The reason the price is the biggest problem is that everything else about the IG is very impressive. Are there things about it that each of us would change or prefer otherwise? Absolutely! But if you step back, it is an amazing first edition of a vehicle that has so many features we all dream about having in one vehicle. Will service and support improve, it will have to. Will the price go down? No. Will the vehicle end up to be “reliable”? TBD! But I can tell you this, if money were no object I would get one. Of course, that’s not reality. So we are left with trade offs.

The UK spec offers several versions significantly cheaper than this, including the commercial versions that don't have side windows or back seats. They also have the Quartermaster pickup version, which can even be ordered as a cab/chassis without a bed, which will be a very popular foundation for people building overland campers. Ineos made a very deliberate decision to only offer the Grenadier in the US as a very low volume but highly priced vehicle.

The Low Volume/High Price US market strategy is because of the "Chicken Tax" tariff that was implemented, I think by Nixon. Not sure which U.S. President implemented it right now. The "Chicken Tax" is a tariff that was instituted on all imported trucks and commercial vans in response to a imported poultry tariff that was put on U.S. poultry by Europe. The tariff on U.S. poultry no longer exists, but the U.S. tariff on import trucks and commercial vans does. I believe the only bypass on this is NAFTA which allows trucks to be made in Mexico and Canada without the tariff. This is why the Toyota Tundra and Tacoma and Nissan Titan and Frontier are built in the U.S. Years ago, I read in Car & Driver magazine that all of the Ford Transit Connect and RAM Promaster City were being built in Europe. The commercial versions were getting around the tariff by being built, shipped and imported with rear passenger seats qualifying them as "passenger vans". Once the commercial vans had cleared customs the rear seats are removed and shipped back to Europe to be put in more vans. The "Chicken Tax" is also why the Subaru BRAT had two rear facing seats in it's truck bed.

    • @nolefaninil
      @nolefaninil Місяць тому +6

@@The_Opinion_of_Mattit was Lyndon Johnson who introduced the “chicken tax”. The automotive portion of that tariff was to appease GM(and avoid a strike in an election year) by taxing VW vans. It’s an outdated tax that should’ve been repealed years ago.

@@nolefaninil Thanks for the info. I'm torn on whether it should go away or not. If it went away then we would likely be able to buy things like the 70-series Land Cruisers or the Unimog, but it being in place has probably helped retain U.S. manufacturing jobs.

I’m glad you all are sort of liking it… I’m just not convinced… I DID have a pre-order in for one. I backed out after seeing one in person. The 2nd row doesn’t fold flat, the battery is under the back seat but there are no key holes to unlock the back doors or interior blips to flick to unlock the back doors, the power steering pump is ran by an electric motor turning a pump when you have a gas engine under the hood that can do it just fine. THAT adds to the complexity. Like Roman said, the grenadier is just as complicated as any BMW but you just don’t get all the features of a BMW, nor access to the BMW warranty network. When I test drove one, that key isn’t like old school ignitions where it directly engages a starter solenoid, that key just tells the computer to start the car. That’s not “simple” or “old school” it’s simulated “old school”. The transmission has no mechanical shift linkage, so if you have an electrical failure off-roading and you can’t get power, how do you put the thing in neutral? My understanding on BMW’s you gotta lay under the car and do something funky. With it being full time 4x4 there isn’t even a mechanical neutral to the transfer case. Then you add in things like electronic level adjustments to the headlights, it’s just too much to go wrong and too many electrical stuffs. Where they put the power steering electric motor they could have moved the pump to the engine and put the battery where the pump is at now. I can go on… this isn’t a “haters gonna hate” this is a I left them a deposit and waited to see the final product but was deeply disappointed. Then you add that any dealer is 80 miles one way from my house and from what I’ve heard, parts are SUPER expensive I’ve heard a key is over $1,000. Why? Haha that’s crazy. The list goes on. Even things like the air con. You pick a temperature, it has automatic climate control, what’s the matter with 4 fan speeds and a lever to actuate between hot and cold and an button that turns on a little relay that engages the air conditioning compressor? Why did they have to go automatic climate control? Now you have little motors under the dash that open and close valves and ducts and stuff. ALL of that adds to the complexity!

What's more messed up on the power steering is that if they just used electric assisted power steering (Like has been totally reliable in cars for at least 2 decades at this point) they could take out the middle man altogether and remove the hydraulic system completely. It's not like the steering feel for cornering on the limit matters for an off roader (Or you'll get it with a beam axle in the first place), so the lower inertia on good hydraulic steering systems is irrelevant. If the hydraulic system is used because it's better at resisting the wheel getting pulled out of the driver's hands when a wheel hits something at speed this might justify it, but a worm and roller electric assist system would do this perfectly well too.

@@MasterObiWanKenobi-db5tiAs someone who lives in the EU, there's no law I've ever heard of that requires the car to warn you if you're exceeding the speed limit, though the EURO NCAP crash tests might give passive safety points for it (Which devalues the rating system as it can allow structurally poor cars to still get a decent looking overall test result if they add all the electronic systems).
Any warning system that beeps at the driver will end up turned off all the time, making it useless in the real world. I would however love a set of speed limiter buttons for 30, 50 and 60 km/h where I press the button on passing the speed limit sign and the car won't go over the set limit unless I turn it off again or override it by flooring the throttle. This would be unbelievably useful for urban areas (Especially with the massive difference between pedestrian survival on impact at 50 vs. 60 km/h - 32 vs. 38 mph - irrelevant for the US though as the only way to explain what's going on in motoring there is to work on the basis that anyone walking around outside is presumed to be poor and therefore not worth considering in a crash in the first place).
In stop start traffic it's easy to drift over the limit unintentionally, and your eyes are best used to look at the road rather than the speedometer in urban driving anyway, but nobody is offering anything like it, even though it would be dirt cheap to add (Literally a few lines of code in the ECU and a few buttons in the dashboard) compared to all the extra cameras and sensors cars are being shipped with instead.
Also since most cars are calibrated to display higher than actual speed on the speedometer (The odometer/trip meter distance, calculated from the same input speed data is accurate, so they know exactly what they're doing), that warning would probably be going off 2-3 mph before you're even at the speed limit too.

I don’t have that many miles on mine, yet. I did a base build up with both the Smooth Pack (includes heated leather seats) and Rough Pack (3 locking diffs). I think you guys should have gone for the Smooth Pack and the ladder, and dumped the raised air intake. My dealer said the software that fixes the speed warning is out now, so I need to have that done. I’ll need to do a windshield protection layer (but that’s the same for Rubicon or Bronco, so no points off). Don’t really mind the steering and I’m getting used to the lack of an instrument cluster. Interior storage - that’s my biggest nit, other than the speed warning. But I’m so much happier driving this than a new Defender. I know it’s expensive- but so is everything else. If you got a Land Cruiser First Edition, and did a lift kit for comparable clearance and wheels, you would pay the same, especially for the “dealer convenience fee” to be one of the lucky few. And a Bronco Raptor or Rubicon 392, other than being kind of clownish, would cost WAY more. This is mid-range compared to Defender, which has a price spread from $62-$115. I just want to add one edit - think twice if you are using this as your daily driver in a city with intense traffic (LA, Atlanta, Boston) - visibility is NOT good and no blind spot monitoring. I wouldn’t want to sign up for that.

The Fieldmaster is the posh trim level bundle w leather, carpet and alloy wheels, the Trialmaster is the off-roady trim level bundle, but you can get all of those features or match how you like just by starting with the base and picking things individually. Both trim level bundles cost the same ($79+). There’s not really a price advantage to taking the bundled trims. Hi, Tom I think your Dads moaning for UA-cam sake. The car is absolutely brilliant . I’ve just driven 300+ miles from my home in the midlands (UK) through are beautiful Peak District and on Uk to Richmond in the pennies and back .
The more you drive them the more you’ll love it . The steering lock issue , isn’t an issue , the steering on road issue, isn’t an issue . I owned and sold my G wagon for the grenadier and it’s a far better steering set up than the GW.
Seats are brilliant , and the cabin and view are perfect . The Speedo to just to my left (UK model) is a genius.i actually commented to my son earlier today that who would of thought that would work and be easier than looking down at a dashboard - brilliant 👍👏👏. Honestly the car feels so well built and it should do, Magna engineering and world class component partners . I see why they increased the vehicle price, it’s impossible to build the car for what is early adopters paid for our car .
I think next time Tommy should spec the car , he seems to understand the grenadier more.
I blown bc away how good mine performed this last 24 hours and didn’t want to get out of it . And wow 25.4 mpg (diesel) for where we went and what we did is far better than expected . My 2018 diesel G wagon never did more than 21 mpg . In summery and coming from a former G wagon owner I believe the grenadier is a far better built car for 70% of the money . And it’s a 5 year warranty . You guys seem to know Magna, try asking them if it’s the G wagon they designed for Merc to replace the W463!!!
I think we all agree the 2019 G wagon is not like its predecessor , but the grenadier is .
Well done Sir Jim for following your dream . Would love to see a 2 door smaller truck , like a Degender 90 size at sat £40000 starting price in the UK.

    • @aerynlovell4754
      @aerynlovell4754 Місяць тому +4

American 4x4 guys seem to have a hard time understanding the purpose of the snorkel. The first priority is as a clean air intake when driving in dusty conditions. When driving in dust, the air close to the ground has more dust particles that clog the air filter. The second priority of the snorkel is as a cold air intake. In a hot environment, the air close to the ground is warmer than the air at roof height. Then, the third priority of the snorkel is to keep water out of the engine when crossing a river. However, on the Grenadier, the snorkel (air intake) isn't waterproof because the diff breathers are mounted just above the water fording line. If the snorkel was waterproof, then someone would take it into deep water and get water in the differentials. For deep water crossing, you will need to lengthen the diff breathers and get a waterproof snorkel.

I was a little surprised at the things that you find undesirable on this vehicle. The steering is what I would expect of an offroader, there is no case to be made for strong self-centering. Having driven millions of miles in a semi, I have developed an appreciation for steering that you dial in and out ONLY as needed and wanted, and never have to fight to get what you want.
There was also comment about 'missing' features such as heated and powered seats. I know *I* would not want such things, as it is possible to wade a little too deep sometimes, and power connections under my butt are NOT what I wish to get wet! A heated steering wheel, on the other hand is seriously wanted!
The other kinds of 'features' mentioned here include 'blind-spot monitoring and so on - what I call the 'anti-safety equipment'. There is no reason to have a blind spot if you adjust your mirrors correctly (out further than you first think of) so no beeping or blinking distractions are required to handle it. In fact the only safety equipment that is needed and not present is the presence of a standard (manual) transmission. This would not only allow for greater control offroad, but also greater attention to the task at hand when onroad. From the little I have tried, Bronco does this best.
As for the things left off - the safari windows, the battery/switching etc package are oversights - but the biggest thing they didn't provide you with is the larger tires, and the portal axle option to enable them best! Perhaps a RockMaster edition? :)
Keep up the good work - and get used to the steering - it actually enhances the experience once you get used to it!

Agree with most of your points, but as far as the blind spot monitoring, I think for non-professional drivers it's nice, especially on long trips. Most people do not know how to set their mirrors correctly. And as far as the power seats, they showed in another video that the computers are under the rear seat, so the seat motors would be the least of my worries with water intrusion.

@@fritty9927 You aren't paying for the "missing tech". You are paying for all the things mass market car makers "value engineer" out of vehicles. You are paying for screws so that you can easily remove interior panels and install custom bits instead of interior panels that you have to buy a special tool to remove and may not reinstall after the 3rd time it is taken off. You are paying for a transfer case with a manual lever and open center diff in low range (great for maneuvering trailers in tight spaces on high traction surfaces). You are paying for Bilstien shocks, Eibach springs, Carraro axles, Recarro seats, ZF transmission, Tremec transfer case, BMW engine, a heavy duty ladder frame and Magna engineering. You are paying for front/rear lockers and the ability to mount a winch behind the stock bumper. You are paying for the upgraded electrical harness option engineering. You are paying for the ability to tow 7,700 pounds (I can't comprehend TFL's decision to skip the factory trailer hitch considering how much towing content they make). I don't know why TFL skipped the electric seats which cost about the same as the in-dash compass they did get.
I can understand someone that wants the tech. I can understand someone wanting everything the Grenadier has. If someone wants both they can go buy both by paying Mercedes G-wagon prices.
When you go buy a car/truck/suv from one of the established automakers you are paying for everything that the Grenadier is not. The Grenadier's tagline "Built on Purpose" is as much of a warning as it is a brag. It is a warning of "this may not be for you". If you are upset about the "missing tech" then the Grenadier is not for you. This isn't a dig at you because I can relate. The truck I want is a Toyota LC79 Landcruiser (diesel V8, solid axles w/ lockers front and rear, a manual transmission, 2,200 pound payload and tows 7,700 pounds), but they aren't sold where I live (US).

“No parts shared with Land Rover”. Except they both use the ZF gearbox and some range rovers have German engines 😂. Good videos.

I had all the same complaints after I bought it but after a week of driving the steering is a non issue and is just second nature.

I drive a Ram 3500, I bet I would find the Grenadiers steering to be brilliant.

The Grenadier motto is actually “Built on Purpose”, not “Built for Purpose”. However, I think TFL’s take is better because of course it was “Built on Purpose” -you don’t accidentally build a car.

It was clearly meant to be a play on words, “ Built On Purpose” as in “Purpose built” or built for a particular purpose in mind…

Some negatives are a little petty... except heated seats. Winter+heated seats=divine.

There is a software update that let's you turn off permanently. I would think as an owner you would have seen the notification.

It comes stock w Eibach springs. There is now also an Eibach lift kit - if you MUST have the extra clearance.
