      I have a question. What would you recommend when there are a lot of scratches in the spark plug hole itself. I removed some spark plugs of my motorcycle the other day and I was really careful. The scratches must have been already there. Would this affect how the engine runs or is it no problem at all? Thank you for your answer.

    So this is what my dad used when he said he installed a helicoil on my 92 Nissan D21 truck. It had blown a plug out as described. He passed in 09'. Sure miss my pops. Thanks for the explanation Scotty.

    There's a neat tool you might want to look into. It's called a threadsaver, it's a collapsible tap that you can easily run down into good threads when the top threads are chewed up. Once run down, put the expander rod in then turn the tap reverse,cleaning up the damaged threads. I've got two sizes of them from working on motorcycles, they've really saved an otherwise crummy job of helicoiling the plug holes.
    This job was of course about replacing threads, and try packing the tap with grease to catch most of the metal chips, preventing them from falling into the engine, although alloy chips won't do damage to be honest.

    I’m driving a 2013 Corolla with NGK Ruthenium HX plugs, a 14mm socket generally works to install them, but when changing them out I found the #1 seized in place so I searched your videos and this one showed me the way. However, the Helicoils I needed for my car & plugs were M12 x 1.25 which is a shade smaller than the ones you used in this video- posting this comment to remind other DIYers to check their sparkplug’s Specifications for thread diameter & thread pitch so they can get the correct Helicoils the first time. Thanks Scotty, the knowledge you share is a treasure.

    Take care of that Golden Voice Scotty ! A machinist friend told me to put some wheel bearing grease on a tap when doing this. It catches the majority of the cuttings. I tried it & it works. See ya Saturday!!!...

    • @garyallman3039
      @garyallman3039 8 років тому +1

      Yeah, I think the grease is standard operating procedure. I also have a small diameter wand for my vacuum cleaner that can get in there, and a cheap USB camera that I can see inside with. I would not have thought to crank it with no plug inserted -- great idea for final "clean."

    • @George-ie1si
      @George-ie1si 7 років тому +4

      Also you can stuff a greased rag down the spark plug hole and pull it out when the job is finished.

    • @stever5887
      @stever5887 6 років тому +2

      I've heard of the grease solution as well (actually, using cold grease). The problem with the grease is that it may actually trap tiny pieces of thread down inside. Another possibility is a balled-up piece of duct tape on a stick or a length of brass tubing. I like the solution of starting the engine, though, and blowing them out; I suspect that would remove virtually all of them in a few seconds.

    • @matthewstorm5188
      @matthewstorm5188 6 років тому +2

      Better than using grease is to pressurize the cylinder with a vacuum cleaner. Doing this will blow shavings out of the spark plug hole while avoiding any grease that can make metal shavings stick (rather than leave). Simply get a vacuum cleaner that can be set up to blow (many canister and shop vacs allow the hose to be connected to the air outlet). Connect the hose to the throttle body, and open the intake valve(s) on the cylinder you are working on. Make sure the exhaust valve(s) are closed so that you don’t lose pressure in that cylinder. AND MAKE SURE THAT THE INTAKE VALVE(S) ARE NOT SO FAR OPEN THAT THEY INTERFERE WITH THE TAP. After tapping the hole, disconnect the vacuum and crank the engine with the throttle to the floor to blow out any remaining shavings.

    Thanks, Scotty!
    I had a spark plug pop out of a 93 caprice classic with 96000 that I just bought. The plugs are all rusted so I shot brake clean at it and then put marvel mystery oil in a spray bottle and sprayed it then 3 hrs later did it again and let it soak for 24 hrs, it turned almost immediately with a square fluted extractor next was a thread chaser coated with MMO back and forth real slow to pick up the rust that got all through the threads, did it once and it was covered in debris! Did it again and it came out basically clean. Then put the spark plug in hand tight to check the threads, what really saved me was the advice of leaving the plug out and starting the car, I was scared it had rust down in the cylinder! I'm "tool poor" so don't have a magnet or air compressor to clean it , I didn't remove anything from the distributor,started it up and let it run 15 or 20 sec shut it off put the plug in and wire on then started up and it ran great!

    I always use nickel ant-seize on the plug threads and silicon paste on the wire boots seems to work well so far. I know it's a customer car and you can't control that. Thanks Scotty those heli-coil repair kits are used quite a bit on Rolls Royce jet engines, and throughout aviation, they are a life saver.

      +MrMetalBurrito They have extended reach spark plugs. The engine might be tough but the spark plugs are not. Stupid design by Ford. Those plugs like to break off in the head and its usually the back 2 which is hard to access and fix when it does break off in there.

    I re-threaded a blown-out spark plug in my Miata recently. I used a Time Sert. The kit is expensive but the inserts are cheap. Very easy to do. I put grease on the tap when I threaded it, then vacuumed out the combustion chamber with with a small adapter hose on my shop vac, and finally, like Scotty did, started the engine with the spark plug out to blow out any remaining metal chips.
