suggest getting a Garmin or any satellite communicator like it! my mom got one after breaking her ankle on a trail and realizing if my friend hadn’t been there she easily would’ve died.
it has both a gps and texting capabilities that don’t rely on signal the same way phones do so no matter where you are you can send an emergency text to people to get you help.
my mom uses it regularly to text where she’s at on her trail and at what time every half hour or so to keep us updated in case anything happens.
i’m glad you made it out okay! i’m proud of you.

Bring a bottle of Gatorade or Powerade with you next time or those little electrolyte replenishing packets that you can put in water. Prolonged periods of sweating (you're loose the sodium in your body via sweat) without replenishing your electrolytes will make your dehydration worst quicker.

So glad you’re okay! It’s crazy how heat can hit you - I just had a scary experience yesterday. I recently moved to Texas and am not used to the dry intense heat. My spouse and I decided to hike a 5 mile trail up a mountain. It was intensely hot on the way up, but once we got there it felt worth it - beautiful views. We didn’t have water at this point but I figured no biggie since it was downhill. It turned out that it was 103 out and no shade and no moisture, and I started to become intensely dizzy and nauseated around halfway down. I didn’t say anything and kept walking but my skin began getting chills and my vision was altered and body had multiple waves were I was almost certain I’d pass out. It was scary and happened so quickly, but I was with someone. When we got to water I almost started vomiting after drinking, and my temperature seemed altered the rest of the day. After that, I really can imagine how truly scary that must have been with no service and being alone. Heat can make even a short hike dangerous, and I see that now.

For all the people saying "Never go hiking alone!".... That is BULLSHIT! You can absolutely go hiking by yourself, you just have to be smart about it and do it with more precautions. Rarely do people say that to men. And in this situation, how would TWO lost and overly dehydrated people have helped this situation? The one thing she should have learned is to always hike with offline maps of the trails/areas she was going to hike, to think about investing in a satellite communicator in case of emergencies, and always hike with 3x more water then you think you need (2L min).
Anna... you're a beast! Stay that way girl! 😀
