I’ve had an intense love affair with both Opeth and Katatonia since about 98! It was crazy when Damnation and Deliverance dropped at the same time, one delicate and one brutal album to please all. And then Ghost Reveries came out and ripped everyone a new one 🤯
Damnation isn't my favorite album by any means, but listening to Mikåel sing is, so that alone makes me happy.
I do find comfort in silence. For quite a long time at the end of a work day before I retired (2017), all I wanted was silence. No music, no radio, and at times, not even television.
To this day, I can't stand noise. Finally in 2019 I started listening to music again via UA-cam reactions. Thank goodness because I found some great music. Opeth being #1 ever since.
I still find great comfort in silence, but I'm not as bad as I used to be.

This is a poignantly beautiful song and a hauntingly, brilliantly well done album that most all OPETH fans seem to love, regardless of the surprised lack of extreme vocals. Mikael’s clean, emotive voice & guitar work is on full display on this exquisite gem of an album!
To answer one of your questions, silence is indeed a comfort to me and where I can be myself. Thank you, Lauren, for your honest moment of emotional encouragement, it & this music brought a tear to this crusty, old metal head’s eye, and music IS the salve that soothes my wounds, even if it’s only for a moment(.) 🤟🏼

Thank you for doing this one! This is probably one of my favorite songs off of this album cause of the mix. The dampening of the sounds initially really brought out the emotion once all the sounds came in full.
It is also the reason why I prefer Windowpane when it comes to the live version. Cause for the band, playing it is no different, but as a listener that effect of bringing in all those wonderful sounds really adds to the emotion. Hearing it without that simply just doesn't hit the same (though still very good!)
Damnation / Deliverance is soooo good! I really, Really reccommend checking out the Lamentations live DVD. That's gold era Opeth in a 2-set nutshell.

If you mean by great to play that it literally bite you in the dick you're right. I love this song and looked it up...its soooo hard to play the rythm guitar for the stretches. Needs really work to play it, even Mikael admit its a harder song to play. Its also my favorite, the sad lyrics and the music really benefits each other.

This song is just beautiful... sad beauty... love it :) I have two girls, 6 and 3 years old, so silence is precious and very very much appreciated lol I absolutely love that line, and I always thought of it as silence between two people, lack of communicating and therefore avoiding conflict, that is why it is comforting - at the same time very lonely. That is how I interpret it anyway. thanks agaaaaaain for loving them as we do :) looking forward to the 5 onesssssss ieeeeiiiiii \o/

I love this song
For me, silence is necessary when looking deep inside myself. When I was younger such self-reflection was incredible scary. Therefore I made sure to avoid it at all costs. One way to avoid it is making sure there are always distractions of some kind around.

I didn't appreciate silence until I had neighbors move in next door who liked to absolutely BLAST rap music for hours at a time. Now I like rap music just fine, but if you're hearing someone else playing rap music from their car, house, whatever, all you're hearing is a constant THUMP, THUMP, THUMP. It was so loud in my house I could tell they were playing the same Spotify playlist of garbo mainstream rap every time. I'm usually pretty good at tuning out outside noises like planes going over, dogs barking, whatever, but those inconsiderate fucks drove me nuts with their shitty music.
So anyway I moved, I'm happier, and I no longer take silence for granted. Long live the Opeth boys and Mr. Porcupine.
