Pity there's so little footage from this man, you can tell his beatiful tone even from the Internet. Probably one of the best Shetland fiddlers ever - I'm tempted to say even better than Aly Bain, and I like the playing of both a lot -. His recordings with Violet Tulloch on piano are simply amazing.
Oh my🙂 better than Aly Bain!? That's saying alot lol. Hunters fiddle style is very very nice I just love 0:04-0:08. That's transition from low to high notes made my heart sigh in infatuation 🤩
@@lawrencepalacios8394 Well, technically he was more acomplished than Bain; the "transition" you said is position shift, normal more in classically trained violinists than in trad. fiddlers - Irish ones play almost exclusively in 1st position -. That said, I've heard the 3 recordings in wich Hunter plays and believe me, he's closer to the great Scottish fiddlers like Douglas Lawrence than to the typical Shetland fiddler... To another great fiddler from Shetland, search on YT about Maggie Adamson... :)
Absolutely richt!! For me he also was the number one.Second remained for me Peter Woods Da Fustra.Although, there's another Shetland Band coming up....Catticloo!!!! Playing great stuff!
Thank you for this post. Richard Wood played this tune on a recording of his many years ago and I have always wondered the name of it. Suppose I’ll have to learn it now because I have always liked it.
He was my fiddle teacher as a bairn. He was the most patient man you could ever wish to meet! I struggled (and still do) to read music but could pick it up from ear. He was forever telling me to stop looking out of the window whilst playing. A true gentleman 💕

There was none better than Willie, both as a player and composer.

Wonderful clip. My father played fiddle like this.
Great post! Willie was leader in several bands, such as "The HameFahrers". Have got an LP of them on the Polydor Label.

Glad you like that clip, Tony. I've just posted a few more.
