    I watched a plumber attempt to replace a fuel pump. Somehow he created an arc with the car's electrical system, just when he got the fuel lines disconnected and lit the gasoline on fire. From there it degraded to cartoon comical. He started pushing the truck away from the fire, but as he pushed the gas kept dribbling out of the fuel lines and followed the truck clear across a very large parking lot. Eventually he ran out of parking lot, and the truck was totally destroyed by fire. The fiberglass ladders were melted onto the ladder racks, and all his other tools also burned along with his truck. After seeing that, I disconnect the battery before I do ANYTHING, more involved than changing a tire.

    Rubber gloves are deffinitley better than going in bare handed, to protect against ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) damage, but if you're going to be touching bare circuit boards, and want to be safe, you should take the same precautions that you should take when working on computers, and actually try as hard as you can NOT to insulate yourself. Touch bare metal before starting work, and every time you walk away and come back to discharge any static electricity in your body, or get a grounding bracelet, that will discharge any static charge before it can fry circuits.

    Nice video as always. The battery part being disconnected has been discussed in prior videos. I didn't realize that static electricity would be present in our own bodies, enough to transmit a harmful charge to a cars computer. I learned something there. Gloves are always helpful. My pc repair guy says never use a vacuum cleaner on a tv or pc because of static electricity as well. The voltage demo was also helpful, as well as the wire one too.

  • @mercedesw124centrum
    @mercedesw124centrum 9 років тому +5

    dont matter which battery connector you remove??????? first thing a car mechanic learns is to take of first the negative connector. most of the cars are chassis grounded. when you have the negative connector on and you take of the positive connector and you hit the body with your spanner it ARCS. there for always take of the negetive connector first!!!! ( at body grounded cars).

    • @scottykilmer
      @scottykilmer  9 років тому +2

      you disconnect either battery cable, no power is sent to the car. So unless you're an idiot and then go shorting things out with spanners in the wrong place, it doesn't matter. I have no sympathy for idiots messing with things they shouldn't be.

    • @mercedesw124centrum
      @mercedesw124centrum 9 років тому +2

      Scotty Kilmer this has nothing to do with idots shorting things. . when you turn loosen the postive pole first and puttung the spanner on it and turn it arround it is very easy to touch a other metal part at the car. It is commonce to always unhook the battery by disconnecting the negative pole first.
      and since most of the people who watch your channel are not really pro carmechanics, i think you should point out such important things.

    Rubber gloves will not prevent ESD... in fact they will cause it. As others here have pointed out, rubber gloves are insulators; and insulators are dielectrics. They store potential static electricity. I believe rubber in particular stores a negative charge, so its just waiting for you to touch something that already has a positive charge. Your best bet would be a grounding strap. Even a bare wire wrapped around your wrist and then fixed a bolt running into the frame of the vehicle would be fairly sufficient.

    Check your main relay... It sends voltage to the fuel pump. Sometimes the solder joints dry out, and when they're hot they expand and the joints in the solder can crack. Sometimes they can be re-soldered; but it's best and easiest to just replace it.

    One thing I learned about fixing cars is fix what's wrong and don't fix anything else just because it's apart. For example one time I installed new piston rings and decided to install new rod bearings simply because I had it apart. I didn't measure the bearings and didn't know the crank had been turned. The new bearings were too thin and I ended up ruining the crank.

    0:54 Actually, tell people to remove the negative connection first. Sometimes removing the positive side first can lead to scary fireworks. Someone using a wrench may move their wrench toward a metal component and poof! There goes a chunk out of your wrench or, boom if the battery is putting off fumes or gasoline fumes from the engine compartment. Also, on many diesel engine vehicles, you'll have two batteries and, removing the positive lead first can cause a problem too if someone pushes the end of the battery clamp out of the way into an area of exposed metal...boom.

    Im an electronics systems engineer familiar with servicing solid state electronics .
    Static protective gloves are of a special construction , conductive fiber impregnated with grounding straps. You won't find them in an autoparts or drug store.
    That vinyl and rubber are good insulators makes them excellent static electric accumulators . A tiny bit of sweat is enough to bring the static potential charge if a 'rubber ' glove up to the same static potential as your body. Wearing conventional vinyl, urethabe, nitrile or rubber gloves increases risk of static being generated and duscharged.
    A car can acquire a much larger static charge than a person, simply by being insulated from ground by tires and driving down the road.
    Because static electricity can flow in either direction between objects depending on their relative charges, protecting car electronics against static discharges actually requires two steps to bring and maintain everything at the same static vltage level. IDEALLY THIS IS ZERO, EARTH POTENTIAL.. It need not be, or repairs to satelliites by orbiter astronauts would be impossible.
    Because a mechanic will make intermittent contact with things outside the vehicke as he works on one, he needs to take precautions which dont involve rubber gloves.
    First, a static grounding strap around a wrist or ankle, attached on the other end to one of the vehicles grounding lugs. Second, a ground wired from the same grounding lug to an earth ground.
    High humidity is no protection against static discharge, though it may speed charge bleedoff through the moist air.

      lol that explains why in my computer repair class back in high school the teacher would insist on how important those gloves were, but never give them to us when we opened up "junk" laptops and stuff....I thought it was safety precaution for the people and he just didn't care.

    • @psdaengr6155
      @psdaengr6155 8 років тому +3

      +xinic5 You've probably realized by now that few teachers view their primsry responsibility as that of preparing students to function effectively in the real world. What happens outside the classroom stays outside the classroom, except when panicking capacious adults decide it's in THEIR best interest to change the rules and keep students in their chikdish roles as kinderchattel.
      The concept of best practices isn't incorporated into the curiculum. Teachers aren't held to it, students don't learn it. You are taught no more than what the curriculum guide says, and more often than not, much, much less, as time is wasted observing politically correct fads, "holidays", revisionist history and other totally useless garbage that doesn't educate you, teach you to think, or prepare you to functionas an adult.
      Under some conditions, you can get away without wearing a ground strap. Those conditions are high humidity IKEA USAand/or a rock solid habit of holding onto a part of a computer chassis that is part of its internal ground system. The latter is what's called motor memory, acquired only with high repetition practice. A production line worker might learn it, a shop student doesn't have the opportunity in a class environment.
      In the case of portable electronics, it's harder, because the chassis is floating without a ground connection. Cars are relatively isolated from ground, and if driven a long distance in dry cold weather, you can get a strong visible discharge if you stand outside and touch part of the metal body. That's the reason gas stations have warning signs about filling gas cans outside of a vehicle.
      Best practices and the inability to have perfect recall or develop motor memory for every situation is why astronauts follow checkkists (and communication with cperts ehen possible for EVA operations, including grounding precautions during electronics system repairs. When your life depends on keeping their habitat working, and repairing breakdowns correctly the first time, they don't do "good enough" work.
      If you are working on a modern car with highly integrated electronics, your work has a direct effect on the safety of the operator. Even if that will be you, ESPECIALLY if that will be you, follow best practices and do the job right.

      Well the laptops were really old junk laptops that didn't work, so what I meant was that it didn't matter if they messed up even more, as they'd likely never be fixed. They were used just as examples of what a laptop looks like inside.
      The teacher actually was a pretty nice teacher who loved what he taught, but we was *too* nice. He allowed students to do whatever they wanted, and only choose to focus on those who showed interest in the class. He didn't seem capable of teaching an entire class. I was one of those students he focused on, but was always hesitant to ask for help to better understand stuff.
      I remember putting a remote control car together and getting stuck pretty early on and giving up. I also really wanted to learn how to solder stuff, but seem to only burn everything...lol

    • @psdaengr6155
      @psdaengr6155 8 років тому +3

      +xinic5 A person can act nicely without being good. A person can love a subject without truly mastering it , without loving teaching, without loving students.
      IMO, there are no "nice teachers". There are people who act nicely, and people who can teach. There are some people who act nicely, and are stupid, incompetent, ignorant, or evil. Similarly, there are no "nice students".
      Teachers are competent in a subject or not, competent at teaching students how to use their aptitudes to learn or not, and capable of presenting subject material in an interesting manner to a general audience or not.
      A good teacher must be a good learner. Mastering learning requires some intelligence, some aptitudes, some physical abilities, many learned skills, and a willingness to learn. A good teacher must master a comprehensive set of learning skills and be able to teach a set of them to each student that fits that students' abilities, aptitudes and intelligence.
      It's possible to be an excellent student, a master of a subject, and enthusiastic about that subject without being a good teacher. Being able to only teach to a small subset of students already enthusiastic about that subject is called "Preaching to the choir".
      A good teacher is an evangelist of his subject. If you are lucky, you will have a few good teachers during your first 12 gears in school, and if you are extremely lucky, you will find a "choir" that fits you.
      If not, you will need how to teach yourself how to learn, and develop a healthy level of skepticism about what you are being spoon-fed by edu-fakers.

    not really, don't buy another one if you don't like their styling, BUT, go to look at other new ones and if they aren't that way, the dealer is bullshitting you and they made that one wrong. Realize sentras are a bottom line car and they don't pay that much attention to detail making them.

    that's an old wive's tale. Doesn't matter which one you remove first, you are breaking the circuit either way. And when connecting them back on, you are reconnecting the circuit, again, it doesn't matter which way as the circuit itself flows the same direction either way.

    sure, I've seen guys fry out many modules on cars by handling the connectors with bare hands in the dry winter weather. realize they only use a 5 volt signal on many wires, you send static electricity down one that goes to the computer, Wham.

    Scotty, I love your videos but one point I have to disagree with is to disconnect the battery. Some vehicles such as my 2004 GMC Envoy have electronic throttle bodies and when you lose power to them the PCM forgets where to keep the TB at idle and can stall it out until it learns it again. Also if its a dirty TB it can act erratically so just pointing this out. Otherwise great video!

    Only if you are made of metal. You can lick the battery terminal with your tongue on one side and hold onto the other terminal and nothing will happen. Just don't try that with 112 volts

    Seafoam can be hard on the catalytic converter but maybe not. You can try hot water thru the brake bleeder air hose or throttle body, very very very slowly and carefully while the engine is hot. It'll steam clean the engine without using chemicals. But be very very very very careful

    Rubber gloves don't help with static, they are insulators so they can better accumulate charge. Instead ground yourself .. but this is not much of an issue with anything less than 10 years old because modern electronics are much less sensitive to stray static.
    One thing I would add to this video is, put towels on your front quarters and seats so you don't dirty them or scratch them while working.
    Also heat your fasteners if they don't loosen up right away

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  11 років тому

    There's a few possibilities... It's possible your car "noticed" the belt slipping, and turned on the CEL. Or water was slung onto something in the engine.... Just reset the computer by disconnecting the battery. Or take it to any auto parts store. Have them read the code, and reset the computer.

    that's not true. Once power is disconnected, nothing can flow, there's no power behind the electricity. Voltage powers it, with no cable on, either one, nothing can flow.

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  11 років тому

    yes, things sometimes will need resetting, BUT if you don't do this and ruin a thousand dollar computer because of power shorting out, that small resetting procedure will seem like nothing.

    You should always disconnect the battery ground first and hook it up last, in case your wrench touches anything metal on the car. The metal parts are the same polarity as the ground terminal.

    when that light comes on, it means the charging system is below the needed level. So, either you have a really bad battery, got a bad alternator, or the wiring going to the alternator is bad.

    yes, if you're working on nothing but computer circuits on a bench, static will build up. But working on a car, you're always touching metal on the car and build up would be minimal on the gloves

  • @scottykilmer

    starter solenoid won't work like that, cause starter gets super hot running the car from engine heat and would still act up, even in winter. I would assume bad computer circuit or module.

    As rubber gloves are insulators, they can be charged with static electricity, or in other words non flowing electricity. The difference with a conductor, is that conductors allow electricity to flow where as insulator only store static if you rub something like a cloth on them. A good example is rubbing a rubber balloon on your hair which will build up static electricity to the balloon and can transfer it to other conductors if touched. So its not necessarily a good idea to use rubber gloves.

    you would have to sand it down to bare metal and prime the metal with corrosion resisting coating. Then bondo over it and paint it
