I took a painting class in San Jose, CA. I kept scraping off the Grand Tetons until the teacher said, “It takes two people to paint a picture, one to paint it and the other to hit the artist over the head when the painting is finished”.😊
I love this! Great job, Ceri. So glad I found you. Interesting note about post-its. An engineer/scientist was given the job of finding a specific kind of glue. He ended up with this glue that would stick and could be removed without leaving a trace. He made post-its and made his pitch for production. He was turned down bc who would use it? He made a bunch and had his assistant/secretary give them out to all the secretaries, especially those of the execs who turned him down. The post-its were a hit with the secretaries. When they ran out, they asked for more. They were directed to their bosses b/c there were no more and there was no permission to make more. Now we have post-its. 🥰 I heard this story some time ago so some of the details might be sketchy, but the gist is right. Moral of the story: if you want something done, ask a secretary. Secretaries rule!
I did watch all the way to the end. I think this is absolutely wonderful and also "just right." Doesn't need another mark. I love grid journaling and I too have been inspired by Kellee, BB and Jackie. And now you, Ceri. Grid journaling to me is much like Shannon Green's Journaling by Fives, from about six years ago, where you take one process and do it on 20 pages in 15 minutes. Then the next process on all 20 pages for 15 minutes. Lots of fun and gets the thinking brain completely out of it. Really freed me up in my art. As does grid journaling. A lot of folks use it as a springboard to other art pieces, but for me, grid journaling is a worthy end in itself. I love it. -- Barbara Clark
Funny, I have been getting a glimpse of several grid projects online and thought I might like to tackle that myself. I love, love, love the results of your efforts. I really am going to have to give it a go now! Thanks for the inspiration.
How I enjoy watching you growth Ceri.❤ I started with digital grids (have some shorts about it), 2 days ago a cut a grid stencil and did my first hand made one. IGrid journaling is and adventure in itself and a very fulfilling one
Wonderful video Ceri! I want to give you a "well done" for continuing to step out of your comfort zone on your road to letting go of perfectionism. This is a very fun way to journal.
Thank you for this Ceri! I'm a long time subscriber and I've ALWAYS felt that we are very similar in the ways we think and work creatively. Only I'm still struggling to let go and trust the process. The perfectionist in me is strong!! But, I also do not give up on things when I find them interesting enough to try. I commend you for sharing this process with us! Thank you for being you!
I haven't tried this technique yet. I've seen it done and will try eventually. Some of my work is when there no thinking just listen to music and do what comes to me at the time. I live your videos and your work!
It was fun to watch your version of this. I’ve only done it before with taped off squares. After everything dries the tape is removed leaving the even white lines between all the boxes. It’s a different sort of challenge when you have to stay inside the box on your own.
Grid journaling has been creeping into my feed, too. I am intrigued, but I want to do circles or “bubbles” on a page. I think a grid of 2 inch circles would be fun as I further explore watercolors or maybe some gel plate collage. We shall see. I love the way you did your experiment.
This sort of abstract, random process is SOOOOOO far beyond me. My brain just will not let me do it. So I feel your pain. Congratulations on completing the pages.
I was not sure where you were going when you started this process because I have this compulsion about symmetry when drawing, painting, or even doodling but the outcome was great! I loved the color choices and the little added details with the tissue paper and stamping brought it all together. ☺👍 Another great idea to give a try. Have a wonderful week!
I like it a lot Cerry . My daughter make grids and doodle in it. It is beautiful. I think that wat you do inside how simple, colourful or busy it is the grid frames it and bring a sort of cohesive, what is pleasant for the eye. Greats Simone
You are the dearest man Ceri. I too struggle with “straight”. It’s hard for me to just “do it freely”. My perfectionism is always shouting in my ear. Thank you for taking us along on your journey. ❤
May I recommend to you the essays of Danny Gregory over there on Sketchbook Skool? I had lost all my interest and fun in beeing creative because my inner Monkey wouldn't shut up. This Channel really helped me to get loose again and start having fun again. I now am less critical about what i create. Or lets say less destructive.
oooh! exciting first time i've caught one so soon after it was uploaded. You are helping me so much on my first journey into making journals. Thank you! Now that i got to watch some of it I would like to say thats why i want to do a travers journal style book. that way i can have signatures for each of my crafts and i can bounce between what i need and want.
How interesting. A bit of a different concept but one that looks like fun. I just had another pop up with one that is titled "Testing new art supplies on a mixed media grid art journal page" by Lindsay Weirich, thefrugalcrafter. Now I'll have to check out more of these. I'd done something similar when I took a couple collage classes from Catherine Rains, one in '23 and one this year. We made the papers so they would coordinate, something like what you are doing. It can stretch you, but it can also be very fulfilling and fun as well. I'll have to peek at what you linked too.
Oh, my gosh, Ceri! That second square down on the far left looks like a dolphin! I LOVE this process! Thank you, Ceri, for another wonderful tutorial/demo. Love you! ~Kathy in California ❤🧡💛😊
Very nice, Ceri. I'm glad you decided to try again 😊 I haven't tried this yet. Plan to. I like Margarite Miller's style of grid, but I really like the color you added to yours 🧡 Oh! Great buy on your paper!
It was so much fun watching you do this. I have been on a crafting dry spell. I have done a few grid journaling and you just put a spark under me to do another and hopefully it will get me motivated to get in the groove . Thanks so much for sharing,
I can see why gridding jump starts the imagination for artists. These mini collages turned out so cool.😊 Thank you for sharing your insightful artistic journey! 🫶
This is awesome ~ so beautiful! Your theme paper is gorgeous. I have laughed through this video, sharing snippets with my husband because you are me and hearing someone verbalize my - sometimes subconscious - thoughts on process, systems, balance & boundaries is eye-opening and hilarious. I admire you for trying to break free of a mold. Definitely following you.🙂
Interesting concept. Finding myself leaning more and more into this (new to me) concept of mixed media. This idea is like making miniature play areas to .... well, just play. Especially to play with mediums/media that I'm still discovering. Thank you for sharing your thinking/process. Diolch yn fawr iawn! 🥰
watching all the artist's you listed led me to you... grid #44... Love yr patter as ii can so relate, yet all the ones ii learn with/from start & finish from joy, not inner bullying... critiquing or editing is opposite condemnation... as a wannabe abstract art maven who blends zentangle, watercolor, collage, inks, acrylics & often am challenged to work bigger, grids as a shape allow me the freedom to go crazy within borders, & also find combinations & color palettes iinwouldnt have tried., as well as coloring outside the lines. The jackies remind me to press thru ugly stages, and love the process regardless of the outcome, to come back later, however long that may be, and let the piece tell me what it needs... ty for being authentically you.
I’ve started noticing in my grids there’s normally one square or rectangle that stands out for me and I could use that to create a bigger piece of art.
Good evening dear Ceri, this grid journal, painting is so fabulous! Such a freeing way to create. Love this! Thank you so much for sharing this technique, thanks for all your suggestions and talking your process. Something new for me to try. Hugs and blessings 💙🙏

Ceri, you would be surprised what the tiniest shred of that Tim Holtz paper will add to a collage. I literally had an eighth of an inch that I added to a collage because it was on my table and it’s too expensive to waste. I loved it. Or, you prob do know. I was looking at the blank grid bit. That would be nice.
I love Jackie and BB. You are my art soulmate 😂 I too love working in different journals depending on how I feel that day. I started grid journaling after watching Jackie and gosh what an eye opening experience, I love it especially when I in a creative rut! By the way, you did a good job on the grid 😊
They turned out pretty good! I can't bring myself to try this. For some reason everything within me wants to run the other way. I do love looking at other people's results though.
I found this very interesting. Never heard of this type of Journaling. Looks like a lot of fun. But I'm also OCD and a perfectionist, so I'd like to give this a go to learn not to be. Well done. Love your videos. 💯👏
It’s hard to let go however I viewed the end result as perfect for where I am at on my grid journal journey and that helped me accept it. Knowing I can grow from there.
I bought (2nd hand) a series of scrapbooking 12 x 12 pockets that have grids in various sizes with pre cut cards to go in the pockets. I have filled it with my art instead. I am going to do some that include photos of the grandkids in their own albums so it becomes a blend of my art with scrapbooking their growing lives. I haven’t heard of anyone doing that but hey why not? Love your work!
Ceri, I have a bad “perfection” problem too. For example ,I would have taken the first piece of book page and torn it into 12 mostly equal parts and every box would’ve had one 😂.

Yup I’ve played with Zines however they are just a bit too small for me, I’d rather make a set of Artist Trading Cards if I’m going to work that small.
You could also use low tack tape and tape off the grid if you didn't want to draw the boxes. The reveal when you take the tape off is always the best bit!

Thank you, Ceri. I really like how these came out, as well. It was fun to see your process.

Funny, I have been getting a glimpse of several grid projects online and thought I might like to tackle that myself. I love, love, love the results of your efforts. I really am going to have to give it a go now! Thanks for the inspiration.

Yes and I love it. I combined it with daily (bullet) journaling ❤
Great idea
Wonderful video Ceri! I want to give you a "well done" for continuing to step out of your comfort zone on your road to letting go of perfectionism. This is a very fun way to journal.
Thank you so much
I love it! This is something i like to do a lot. Don’t think just play ❤
I have done this before with watercolors and I used quarter inch painters tape to separate the squares.
Thank you
I love what you did with your grid. Adding the words and numbers made it look like artistic comic strips. ❤
