UK inflation hits 45-year high - as cost of living soars

- The cost of basic food items from eggs to milk and cheese is soaring and, on top of rapidly rising energy bills, it's sent the UK's annual inflation rate above 11% - to its highest level for 41 years.
According to the Office of National Statistics, households are paying 90% more for domestic fuels like gas and electricity than they were a year ago.
While food price inflation has shot up to a forty five year high.
The Chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, blamed high inflation on the war in Ukraine and the aftermath of the pandemic. He said his Autumn Statement would help to drive down inflation by what he called "tough but necessary" decisions on tax and spending.
And, with tax hikes and spending cuts due to be announced by the Chancellor tomorrow - there are signs of growing unease among some Tory MPs.
Inflation is far more harmful to individuals than a collapsing stock or property market because it directly affects people's cost of living, which they immediately feel. It is not surprising that the current market sentiment is extremely pessimistic. In today's economy, assistance is critical if we are to survive.

Disingenuous to simply say Scandinavian countries have higher taxes and successful economies - they have incredible solidarity and social support systems including heavily subsidised childcare, which is available to all.
UK taxes are very high and for VERY little in return. Not even child allowance on an ordinary income.
Then one pays council and water taxes from NET income, not gross.

Those in control are doing this to the people they are suppose to serve. The poor. the children. the elderly ..families...we are all on firing line....because someone else says so.
Important point that the inflation figures is a rate of change. Just because inflation goes to 2% doesn’t mean things are cheaper - it means they’ve stopped getting so much more expensive. They’ll still be high even when we’re being told inflation is “back under control”.

For inflation to go to 2% the rate has to be higher than the inflation that takes the money away from circulation which means there be goods but no money to buy them, so normally the prices have to go down, what makes this inflation different is the price of energy because all goods are connected to the energy market and the higher dollar exchange,

I never knew anyone who claimed unemployment benefits in the UK before. Today my flatmate did. She told me she has to apply to two different schemes (Jobseekers allowance and Universal credits). The maximum support she can expect is rent (not bills, just the basic rent) plus GBP 333. Yes, you read that correctly. For all her expenses over an entire month INCLUDING council tax, heating, electricity and water bills, food, public transport, etc she is expected to make do with 333 quid! She was in pieces. I couldn't believe it when she told me. Her former salary is not even taken into consideration. I'm from Germany and we simply get 80% of our prior income, when going through a phase of unemployment. The benefits scheme here is ludicrous. I have never been so appalled, after hearing about this. I know she has had a very stressful time over the past few years and just needs a break of a few months. She has had a well-paying job. Now she won't be able to live of the benefits even for a month, so she's thinking about going back to the EU after being and working here for many years. I'd do the same. The way the UK cares about it's population is horrendous. I can't imagine what it would be like for anyone to live off that little. It's impossible. [333 minus 100 for bills leaves you with 233 quid for a month. That's 58.25 quid a week. What a joke!]
....That's not even touching on the issues of rent being so high no one can afford living in London anymore, the 10-month waiting lists on the NHS for seeing anyone else than your GP, the reduction in youth services, the homelessness crisis, the list is endless... There's no money being invested anywhere. It's all about tax breaks for the rich. The population is at it's worse point in years. And I don't think any of the Conservative MPs understand that.
The energy Gas and Electric will be around £300 on average from April so essentially she will have no money for food.

I live in Norway and we are a country that is struggling with inflation because of the price of energy products. A reality check: the inflation the UK is suffering is a result of brexit. Inflation here is higher but not apocalyptic. You would expect it to be crippling if you only listened to UK politicians saying Ukraine and coronavirus. It's a lie, it's overwhelmingly the cost of leaving the single market. The UK should join the EEA. It could get a deal that would still allow the UK to have some cake and eat it too as it is such a huge market. Hope it becomes politically viable 🙏

To be honest, Denmark and Norway are in a special situation because they export a lot of energy. And since the prices are up, they make a lot more money of it. That doesn't mean that the ordinary person profits of it. After all the cost for energy in these countries will go up as well. However the state has a lot more leeway for subsidies etc.
I don't agree, inflation is 12% here in the Netherlands. Which is still in the EU.
Honestly, it is getting out of hand and problem is our politicians pretend like they don't see it until its time to vote. I for one has been hit very hard and at this point, I am more interested in a solution as I know for sure an end is not near. What is the way forward for the less fortunate ones like me? How do we survive this phase? I am slowly losing my mind.
Practical steps: Vote wisely, Spend only on necessities, Pay attention to your health, Understand that cash only loses value with time and invest it, spreading your assets (locally and internationally) and while at it, always make correct inquiries so you don't throw your money in the wind or better still, get the services of an expert (that way, you give little room for error). Made my first million earlier this year this way and I think can comfortably wait out this "phase".. Good luck!

You’ve shot yourself in the foot, do you go to the hospital or do you carry on as if nothing has happened and say ‘get over it’ as if it’ll Improve the situation.
As an elder millennial, one of the few advantages is having lived through the Great Recession. My advice. Reduce unnecessary expenses, increase your savings by investing in financial markets and do not sell. One thing I know for sure is that diversifying your income can help insulate you from much of the craziness going on in the world.

It's true... It just takes a good mindset and nerves of steel. I was deeply invested in 2017/2018 in a well-diversified portfolio of stocks and digital assets that grew 4x with capitalization, venturing is not necessarily just about funds but also to be well informed. It's a long term plan for me so I invest and reinvest

There are lots of mixed opinions about stocks and there projection in the next coming years, I aim for short term solid gains from market correction and I'd definitely jump on the boat if I knew a thing or two about day-trading, but then again what do I really know? I'm just looking for the right moves to grow and hedge my stagnant reserve of $370k from inflation.

I have a great IDEA: instead of loaning money from others, why not the most rich of our society, that 1% rich, pich in and actually save the country and everyone would be so proud to be British again.
