As a KBM player, the day I learned that Evample used KBM and was pulling off the insane shots and mechanics that he does was the day that I put to rest any idea that KBM was inferior to controllers.
KBM is different, and you could argue more difficult to learn due to the more limited information regarding mechanical guides, but I don't see why you couldn't get to the very highest levels of skill if you put in the work just like anybody else.

Im a KBM player and i'm GC. I met quite a few KBM GC's in the european servers. I think the only real disadvantage i noticed since i started in 2016 is that i cant just take my skills to my friends house and their console becouse using a controller puts me back into diamond and im not willing to relearn everything with controller. You talking about for example space not being jump was the first thing I changed when I started up rocket league. I changed the controls so they would be the same as in other games and ended up not needing the mouse at all.
That makes me only keyboard player. I wonder how many people did the same and what would be the demographics on that lol

Very well thought out video that takes a dive into ideas and questions I had as a keyboard player. I've always felt that my shooting was some what held back by kbm due to its lack of input. I've been playing on kbm for 2k hours and I'm more of a mechanical player. This makes it difficult for me to switch to controller. Regardless, I've been making improvements recently that have kept me optimistic for the future. No one has made a video talking about this subject so I'm glad to see it being picked up by you. Another thing to consider is the dexterity and button coverage. By moving just a single digit for 360 degrees of movement, the other fingers can be more dedicated to their muscle memory inputs. The analogue level of control also makes the game feel more intuitive even if it can cause more delay, the bigger picture is that it may make it feel more 'connected' to the player. Factoring in the mouse and the 'clicky' soft nature of most mice, as well as the very sensitive nuance with movement - it can be a hard hurdle to overcome in terms of focus. We all have a fixed amount of focus at any given time which is split between our conscious and sub-conscious, which is why the less you have to 'think' about reacting to, or implementing mechanics for, the better you actually react and play. Much like learning to block in martial arts with slower motions at the early stages interspersed with quicker motions, to then having years of experience and simply 'reacting' quickly on instinct. As you rightly said, the underlying success values lie in the tactical processing and consistency of players, this is where most of ones focus ideally would be. Its also why its common to spiral on a losing streak when overthinking mistakes.
I learned to play with a controller to begin with, then I re-trained around Plat/Diamond to hold the controller with four fingers on each shoulder button. Developed literal hand cramps at first. But this allowed me to do more with less and I jumped up mechanically and reactively. this was despite playing with just two fingers on the shoulder buttons all my life for other games (well controllers didn't even have shoulder buttons when I was a kid! Looking at you Master System/Amstrad).
As always, your videos are the type of analysis I subscribed for! Keep up the good work man!

Lol I noticed this same limitation for controller. I considered switching to 4 fingers in the triggers but it just feels weird to me cuz I have 15,000 hours of controller experience never doing that. So I instead switcher my right thumb grip from always being on A/X (only 1 button) to on both A/X and X/Square. My mechanics-especially flip resets, wave dashes, and air rolling while in the air is way cleaner now.
So I switched my controls to this:
Left Stick: Accelerate, reverse, air roll left.
      LB/L1: Air roll/powerslide
      RB/R1: Boost
      X/Square: Jump
      A/X: Air roll right
      Y/Triangle: Ball cam
      LT/L2: Rumble

I'm a keyboard player because I've simply never liked controllers. While I immediately reckoned controller would be "better", I just have infinitely more muscle memory on a keyboard. I remember purchasing a controller for For Honor and ending up playing keyboard and mouse anyway. However, while I still think controller is technically better due to the octodirectional limitation of keyboard, the notion that you would be capped due to playing keyboard is ridiculous. Practically no one is good enough to utilize the additional finesse. This is evident in the freestyle scene, where you'd think people wanted the most control possible.

played since alpha and spent about 1300 hours KBM, that was the first time i considered switching. After trying to commit to the switch for a few weeks i realized controller is so much more precise (Specifically easy to be precise compared to KBM) that after all i had learned, i would fundamentally need to re learn how to play the entire game, because every time i moved forward in KBM it was full power, every button press was. It was S or S D , Not a true 38% diagonal. Over time i had learned to have proper timing with KBM controls. And now im more than confident traveling into a new season with controller players. KBM i agree would be way harder to learn for a controller player, But as is with controller has hidden advantages that only become clear when you reach a higher level.

For example: if you want to do this flip to the left you use a,w,q, and w,d,e for the right

  • @lukeihrig

Keyboard and mouse players can’t do everything controller players can. For example they can only get 45 degree speed flips which is not the optimal angle. They also cannot utilize dynamic air roll which is a fairly new concept that zen has used which requires putting your directional air roll bind on a trigger instead of a bumper/button. It allows you to change the speed of your directional air roll.

As a keyboard player I can tell you the only thing that prevents us from doing as well as controller...
We're not able to adjust input lag with mouse and keyboard. Like you said, it's all or nothing.
But wait, you say! There is a setting that allows delay on keypress! 0.10 0.15 0.20! YOU HAVE IT KEYBOARD PLAYER?! What you talk'n about?
And you're correct. We do have that but guess what? We don't want to be slowed down while driving with our wheels are on the ground. We still want our left and right to be fast. And by adjusting the input delay you do allow for better control in the air but now you're slower on the ground.
    The fix?
Simple. Give keyboard players an AIR keyboard press delay and a GROUND keyboard press delay.
    And that's the main difference.
Controllers can adjust air sensitivity independently from ground movement where as K&M players can not (without jacking up their ground game).

Personally I'm a kbm player who has been hard stuck Champ 1 for 9 months now. I think people just use switching from kbm as an excuse for the roadblock. For me I know it's not my mechanics bc my Xbox account (I have 15 hours on controller) is the exact same rank as my kbm account ( 1.6K hours), granted I get considerably less fps on my kbm account (40 max) so that is probably a main factor, but game sense is also a huge factor. All in all I think people shouldn't be so quick to find a reason for their slump or being hardstuck, if they have decent mechanics, it is their game sense holding them back.

  • @DrewskiCS2

A new problem arrives for keyboard though as zen air roll left setting allowing from dynamic airroll by binding it to the l2 trigger on controller is not possible on keyboard as you said keyboard can't does not have analog sensitivity its all or nothing which makes this new bind literally impossible for keyboard as the trigger on a controler can be pressed lighted in order to airroll slower which improves control and can provide better light touches its a level of control keyboard players will never be able to reach because of that fact and if it becomes the meta as predicted keyboards may become completely non viable at a high level which sucks for the skilled kbm players out there

I came back to the game about a month ago, using quite crappy controller and lanuching epic games launcher via steam and launchung rocket league from that just to get controller working because wasn't here before f2p, so I'm pretty sure most f2p players use this method to play with non xbox controller to feel like they have a more fair chance in ranked.

KBM GC2 here. It's definitley possible. I play basically every game out there with KBM just cuz I don't really like controller. Never got used to using one. Rocket League is a bit weird playing on keyboard but definitely doable. While precision and such is definitely harder, I actually find most mechanics way easier on KBM. However, that does depend on the player itself tho I guess. I would say it's harder to learn certain mechanics but easier to master them imo. Still, would I recommend playing on KBM? Probably not. Is it possible to achieve higher ranks with KBM? Absolutely.

Kbm lacks in control in precision when compared, one way to overcome that difference might be to give the ability to bind multiple aspects of control to a single button, like i have a button that does jump, one that does boost, one tilts my car backwards, but i would also like a 3rd that does jump, boost and tilting backwards all at the same time
This way it would be good use of the hving so many keys in front of you most of which do nothing
(Try not dissect my example please lol , it is just there to explain, ik it's bad)

The game is fixed with inline algorithms, the main source of this fix is based on the algorithms which determine your playability whilst online, using the conventions of CSTS (Continuous Sim Time Scaling) and STS (Sim Time Scaling) which determine, and predict key presses within the game. They say this is to control the network latency but in fact, the control of key inputs and registry of these inputs are solely in the discretion of the server and its algorithm. This why only a small percentage of players ever reach SSL and majority of players hang between the Plat, Diamond ranges. The game has been specifically designs to only allow a certain percentage of players to become SSL, Grand Champion, etc keep the majority within the middle tiers for extra income and Hugh revenue profits. Now, nobody would play the game, if all players reach SSL, this is their strategy and this why, you lose games and your rank changes dramatically, unless you're a select few within the Top Tier, of GC3 or SSL.

    • @NorthstarUK
      @NorthstarUK  Рік тому

With alittle perseverance you could just emulate the steps in a controller guide to get the desired outcome. I've done that many times for many mechanics. But that's just another barrier between you and understanding the mechanic that a controller player doesn't have. It's a sort of alienation that pushes players away from KBM in the long run.

    • @JohnAndJohner
      @JohnAndJohner Рік тому +1

A lot of air roll guides involve some degree of moving the stick gradually from one location to another, whereas a keyboard player will have to adapt that into some degree of, for example, WD-D-SD, which is both less intuitive and also a three step process instead of a gradual process.

I use kbm. I have never tuched a controler. I bought one anyways and like expected i hate it. Kbm or controler is to mi, just a chois. Both have advantages and disatvantages.
I mean freestilers have prooved that u can perform meccanics with kbm. And pros like Torsos have prooved that u can be pro with kbm. So the fact that almost no one is playing with kbm, ist just coz its not popular. Everyone waches a pro play and see they use controler, so they do it too. If for some reason the oposite is true then controler would not be popular. The biggest problem like illustrated in the video is accuracy, but also that is not too hard to overcome. All u have to do is know how to position and time it and u got to be good a taping yea. Its just different to controler, realy. Thats mi opinion. But nice vid and acurate description.

Fruity reitred, Yukeo seems to be close to fading out, stake is relevant on twitch but hasn't been showing any results in the grand scheme, zenoulous is trying to stay relevant in oceania, but pretty much kbm is wiped from the rlcs scene...except for LCT on gamin gladiators but they get knocked out pretty quick.
