  • Phillip Danner of Danner Builds drops by the lab to show us his secrets for making silicone molds used for casting epoxy resin. Using only a handful of tools you can make your own molds for casting epoxy resin and more. Basic molds can even be made with a scroll saw or etching with a rotary tool. Sharing of knowledge is one of the things that makes the maker community so great - thank you to Phillip and Elizabeth Danner for coming to Narwhal Labs and teaching us their skills and techniques.
    Special thanks to TotalBoat and Thunder laser for their support of Narwhal Labs and this project.

    Great work Phillip! So glad you were willing and able to share your process with me (and everyone watching this video)! I've since made several molds following both your simple and advanced techniques and they all came out awesome.

    How do you do 3D molds? What material? I have a cnc and can do 3D cuts.

    Hello my friend, I am interested in making silicone molds, and I have all the tools, but it is very difficult for me to make molds with small details, for example a 4 cm circle, and there is a phrase or a logo on it.

    Is there a certain setting for laser engraving?.

    • @NarwhalLabs
      @NarwhalLabs  3 роки тому +1

      Settings will vary between lasers - even sometimes lasers of the same model, and of course it varies between materials. Even some acrylic can vary between suppliers. On our 100W CO2 unit from thunder laser, we use 15% power at 400mm/s speed for engraving in this cast acrylic that we bought from mcmaster carr.

    "We are going to keep this accessible" ...immediately walks over to 10k$ laser

      Phillip uses a $300 K40 laser at home. And you could join a makerspace and have access to a laser! You could of course make mold masters with a scroll saw and a dremel. Get creative!

      @crashoverride93637 you know you could just hack into a laser cutter and get this done... you crashed 1507 systems causing a 7 point drop in the NYSE. Just don’t let Acidburn catch you.

    how to make molds at home - you need a $4,000 laser etcher.... stop video at 1:45

      Hi Sammamishwa. While we’re lucky enough to have a really cool laser cutter, you don’t need one to make molds. You can do the same the same thing with much less expensive lasers, use services like Ponoko to cut your designs pretty inexpensively or find a local makerspace that has one you can use.

      @@NarwhalLabs cool, why not make a video without the laser? so everyone can follow your steps to make a mold. I mean really to you want youtube viewers or not?

    • @PhillipDanner
      @PhillipDanner 3 роки тому

      I use a $300 laser myself. They happen to have a bigger machine. There are of course services like mentioned to get your designs cut out as well. The intent was to show the process of making the mold itself however I see your point on how adding more information about what all you can mold besides just acrylic could add more value to the video. I appreciate the feedback.

    "We will use as few tools as necessary" .....Then they start out with a laser cutter...like everybody owns one of those.
