This is what I love about Newfoundland. If you're a tourist coming to look at the smaller communities away from town (and even in town!) there will always be a local who will love to take you around to show you what the real daily life and history is in that place. That Newfoundland hospitality is hard to match!
When I got to the base in Argentia, it was Thanks Giving week 1964. There was no one in the base office to get me checked in. So I had to go out to town to eat. The first time I went to get a haircut on the base there were two Newfoundland barbers working there. Thats where I learned that in Newfoundland there was no coma's, periods, or breaks in a sentence. They were just all run together. It took me about 6 months to start to understand. When I left two years later, after living out in town (Jersy Side) you could not tell me apart from the native's. When I got back to Philadelphia they thought I had come from Ireland. Enjoying all your Newfoundland and Labrador videos. Watched your Arcosanti video this weekend, not surprised I knew the Pizza Girl!
I feel so broken, I just wanna go home 🎶 My dad used to sing that on the guitar all the time lol he raised me in Ontario but eventually he got to move back and I ended up coming out a few years later too! I've always been drawn to this island and it's been a great healing experience living here 💚

Fantastic video. My wife and I were on Fogo Island in late September 2021, so just before you. We also met up withAl Dwyer and his wife near their home in Tilting. I also encourage everyone who visits Newfoundland to take a side trip to Fogo Island and enjoy a beautiful land and its people.
There seems to be a lot better ferry service now than when I taught at the Fogo Island Central High School back in 1976-1977! Back then, the ferry was the Fleur-de-Lys, a summer ferry from Quebec, renamed the Hamilton Sound (and called by the teachers the "Hamilton Unsound"! It made 2 crossings a day so, if you wanted to go to Carmanville where the ferry docked then and drive into Gander, you had to spend the night in Gander or elsewhere because you couldn't go and come in one day. I also learned from a neighbour who had spent time in the area that the captain of the Hamilton Sound was an alcholoic! Oh, yeah! Fogo Island was quite the place back in 1976-1977! It's unfortunate that these two lads didn't spend some time talking to the locals. Tilting is very Irish, I guess, but so are other areas in Newfoundland and Labrador! The ST John's area has a population of 50% descended from the Irish who came from the Waterford/Wexford area of Ireland.

Thanks for this well made video! I’ve been to the Rock numerous times, and never even heard of Fogo island. I’m going to have to ask my Aunts about getting there. How long is the ferry to the island? Another question for you both was there any issues about bringing your beautiful dog to Newfoundland? I remember as a child in the seventies that pets had to go through a quarantine before traveling to Newfoundland. I’m so glad that I now most likely can take my dog Buddy!
You're welcome! Fogo Island is indeed a hidden gem in Newfoundland. The ferry ride to Fogo Island varies depending on which ferry route you take. The ferry from Farewell to Fogo Island (Change Islands route) takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Regarding traveling with pets to Newfoundland, the regulations might vary depending on where you're traveling from and the specific rules of airlines or ferry companies. However, it's generally easier to travel with pets nowadays, and many places have become more accommodating to pet travel. If you ever come back to NL I recommend going along the south coast, from Port Aux Basques to Bay L'argent. The most rugged beautiful coastline on earth!
I made the trip back in June, 1977 from Argentia to Port Aux Basques! $54 each and we had a cabin on deck. Heavily subsidized by the federal government no doubt! These guys couldn't take their Mercedes camper with them though. (I think there's a road down to Burgeo now, right? So you can't go along the south coast by coastal boat any more. It's is beautiful! And the coastal boat made a brief stop at St Pierre. I had a great time running through the streets of St Pierre. No visa! We had a great time!
I currently live in Nova Scotia but I was born and raised in Newfoundland. My paternal grandparents were from Tilting Harbour. My mom and my maternal grandparents parents were from Joe Batts Arm. Joe Batts Arm is just a stones throw from Tilting, 10 minutes or less. I visited Fogo Island, just once, in 1999. With me, were my cousin my dad and my uncle. I loved your video but I have to admit that I was very disappointed. You guys stayed there overnight and did not visit Joe Batts Arm. You didn't visit the town of Fogo either. This Island is too isolated for such a missed opportunity.

There are some Roman Catholics in Joe Batt's Arm and Fogo, but most are Protestants. I don't even know if the Roman Catholics of Fogo and Joe Batt's Arm were from Ireland. They could be descended from English Roman Catholics.

Great video as usual. I have some distant cousins in Newfoundland on both sides of my parents family.. Also fun fact my mom lived in Cornerbrook Newfoundland for short time before she met my dad. But most of my mom's maternal side of the family were from New Carlisle Quebec. And my mom's paternal side of the family were from the Netherlands. I could keep going about my ancestry so I'll stop now lol.

I used to have to get those ferries everyday off of bell island to get to work. Beaumont hamel and the Flanders 😁 it’s a cool experience but the lines are a piss off after a while.
I just found out via a DNA test that my great great grandfather was from Fogo. (We always were told he was a man from elsewhere in Nfld) so this is so incredibly interesting to me.

There are also United Church people and Pentecostal people there. I would hope that nowadays, there are even non-church-going people there. When I was there as a teacher in 1976-1977: grade 11 French, grade 9 Canadian history, 2/3 time school librarian/instructional media specialist, the Terra Nova Integrated School Board (Protestant) picked up the tab for 1/3 of the high school budget and the Roman Catholic school board picked up the tab of the high school budget so I presume that was the spread in the population : 2/3 Protestant tradition and 1/3 Roman Catholic tradition. A good many of the teachers at the high school, however, even if employed by the Integrated board were Roman Catholic. I was from the Lutheran and Anglican tradition (mother was Lutheran & Father was Anglican!), but was employed by the Roman Catholic school board. Religious "denominational" schools ended about 25 years ago and now, there is only one English language public school board and one French language public school board for the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Most of the Northeast coast of NL is of Protestant descent. I remember back in 1970 when I was being interviewed by phone for a teaching job, the voice on the other end of the phone said to me, "How do you feel about teaching in a Protestant outport, Hatchet Cove, Trinity Bay, NL. I replied surprised because here in Ontario back in 1970 even that question would never be asked, "But I'm Anglican!' I got the job.

It is unfortunate you did not get to visit the Fogo Island Inn. The guided tours are very instructive. The modern white house in the vidéo is made for out of province artists in residency. There are several of these houses on the island.
Actually the accent is a mixture of Waterford , Kilkenny (more so south kilkenny) , Wexford and maybe a bit of Carlow . Most of the settlers came from the south east of Ireland . Sometimes people mix up the Waterford and Dublin accents

There are many islands here, take your pick, Fogo is just one of many "Irish" islands , towns, inlets, harbours.. it's everywhere. Fogo is actually pretty boring compared to the rest of the island. We were exploring Tilting on Fogo Island, not the town of Fogo. If you are referring to Newfoundland, Fogo Island is definitely the most Irish of all, they even speak with Irish accent instead of Newfoundland accent. Watch till the end to see what we meant.
@@theRTWguys I get what you’re saying, but you’re actually incorrect on that. The Cape Shore is well known to be the “most Irish” place in Newfoundland. It consisted solely of Irish people and now their descendants. They also speak in Irish accents and it’s the place where all of the folklorists and historians from Ireland go to to study the “Newfoundland Irish.”
@@caitlinhickey6 Tilting is definitely distinctly Irish though. I did know one girl from Tilting whose family name was Cluett. There's a book of letters published about the the First World War written by a teacher from Belleorum who was neither Irish nor Roman Catholic. Her family name was Cluett as well. Someone in England with the last name Cluett confirmed to me that Cluett was an English and Anglican family. So much for Tilting being the most Irish place in Newfoundland. It's probably the most Irish place on Fogo though.
Not a single tree in sight on that island - yuck ! It's 'beautiful' in a sort of stark way, feels horribly open to the sea to me. Not somewhere I plan to go !

We were exploring Tilting on Fogo Island, not the town of Fogo. If you are referring to Newfoundland, Fogo Island is definitely the most Irish of all, they even speak with Irish accent instead of Newfoundland accent. Watch till the end to see what we meant.
There is a place called "The Irish Loop" in NL that I would have to argue would be a little more Irish.
@@theRTWguys I get what you’re saying, but you’re actually incorrect on that. The Cape Shore is well known to be the “most Irish” place in Newfoundland. It consisted solely of Irish people and now their descendants. They also speak in Irish accents and it’s the place where all of the folklorists and historians from Ireland go to to study the “Newfoundland Irish.”
@@caitlinhickey6 Tilting is definitely distinctly Irish though. I did know one girl from Tilting whose family name was Cluett. There's a book of letters published about the the First World War written by a teacher from Belleorum who was neither Irish nor Roman Catholic. Her family name was Cluett as well. Someone in England with the last name Cluett confirmed to me that Cluett was an English and Anglican family. So much for Tilting being the most Irish place in Newfoundland. It's probably the most Irish place on Fogo though.

Not a single tree in sight on that island - yuck ! It's 'beautiful' in a sort of stark way, feels horribly open to the sea to me. Not somewhere I plan to go !
