Kirk is awesome. I have great reverence for him. He may not be the best guitar player out there but he is a good and humble person. He is doing what he likes and has contributed to some of most memorable guitar solos and riffs of all time. He is playing in the biggest, most influential and one of the greatest bands of all time. And last but not least people are paying to see them live.

For as much documentation as there is for Metallica's live performances there are going to be moments like this. What's funny is that, as someone who has never heard this song before, I could not tell that he "failed" the solo. The only way he failed the solo is that he didn't play the studio version. Which I guess is a valid point, but saying he failed implies his guitar playing was bad. But his playing sounds great for the tempo of this song. I mean yeah, it sounds about like a lead guitarist in a bar band that didn’t learn all the catchy licks correctly, but knows where they go so you get this half-assed version with a few artistic decisions made to it. Do I hate when a bar band does that? Not really. It just sounds like another guy putting his stamp on it. Does it seem shameful that the legendary guitarist doesn’t seem to remember what he did in the studio version? Yeah, I guess a little bit. The energy is there though. It wasn’t as intense as the album version and there were some cheese ball licks, but I can appreciate him trying different things when he can. There are so many other songs where he has to completely stick to the script like: One, Enter Sandman, The Unforgiven, etc. When you really pay attention to Kirk he’s really more into jamming than preparing and playing a well orchestrated catchy guitar solo. I used to think that he became that way after Load era, but really he’s always been that way. I get that from not just stories from Metallica interviews, but even people like Les Claypool who grew up with him. His favorite guitarists aren’t guys like Randy Rhodes or Eddie Van Halen it’s guys like Peter Green and Santana. So he goofs on a lesser hit from the Black Album. Watch him on a jam oriented one from Load like Bleeding Me. He’s more in his element when he can experiment. …Sorry, that’s my two cents.

I personally admire Kirk, but this was awful, being in a band myself I would be very frustrated if I butchered any riff or solo, then again, we all haven’t being playing for over 40 years, music takes it’s toll. I think we can learn a lot from this. Always try to be better, accept criticism and don’t be a prick about it, it goes for both ways. Practice. Practice. Practice.

Do I hate when a bar band does that? Not really. It just sounds like another guy putting his stamp on it. Does it seem shameful that the legendary guitarist doesn’t seem to remember what he did in the studio version? Yeah, I guess a little bit. The energy is there though. It wasn’t as intense as the album version and there were some cheese ball licks, but I can appreciate him trying different things when he can.
There are so many other songs where he has to completely stick to the script like: One, Enter Sandman, The Unforgiven, etc. When you really pay attention to Kirk he’s really more into jamming than preparing and playing a well orchestrated catchy guitar solo. I used to think that he became that way after Load era, but really he’s always been that way. I get that from not just stories from Metallica interviews, but even people like Les Claypool who grew up with him. His favorite guitarists aren’t guys like Randy Rhodes or Eddie Van Halen it’s guys like Peter Green and Santana. So he goofs on a lesser hit from the Black Album. Watch him on a jam oriented one from Load like Bleeding Me. He’s more in his element when he can experiment.

Why they play this song in D standard instad of D# or half step tuning?
Average songs they tune half step down. So all E tunings goes to D sharp. The god that failed originaly in D sharp. so they tuned it half step down as others songs performed life

I personally admire Kirk, but this was awful, being in a band myself I would be very frustrated if I butchered any riff or solo, then again, we all haven’t being playing for over 40 years, music takes it’s toll. I think we can learn a lot from this. Always try to be better, accept criticism and don’t be a prick about it, it goes for both ways. Practice. Practice. Practice.
