  • More than a million public sector workers could soon be asked if they want to go on strike over pay.
Numerous ballots have already begun, prompting questions about whether a winter of industrial action is on the horizon.
In this special report, Sky's Nick Martin meets a nurse, a teacher and a firefighter to hear their cases on why they should get an increase in pay.

"We need to see what's affordable for the tax payer." - Just start by getting back the 37 billion wasted on a test and trace app that never worked, so the contract was not fulfilled and the money should come back, exactly like the billions wasted on PPE that either never arrived or wasn't fit for purpose when it finally arrived.

I love when government top officials are trying to persuade us they can't afford to help out as it their opinion it would just cost too much money. When it comes to wasting billions of pounds on something government believed it was the good but it turns out completely useless. when they were transferring huge amounts of money in form of business contracts to their peers it was alright. They pretended it never happened and when they were pushed hard enough they hid behind lame excuses. I think this is the time people need to get very vocal about it and if needs take to the streets. Enough is enough.

Test & trace! Where they paid £6K per day to each of an army of 'consultants' who did absolutely nothing. Yes! Get that money back!
Plus scrap HS2 (£100Billion) as it's only the rich who will be able to pay those crazy fares.
Then the deficit will look much better & then more help for the poorest is feasible.

"Rich" people don't just keep their money in the bank. Elon Musk "worth" 200 billion, simply in shares of Tesla. Tesla employs 100,000 people. He can't even sell it all if he wanted to , as that would drive the share price lower, and he would end up with 50-60 billions at most. then he would need to pay taxes on it, and he is really left with "only" 20 billion. So yes, its better for everyone for him to keep that money in business.

The Government needs to take back ownership of strategic energy assets. It needs to accept that the Free Market has failed the energy sector, that it is in the national interest to renationalise our energy assets. The Government must therefore renationalise all the UK energy assets.

They've rigged all neoliberal economies, democracies, governments and media in their favour and are slowly sucking the wealth from our nations and putting it into their off shore havens.
The free market no longer exists because of neoliberalism, corporations and Wall-Street dont play by the same ruled the rest of us have to abide by. Remember 2008? WALL-STREET got bailed out via our tax money and regular people were left to fail and lose their homes. This is why the mega corps are monopolising the market, because they enjoy corporate socialism, whilst the rest of us have to suffer through late stage capitalism. When they fail they get help. Thsts not free market capitalism
It is our oligarchs who sold off these industries to China, dont blame China for Western corruption. China just did what any other country in that position would do. If this continues into next year, a similar arrangement might be required. To me this makes sense as companies and taxpayer are not on the hook for massive pay increases that they will have to bring forward permanently but keeps people from falling into real term poverty.
The government needs to address all of causes of inflation and recent reports suggest 65% of it is from corporate price increases and massive profits. Companies are taking advantage of the inflation and increasing their prices well above inflation for massive profits. Instead of expect the general populace to take it on the chin yet again, what are they do to reign in this massive price gouging by companies?

Kate has a great idea with the shakes as a substitute I'm using a mobility scooter. Can't leave home for shops in bad weather sometimes over two weeks at a time. Now trying to cook and freeze foods to keep me going these times as well as my shopping has doubled in price. I would love to know what shakes and how to make them that Kate uses that I can make from time to time especially when food is low at home and can't make shops due to bad weather. Kate should be getting a better pay because not only as a nurse but nurses duties have also doubled in tasks expected of them. I was not for nurses looking for pay rises before but in the last number of years nurses have to play more intensive roles with more and more work load thrown upon them and less staff to assist they are very deserving of a pay rise and they should be recognised and commended for the challenging role they play. Firefighters and other emergency services are a necessity and deserving of their recognition and should also get a pay rise. The gov should put a price cap on shops, fuel and energy suppliers in their unnecessary price rises and extortion from customers. Price hikes are necessary but not to the point of extortion. Just look at how much these people make over and above the costs these energy and shops should be taking some of the hits as well as customers

It's quite simple really - when the price of everything goes up, for whatever reason, it creates inflation in the economy - 'employees' would need a corresponding wage increase, if they are to avoid a drop in their living standard. To counter the cost of any increase in pay for their employees, employers / businesses would then raise prices still further, this is termed the wage-price inflation spiral. To curb this spiral, either employers / businesses would need to absorb the costs of the wage increase, without passing it on to their customers in higher prices (accept a reduced profit margin) or 'employees', many who have in recent years suffered pay cuts or very marginal pay-rises, would need to absorb a further reduction in the purchasing power of their wages (accept a reduced standard of living) The underlying question is: which of these groups can least afford to absorb this reduction in remuneration? Regretfully, it all simply boils down to the 'dreaded' rich / poor or the stupid 'envy' argument - i.e. which of these groups, In the present circumstances and in a fair, just and humanitarian society, can least afford to endure a further cut in their living standards. The wealthier employers / business owners, or the somewhat poorer 'employees' workers?

I agree with those that say there are just some who just don’t exercise sensible financial management and then complain about it! We all want more money and prices are obviously rising out of control but we do also have to take responsibility ourselves of what we earn and making sure that some is set aside for rainy days like these rather than living beyond our means in the good times and then expecting to be able to do the same in the bad times.
