For any new player, remember to google mtga arena codes. There will be a code for 3 packs from every set. Netting you atleast 30 free packs. This is the single most benificial thing to do when you start your account. After redeeming the packs you can now craft mono blue in standard within a few days. This is a playable tier 2-3 meta deck that will allow you to play at a decent level from the get go. Total cost in bo1 - 4 rares. Have a magical time 👏
Thanks for bringing this up. Definitely really important for new players to collect all the free packs they can. I believe this list here is regularly updated with the new and old codes draftsim.com/mtg-arena-codes/
So from a meta standpoint t3 decks are anything that, statistically, underperforms in the current meta of played decks. A t3 deck will normally net a below 50% win rate. T2 decks are considered as decks that will net you a 50% win rate at the least. T1 decks are considered as a deck that is overpreforming. A deck that nets you a roughly 60% win rate would be t1. A decks tier placement is dependent on average win rates among users. The tiers can change depending on what decks make up the most popular builds in the meta. The most played, or popular, decks aren't always t1. A t1 deck could be a counter to the most popular played decks. It would become t1 by netting a massive WR over the popular decks. Sometimes t1 decks really are just the best though. Mono U is a good t2 deck but individual winrates are going to be dependant on the users skill as well as luck.
IMO, something else to touch on, for follow up video, which someone briefly describes below, is after you've built up your collection, will usually have a ton of common and uncommon wildcards. When you do, save them for the next set, use the common and uncommon wildcards on as many as you can before opening a single pack or participating in a single draft event, etc. Then, when you receive duplicates, they'll all go toward advancing your vault, essentially trading up your common and uncommon wilds for mythic and rare wilds (at a terrible rate, but hey, if not going to use them for anything anyway, better than just having a million common wilds sitting in bank for no reason, lol).
Good luck all new players! My recommendation would be to look up the set before drafts. In particular, look up the best removal spells. If you get to your 3rd pick and you see a really good removal spell, it's a sign that color might be open
One more thing to mention is the easiest way to get lots of packs when you're just starting out is to go online and look up all the codes for free packs that come out with every set. It's a lot of packs all together
Best advice I can give new players: have fun with the cards you have and slowly accrue staples. You can build some really fun decks that don't require a lot of rares.
Best advice i can give to new players: Run away, fast. Don't waste any money or half of your life trying to unlock a few mythics. Play with friends with proxies or in paper drafts. Or play LoR haha. Richer gameplay and way less investment needed.
@@EvilCherry3 ngl i use to think the same thing. Then i realized the algorithm fks up the most after i get my 15 victories of the day. Now i dont play at all after the 15 victories. Way better experience.
As Quick Draft ONE has come around again, I tried it today and went 7-2. I've never done so well before and it's thanks to your encouragement that I've gotten better (plus your tip to watch NicolaiBolas). I really have done well without spending money. Thanks!
Absolutely fantastic video! One thing that would be good to talk about, for beginners, is the Alchemy packs, and their differences... I took a break from MTG when Alchemy came out, and angrily accidentally purchased an Alchemy bundle instead of the legit bundle of packs when I started playing again. After contacting customer support, and trying to get them swapped to the real set, which they wouldn't, they did finally make the packs in the store much more noticeably different at least though...
Thanks man! I just started Arena a week ago. This will be helpful! I appreciate the summary you included at the end. Easy to get lost in all the info so it really helps.
One point that might be helpful to new players: The only way to really get value from your large quantities of uncommon and common wild cards is to convert them into cards of the current set that you enjoy drafting before you complete the set. In this way you can farm the draft chaff and at least gain some vault progress. Do you really need 100+ commons sitting around? Complete the playsets of ones you already have 2 or 3 of. There are tools to help you identify and even simplify crafting them all at once.
for the daily farming building 2 colored decks of each 10 combinations is very useful. you can do the daily in just one or two matches if you play the color daily quests with two colored golden decks. saves a lot of time
Great video! Posted it on my social media, I frankly believe this covers most of the unknowns people have while starting with magic, or coming back to this title as I am right now.
Thanks for the vid. As a fairly new (1 month) player to Arena, this literally answered all of my questions on how to maximize the freemium aspect of it, and start building effectively. Much appreciated. I actually grabbed the welcome bundle too; didn't notice that value, since I was not really digging much into the Store.
I would advise waiting until you have enough gold to buy a 10 packs at once because they can often provide extra rewards alongside giving you a cushion for when the next pack is about to come out.
I just started a week or so back. I haven't played any draft yet. I been playing jump in and it seems pretty well worth it. Pulled quite a few mithic and some rares I really wanted. Last run I got a steel seraph and a skystrike officer.
Thanks for another great video. Being new to MTGA, this helps a lot. I'll probably skip the Mastery Pass this season since there's only two weeks left or something. Probably not worth it. Anyways, thanks again, very helpful!
Love your content. It would be great to get an updated version of this video. I've just rejoined the community and it seems there are a lot of changes since this video a good example is quick draft and cost of such etc.... msny thanks, keep up the great work
Thanks for the comment. I try to make a general collection-building video per set to cover the basics and anything that's changed since last time, but UA-cam loves to recommend this older video for some reason!
Thoughts on Premier draft? Strikes me as a more high stakes version of a quick draft - if you hit the 3/4 win mark it’s a great way to grind, but less wins is a heavier loss while more is a better gain. Other note in general is that you get additional value from purchasing draft/limited because you can play for a few hours in addition to getting packs and cards which is nice.
For the purpose of building a card collection, Premier Draft is just double the entry fee for almost the same amount of cards, so it's not the most effective. But for decent limited players, the gem rewards are better and it's a little easier to go infinite if you're good enough. Higher risk and higher reward for people who are good at drafts.
IMO, if you're rare drafting, you'll get FAR more rares and mythics in Premier draft than quick draft. At least double, often more, especially if premier drafting late in the set release. I can usually pick up 10 rare/mythic per premier draft, often getting one even 5th or 6th pick. Many rares and mythics don't translate well to limited, and real people just pass them, where quick draft computer doesn't let them go that long.
@@thenumbernurturer4066 this is may true but then you wont win, i spend around 100$ and got around 94% and mythic rank in the last season thanks to quick draft draft
It’s worth installing a set tracker so you can see which commons and uncommons (and rares) you are missing if you draft a lot as often you have picks 12-14 where you can take junk to fill in gaps.
appreciate this! what I still don't get is why my daily tasks like the bottom of screen at 1:49 don't refresh 100%. I get like 1 more quest per 24 hours versus all three refreshing. I feel like it's a bug but maybe that is intended.
I'm a veteran in TT Magic, but kind new to the MTG Arena and current standard editions. Drafts are fun, but the ones who have more card knowledge have a huge advantage.
they just recently started adding in 4x cards for mastery pass. those are rares. and you get like 5 or 6 cards in 4x . so thats like another 30 rares . so yeah;. mastery pass is a must if you wanna keep up.
I'm just now seeing this video. According to Game School Dad the best use for your gold is to buy packs and you should save gems to buy the Mastery Pass. My question is what is the best use for your gems once you have the mastery pass already? Also buy packs?
@@ricardopinto6069 I use my gems on Premier Draft games because it gives much higher rewards than Quick Draft events. If you're new to drafting, then Quick Draft is the safer option, but if you start to get more than a 50% win rate in the events, it's probably worth switching to Premier Draft.
Do the daily quests reset as 3 challenges or doed only 1 reset itself? Also id like to know if i can do every single challenge, so that they reset every day with 3 quests if its like that in arena Ty, greets from germany, your video helped me a lot to learn the game
Hi, game old school dad. Could you please go over the basics of using the Mtga app to build a deck? To give you context: I've only been playing with the started decks and I've earned a good amount of cards already and I'd like to crete my own deck using the cards I've earned but I don't seem to be able to do it. Could you do a video or link a video that explains how to do this, please? Thank you in advance.
@@gameschooldadMTG No, I meant how to literally create a new deck and to be able to play with it. Like Step 1: tap on Decks. Step 2: tap on the "+" sign and so fort.
@@franciscogrijalva5964 This video shows how to do it - ua-cam.com/video/vh0SXVNepFY/v-deo.html, but I don't know if this is really answering your question. Let me know if you are having any other specific issues with making a deck in the app.
I'm returning magic after a complete rotation set and so very pauper in standard cards... I'm planning to begin my new collection with the next set (wilds of eldraine) and slowly completing the pasts ones (from dominaria, witch will last two years)
Super great breakdown! I really appreciate the work you put into this. I’ve been wanting to get back into MTG Arena, and this might be just what I need.
Any recommendation for at what point the "switch" happens on set collection to go from Quick Drafting to build out your collection on a given set to just buying packs? For example, on BRO I'm at 90% total with 378/404 Common complete playset, 78/80 Uncommon, 50/68 Rare, and 17/23 Mythic. I have done a fair bit of drafting on BRO and feel like I'm hitting that diminishing returns, but could probably do some and try to mythic/rare draft or draft for complete playsets and abandon hope on building a cohesive and winning deck. Anyways, just wondering in your opinion when you think it's wise to transition from putting gold towards Quick Drafts and start putting them into Packs. Thanks!
I think it's hard to give a definite answer of when the switch should happen. There's a big grey area where the draft starts to lose value slightly. I'd say if you have that much of the set completed already, then packs are probably the way to go. I'm just making a video on this topic in more detail that'll be out in the next day or two 👍
I switch at around 50-60% completion of all rares+mythics, so just take an average. If the disparity is big, like, you have 65% rares completed, but only 35% mythics, then I'd wait for mythic packs to come out towards the end of the set and buy those. At 60% rare+mythic collection completion I usually have about 100-150 unopened packs, depending on how well I did at drafts, so opening them at season end is likely enough to instacomplete the entire collection. Rule of thumb for me is, when you start regularly seeing 2+ duplicate rares/mythics per draft, its not worth it anymore. Also, if your winrate is below 55% play quickdraft, if its above go for premium. Oh, and don't forget, there's no shame in rare-drafting. Hope this helps, gl.
I personally changed from drafting as much as possible and changed it up because of the value of the gold packs. I heard about the dup protection so I crafted 4x of almost all of the commons and uncommons before purchasing any packs (I also crafted 4 Steel Seraph's). Then I purchased over 55 packs and opened them. I didn't see any dup protection happening. In the Bro packs I ended up opening 2 more Steel Seraph's and kept getting the same commons and uncommons that I already have. It was even comical with the commons I had 10 commons at 3x and somehow I didn't pack a single one. Then I opened my gold packs and the same thing happened their too. Did the dup protection stop on purchased packs for the Bro set or am I just crazy unlucky?
Any extra commons and uncommons go towards vault progress instead of swapping for different cards, so you might see the same ones coming up over and over again. Crafting all the commons and uncommons before opening packs will only guarantee you fill your vault faster. Because Steel Seraph is a rare, if you have already crafted 4 of them, you shouldn't see them at all when you open packs, it should automatically swap out for a different rare.
@@victorph5680 it happened twice with my Steel Seraph. I crafted them way before even purchasing the pack. After opening the 45 pack bundle I switched up the packs to Bro Mythic packs. I came across a video before showing someone opening packs of them and it wasn't only giving them a Mythic card (with commons and uncommons), it was giving lots of rares with the one Mythic. The last pack they opened gave them Gem's. How does that happen cause I would love to do that?
@@randyrobineau2699 Streamer got gems from pack instead of rare card? I will assume that he plays a lot and he already has all the rare cards of the BRO set. In this case, you get 20 gems for an extra rare or 40 gems for a mythic. But beginners do not need to buy extra packs just for the sake of a small number of gems. It is better to wait and spend resources on the packs of the new Phyrexia: All Will Be One set. I am sure that they will be given gold packs for them, as it happens when buying 10 packs of BRO. I'm sorry for my English, it's not my native. I don't really understand the situation with Seraph Angel - can't help with that. When buying packs, you couldn't get extra copies over 4 copies, but from other sources (draft, irc rewards for daily wins, weekly free events, battlepass mastery) - you can. In this case, only 20 gems.
If you aren't sure if you have a good enough deck to play ranked, then you could stick to playing some more Jump In events to get more cards added to your collection first. There are quite a few decent budget decks that work well enough in Standard Ranked. I posted a video for a starter deck of each colour that I made after just playing for one week on a new account that all worked pretty well at the lower ranks. I will have more videos about budget decks for ranked matches coming out soon, as I know this is something that's really useful to know.
@@joseparedes9358 you can craft mono blue in standard for 4 rares. You can youtube reid duke mono blue standard. It is not the best but it is a decent enough deck to get started for sure. Thats what i would do anyways.
That's interesting. I started on Arena in 2020, so I didn't know it was any more generous before. If it was that easy to get complete sets, then no wonder they had to change it, it makes it almost completely unnecessary to spend any money at all.
I could make a whole video on this because the answer can be a little complicated! It partially depends on how many Quick Draft games you win on average per event. If you win 3 or more on average, then Quick Drafts will stay more efficient until you start seeing rares in the draft that you already have 4 copies of. If you win fewer than 3 games per event on average then it's much closer, and I would probably just go with whichever method you enjoy more. It also depends on whether you're spending gold or gems on the draft, because most people would spend 5,000 gold, which could get you 9 rares if spent on packs.
question: I've been putting up some really good results with Mono U tempo grinding out standard events. Since 200 gems = 1000 gold, should I be paying for my events with gems, and then use my gold to buy packs? Also thank you for the video! I spent 100 bucks when I got back into arena last week, but I had been curious if I am wasting money, so this video clarified the financial play patterns to make lol
Thank you for the great video! Can I ask you one question? I'm trying to collect Bloomburrow, specifically; is there a way to heighten my chances of getting to pick one of the 10 partial Bloomburrow sets (Rabbits, Bats, Squirrels etc) in 'Jump In!'? More often than not I'm only offered partial decks from other sets, so that doesn't help me with my Bloomburrow collection all that much...
The best thing you can do is try to always pick something you haven't picked before. The event is designed to show you packs you haven't picked before, so if you've picked more older ones, it'll be much more likely to show you newer ones. If you eventually pick every available pack once, then when the next set comes out it'll just show you one of those each time so it gets much better.
Is Mastery Pass really the best option to spend gems on currently? I've played Arena about 3 years ago and I remember mastery pass being better back then, more generous. The same applies to "deals" in the store. Packs used to cost 500-600gold as for "daily deals". Overall the game seems to be a bit more stingy than in 2019-20! And even then people complained that it is more greedy than Hearthstone.
I'm not sure how it used to be years ago, but since I started playing Arena during Zendikar Rising, I'm pretty sure the mastery pass hasn't changed that much. Even if the value is a little less than in previous sets, it's still the best way to spend gems that I'm aware of!
It's a balancing act between including all the information and keeping the video relatively short, so I didn't include everything here... BUT... I did go into more detail in this other video I uploaded today ... ua-cam.com/video/upoGUzMw8pI/v-deo.html
best option is this. free 2 play all the way ; but only get the mastery pass. it will help you immensely to get wildcards and make your collection grow. plus if you save your gems ; after you buy like 3 mastery passes; you will have enough gems to get a 4th mastery pass ; pretty much for free. oh and get the anthology packs that come out as well. those help very much as well; since thats 20 cards ; which is like 80 wildcards worth of cards.
@@2bampro yeah both historic and explorer and standard. mind you; i started playing arena heavily in 2019. i always buy mastery pass. so its 3400 . you pay the 20 and you get 3400 gems. you buy the mastery pass and youll get like 1400 gems . so do that a few times and you now have enough gems to get a 4th mastery pass. but what happened was; that i already bought the 3rd mastery pass and was gonna save my gems for the phyrexian set ; but i saw anthology pack for 3400 so it was a no brainer to nab those. thats like 80 wildcards worth of cards. i always get the anthology packs if i can afford them. if not; no problem.
The Standard Event is a good way of converting gold into gems if you don't want to play draft games, but I would only do it if you have a top tier deck, because competition there is likely to be harder. But Draft games are better for building a collection at the same time as converting gold into gems, and you've got more chance of having a fair game if you have a small collection than you will in the Standard Events.
@@gameschooldadMTG what a great detailed answer ! ty for your dedication. a serie on how you would grind the next set could be awesome and pretty unique
I find that you should build up your gold reserves just for current set you're playing in, and when the next set arrives, you'll have a decent amount of wild cards able to craft and enough gold to buy up alot of packs, build up your treasure chest and replenish your wild cards. All in the effort to max out all the rares and mythics. And from thereI you're able to farm gems, usually 20 gems from a rare = 1000 gold per pack you're spending and at the same time you're building up your wild card crafting meter. All you need is just one near completed set to farm off of. And not every set is a winner and must have, so you'll replenishing your gems and crafting meter pretty fast towards a set that you're looking forward to and rinse and repeat. Worked great for Crimson Vow, skipped investing heavily in the next to, and, worked on Brothers War. I basically have two sets to farm off of.

Sets that you can't buy packs for are worth mentioning here. Sets such as Anthology and Mystical Archive are a great ways to spend your wildcard tokens for some REAL value. I love me some Mirari's Wake and Dark Ritual.
Thanks again for a great video! If i get to chose 2 different times the same Jump In half deck (for example the” Venom”) would i get another copy of those common n uncommon cards and rares? Or is just one time?
Premier Drafts will give you the same amount of drafted cards as a Quick Draft will, but will cost twice as much. They're not the best for building a collection, but they will give you higher gem rewards, so if you're better than the average draft player, a Premier Draft will give you good value in gems.
One point with Jump In that I hadn't realized before; the rewards for actually playing are peanuts. You can just buy the decks and resign immediately. Even though I've been playing for a couple years I should probably buy Jump In packs as long as I don't have 4x of most the rares in the packs. And spending a rare wildcard on something that exists in Jump In is a waste. And I shouldn't open any BRO packs before getting all those rares, because of duplicate protection. Any fault in my logic here? Does everyone go through the Jump In packs when a new set is released and no one told me?
Your logic sounds pretty reasonable to me. But because you only get to choose between 6 packets in the jump in event, and I think there are over 60 options currently out, I don't think it's necessarily easy to collect 4 copies of ALL of the rares/mythics. You might start a new jump in event and only be given the options that you've already collected, for example.
They have added I think 10 new half-deck options for each expansion that's been released. There are packets for Dominaria United and Brother's War, so they have been updated.
@@gameschooldadMTG Yeah, I have to see what I'm missing. I don't have anywhere near 4 x rares of the last few sets so I could start collecting from Jum In and see where I want to quit
But what to do if I'm not good at drafting? I played around 10 of the events, and only had 2 where I had more than 2 wins. And honestly, I don't quite enjoy the format. Where should I focus my resources?
There are two routes you can take. You could either focus on getting better at drafting (I used to hate it, and now I get around 60% win rate), or you could just focus your efforts on buying packs instead. The gold pack bonus makes it still pretty good for rare cards and the wildcards make it easier to build the decks that you personally enjoy.
If you're just starting your collection on a set, just raredrafting in quickdrafts is more worth it than buying packs imho. I've been getting 7+ new rares/mythics per draft on average in about 25 quickdrafts of BRO and 20 of ONE. You could literally go 0-3 every single time and it'd still be better than paying 10k for 10packs + 1gold pack.
@@pointyheadYT there are benefits both ways. Buying 5 packs gets you 9 rares/mythics on average, including 1-2 wildcards. You need to pick up every rare you see in the draft to make it worth the most for a collection, but even then it's not guaranteed to be better than just buying packs. If you ever have 4 copies of a rare and open it in a draft, then you'll start missing out. The wildcards you get from packs are more useful than any specific rare.
Jump In! seems to have reset at some point over the last few months. I just can't seem to regularly find new packs when a new set comes out. Even though I'm 100% positive I have at least x1 of every single pack except the 10 or so new ones, I'm still very often not finding anything. Please please please don't tell me I have to collect all of them again, ugh...
I don't think they've reset. I didn't have any trouble with getting the new MOM packs. If you wait until after rotation, they should retire most of the old packs and you won't have to worry about them anymore!
@@gameschooldadMTG Yeah, thats a great idea. Forgot rotation was so close. Probably better to wait 4 months, than waste gold on packs when I struggle finding new ones.
If you purchase a large bundle of packs (such as 90 packs), does it contribute to the gold packs? Or do you only progress the gold packs when you buy single packs?
You get gold pack progression whenever you buy packs, and it doesn't matter if you buy them as singles or in bulk. If you buy a big bundle of 90 packs of the most recent set, then you'll get 9 golden packs as well.
I stumbled upon "win" cards (Bloodletter of Alcazotz and Unstoppable Slasher). A player, much better than myself, conceded the game when he saw that trash. PTW for sure.
Thanks for mentioning that. It seems to be every 6 weeks on a rotating schedule alongside free gold and discounted draft tokens - here's a video that goes into more detail - ua-cam.com/video/1qmEPyevAUI/v-deo.html
It can still be worthwhile because most of the rewards from the Mastery Pass are from other Standard sets. I made a video specifically dealing with this here - ua-cam.com/video/m5U9d5rVGCo/v-deo.html
There is a new mastery pass for each set release, so when the Phyrexia set is released, the mastery pass will start again from level 0 and you would need to pay 3,400 gems again to unlock the bottom row of rewards.
@@gameschooldadMTG ok, thanks for replying. So, if I correctly understood your other videos, it would be the best tactic if I save the gold and gems, do my daily quests and wait till Phyrexia gets out and eventually pre purchase mastery pass?

You can get around 7.5 levels per week, so it depends on where you are at the moment. If you're right at the beginning, then it might be best to wait until the next set is released to get the full value of the mastery pass.
After watching this, still really not sure at all how to build a new deck…just use the methods in this video to get gold and just buy hundreds of packs until I get all the cards?
I haven't made a video that specifically talks about building decks, but it's definitely one on my list. The short version: You don't need to buy lots of packs to get all the cards you need, but once you've collected a good amount of cards from Jump-In events, Drafts and opening packs, then you should also have some wildcards that you can use to craft any extra cards you want in a deck. I wouldn't use too many rare wildcards early on if possible, but there are many good decks you can build that don't need many rares or mythics at all.
@@gameschooldadMTG theres not that option under my event tab. its blank and off to the left side only gives me the option to play 5 single color and the 10 duo color deck games.

I had only spent $5 on the cheap Welcome Bundle to start with, when this video was made. More recently I've spent just $15 per set to enable me to do more drafts and craft more decks, but only since Phyrexia.
What he fails to tell you is everyone plays the mono blue in the standard event. I have a green deck that wins 7 out of 10 games when I play non ranked. Tried the standard event went 0-3 against 3 different ppl playing the identical deck. If you want to try and get an "infinite loop" play meta decks only.
I can't cover everything in one video unfortunately! Either way I'm sure there's a mix of decks in the Standard Events, just as there is everywhere else, although it's probably a different mix. I would definitely recommend just playing the best decks possible in Standard Events, if you choose to do them.

If you haven't completed the whole new player experience yet, and you don't yet have access to Spark Rank, then you'll have to finish those formats to unlock playing against other people. Best way to build fast is lose a lot haha. Why face the big guys when all you have to do is give up and complete daily. I actually laugh at people now who think I am trying to win. Get gold Lose a lot if you can't end it quickly and move on. MTGA is a joke because there is no penalty for giving up and moving to the next game. Wish more people would follow this principle because when you are winning you are really winning and it is a waste of time for them to fight it. The only reason anyone plays at all is for gold and cards to do draft.
You can play to lose if you want, but that doesn't sound very fun. About 50% of the gold you can build up comes from actually winning games, so I think it's worth trying at least to win, even if it's with a budget deck to start with. It doesn't take too much to build one decently competitive deck, even for casual players.
Just never play the dying format ( standard ) again. Play brawl/hist brawl, have fun and only ever need 1 of each card lol. I've had 3 accounts going on mtga for years just to draft.
The RNG programming on this game is absolute garbage. It's a good thing you can't purchase this game on steam because the reviews would be overwhelmingly negative. So many matches are lost and won with nothing to do with the deck or player, just garbage programming. I smirk whenever I see people actually spending money into this pile of garbage.
I'd say there are lots of times you would prefer having a rare rather than a mythic. Many top tier decks require more rares than mythics too. The extra 30% cost would make a big difference to the amount of packs you'd be able to afford.
That's not been my experience. If you spend any money, all it really does is save you some time. Many people have shown that you can fully complete sets without spending anything. I've only ever bought the welcome bundles and I do ok. And your win rate isn't necessarily anything to do with how many cards you have. Even beginner players can make decent budget decks that have more than 50% win rate. I'd say for a game that you can play entirely for free if you want to, it's a pretty good deal 👍
The game basically floats you at just above 50%... unless you are entering Events. The events are the only actual random part of this game... so unless you have an actual good deck and fully grasp the meta you will get stomped by full time players
@@gameschooldad in the way matchmaking and card draw function. You can play total jank and still maintain about 50% wins. I'm not taking ranked games.. just normal play.
@@MaleusMaleficarum oh right, I see what you mean. The matchmaking does help even things out so people don't play too many unfair matches. It really helps new players get started by not playing against the pros.
I think that from now on they will put code in the new messaging center
A side not is when you open these you will be progressing your wildcards!
Even if you don’t play alchemy, open for that wildcard progress
@@l0lan00b3 60% is way too high. If anything consistently has 60 it will get banned
Then, when you receive duplicates, they'll all go toward advancing your vault, essentially trading up your common and uncommon wilds for mythic and rare wilds (at a terrible rate, but hey, if not going to use them for anything anyway, better than just having a million common wilds sitting in bank for no reason, lol).
best to use common and uncommon wildcards on older sets. you will almost always fill up all the commons and most uncommons by end of mastery period.

Great suggestion! I'll talk more about Alchemy and the differences in a future video.
Good tip for people who have too many wildcards and no other way to spend them. The vault progress is tiny, but it's better than nothing.
for the daily farming building 2 colored decks of each 10 combinations is very useful. you can do the daily in just one or two matches if you play the color daily quests with two colored golden decks. saves a lot of time

Second this notion. So glad I came across this video (and channel in general). Much appreciated quality content!

I only got 1 weekly + 1 daily to completewhy is that?

what I still don't get is why my daily tasks like the bottom of screen at 1:49 don't refresh 100%. I get like 1 more quest per 24 hours versus all three refreshing. I feel like it's a bug but maybe that is intended.
You get one additional quest per day. When a new main set is released, you'll get all 3 refilled 👍
I'm a veteran in TT Magic, but kind new to the MTG Arena and current standard editions. Drafts are fun, but the ones who have more card knowledge have a huge advantage.

I'm just now seeing this video. According to Game School Dad the best use for your gold is to buy packs and you should save gems to buy the Mastery Pass. My question is what is the best use for your gems once you have the mastery pass already? Also buy packs?
Because you get a gem discount on events, it's usually better to pay for draft events with any extra gems after buying the mastery pass 👍
Thank you so much for the quick reply!@@gameschooldadMTG What would you say is the best value/return event to use gems in?
@@ricardopinto6069 I use my gems on Premier Draft games because it gives much higher rewards than Quick Draft events. If you're new to drafting, then Quick Draft is the safer option, but if you start to get more than a 50% win rate in the events, it's probably worth switching to Premier Draft.

Dup protection only for rares and mythics. If you have 4 copies of rare, you will never get 5th copy of it from buying new packs

When is a good benchmark for when buying packs is more efficient than quick drafts?
I could make a whole video on this because the answer can be a little complicated! It partially depends on how many Quick Draft games you win on average per event. If you win 3 or more on average, then Quick Drafts will stay more efficient until you start seeing rares in the draft that you already have 4 copies of. If you win fewer than 3 games per event on average then it's much closer, and I would probably just go with whichever method you enjoy more. It also depends on whether you're spending gold or gems on the draft, because most people would spend 5,000 gold, which could get you 9 rares if spent on packs.
Good video and easy to understand
Glad you liked it
question: I've been putting up some really good results with Mono U tempo grinding out standard events. Since 200 gems = 1000 gold, should I be paying for my events with gems, and then use my gold to buy packs? Also thank you for the video! I spent 100 bucks when I got back into arena last week, but I had been curious if I am wasting money, so this video clarified the financial play patterns to make lol
I would spend gems on events, and keep the gold for packs, as long as you have the mastery pass paid for already.
@@gameschooldadMTG Thank you! That mastery pass does seem nuts if you plan on playing the set.

I think ratio gold to gems is wrong. 4:04. Premiere draft cost 10000 gold or 1500 gems that means 200 gems = 1350 gold (1gem cost 6,667 gold).
For paid events you get a discount if you pay in gems, but otherwise the default rate is 200 gems to 1000 gold.

What do you think of standard event, is it woth it?
The Standard Event is a good way of converting gold into gems if you don't want to play draft games, but I would only do it if you have a top tier deck, because competition there is likely to be harder. But Draft games are better for building a collection at the same time as converting gold into gems, and you've got more chance of having a fair game if you have a small collection than you will in the Standard Events.

What about "Premier Drafts", are they worth our gold and time?
My understanding is that "Jump In" has not been updated since 2020.
@@gameschooldadMTG this is good to know. I haven't touched JumpStart recently. I can not find any updated info on the WotC site
@@gameschooldadMTG Yeah, I have to see what I'm missing. I don't have anywhere near 4 x rares of the last few sets so I could start collecting from Jum In and see where I want to quit
To complete daily let say cast or attack with creatures has to be agains other ppl ya?
It can be in regular games against other people or direct challenges with friends. Bot matches don't count.

Thank you, that was helpful.
You're welcome!
great videos for begginers!
Glad you think so!
Probably better to wait 4 months, than waste gold on packs when I struggle finding new ones.
i had no idea the gold packs had the dupe protection on em
Yeah it's really good that they do.
@@gameschooldadMTG thank you

I just rip packs cause I suck at Draft outside a few sets.
when is the best time to open golden packs? As soon as you get one, one day before a new set is released, other ?
Realistically you'll get the most value out of golden packs after you've done as much drafting from the current standard sets as you want to do.
is it interestinng to still take mastery pass, when it's an alchemy set (like, for instance, lord of the ring at the moment ) ?
It can still be worthwhile because most of the rewards from the Mastery Pass are from other Standard sets. I made a video specifically dealing with this here - ua-cam.com/video/m5U9d5rVGCo/v-deo.html
If I unlock mastery pass during brother's war, will it count during Phyrexia, or would I have to unlock it again during next phase?
There is a new mastery pass for each set release, so when the Phyrexia set is released, the mastery pass will start again from level 0 and you would need to pay 3,400 gems again to unlock the bottom row of rewards.
@@gameschooldadMTG ok, thanks for replying. So, if I correctly understood your other videos, it would be the best tactic if I save the gold and gems, do my daily quests and wait till Phyrexia gets out and eventually pre purchase mastery pass?
@@transmeeter That's what I would recommend. If you wanted to spend money on the game, then the $15 pre-order Pass Bundle is great value, or just save up enough gems to pay for it sometime after it's released :)

Getting 15 wins brings 6 ICR per day. Over a season it's 540 cards; That's 67 packs.
Yeah, that is a lot of cards, but any surplus rares are not duplicate protected, and getting 15 wins per day would take hours of grinding per day. It might be fine for some players, but I don't think many people would have that much time to put into the game unfortunately.

i just started playing a day ago but so far i've only won one of my starter deck duels. I guess i have bad luck because aside from my starting hand I can't seem to pull lands or creatures while my opponents stack enchantments. Am i doing something wrong??

@@gameschooldadMTG I changed my deck a bit and now I have a few different ways to draw cards. And when i draw I send to graveyard then put those to the field. So far so good.
How long does it take to complete a mastery pass ? Will i not complete it this late in the season?
You can get around 7.5 levels per week, so it depends on where you are at the moment. If you're right at the beginning, then it might be best to wait until the next set is released to get the full value of the mastery pass.
Did you play Castlevania?
I have played Castlevania many years ago, but not recently at all!
Ty
mastery pass is best bought when close to the end. if you buy early; you will get lazy and miss out on completing the whole thing.
That can work better for some people. I prefer buying it at the start so I can get the rewards unlocked earlier.
Eh, no. Exp is capped so there is a very high chance you won't be able to finish the entire track if you start late.
I wouldn't use too many rare wildcards early on if possible, but there are many good decks you can build that don't need many rares or mythics at all.
why wont mtg let me play jump in tokens and boosters, all i see is i can play 5 single color decks or the 10 dual color decks.
The Jump In event is under the events tab. There you can use the tokens to enter the event, or pay 1000 gold instead.
@@gameschooldadMTG theres not that option under my event tab. its blank and off to the left side only gives me the option to play 5 single color and the 10 duo color deck games.
@@johnnyharper2223 I see, it must be that you haven't yet completed the whole colour challenge or some other new player experience requirement to unlock the jump in events.
By the way - you've missed an Alchemy Pack deal on your economy guide - 15k gold for 20 packs, an easy way to get golden pack progress + boosts wildecard wheel, kindly add info in next videos :)
Thanks for the suggestion. I haven't mentioned Alchemy yet because that's coming up in another video soon. The Alchemy pack is a good way to get golden pack and wildcard progress, but it's only worth it if you play enough Alchemy, otherwise the rare Alchemy cards in the pack are wasted.

This that you have accomplished was without spending money?
I had only spent $5 on the cheap Welcome Bundle to start with, when this video was made. More recently I've spent just $15 per set to enable me to do more drafts and craft more decks, but only since Phyrexia.

What he fails to tell you is everyone plays the mono blue in the standard event. I have a green deck that wins 7 out of 10 games when I play non ranked.
Any evidence to back up that opinion? I'm curious because I hear this sometimes and usually it isn't based on much.
@@gameschooldadMTG do your own research. I wouldn't though because then you'd hate the lazy devs.
@@michaelwolejszo6445 any suggestions on where to do this 'research' that I've missed up to now?
one more thing. NEVER BUY THE REGULAR PACKS. always buy the mytic one. its more expensive. i know! but you always get a mythic.
I'd say there are lots of times you would prefer having a rare rather than a mythic. Many top tier decks require more rares than mythics too. The extra 30% cost would make a big difference to the amount of packs you'd be able to afford.
Rares are generally better than mythics. Always buy the regular packs unless you already have most of the rares in a set.
If you do not buy things in mtg, many things a lot, you will lose 2/3 games. This is the most fraud site in gaming history.
@@MaleusMaleficarum that's interesting. In what way do you think the game floats you at just above 50%?
