This is EXACTLY the video I needed today. The stupid thing was so stuck, we put some rust eater stuff on it that’s meant for automotive stuff. Hubby has a rusty Michigan 4Runner he uses that stuff on… that helped. It’s called PB Blaster. Thank you for making this tutorial!
This does work, thank you. Before I attempted this I ran a quick wash cycle with hot water only and 1 cup of citric acid. I bought the spring pullers on Amazon. I had to lay it against the concrete and smack it with a hammer to thin out the hook part so it would slip in between the agitator and the barrel. I got two screwdrivers in and tugged on the third portion of the agitator. I also tapped the center/shaft periodically with the rubber mallet. I think I read a comment saying there has to be another way. There might be, but this does work for about 8 bucks..
Thanks for the video. Just did this and I found that using the hooked end of a church key (paint can opener) works great to get in the tight space and then use flathead screwdrivers or a dull chisel to keep the lip up. A couple light pops with the hammer is a big help too!
thank goodness you added the hammer trick to your video. I used 3 flat tip screwdrivers and a paint can opener, still would not come off, hit with a hammer a few times and out it came. thanks so much.
I tried boiling water, CLR, PB Blaster, citric acid, freeze-off, i took two tie downs and put under and attached to a 2x4 and did this over 3 days on and off, a shoe string, and nothing worked at all. I finally thought why am i going through all this work and it's only $26 for a new washplate on Amazon. So I ordered a new one and took the hammer to it. Even getting the few pieces stuck to the gear was a huge pain. It was like it was welded on. There was no way this was coming off any other way. Only wish I would have done it earlier.
I took a small allen wrench and a pair of vicegrips to make that hook like device. But I think it was the light taps around the top that really helped me get it off
Thank you. I did not need the hook, but I did used your idea of putting screw drivers around. So I started with a thinner flat head screw driver to lift the edge, then stick a thicker screw driver. I went around to 4 points then hit with a hammer. The wash plate flew off. Once again thanks for the idea.
Yup mine broke in the center from light taps of a rubberized Cresent wrench handle using his method and it broke right where I had used the vice grips to pull on it. I shoulda used a bottle of coca cola I m thinking
A tip for removing the wash plate. Once i removed the bolt, I sprayed that area with a little wd40. I tried the shoestring method, to no avail. I decided to grab my harbor freight gloves that have a rubberized coating on them, to wrap the shoestring around my fingers to assist in pulling up. That failed. For some reason I grabbed two of the fins and accidentally pulled the wash plate straight up and out lol. The shoestring would have never worked because I pulled it too much to one side (to keep it from slipping out) that it was wedged under the drive pump plate. I think by reading about the problems people had, I was expecting for it to be very difficult, so I didn't start with the easiest method. So don't be like me... try the easier, less forceful way first. 😂
The Maytag engineers that designed this agitator configuration must have never ever, in their life lived as a kid or in a household with kids. This design begs the opportunity: ,,,,,,hey, i wonder how many objects, necklace chains, nails, coins, shirt sleeves, buttons, etc etc etc will be trapped as they slide back and forth over this slot while water drains out. HMMMMMM.....yeah, i would rate this design as "stupid as dirt". And to have to hammer drills, rust eater, vicegrips, airballoons and Gandalf's staff to get the agitator off. yeah, another example of stupid. Last maytag for me.
I personally have tried that way many times and it does not work as easily as you say..as matter of fact just tried in my shop yesterday with no avail once again..terrible design..I get all happy inside when they pop up lol...I've been a tech since mid 90's
I wondered where I got that hook tool...I think I need two because one isn't working. It's ridiculous that there is no provision for like a 3 arm pulley puller
For the life of me, I cannot get this plastic agitator plate off my Whirlpool WTW5000DW. I removed the 7/16” nut completely and used vice grips to try and pull it up to no avail. I almost wonder if there is some other screw somewhere holding it in since it is so stubborn. I’ve gotten the back of my hammer underneath the lip of it to pry it open and it just cracked the plastic. This thing is either insanely fused on or there is some other screw holding on to it. Tried WD-40 and that didn’t make a dent on it at all.
I figured that the strong back and forth movement during the wash cycle should loosen it. So I loosened the pulsator screw (not remove it) just a bit, put it through the wash cycle a few times, then finally removing the screw and presto, the pulsator plate floated right off the base. One clue that it’s ready to come off is when you hear a knocking noise during wash cycle.
We had to cut ours out and cut the steel splined adapter because these parts are steel on steel and rusted together. Air bags, baring puller, hot water, hammer, wd40, nothing worked; only a cutter wheel.
helped me. I used a pair of vice grips on the lip in the center and wiggled it around while prying around the edge. my washer basket hub was shot, plastic gears went out
Some one made a comment another video placing little larger screws into the holes and let them stick out from 180 from each other. Use two pliers and pull straight up and it worked for me.
Is there a larger steel splined shaft/adapter that is on the smaller steel splined shaft that stays in? After getting my agitator plate off by it breaking, there is a larger splined piece keeping the plastic hub from coming off!?
Is it okay that some of the small plastic pieces from the wash plate gets into the water at the bottom? I had to break apart my wash plate and got some plastic pieces at the bottom of the drum and was hoping it's not a big deal.
My pulsator is significantly stuck to the drive shaft!!! Can I use WD-40 (or olive oil) or similar to get it loose? I've tapped and pried... Obviously, I don't want to introduce clothes staining, but cannot get it out (without damaging the pulsator, I fear).
Wow yours was clean . Compared to some I've seen. I watched another video about how to get that open and he used a butter knife and shoes string. I'll try it.
You can use hanging wire too. Easier to slip in. Will be difficult to pull out. Give it some time and many tries. Slowly you will feel it start to slide off.
Is there a trick to getting the nut off? I’m having a similar issue but it seems to just keep spinning when I’m using the ratchet. I’m even holding the basin, but it keeps spinning.
didn’t work for me. the plastic plate broke and I am frustrated beyond belief. repair guy quoted me over $200. screw that, I’m buying a new POS tomorrow and expect it to fail in 5 years just like this one. will be stripping out the motor and copper for the scrap yard
So my problem is that the part that connect the wash plate to the agitator is stuck. The wash plate is gone but the metal part is still stuck on I need help
A gear puller will work. Make sure to put the large bolt back in the center before using a gear puller, but don't tighten it all the way down, just a few turns. You can rent a gear puller at any auto parts store.
I have seen videos where they break it up to take it out I've seen the videos where they try to pry it up I've seen the videos where they take a shoestring and put it underneath it and try to wiggle it free literally all you need is a hammer top it on two or three sides and it'll pop right off
I slip a 341241 whirlpool dryer belt under the wash plate, and then use my shoulders back muscles and pull up while crossing my arms so the wash plate doesn’t whack me in the chin
Just a thought... baking soda neutralizes the acid in the vinegar. To get the full corrosive effect from the vinegar you probably want to use it full strength. I wish I would have tried the vinegar first- I scratched the tub trying to pry out the agitator.
@@Milfordbeach When baking soda is mixed with vinegar, the acid breaks down baking soda, releasing carbon dioxide gas that can help lift dirt from the surfaces being cleaned

Oh forgot to mention I put olive oil on the screw. Soaked it up then hit the wrench handle with the hammer til it turned. I don't have wd40 or other sprays lol
Hello. OK, FOllow the bouncing ball here, this is not that difficult. FIrt, remember the splines that connect the wash plate to the transmission are tapered! Prying up on ANY side of the plate only makes things worse since it pinches the splines together and all manner of yankiing on the edges simply tightens the two splines even more! Here is the best way that worked perectly for me: First, once you remove the center bolt, pour either heated white vinegar or a good spray of BLASTER around the bolt hole making certain it gets into the splie area. Let that soak in for at least an hour. Next, gently tap all around the center collar of the plate including tapping both sides of each impeller vane. NOT TOO HARD, just enough to break any corrosion between the two splie parts...make and female. Probably should NOT hit down onto where the bolt was...that will only further jam the splines together. Not doo. Now, take a GOOD pair of channel locks, tightly grip anywhere around the top edge of the bolt collar (the raised circle that surrounds the bolt), and yank up. Voila, it should come right out but make certain you pull it STRAIGHT UP and not torqued to one side of the other. All the other methods only worked againsT you. And when you are ready to replace the impeller or wash plate, make certain you take a good brass brush and clean out the splines as much as you can to remove any loose corrosion. Take a tooth brush soaked in blaster or WD40 to clean out the inside of the plate spines. Then, coat both splines with a good Anti Seize lubricant (Permatex is a good choice in the gray tube). Replace the wash plate or agitator and exercise up and down gently to evenly better distribute the lubricant. You are done. Relplace the bolt with the BLUE Lock Tite lubricant. Now if you need to remove it at a future date, repeating the above provess will allow the plate to be removed easily if even you need to do that. And no, the lube will not stain your clothes. It is fully encapsulated by the tight fit of the two splices. Enjoy.. Dr. Z (Lou)
