  • Trying to give a mediocre description of why I love the Honda CBR 500R, and disliked the Yamaha R3. As well as how the first few months of riding has been.

    You're bang on with the 500r not being popular... That's why we need people like you to promote it :) It really is a hidden gem especially the styling of the 2019+. Nice video and subscribed!

      I just checked prices locally and this is going for ~$7K when the CB500F is $5.5K and the cbr600r can be grabbed for $8.5K. It’s either spend less for naked or spend a little more for batshi+ fast.

      @@TheTommyGun It's the price man the price. Dealerships in my area want $8K for this thing OTD. When they're done with their $1,200 - $2,000 dealer fees it makes the bike not worth it. I honestly believe most motorcycle sales are from new riders purchasing lower cc bikes because these dealers seem to prey on people buying those type of bikes. I've heard all kinds of dumbsh*t from salesmen trying to convince me some cheaply manufactured entry level bike with cheap parts is worth paying their ridiculous fee for. You want a 600cc or above they'll throw deals at you all day because those bike sit around forever depreciating but entry level bikes those go fast. They know some young and dumb eager rider just wants to get out and ride and will pay whatever they ask to get their first bike. You should see prices of Ninja 400's and R3's by me it's crazy. One dealer is selling a used 2018 Ninja 400 with 6,000 miles at $700 above the MSRP of a brand New Ninja 400. They also haven't had a CBR500R on their show room floor in years and will tell you it's not a popular bike that's why they don't carry them... when the truth is they don't order them in the first place because no one is willing to pay $8K for the bike.

    Great video! I have a 2020 ZX6R but wanted something that was more comfortable for longer rides and still looked and handled good so I picked up a 2019 500R recently. As incredible a machine the ZX6R is, I find myself riding the 500R a lot more. The supersport position gets tiring fast and the 500R is plenty fun.
    I started on a R3 and bought a Ninja 400 two months later. One month after that, I bought a 2019 ZX6R (still had all 3 at this point). Sold the R3 and ZX6R and kept the 400. Six months later, I really missed the performance of the 6R, so I traded the 400 on a 2020 model. Long story short, you were right to go with the 500R first. I lost a ton of money making many poor decisions. Lesson finally learned.

    • @TheTommyGun
      @TheTommyGun  4 роки тому +2

      Awesome response my man! Your timeline is pretty spot on and would be helpful for a lot of new riders I feel. Couldn’t recommend the 500R enough for a beginner as the power delivery is incredibly smooth throughout all the gears and the riding position is a great mix between aggressive and laid upright. Glad you have found something you enjoy!

    • @tricasterstrat
      @tricasterstrat 3 роки тому

      I feel you bro especially on the 'poor decisions' part. Started on a Yamaha R15 (155cc), got tired of it 6 mths later, sold it and got and R25 (250cc). Currently on the 25 for a year now and looking to a 500R, but don't have the money yet. The 25 gets a lil buzzy and tired on long journeys. Though the top speed on the 25 and 500R are close, I imagine the 500R is much less buzzier on the top end.
      In short, I'd should have started on the 500R rather than 'climb the ladder'. I already have a full-license anyway (in my country a full license enables you to ride bikes above 250cc).

    It's called a dead red light. In some states motorcyclists can treat a non responsive stoplight like a stop sign as long as they yield to other traffic. The dead red rule applies in Arkansas, Idaho, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and Wisconsin, which allow a motorcyclist to proceed with caution after coming to a complete stop through a red light that fails to detect the bike. Oregon and Washington similar laws but I couldn't find anything with a quick search.

    Ive owned my cbr500r for a little over 3 years now and I can safely say I have no complaints about it, havent had any mechanical issues and its being driven in standard Irish weather which is on the wet side for most of the year it has never let me down! I absolutely adore this bike, it looks amazing, so smooth to drive, its not too heavy and it can overtake cars in fast lanes with no problem. Im only 5'3 and I can touch the floor comfortably with both feet and sit upright. It manages fuel very well using only a little over half a tank on a 3 hour drive travelling 207km across the country. It also gets a ton of compliments at local bike gatherings and many people mistake it for a fireblade due to the shape and colours lol

I could have started on something bigger but don't have any regrets. It's a ton of fun. I'll probably trade it in next spring for the 2019-2020 cbr650r and put a ton of miles on it. Mine was less than $6,500 brand new so not sure what others are talking about. Even if it's more than others of the same class, Honda has a well-deserved reputation of quality engineering and reliability. In my experience their stuff is bulletproof and worth every penny.

    Great video. I own a 2018 CBR500R. I am finally at the point now over 2 years later where I’m looking at other bikes(2021 MT07/09) but I will say I could easily go another a season on my CBR. The CBR is a great bike if you don’t want too much power but also don’t want too little. Albeit it is a bit pricey if you intend to drive it for only a year or so than trade up. If that’s the case I would recommend the Ninja 400 over it. I could see many people driving a CBR500R for multiple years if they do most of their riding locally

    Not sure where you are, but in South Carolina if you are at a light and it doesn't change for you after 120 seconds you can use the red light as a stop sign and go when clear. Also the weight of the vehicle doesn't matter. It uses a magnet to sense when there's a vehicle stopped at the light.

      I install traffic loops for private businesses - the wiring in the ground is a continuous series of loops, connected to a circuit with an ocsilator. It's basically a metal detector. As a motorcycle is so much smaller than a car, sometimes you'll stop & not be over the sensor range. Here in Arkansas, we also can go after waiting if the motorcycle doesn't register & the light doesn't change after a minute or two.

    I have an r3. Small displacement bikes are fun! I had bought a 2018 cb650f for my first bike and it got stolen about 2 weeks later. Honestly I'm better off with the r3. The cb650f was pretty damn fast for a beginner. Almost twice the horsepower of yours, and 0-60 in 3.3 seconds. I bought the 2020 r3 because I got it for 4,500 out the door, brand new. I won't be keeping it forever, so it's just to build the skills. After that it'll be the mt10. The r3 is actually faster than the cbr500r

It's just that dealers mark them up so much it turns people off from getting them and then when you try to sell one it's so unpopular that you have to sell it lower and lose out even further. It just has a bad rep because of greedy dealership politics. instead of being it being the affordable $6K range bike to compete with the R3 and Ninja 400 it just becomes an $8K non ABS -$9K w/ABS entry level bike with sub par performance to price ratio.

    It is a fact. if you ride the speed limit a 300-500 is MORE THAN ENOUGH. if you rlllyyyy want a 600.. go for it but let's be honest.. if you dont go to track or ride illegal then you dont need more HP than 48. then we can talk about comfort/look and SOUND..

      I’m not incredibly familiar with the model before Honda redid the 500r in 2019. But from what I could tell it’d be a good bike for your needs! It won’t have the gear indicator which is one of the reasons I wanted to 2019-. But I think you’d be alright if it’s in a respectable price!

      Both would be great bikes! Do you have a preferred style, one that you see on the rode and are like damn that's sick!

      @@mrbced21 It's pretty forgiving on the back for the most part. I can do about 3 hours with no breaks, but that's about as long as I'll go without one.
      Something to consider about the 500f is that it has little to no wind protection, especially when sitting nearly straight up. In longer rides on the freeway that wind really becomes noticeable.

      The 500 is a better buy, the 300 is single cylinder, underpowered and struggles on the highway, especially if you need to pass or make an emergency maneuver under power, borderline dangerous. Even the 500 could use another 10hp. I installed a 14t front sprocket for that extra passing acceleration. Lowered top end by about 5mph, but much better at passing in the 40-80mph range.

    R3 looks good but the 500r looks like a supersport , really. r3 and ninja 300 are too small. 500r is bigger and makes you look like you're riding a supersport, literally. ive had so many compliments and people think my 500r is really fast, lol, because of it's super sport look. i'd have to be very poor to want to downgrade to a 300 for $1,000 less. no thanks.
