That was really fun. Thank you. I met the girl who became my wife in Shetland, in 1974, when I came up from England for the fiddle music. Spent three summers in a row working at Shetland Seafoods, where the Mareel complex is now. One of my abiding memories is of getting thrown out of The Planets along with a Glaswegian friend of mine - in a perverse kind of way, I'm rather proud of that achievement, but I'm a reformed character these days. My wife and I live in Australia now. We came over for a visit in 2012 after we read about Mareel on the internet. I'd forgotten how strong - and constant - the wind is. I remember the Sullom Voe refinery being built, went to see it on our visit, and drove up to Muckle Flugga, first time on Unst. I was in that northernmost shop. Shetland certainly is a special place and long may it be so.
Really enjoyed this video and wee look at Shetland! We are planning a month to Scotland as our once in a lifetime holiday - and Shetland is on the list of "must see" - hope to spend at least a week there. Thank you for the video from fans in Canada!
Came to this by way of researching the locales in Ann Cleeves's books, of course. What a super video -- charming and clever and very funny. Makes me want to leave my apartment in NYC and wander through Shetland.
Very well done and funny! I am looking forward to spend part of my sabatical next year on Shetland isles. I will watch out for this guy with remarkable sideburns.
we, an american married to a brit and living near london....yuk....havent had a vacation in 4 years.....we discussed everything from germany to spain....but after 2 vacations in scotland about 6 and 8 years ago, we talked, hubby gave free reigns and i picked shteland to consider first. well, we LOVE to laugh and i can honestly say the A TO Z video has me sold....and with very little prodding, i am sure i can convince my husband to take the ride up and out in April [knowing it will still be chilly, yes] to as far in the islands as we can manage!!!! Thanks for the laughs and the introduction.....getting excited already for the probable trip north!!!
What a great wee film. Well done JJ, Bryan, Joanne, Stevie and all the team. I lived there for many years and worked with all these great people in the Bongshang days. I miss the place so much, without doubt the best place I have, or will ever live, and I have lived and worked in lots of countries. All the very best to you all and have one in the Lounge for me.
One of the best videos I’ve seen on UA-cam. Very professional! I’m hoping to go to Unst in January to see where my dad was stationed at Saxa Vord, Thank you!
That was absolutely brilliant! Hilarious and informative at the same time.. thanks for making and sharing. From Hermanus, South Africa. (Almost the most Southerly town in Africa)
Brilliant Great Fun!!! I did a removal from RAF Lyneham, Wiltshire to RAF Saxaford. Early Eighties. One of the most memorable journeys in my life. A Wobderful Journey!!! Thank-you for Your Video. FAB😅😜💃💭🤺 PS. Can't wait to Go Back.!!! ⛵🐸🤺
This was very informative and the little jokes made this very amusing to watch. I did not know that Shetland is also known as Hjaltland. I might just use that one from now on. One thing that I noticed is that the sign at 3:57 says Leirvík (Old Norse: Muddy Bay). We, in the Faroe Islands and Iceland, still use these nordic words and, here, "leir" means clay, not mud. I don't know if this is a translation error or the word just got changed throughout history.
I LOVED this! I "learned" about Shetland by watching the TV crime drama by the same name - and now I want to visit - from Maple Creek, Saskatchewan, Canada.
Great video, but I don't have what it takes to deal with the constant cold! Beautiful scenery. Bet the lady knows how to knit a warm sweater. For staying warm nothing beats real wool!
Funny! 😂 I'm currently tracing my ancestry of Johnson from Nova Scotia and need to confirm if my 5x Great Grandfather was John Johnson born Scatsta, Delting. I have an actual complete birthdate in 1780. I knew I was Scotch ancestry (also from Chisholm) but the Shetland link is new! I hope I'm right. I would love to visit! I always loved, moody weather, wild terrain, and bagpipes. 😂 Great little video! ❤
Great video. Would love to visit Shetland one day. If the commentator is any indication, Shetlanders (correct term?) have a similar sense of humour to Canadians.
That was hilarious, thank you for making me giggle. I’d love to visit to experience the culture and community, the landscape, the wildlife, the Simmer Dim and the Aurora Borealis...probably not at the same time🤔. I have seen the Aurora Borealis and the bird life remotely by webcam. By the way were you(presenter) the little boy dressed as a Viking?
I've moved away now but its good to see stuff like this. Great video buoys, PS has Hazel got a son called Neil? And bides in aid? If so I used to play in her house probably in around 89'.
Excellent! Excellent! Excellent! Few questions. What's the percentage of visitors from the US? Where are the bagpipes? Where did you get your ideas for the video?

This was wonderful to read. I hope Australia's treating you well!
Nice story, thanks for sharing.
Interesting reading your memories, thanks. 1974 huh - long time ago.......
Idk how many times I’ve watched this but it’s amazing!! Living on shetland from mainland been here for 1 and a half years best choice ever made... ❤️
Excellent! Glad you hear you're loving Shetland :)

Wonderful. Watching this on a bus in western Australia, can't wait to get back!

Ah, you know it's a great place when you have to pause the video halfway through to look up how much the flights there will cost. :D
The flights are as bumby as you can get so get there with your own windy risk but it's worth living here
Spoiler- loads

Shetland. The good lady & I first visited in the early 1990s. Only really meant to go once. We have been back on twenty three occasions.

Seeing Hazel Tindall was the best

Great video, but I don't have what it takes to deal with the constant cold! Beautiful scenery. Bet the lady knows how to knit a warm sweater. For staying warm nothing beats real wool!
Wonderfully funny and reminds me of the good times I spent in Shetland.
Lovely Shetland! I love to be there in holidays 😍. Greetings from Germany

Could you do video in the winter to see how heavy the snowfall can get and to see what the landscape is like when it does
You might like this one... ua-cam.com/video/dV4qaIkIHNs/v-deo.html PS we don't usually get much in the way of snow: www.shetland.org/about/climate
And a great sense of humor!
This was hilarious. Thanks for making.
Amusing and informative video.
It's plain to see that the craic is mighty in Shetland. Thanks for the video. 👍
Its a very entertaining video. How come there's so few trees? The scenery is beautiful. I would like to visit there.
What trees?
Last time I saw trees in shetland. Was never
Loved the video❤️ from Australia
Brilliant! Cheered me up.😀
Thanks a lot for this video. I found it quite informative and fun. It's increased my desire to visit Shetland someday. :-)
Great video. Would love to visit Shetland one day. If the commentator is any indication, Shetlanders (correct term?) have a similar sense of humour to Canadians.
I love it so funny, great piece of work!

10 flights is more than I expected. The area my parents live in only has 2 each way a day. Shetland is obviously alot bigger.
Went to skaw beach in unst yesterday. Great beach. But remember not to go swimming in it and norwick beach because of strong underwater currents.
Oh my word, I love a good laugh! :D Looking forward to a visit!
Bloody marvelous.
I love this video. Well done. Shetland's on my list :)
I will be returning to Shetland for a 5 day holiday in May, not driving a truck though...I cannot wait to get back...
Hello from Gothenburg!
Love Shetland, been there around 20 times, I'd move there if I could.
Brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hello from Southern Italy! :-)
Pietro Paolo why were you watching this, Pietro?
@@a0um Pietro can watch whatever he wants bro.
The difference between Southern Italy and Shetland is that the latter has no African migrants.
WONDERFUL!
excellent video guys, brilliantly told ! Hello from Rome, will visit one day. Any hotels ?
Yes
I've moved away now but its good to see stuff like this. Great video buoys, PS has Hazel got a son called Neil? And bides in aid? If so I used to play in her house probably in around 89'.
I'm an artist living in Los Angeles. I'm goin to make my way there this year. Burrrrrrrrr!!!!!! Can't wait!!!!
That was hilarious. Can’t wait to visit now.
Just brilliant😂❤
Delightful!
Excellent! Excellent! Excellent! Few questions. What's the percentage of visitors from the US? Where are the bagpipes? Where did you get your ideas for the video?
They don't play bagpipes in Shetland. Not much Scottish culture in Shetland
+Martin that's because we're originally came from Scandinavia
Great fun ,,
Luvvit! What a great, fun video...
I fell in love in Lerwick Youth Hostel. She was a Parisian.
As a Finn, I appreciate your flag design ;)
Ahhh love that Twatt sign
Right about the fog a 1 hour return trip became 24+ hours by ferry, bus and plane, still a fantastic place to visit though.
Loved this! Just one question...
What the heck was that thing that represented the letter “R”? 🧐
