    "What's she acting so naive for?" Because that's exactly what she is. She's been incredibly sheltered and has no idea how bad things really are for the people of the Undercity. But the thing about Caitlyn that separates her from the other elites in Piltover is that when she starts to see the truth, she doesn't look away. She cares about the people who are suffering and wants to do whatever she can to help them.

      You're not entirely wrong, but Vi wants so desperately to defeat Silco because she thinks it's the only way to save her sister. Yes it's also about revenge, but we know this is always a second-tier motivating factor for her. First on her list is always protecting the people she cares about, sacrificing anything to keep them safe. She's certainly not as generally altruistic as Caitlyn but she is very, very selfless when it comes to the people she loves. "Protect the family" is her creed.

      I'm pretty sure it's a nod to a moviemaking technique from a very old vampire movie - I want to say Nosferatu (1922) but I can't find a still showing it. It was also used in Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) with Gary Oldman's shadow strangling Keanu Reeves. Other nods to art are Powders waiflike design resembling the girl on the Les Miserables posters, Powders "look" at the end of ep3: "The Fallen Angel" by Alexandre Cabanel. Heimerdingers apocalyptic visions: various paintings by John Martin. The painting on the wall behind Vi when she's leaping between buildings: Alphonse Mucha "JOB" cigarette art deco posters.

    Almost no one understands the specific nature of the threat Silco is making to Marcus. He isn’t threatening to harm Ren. He’s not even threatening to kill Marcus. Piltover is a highly stratified patrician society. If you aren’t born into a house/clan with a name (like Jayce or Mel) your options are limited. There is little movement between classes. Based upon his accent, Marcus is from the lower rungs of Piltover society. Ren’s mother is dead; Marcus is a single father. After Greyson’s ignominious death, the only reason Marcus wound up as sheriff was because Silco made it happen. Without that position, his daughter has little chance of a decent life. Marcus cannot break free of Silco’s control without sacrificing his daughter’s future. At the first sign of disobedience, all Silco has to do is expose Marcus, and the Piltover Council will ruin his life…and his daughter’s. Silco is reminding Marcus that the only reason he has what he has is because Silco allowed him to have it.
    Silco’s also furious that Marcus lied about Vi being dead…

    Heimerdinger is a Yordle.
    Theyre almost purely magic creatures and essentially immortal.
    They dont die of age and if they somehow does get killed they "respawn" back in Bandle City.
    Atleast thats before.
    They just made Arcane canon so they might change alot of things.
    Heimerdinger is over 900 years old in the original lore, the cataclysmic war he remembers took place like 600-700 years ago.
    Since Arcane is now canon, he is 300 years and the war is not that distant.
    Granted, time flows differently in Bandle Cty, IF they feel like it they can just say he is 300 years old in *our* time but actually 900 years old and it could still make sense.
    It seems like alot of extra work to implement a whole parallell time paradigm for no reason but considering the damage it could do to the entire time line of the lore and the infinite ripples it would cause it might not be so far fetched after all.
    But I digress.
    As this show was made, it was not meant to be canon hence its probably safe to assume Yordles were thought of as immortal.
    Thats why Heimerdinger never contemplates his own death.
    Its not that he will outlive all these humans, its that he wont ever die.

    16:45 Jayce is trying to save Viktor. Heimer's methods won't allow it so he needs to get rid of him. It isn't really sudden or about progress itself. That's a background thing in comparison to Viktor's illness.

    • @SiMeGamer
      @SiMeGamer 8 місяців тому +6

      Yeah. Idk why so many seem to miss this point. If you don't get rid of Heimerdinger, then Viktor will not be able to use the Hexcore to hopefully cure himself. Jayce frames it differently during the council meeting but the goal is simply to rid Heimerdinger off his councilor power. We even see Jayce being the last to vote and having a really hard time because he doesn't actually want to do it.

    • @LockeNarshe
      @LockeNarshe 8 місяців тому +5

      @@SiMeGamer A lot of people miss the point because they do the same thing with Heimer/Jayce that they do with Marcus/Vi--they choose a side and stick to it. Rather than assessing the context around what's going on and trying to come to reasonable conclusions based on where each character is at in their own journey, people tend to choose someone they "side with" and then ignore any-and-all context that augments their first impressions of whoever they're "against". There are so many scenes in which the viewpoints of Heimer/Jayce are shown to differ, as well as how conflicted Marcus is and how far the situation has spun out of his control (remember, he never wanted anyone dead).
      People do this, in my opinion, because so much entertainment nudges them to feel this way. "Good" vs. "Evil". Black-and-white thinking. It's a bit of a disservice to this show's writing, but it also explains why this show's careful nuance and attention-to-detail caused it to be the breakout that it was--giving you all the facts over time and subtlety asking you to re-examine your biases and challenge your first impressions.

      The actual best way forward would be to start developing and implementing those solutions. Heimerdinger obviously doesn't realize how bad things are but that doesnt' mean he can't be educated on the subject. He doesn't have to paralyze the whole council, but he makes a poor leader to humans who live a limited time and need more rapid solutions.
      He'd be a great advisor on the council though, especially since he's the only uncorrupted one of the lot and Jayce knows it after having been dealing with all the others.

    Yeah the 'Guns for Hire' sequence is bloomin' amazing!! Such powerful storytelling! There are still several great sequences like this to go, but I do think this is my favourite from the series. I think it is really interesting how you question how naive Caitlyn is to living without parents, as it is a subtle but arguably the best example of Piltover privilege. It is very possible she genuinely hasn't known anyone that are in Vi's position, and therefore never even imagined what it would be like.

    What is interesting in Jayce vs Heimerdinger is that they both have a point. Heimerdinger is right in being cautious with the excess of technology advancement, but Jayce is also right that his passivity and ignorance of tbe undercity's plight lead to the current conflict. Heimerdinger offers beautiful speeches but no solutions. His wealth and immortality somehow detached him from the reality and urgency of what everyday people suffer. You were talking over it so not sure if you noticed but you were correct; the girl working with Jayce and Vikktor is the same from when he was younger (Jayce calls her sky when they were working on the plants).
    Along with that, the guy Vikktor met during childhood you’ve actually met before too. He’s the guy that was working with Silco who experimented with shimmer on the rat and cat in episode 1 and present until episode 3 when he gets caught in Powder’s explosion (which is why he’s all burned up and scarred when Vikktor meets with him in the present)
    Also Caitlin is acting naive when she’s talking with Vi. She doesn’t have a good idea about the world beyond her bubble which is why her traveling with Vi is so important because she legitimately can’t imagine how shitty the extent of the undercity is and what VI’s been through.

    Very interesting thing I missed for a long time..
    Jinx’s schizo-breaks aren’t just random drawings and moments.
    Of course it’s in her head, but when drawings of Claggor or Mylo show up, it is meant to directly show who is “talking to her”.
    For instance, when you see Mylo or drawings that show him, she typically responds defensively or aggressively.. because Mylo always would make fun of her.
    In this episode after Jinx sees Caitlyn, Mylo pops up and most likely mocks the situation in her head.. in which she responds “Shut up! I’m in no mood!”
    Just a very nice touch to make her self-dialogue more impactful.

    Heimerdinger had honorable intentions. He genuinely wants the best for people.
    But he is complacent, blind to people's struggles, lazy, arrogant and incompetent in leading. He's a scientist. Not a politician. He is a big part of why the undercity and topside drifted so far apart. And he's not doing anything about it. His leadership failed immensely.
    Jayce is idealistic, but naive and impressionable. He can be steered too easily into whatever direction by other people. But ultimately he also wants to help people and improve lives, including the undercity.
    Mel Medarda is interesting. Her intentions and motivations are not yet 100% clear at this point.

    The confrontation between Heimerdinger and Jayce is a tough one, because both of them have good points: Jayce is rushing things, dangerously so, yet Heimderdinger doesn't have a plan beyond patience and time. And both of them are too emotional and stubborn to compromise, so we end up with Heimerdinger being forced to step down.
    "Are you real?" is one of the most heartbreaking lines in the show for me. Poor Jinx is so mentally damaged, and she knows it; she knows that she can't trust what her own mind tells her.
    The sisters can't catch a break. Their reunion was going well, but Caitlyn showing up instantly put Jinx on edge and flared up her insecurities/paranoia. Then the Firelights arrive, and once again, Vi and Jinx are separated.
    On the action side of things, Jinx's reflexes and speed are ungodly. She's also considerably stronger than she looks, considering she can swing that gatling gun around so easily. Combine all that with how unpredictable she is, and Jinx is one of the most dangerous people in the series.

    But that's the thing, the city _hasn't_ been doing well under Heimerdinger, for a very long time. The violence at the bridge at the very beginning of Episode 1 that killed Jinx and Vi's parents happened under his watch. That disparity _happened under his watch._ Viktor and Jayce may be rash and hasty, but they have such a good point, and Heimerdinger has not been listening to them. Viktor and Jayce could do with a few ounces more wisdom, but Heimerdinger needs a wake-up call.

    18:33 Yeah, and they foreshadowed it when he asked Cait to tell Vi "I'm sorry for everything". He never interacted with her in episode one so there's no reason we are given for him to feel the need to apologize to Vi. He either had already given them up or was about to. The amount of foreshadowing in this show, when you dive deep into it, is amazing. It's like that scene from The Good Place: "We found all 4 clues [foreshadows] you left us!" "That's great, but I actually left over 1200 clues [foreshadows]".
    Now for the Professor and Jayce. I agree with Jayce that Heimerdinger should not be on the council anymore because he is out of touch and seemingly refuses to do anything about anything. In the scene where Jayce is making his corrupted deals with the other councilors, you can see it focuses on Heimer vibing to the music with his eyes closed (symbolic to Heimer vibing to life while not seeing how far gone the council is). What Heimer needed at that time was a wake-up call so he can see the world again. And while I hate seeing his sad puppy dog eyes, I think it ultimately will turn into the right decision.

      @@Hohum37 Literally before the deals started Jayce calls it corruption... Mel was surprised by how quickly he took to doing it (fast learner).
      Early access to Hextech innovations so the councilors can get a head start on changing their businesses to accommodate or find ways to profit off the technology is a corrupted way to keep power. The councilors now have an even bigger advantage because they have extra time to accommodate the new tech coming up before anyone else even knows about it (only the council knows that Jayce/Viktor made the reinforced Hextech Gemstone). They can release whatever accessories or create new businesses well before anyone else, creating monopolies on all Hextech advancements, or at the very least stifle any competition.

      My theory about Heimerdinger is that he's cut himself from people to a degree. Not because he doesn't care about them - the opposite; after 200 years of living with mortals since founding the city, imagine the number of his friends that have died, and the toll that takes. "Do you contemplate death professor?" "Only that of friends".
      Imagine everyone you know and love right now. Now imagine they have all died; you make new friends, and they die, over and over and over.

    I'm less forgiving than most toward Heimerdinger it seems. Yes he wants the best for the city, but to him the city is an abstract entity; the suffering and deaths of its people just pass him by. Sure he gets a little sad but as Jason points out, he never takes any action. He represents the privilege elite; he doesn't need to change anything because everything is pretty great for him and those close to him. It's not malicious, just blind.
    He is also totally oblivious to the corruption in the council and the police force and prison system, at the very least. You say Caitlyn is naïve, but Heimerdinger is 15 times more so because he is 15 times as old. Plus as the most senior council member he has been de-facto ruler of the city for over 100 years. Is that particularly good or democratic? I don't agree with Jason's method here, but his argument is sound.
    Luckily, I think Heimerdinger realises all this for himself by the end of the season.

    Honestly this is pure speculation, but i think the threat to marcus's daughter by silco is a complete bluff. Silco is in a position where he understands that relationship intimately, due to jinx. I dont think he is the type of monster that kills children. In his own head he is simply trying to create a powerful indepentant nation, he doesnt see himself as villain. He plays the part of it quite well tho.

    • @TukaihaHithlec
      @TukaihaHithlec 8 місяців тому +4

      Really weird interpretation considering the often overlooked aspect of Silco is his repeated eagerness to kill kids.
      He sacrificed Decker, tried to kill all four of Vander’s kids, says he would have killed the Chembaron’s kid if he wasn’t already killed, celebrates the Firelights dying and uses them as a scapegoat knowing full well they’re mostly kids, causes a drug epidemic in his own community knowing how it will affect innocent kids.
      Silco is selfish, and while he loves Jinx like a daughter, he will gladly snuff out anyone else’s kid.
      Threatening Marcus’s daughter was absolutely not a bluff.

    • @tinius9276
      @tinius9276 8 місяців тому

      @@TukaihaHithlec I am not trying to say that Silco is an upstanding man who will never harm kids, he is a villain, and often turns his cheek to the sacrifices he makes for his vision. But honestly, him killing Marcus's daughter sounds less plausible than him just killing Marcus. Which I think the threat was more for. It wasn't about Silco killing the daughter it was leaving her fatherless after Marcus's death. Silco doesn't just jump-skip around killing kids, the Vander kids were teenagers who actively were fighting against him and his vision. The threat to the Chembaron kid is after their death which frankly means nothing. The firelights are also his sworn enemies. Marcus's daughter has nothing of worth to him, it's petty, and while he is a villain he holds himself in high regard. Also most of his kid "killing" happened before the time skip where his relation with Jinx started. Which obviously changed him. IDK I might be wrong but actively killing a completely innocent child over the actions of Marcus just doesn't sound like Silco's behavioral pattern to me.

      @@TukaihaHithlec It's truly bizarre how people think Silco wouldn't kill children. That care doesn't extend to anyone else.
