  • Today in the lab, Graz and Andrew are out to lunch and decide that they want the McRib back…for good!
    They have the brilliant idea to cast a McRib in TotalBoat epoxy so they can enjoy all year long. Will they succeed? Will they fail? Watch the video and comment below on what the next food should be cast and preserved forever in epoxy!

    I was working at McDonald's when the Flintstone movie came out and the McRib was re-released. After making hundreds of them, I never had the stomach to try one.
    Sealed in resin seems like the best place for this sandwich travesty! HAHA

    As if the McRib wouldn't survive indefinitely on its own without the resin ;)

    Professional sandwich preservation techniques here. Did you know "See-through McRib Coffin" was the name of my 80s cover band?

    Haha! good one guys. You may never know what's really *in* the McRib, but at least you know for this one what's *around* it.

    Nicely done! 😃👍🏻👊🏻 .........Fitting that you referred to the acrylic box as a coffin...... Since the McRib more than likely contains human remains!

    I’ve never used an oven to cure resin. Was that just to cure it faster or did you have to do it bc of the kind of resin you used?

    got technical questions what's the difference between using vaccuum chamber versus pressure chamber. I know one has vacuum the other has a pressure, but as for curing the epoxy and getting the bubbles out what is better or why would you choose one over the other.
    thanks

    • @NarwhalLabs
      @NarwhalLabs  3 роки тому +3

      Hey! Pressure and vacuum are ultimately used for the same goal - minimizing air bubbles - but are done during different stages of the process and work using different principles.
      A pressure pot works by holding your project at pressure (typically 45-50psi) until it's fully cured. This compresses air bubbles to be microscopic and basically invisible. This is the same effect that would cause a diver to experience "the bends" if they surfaced too quickly.
      A vacuum pot "degasses" resin, silicone, urethane and other systems after you're done mixing, but before pouring by removing any air from the mixture. Once your resin (or other system) is sufficiently mixed, put it in the vacuum pot and pull a vacuum. Release the air a little bit at a time if it is about to bubble over. This is necessary for some systems like higher viscosity silicones, but is also a good preventative measure for pours where the entire project won't fit in a pressure pot (like a river table).
      In short, degassing in a vacuum pot is a preventative measure for bubbles. Casting in a pressure pot happens after the pour to minimize the appearance of bubbles that are already there.
      Neither is 100% effective or applicable for every project. Be sure to properly seal any wood or materials in your project before pouring to help minimize bubbles.
      I hope that helps!
